Glenafton made one change from the eleven that started against league leaders Troon at Portland Park last Saturday with Ollie Rowe (unavailable) making way for Leon Murphy.

The team were joined on the pitch before kick off with the Glenafton Athletic 2014 boys club having returned from their annual trip to Flamingo Land, Yorkshire as East Coast Cup winners.

Today’s visitors are second-placed Cumnock Juniors, with of course former Glens player and manager Craig McEwan, now assistant manager of the ‘Nock, while his son Callum is on the bench.

Glens were first to threaten on 5 minutes through a Michael Mullen shot from 22 yards that flew wide of the far post with keeper Blair Currie looking on from the near post.

Soon after Mullen from inside the ‘D’ picked out Leon Murphy to his left, to drive to the bye-line and clip the ball across the face of goal, beyond the reach of the keeper, but no takers.

Play was going back and forth with Tomas Brindley and Jack Lavery looking lively down the right wing. It was from the right that Adam Forde floated a corner to the back post where Corey O’Donnell leapt to bullet a downward header that was pushed off the line by keeper Ollie Ecrepont and the loose ball cleared out the box by Brannan McDermott.

Midway through the half David Craig was hauled off the ball by Lavey inside the Cumnock half the centre-circle. Calum Wilson launched the free-kick high into the right hand side of the box with Craig McCracken the target, only for his leap to be impeded by Darren Brownlie launching his leap with both hands on the Glens man’s shoulders; neither assistant referee or referee were interested!

The visitors finished the half strongly creating numerous chances with breaks down both wings. Their efforts nearly paid of on 32 minutes after O’Donnell gathered the ball on the left-hand side of the box and cut it back into the path of the inrushing Brownlie only for Ecrepont to bravely dive at his feet and smother the ball.

Soon after Glens were forced to make a change after Cammy Ross picked up an injury and was replaced by Sam McKee.

Forde drilled a low corner from the right that somehow managed his way past a ruck of players to fall for Brownlie only to balloon his shot high into the air and over the bar.

In the closing minutes of the half Robbie Buchanan burst down the right and with McKee closing in, he clipped the ball from the edge of the box at the bye-line, to the near post where the alert O’Donnell won the aerial battle only for his header to dip over the junction of the back-post and cross bar.

Spirits were lifted during the break when the Glenafton 2014 side paraded their trophy in front of the home supporters.

Cumnock were first to threaten with a corner kick from the left floated to the near post where Craig outleapt Andrew McDonald and Ecrepont beat two players to get a touch on the loose ball before diving on it at the post.

The visitors continued to press with play switching from right to left where Lavery pushed to the junction of the 18-yard box and bye-line before feeding the ball into a busy goalmouth where Adam Forde was first to react and the guide the ball over the line from two yards out. Glens 0 Cumnock 1, 49 mins.

Glens responded well and won a corner on the right which was cleared out the box only for Wilson to pounce the crack a shot the that whizzed inches high and wide of bar and post

However, just as the Glens enjoyed some possession in the Cumnock, albeit without creating any chances of note, the visitors countered in lethal fashion. A free kick from the right was headed clear off the line at the back post by Ricky Little and the loose ball finally fell for Corey O’Donnell the ball on the right of the six-yard box, where he held off defender before lashing home a shot from a tight angle. Glens 0 Cumnock 2, 61 minutes.

Glens made a change with Ross Lindsay making way for David Blyth.

Cumnock continued to dominate and creating several decent chances before adding a third through Tomas Brindley, scoring from a tight angle on the right hand side of the box. Glens 0 Cumnock 4, 86 minutes.

Glens made two further changes with Craig McCracken and Leon Murphy making way for Blair Anderson and Jamie Low.

Into added time and Cumnock came close to adding a fourth after Lavery leathered the ball from the edge of the ‘D’ that dipped inches over the bar.
