Interim Glenafton manager Hugh ‘Shuggy’ Kerr made one change from the eleven that started against Hurlford midweek with Leon Murphy (unavailable) making way for David Craig.

The table-topping Troon starting eleven included former Glenafton player Dario Viviani while Andy Bell, head coach and former Glens player was in the dug-out.

Glens kicked off on a sun-bathed Portland Park and despite the heat the early encounters raged back and forth at a pace.

On 9 minutes Cammy Ross launched the ball from the outskirts of the Glens box upfield for Michael Mullen to chase it down before breaking into the left-hand side of the box and holding off the incoming Calum Gow only for his back pass to Ross to be intercepted by Leyton Dunlop and the danger cleared.

At the other end Stephen Docherty from within a pocket of defenders threaded a diagonal pass from the edge of the ‘D’ to the right-hand side of the six-yard box for the incoming Kyle Gilroy only for keeper Ollie Ecrepont to dive at his feet and secure the ball.

Back came Troon through Dunlop lobbing a free kick high into a packed Glens box where Ecrepont outleapt Lewis Lovering to punch the ball out of the box which eventually fell for Dario Viviani on the right hand-side to square the ball to Docherty only to be intercepted by Ricky Little. However the ball was fed out to the right again and floated to the back post where Little’s clearing header fell for Lovering only for his shot to whiz wide of the near post.

Troon continued to press and a corner kick from the right curled to the back post where Stephen Bronsky won the aerial battle to power a downward header where Ross guarding the post, hooked the ball clear.  Soon after, a Troon free kick from the left-hand corner of the box was cleared by a double-header from Brannan McDermott.

Midway through the half some respite for the visitors as Ross Lindsay gathered the ball in the centre-circle and slipped it forward to Mullen to weave in between Lewis Allan and Nathan Bair before laying the ball off to Ross on the overlap on the left side of the box, only to overhit the return ball as Mullen broke into the six-yard box.

The home side broke forward again through the lively Gilroy driving towards the ‘D’ before clipping the ball down the right for Lewis Allan to collect and drill it low across the face of goal for Stephen Docherty arriving at the back-post only for Ecrepont to get down and smother the ball.

Play now raged back and forward as Glens enjoyed a good spell of possession in the middle of the park with Lindsay, Ollie Rowe and David Craig chasing down every ball.

Another Troon attack was broken down by McCracken’s powerful header inside in this own half which fell for Ross, tight on the left touch-line, to hook the ball upfield for Mullen to chase only for the leaping Bronsky to intercept sending his header out for a corner on the left. Callum Wilson floated the kick high into the heart of the box only for Lovering to win the aerial battle sending a high looping header up the park.

On 35 minutes it was Lovering, tight of left touchline, that drilled a low ball to Gilroy on the left of the ‘D’ to push forward into the box before cracking a low diagonal shot only for Ecrepont to pull off a fine save and hold the ball tightly as Viviani closed in for any spillage.

Wilson for the Glens was enjoying the closing minutes of the half and picked out McDermott on the left to curl a ball into the box for the incoming Rowe where Lovering’s header sent the ball high into the air forcing the pair to leap again and it was Rowe that headed it back towards Mullen to blast a shot from outskirts of the box that rebounded of Gow and fell for Wilson to unleash a thunderbolt from 30 yards only for the airborne keeper Dale Burgess to pull off a spectacular save and push it wide for a corner. Lindsay curled the kick into the goalmouth and although Little won the header the ball was eventually cleared.

At the other end Dunlop, from wide on the left, floated a free kick high into the box where Little won the aerial battle with Bronsky but it soon became apparent the Troon centre-back had taken a sore one and play was stopped for treatment – and a water break in the heat for the other players.

Soon after the half-time whistle blew.

HT Troon 0 Glens 0

Troon kicked off and they had enjoyed a good spell of early possession in the Glens half before the visitors broke the deadlock.

Peyton floated a free kick into a busy box only for McCracken to head it clear. Ross quickly gathered the ball and switched play from the left to Wilson who in turned released Mullen to break up the right and then cut inside into the box, drawing the keeper to the six-yard line, by which time the back-tracking Gow arrived and pushed the Glens striker to the ground, as he lined up to shoot. Although the referee pointed to the spot, Gow only received a yellow card despite the ‘last-man’ appeals from the Glens dug-out, since the Troon defender made no attempt to play the ball.

As the dust settled, Michael Mullen stepped up and slammed the spot kick into the right corner of the net beyond the rage of Burgess at full stretch. Troon 0 Glens 1, 51 minutes.

Soon after, Wilson, noting that Burgess was a good 15 yards of his line, launched an ambitious high ball from the half-way line which flew high over the cross bar.

Back came Troon with another free kick deep into the box where Little beat Bronsky (as opposed to Bronskie beat!) in the air and set up another stramash with the visitors eventually clearing the danger.

On 60 minutes Troon made a double substitution with Dario Viviani and Stephen Docherty making way for Sam Jamieson and Dean Fulton.

The home side laid siege to the Glens goal but could not break down a resolute defence – a ball from the right flashed across the goalmouth with no takers while soon after Gilroy, down the left, pushed to the bye-line to clip the ball to the blue shirts at the near post only for McCracken to kick it clear before heading clear the second attempt.

A Troon corner from the left saw Lewis Lovering win the aerial battle and his header seemed net bound only for Craig to head the ball off the line which was met by Bronsky but his overhead kick of sorts drifted wide of the box and the ball quickly floated deep into the six- yard box where McDermott outleapt Gow and the danger cleared.

Midway through the half the Glens countered with Mullen in space gathering the ball inside the Troon half, and squared the ball to Craig on the overlap to drive forward towards the box with Lovering for company, indeed he won the ball momentarily only for Craig to recover it on the bye-line. With Burgess advancing to the outskirts of the right edge of six-yard box, Craig played a diagonal pass back to the incoming Rowe only for Bronsky to get a touch and Gow clear the loose ball upfield.

On 78 minutes Kyle Faulds replaced Lewis Allan.

Troon enjoyed another spell of intense pressure in and around the Glens box but again the visitors mopped up the danger one way or another. Of particular note was Ecrepont’s incredible point blank save from Jamieson’s close range header that he clawed away from the goalmouth.

On 84 minutes Glens replaced Cammy Ross, after a tremendous shift, with David Blyth and the young forward was soon in the thick of the action. Rowe cushioned a header over the heads of two defenders for Blyth to chase down and although he appeared to have beaten Peyton to the ball in the box, as keeper Burgess advanced to the six-yard line, the Troon captain held of the challenge and sent the ball out for a corner kick.

On 90 minutes Glens replaced David Craig, after a tremendous shift, with Sam McKee. A minute later Burgess came well out of his box to launch a free kick upfieldhigh towards the left post from where Bronski headed it across the face of goal only for Peyton to return the ball to the back post where the sliding Sam Jamieson slammed the ball which appeared to hit the underside of the bar and seemingly adjudged to have crossed the line before bouncing wide of the far post. Troon 1 Glens 1, 91 minutes.

The home side pressed for a winner through Jamieson bursting down the right to the bye-line before whipping the ball high into the goal mouth for Lovering, leaping high with Lee Duncanson, the Glens captain taking a sore one, as the ball drifted away from the danger area.

Of course the three points would have precious for Glenafton, however the performance throughout the team in sweltering condtions was greatly admired by the travelling support.
