10 man Glens suffered a second successive defeat after losing out by the odd goal in 5, in a game full of chances at Cambuslang. The visitors opened the scoring in 2 minutes with a beautifully crafted goal. Captain Craig Menzies intercepted a pass on the half way line to drive forward before slipping the ball to Conor Lynass on the right who quickly delivered a diagonal pass to Joe Andrew on the outskirts of the box who rolled the ball back to Cameron Marlow who in turn released Dale Moore down the left to fire a cross into the six yard for the incoming Chris Dallas (right)to guide the ball into the net.

The home side were all square two minutes later after a free kick floated into the box  was headed on by former Hurlford striker John Gemmell for Scott Faulds to poke home from close range. Cambuslang took the lead after good work down the right by former Cumnock player Callum McRobbie before his cross to the back post eventually fell for  Gemmell to net easily. A deflected shot crashed off the post as Glens went in search of an equaliser before being dealt blow after Alan Cairns earned a straight card for denying Rangers a goal scoring opportunity just before the break.

Glenafton Athletic squad (14)Chances came and went for both sides in the second half before a cross from the left found Gemmell in the far side of the six yard box and his powerful header exploded off the ground and over keeper Brian McGarrity. Glens pulled one back after Conor Lynass (left) gathered a through ball from Findlay Frye at the edge off the box before playing a one-two Joe Andrew and drilling a low angled shot in at the back post. Try as they might in the closing minutes an equaliser eluded the Glens.

Glenafton Athletic 1 (0) Troon 2 (2)

Glenafton’s three game winning run in the league came to an end with a home defeat to Troon. Indeed the Seasiders could have been out of sight if their second spot kick of the half hadn’t thundered off the post to take a 3-0 lead into the break.

The visitors looked lively from the kick off. A sliced clearance by the Glens defence saw Darren McLean challenge Dan McKay for the loose ball just inside the box and referee instantly pointed the spot. McKay dusted himself down and slam home penalty kick to put Troon ahead on 5 minutes.

Troon celebrate at 1-0

Glenafton struggled to make any headway into the Troon box against a well marshalled defence and attempts at goal were restricted to shots from distance while the visitors looked less laboured in their attacks with target man Christian Nade, former Hearts striker, always available for a long ball to initiate another break upfield.

On 18 minutes former Glens player Tony Murphy played a low corner kick into the box where Dean Keenan’s dummy set up a shot for Scott Chatham that as blocked and the ball ended back with Murphy tight on the right to send a Hail Mary ball skyward to the back post where it dropped almost be design for Robert Love to side foot the ball home from a tight angle.

Robert Love makes it 2-0

Ten minutes later the Glens came within a whisker of halving the deficit. Syme fouled Dallas on the outskirts of the box and McLean curled a wonderful free-kick over the wall only for the ball to crash off the post with the keeper rooted to the spot.

bb_DSC_8746.JPG

Darren McLean’s free-kick crashes off the post

On 38 minutes Dallas gathered a throw-in from McLean on the right flank and picked out Andrew at the corner of the box who took a touch before engineering a superb shot from 20 yards forcing Johnstone into an equally superb save with a strong hand pushing the ball high over the bar.

Darren Johnstone pulls off a super save

A minute later a Troon break down the left ended with the ball being played deep into the box where Love’s cut back saw McCrea end up on the deck after Park’s challenge and the referee point to the spot again. Although McKay’s spot kick beat McGarrity’s finger tips by the width of a finger-nail the ball thundered off the inside of the post with such force that the rebound went out for a throw-in.

H/T Glens 0 Troon 2

The Glens were on the front foot for most of the second half with the visitors less of an attacking force. Breaking down a well-marshalled defence however proved a challenge.

Joe Andrew’s  shot from just inside the box was save comfortably by Johnstone and soon after the keeper plucked Moore’s cross destined for Dallas at the back post cleanly out the air. Scott Chatham countered for the visitor with a  mazy run but had ran out of steam by the time he mustered a shot at goal and McGarrity collected easily.

Glens continued to struggle to penetrate the Troon box with any potency and were restricted to shots from distance, On 58 minutes Ally Park sent one wide of the left post with Johnstone scurrying across the face of goal. Five minutes later Dallas lashed a shot from 22 yards that whizzed inches wide of the right post with the keeper beaten.

Chris Dallas and David Syme

With 15 minutes to go McCann broke into the box and claims for a spot-kick after a challenge from the impressive David Syme were waved away. Two minutes later the Glens halved the deficit through fine combination play between Alan Cairns and Findlay Frye. The former’s corner kick was well cleared and the latter gathered the ball 30 yards from goal before giving a defender the slip to return the ball to Cairns still on the right flank. The defender then squared the ball to meet Frye’s run into the box who killed the ball with his left foot before drilling a low shot through a busy box and beyond the reach of the keeper.

Findlay Frye halves the deficit

Glens pressed for the equaliser but the centre back pairing of Syme and Dean Keenan stood firm while Johnstone continued to show a safe pair of hands and punched the ball from the head of substitute Kit Cummins, Glens now playing with four strikers. Half-hearted claims for a penalty following Syme’s challenge on Park cut no mustard with the referee and to rub salt in the wound Johnstone then cleanly held Park’s looping header from the edge of the box. Glens proved too strong for Renfrew with their slick passing game and some clinical finishing. Joe Andrew started the ball rolling, from where he left off last week at Petershill, with a goal on 6 minutes. It began with Kyle McAusland in the centre of defence heading an upfield ball from Frew to the half way line where Andrew quickly knocked it sideways to Leon Murphy to drive forward to the outskirts of the box before slipping a pass to the overlapping Cameron Marlow on the left. In flash the midfielder picked out Chris Dallas’s run and his cutely guided the ball past two defenders and wrong-footed keeper Dale Burgess only for the ball to bounce off the base of the post and roll into the path of the inrushing Joe Andrew to drill a low-angled shot home at the opposite post.

Joe Andrew

On 20 minutes Alan Cairns from deep in his own half played a ball through the middle for Andrew who clipped to Murphy wide on the left and in an instant he killed the ball on his chest and skipped effortlessly past a defender to burst down the left and then cut the ball for Andrew to scoop the ball first time beyond the reach of a stunned keeper and into the net.

Five minutes before the break Glens added a third with another well-worked goal. Marlow stole the ball in the centre circle and played a one-two with Andrew before releasing Murphy to drive down the left again before cutting the ball back for Marlow to hook it into a busy box where it evaded two defenders before falling for Chris Dallas to take a touch before picking his spot from close range.

The visitors struck back just before the break after a ball was played into the box and although Cairns looked to have nicked the ball from its target the match official deemed he used an arm to do and awarded a spot-kick much to the disbelief of the defender. David McKenna kept his cool to slot penalty beyond the reach of Glens goalie Brian MGarrity.

Ten minutes after the re-start a slick one-two between Marlow and Murphy ended with the former picking out Dallas in the box with his back to goal only to be hauled down by the arms of Kieran Healy.  Dallas slammed home the spot-kick to make it 4-1 for the home side.

Four minutes later the fifth goal was a thing of beauty beginning and ending with Findlay Frye. Collecting the ball just inside his own half he played a one-two with Darren McLean and then another with Conor Lynass before playing the ball forward to Andrew who rolled it back to the half-way line for Marlow to loft a long ball up the left for Murphy to chase down at the corner flag. He plays a long ball back to the advancing Marlow who picks out Lynass to play a cute back-heel for Marlow to continue his run into the left hand side of the box before feeding the unmarked Frye bursting into the far side of the box to smash the ball home from

Renfrew pulled one back on 73 minutes after a long ball from the right flank was launched into the box and a collision between keeper and defender resulted in presenting Rikki McIntosh with a tap-in.

Glens had the final say three minutes later through the combined efforts of three second-half substitutes. Ally Park played a one-two with Mick McCann at the half-way line before threading a perfectly paced ball up the left wing for Kit Cummins to collect and charge into the box only for the feet to be taken for him. Up stepped Mick McCann to send the keeper the wrong way from 12 yards.

LYNASS THE CONQUEROR

Conor Lynass returned to his former club Petershill and tormented them all game with his blistering pace, setting up two goals as well as scoring one of his own.

aa_conor_00

Conor celebrates his goal on the stroke of half time

Ally Park was ruled out through injury before kick-off while Dale Moore and Ryan McChesney on the bench were both still nursing injuries.

Glens got to a flying start with Alan Cairns and Leon Murphy combining down the left to win the first corner of the game within a minute. The kick was partially cleared before Conor Lynass and Joe Andrew played a neat 1-2 deep in a packed penalty box but the Glens midfielder was forced to shoot wide through the close attention of centre back Craig Connelly.

On 4 minutes after a Petershill free-kick was floated into the box and headed clear by Kyle McAusland with the ball falling for Chris Hall at the edge of the ‘D’ to thump a cracking volley that cannoned off the head of Craig Menzies on the six-yard line with some force to sail wide for a corner kick. The Glens captain was then floored after a clash of heads with Jamie MacLennan as he defended the corner.

bb_DSC_7904

The home side won another corner-kick on 10 minutes. The decision to play it short back fired as the Glens stole the ball and released it down the left where Murphy and Darren McClean combined before picking out Joe Andrew some 10 yards inside his own half. The striker threaded a perfectly paced pass upfield for Lynass to beat the offside trap for a free run on goal, with Findlay Frye for company and defender Connelly giving chase, only for the outrushing keeper to make a convincing save as Lynass’s shot from the edge of the box. A minute later the midfielder’s header at the back post, from Alan Cairn’s cross, drifted wide of target – perhaps it wasn’t going to be his day!

Play became more evenly balanced for a spell without either side seriously testing the keepers from open play or set pieces.

The breakthrough came it 18 minutes and it was former Petershill player Lynass that was the architect with a blistering run down the right wing taking him deep into the box before cutting the ball across goal for Joe Andrew to stroke home from 3 yards out.

aa_goal01.JPG

Joe Andrew 1-0

Glens enjoyed a good period of possession as they pressed for a second albeit without success. The Peasy struggled to build any meaningful attacks but created couple of half chance either side of the half-hour mark with Chris Hall firing over the bar from 22 yards and keeper Brian McGarrity comfortably saving Chris Wilson’s free-kick from 25 yards.

The visitors lost the menacing Murphy to injury five minutes from the break and brought on Dale Moore, still recovering from injury.

The home side’s corner kick was headed clear by McLean and the ball quickly recovered on the left to be played to the back post where Ian Gold was unlucky to see his header bounce agonisingly inches wide of the post. On 42 minutes Jamie Hamilton threaded a great ball through the middle for Jamie MacLennan to gather at the edge of the box only for the Cairns and McGarrity to combine and block his effort at goal.

bb_DSC_8048.JPG

Alan Cairns on the move

Back came the Glens through Moore who won a corner on the left and soon after another on the right after a fine save by the keeper. In the last action of the half the midfielder tried the left flank again before cutting inside to fire what seemed like a net-bound shot before Gibson got both hands to push it away only for Conor Lynass to pounce and drill the ball into the net from a tight angle.

H/T Petershill 0 Glens 2

A Glens corner in the opening minute of the new half was played to the back post where McLean and Gold both got their heads to the ball which bobbled dangerously about the box before the keeper won the scramble to get it under control.

On 50 minutes Lynass burst up the right and slipped the ball past Chris Wilson before continuing on his overlap only to be chopped down by the beleaguered defender infuriating Lynass’s team mates and the flash of only a yellow card doing little to subdue their wrath.

bb_DSC_8342.JPG

Findlay Frye wins the ball

Five minutes later the Peasy put together a fine passage of play that concluded with Gold threading a fine ball for Dylan Kennedy to gather in his run deep into the box but his shot from the corner of six- yard box flashed well wide of the back post. Soon after, the home side threatened again but MacLennan’s shot from the right-hand side of the box ruffled the side netting.

On 59 minutes the Glens responded in devastating fashion after Lynass wide on the right picked up a pass from Andrew before whipping the ball into the box where it bounced off Connelly’s knee and fell for Dale Moore to lash home an unstoppable shot from 15 yards.

aa_goal03.JPG

Dale Moore 3-0

Glens immediately replaced Cameron Marlow, who had taken a knock, with Ryan McChesney who took up his familiar role at the centre of defence while Kyle McAusland moved into midfield.

Gold made a powerful run through the middle before firing an equally powerful shot from the edge of the box that whizzed inches wide of the post with McGarrity at full stretch.

On 68 minutes Mick McCann came on for Chris Dallas and was soon in the thick of the action when he scooped a Lynass cut-back over the bar from six yards out.

bb_DSC_8388

Mick McCann goes close

Wilson made excellent progress down the left and deep into the box before cutting back for Hall with space and time in his favour only for the striker to drag his shot wide of the post with the goal at his mercy.

Again, the Glens punished Peasy’s missed chance with a fourth goal on 74 minutes. With Connelly in close attention Joe Andrew judged the bounce of an upfield ball perfectly to twist away from the defender and drive to edge of the box where he wrong-footed Wilson before continuing his run and drilling a low shot through the keeper’s legs from 12 yards out.

aa_goal04.JPG

Joe Andrew 4-0

Petershill plugged away in search of a consolation and although they managed to breach the Glens box on occasion it had not been a day for their shooting boots as McGarrity was seldom tested.

Lynass continued to torment down the right and another pin-point cross ended with McCann lashing a header over the bar.

Having lost the last three meetings with Cumnock Juniors last season the Glens looked in determined fashion to put an end to that losing streak.

After a lively start the home side made the breakthrough on 20 minutes.Former Glenafton keeper Ally Semple launched a long ball up the right flank for Paul Burns but Alan Cairns beat him in the air and his downward header was immediately returned up the other end of the park high into the air by Craig Menzies. Cumnock’s back-tracking centre backs, with Glens front men Chris Dallas and Joe Andrew giving chase, had reached the edge of the box by the time the ball descended –James Lundie failed to trap the ball and although Richard Murray got a touch it was a poor one and Dallas stole the ball and slipped it past Semple into the net from 6 yards out. Glens continued to press and Dallas was giving the centre-backs a torrid time before carving out another couple of chances.

Cumnock threatened occasionally and Scott Anson shot at the near post slipped just wide of target.

Back came Glens and doubled their lead on 28 minutes with a goal made by Leon Murphy and finished by Dale Moore. Findlay Frye, deep in his own half, broke down a Cumnock attack and picked out Murphy with a peach of a pass. The midfielder wasted no time in driving forward, initially drifting wide right before cutting infield weaving past a blue shirt after blue shirt before being bundled down on the outskirts of the box only for the ball to fall into the path of Moore, arriving in the left had side of box at speed, to drive a low angled shot in at the far post.

Murphy was the architect of the third goal on 34 minutes after being picked out on the right hand side of the box before cutting inside to shake off the defender before curling a vicious shot that Semple could only parry away before Joe Andrew pounced to force the loose ball over the line from a few yards out.

Further chances came and went against the home side’s way against a rattled and unsettled ‘Nock defence but there was not further scoring before the break.

H/T Glens 3 Cumnock 0

The start of the second half was delayed for 40 minutes after a Cumnock supporter had taken unwell and thankfully later recovered.

Cumnock pulled a goal  back on 49 minutes after a free kick was floated in the box and a powerful glancing header from Robert Patterson, a summer signing from Girvan, flew into the net.

At the other end substitute Mick McCann shot was blocked by the legs of Semple and then smothered Dallas’s mishit attempt to bury the rebound. The keeper then safely held substitute Conor Lynass’s curled shot from outside the box.  His counterpart Brian McGarrity repeated that feat with an inventive shot from Sean McKenzie.  A long clearance from Semple saw he bounce of the ball beat two Glens defenders before it fell for Patterson who hooked a vicious shot that dipped inches over the bar.

Cumnock got themselves back into the game on 78 minutes with a well worked goal. Kyle Faulds drove through the middle of the park before slipping the ball out left to Stephen McKenna to clip the ball into the box where McKenzie’s header was met by the head of Patterson to guide it home beyond the reach of McGarrity.

The visitors’ hopes of salvaging a point were dashed four minutes later. McGarrity threw the ball out to full Alan Cairns on the left to push forward before hitting a cross-field pass that was dummied by Cameron Marlow allowing Chris Dallas to pick up the ball at the edge of the box and blast a right footed shot that Semple saved well but could nothing to prevent Dallas snapping up the loose ball and lash a left-footed shot into the net.

GLENS BAG BONUS POINT AFTER  DRAW WITH ‘FORD

bb_DSC_7790

Glenafton kicked off the new season playing host to Hurlford United in the newly introduced West Region Sectional League Cup which effectively unifies the Ayrshire Ardagh Sectional League Cup and Central Sectional League Cup competitions. Auchinleck Talbot and Darvel Juniors make up the four-team Group 4.

Glens welcomed back midfielder Findlay Frye to the starting line-up in his second spell at Loch Park after signing from Kilwinning Rangers in the summer. New faces on the bench were summer signings striker Kit Cummins and goalkeeper Craig Burns, along with Robert Neill of Glenafton U19s and trialist Rhys Wallace, currently back in Scotland from a soccer scholarship in the USA.

The Loch Park surface was looking in great nick and would be subjected to a gusty wind and sunny intervals between a range of showers from light to heavy.

Although Glens started brightly it was Hurlford that took the lead on 18 minutes after the visitors corner-kick was only partially cleared and the ball fell for Jack Whittaker to strike a low angled shot through a ruck of players that took deflection to wrong foot the keeper before ending in the net.

bb_DSC_6956

The hosts came close to equalising three minutes later when Dale Moore got on the end of a free-kick at the back post only for keeper Chris Murchie to block his shot from a few yards and push the ball onto the bar. The keeper then blocked a low drive from Connor Lynass only for the Glens midfielder to pick up the rebound and set up Cammy Marlow with a shot that was blocked by Liam Caddis at the expense of a corner-kick, the first of three in quick succession that were cleared.

bb_DSC_7154

On the half-hour mark player Paul McKenzie floated a free-kick into the box and the ball eventually fell for fellow former Glens player Ross Robertson to whip a vicious shot just wide of the far post. Glens were quickly on the back on the front foot. A ball played into the box by Alan Cairns for Joe Andrew was headed clear by former Glens player Richie McKillen and fell for Chris Dallas on the edge of ‘D’ and before centre-back Chris Robertson could close him down he hooked the ball into the pitch to send it skiffing across the surface (like a stane across the Afton without the ripples) before it squeezed between the keeper at full stretch and the post to tie the match on 35 minutes.

aa_goal_dallas01

Glens continued to press and two minutes from the break had a strong claim for a penalty as Chris Robertson grabbed a handful of Andrew’s jersey in the box, only for the striker to be flagged offside. The final chance of the half fell to the visitors through Caddis only for McGarrity to pull off a fine and push the shot from 18 yards round the post.

HT Glens 1 Hurlford 1

The visitors forced an early corner which ended with Robertson’s close range being blocked by a sea of red shirts. Soon after the striker performed his defensive duties well as headed clear a Glens corner.  Ten minutes later the home side won another corner which although cleared heralded a period of pressure for the home side. Lynass won the race for a ball down the right drawing the keeper from his line who was then left in no man’s land as the midfielder cut the ball into the box and although McKilllen prevented it reaching its target of Dallas the ball fell for Andrew but as the striker tee-ed up his shot Chris Robertson made a fine tackle.

Minutes later Dallas’s header from a corner looped over the bar. Kyle McAusland combined with Andrew down the right to set up another attack but his effort was blocked and the ball fell for Findlay Frye in acres of space 25 yards from goal  – within a flash he took a touch before curling a shot that took a bounce before beating the keeper low at his right hand post; memories of Camelon Scottish Junior Cup semi-final came flooding back as the popular midfielder celebrated a goal on his return to Loch Park. Glens 2-1 up with 61 minutes gone.

Five minutes later Glens almost doubled their lead after Dallas set up Andrew in the box and although he gave Robertson the slip his attempt to guide beyond the advancing keeper ended the ball slipping past the post.

Midway through the half Hurlford replaced Caddis with former Glens striker Michael Reilly and soon after Glens brought on trialist Wallace for Craig Menzies.

Ford’s new signing Alex McWalters’ free kick from the edge of the box beat the wall but sailed over the bar, while at the other end Ryan McChesney’s long range shot nicked off a defender to send the ball whizzing past the post and the resulting corner was cleared.

With 12 minutes to go Hurlford brought on Ryan Caddis for Paul Byrne . A minute later the visitors were level after good work down the left by Whittaker and his ball across the face of goal intended for the incoming Reilly at the back post was turned into the his own net by the unfortunate McChesney, who had an outstanding game. Ford were now very much on the front foot as they battled for the winner.

Glens brought on the fresh legs in the form of new signing Kit Cummins for Chris Dallas who it seemed had covered every blade of grass on the pitch. Cummins was soon in the thick of it, his shot from outside the box deflected for a corner that was cleared at the near post. Murchie then made a comfortable save from Andrew’s shot from 12 yards. At the other end McAusland got down low to head clear a wicked cross from Whittaker as Robertson threatened to pounce. Marlow cleared the loose ball upfield for Cummins to give chase forcing Murchie to rush out his box but his clearance fell for Andrews only for his attempt to find the empty net from 35 yards to drop over the bar. Both sides tried frantically to fashion a winner in dying minutes without success to set up the penalty shoot-out with the winners earning a bonus point.
