Good luck Jamie

pic_JamieMcGeogheganToday Glenafton say goodbye to Jamie McGeoghegan as he heads south for pastures new,  a great loss for the club and a fantastic opportunity for Jamie.

He joined the Glens in the summer of 2013, one of a host of new signings as new manager Tommy Bryce set out to rebuild the side. Jamie missed only one league game and one cup game during the season and topped the appearance table with 38 in total. Classy and versatile , Jamie could play at the heart of the defence or glide effortlessly through the midfield to set up an Afton attack.

aa_jamiemcgeoghanThe season ended with that bitter-sweet Scottish Junior Cup final defeat at Rugby Park that for the right reasons will always be remembered for the bond created between the players and the #Afton Army, with Jamie adding an HNC (“Honorary New Cumnockian”) to his impressive growing list of qualifications.

Glenafton Athletic Ardagh Cup Winner 2014/15

The new season was only a few months old when the Glens triumphed at Troon in defeating Auchinleck Talbot in the Ardagh Glass Cup Final with a faultless display. Adding to his cup winners medal Jamie also topped the appearance table again with 35 in the season.

aa_jamie00

It’ll come as no surprise to learn that Jamie currently sits top of that table this season having missed only one game to add another 16 appearances to his tally and bring his grand total for Glenafton to 89 appearances. He added a new dimension to his game recently — a goal in the opponent’s net 🙂 . What a goal too, a 25/30 yarder , the 13th in the game in the 14-0 Scottish Junior Cup win over Newmachar United. Those that dare utter the word fluke were made to eat their words when Jamie doubled his tally with an even more impressive strike in the recent 4-2 victory over Irvine Meadow, sadly due to back-to-back postponements over the last two week-ends, in what proved to be his last competitive game for the club.

Jamie also brought celebrity status to the club. His ‘front of house; charms in Glasgow’s fashionable West End won over weather-girl Judith Ralston , who regularly tweets her congratulations on an Afton victory !

It just remains to thank Jamie on behalf of everyne at Glenafton Athletic to thank him for his service on the park and his affable manner off it, a true gentleman. We would like to wish Jamie all the best and every success in the future and of course there will always be a warm welcome at Loch Park.

Jamie Hay: Scored his first Glens goal

The Glens travelled to Greenfield Park to face Shettleston Juniors to contest the first ever league match between the two clubs. The visitors began with the same starting elven that kicked off in the victory over Irvine Meadow the previous Saturday.

Both sides created some decent chances before the Glens were awarded a penalty with the hand-ball earning the centre-back a second yellow card and reducing the home side to 10 men. Former Clyde goalkeeper & Dunfermline (too name a few ) keeper Bryn Halliwell pulled off a fine save from Joe Andrew’s spot-kick. Just before the break the visitors won another penalty and Jamie Hay, who impressed throughout the match, made no mistake from 12 yards out to put the Glens ahead with his first goal for the club. H/T Shettleston 0 Glenafton 1

Soon after the restart another 2nd yellow card incident reduced Shettleston to 9 men and is often the case they put up a spirited fight not just defensively but also in pursuit of an equaliser. Indeed it wasn’t until the last kick of the game that the outcome was sealed with John Paul Boyle finding the net to seal the points and making in three league wins in a row for the New Cumnock side. Saturday 7th November 2015,  Loch Park , New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 4 (1)

IRVINE MEADOW 2 (1)

Glenafton made one change from the side that started against Arthurlie last week with John Paul Boyle replacing the suspended Darren McGill. Mick McCann made a return to the bench having returned from his Sahara Desert Trek in aid of the children’s charity Whizz-Kidz.

Meadow made a lively start and came close to taking the lead within two minutes after Gary McCann’s cross from the right was cut across the face of goal and Shaun Fraser’s drive beat keeper Brian McGarrity only for Ally Park to be in the right place to head the ball of the line. Soon after defender Chris Evan’s overlap down the right ended with his cross being cleared and so too the resultant corner-kick.

On 7 minutes Glens carved out their first chance after Joe Andrew fashioned a shot from the corner of the box which whizzed wide of the post. Four minutes later the striker skipped past a defender before unleashing a powerful drive from the edge of the ‘D’ to force a fine one-handed saved from keeper Graeme Shepherd to push the ball over the bar. The corner kick that followed was cleared and a quick break ended with McGarrity running from his line to recover the ball at the corner of his box.

The home side began to enjoy some good possession with surging runs from deep by Jamie MGeoghegan and fine interplay between Andrew and John Paul Boyle up front catching the eye. On 14 minutes Boyle’s pressure wide on the left forced Jamie Darroch into a fluffed pass-back and the Glens striker quickly snapped up the gift and burst into the box before slipping the ball beyond the outstretched leg of Shepherd. A minute later Boyle played a one-two in the box with Andrew before drilling a shot wide of target.

On 17 minutes the visitors drew level following a quick break down the left by Fraser and cross to the back post which was headed back by McCann and looked to be cleared by McGeoghegan only for a poor touch to give possession away and the ball snapped by Liam Finnegan and quickly squared to Ross MacPherson with time and space to pick his spot and fire home from six yards out.

The game entered a phase where possession was equally shared and clear cut chances were thin on the ground. On the half hour mark Meadow pressure produced some head tennis in the Glens’ box and McGeoghegan won the finally rally to prevent MacPherson’s close range header. Three minutes later Craig McGuffie picked up the ball on the half way-line and weaved past a host of blue shirts before breaching the Meadow box only for Darroch’s last ditch tackle to stop the shot at goal. In the closing seconds Boyle chased down Andrew’s head flick only for Shepherd to race from his line to smother the ball with Evans in support. H/T Glens 1 Meadow 1

As in the first half the visitors started off strongly and a break down the left by Mark Keenan set up a one-two in the box between Finnigan & Fraser which ended with a well-timed tackle by Park on the former. The home side were forced to replace the injured Jamie Hay with Ryan McChesney and quickly had to regroup as Meadow continued to press. Back-to-back corner kicks concluded with the second being partially cleared and the ball quickly lobbed back into the danger area where MacPherson headed the ball back to  Chris Evans in acres of space and defender calmly slotted the ball beyond McGarrity. Home protests for offside were instantly dismissed and the visitors were ahead after 52 minutes. Three minutes later McGarrity did well to get down low to save Fraser’s shot from the corner of the six yard box.

A minute later Glens created their first chance of the half after Mick Wardrope played a neat one-two with McGuffie to progress deep into the box only for Marc Twaddle’s challenge to take the steam out of his shot and Shepherd gathered comfortably.

On 58 minutes the Glens drew level with an excellently executed goal beginning with the architect Boyle. He shook off Robert Halliday before skipping to the right hand side of the box and after feigning to square the ball to a team-mate he accelerated past Darroch to the bye-line and chipped a glorious ball into the danger area taking three blue shirts out of play and could look on to watch Joe Andrew rise above Evans and bullet a downward header home.

Joe Andrew heads home the equaliser

A minute later Fraser had the ball in the net but not before the offside flag snuffed out premature celebrations. Nevertheless Meadow continued to press and Fraser’s near post header from Halliday’s cross went inches wide. Midway through the half a scramble in the Glens’ box ended with the visitors winning a free kick on the edge of the box and although Fraser curled it past the wall the ball sailed well over the bar.

Having weathered the mini-storm the hosts began to press with some regularity. Park’s throw-in from the right was gathered by Andrew on the dead ball line before he clipped the ball back for the incoming Dan Orsi to power a long angled shot just wide of the post. Soon after Wardrope’s corner kick was partially cleared and the ball fell for McGuffie some 20 yards out and his shot through a crowded box was well held by the keeper. The pressure delivered dividends on 72 minutes after Boyle slipped the ball to Wardrope on the left and after cutting into the box he threaded the ball to Andrew who in a flash swivelled to thrash the ball between two defenders and the flat-footed Shepherd into the welcoming net.

With their tails up the Glens went in search of more through another seemingly effortless surging run by McGeoghegan who slipped the ball to McGuffie who in turn fed Boyle wide on the left and although his whipped cross caught Shepherd unawares, Darroch was on hand to clear the ball before Andrew could pounce. Orsi recovered the ball and rolled it back to Jamie McGeoghegan who took a touch or two before launching the ball from 30/35 yards leaving players and supporters alike to follow its trajectory and watch its descent over the keeper at full stretch and its touch down cushioned by the rigging of the net. The Glens now had a two goal cushion with a quarter of hour or so remaining.

Although Meadow’s heads never went down the hopes of another fight back had been extinguished. Glenafton brought on the fresh legs of Mick McCann to replace the outstanding John Paul Boyle who headed for the dug-out to rapturous applause. MCann was soon in the thick of it and a Glens’ corner kick was punched away to safety by Shepherd and at the other end a glancing close range header came close to halving the deficit but there was to be no more scoring. ARTHURLIE 1 (1)

Striker Mick McCann was still unavailable for selection and with midfielder Chris Malone placed on the transfer list the Glens made a number of changes to the starting eleven that faced Jeanfield Swifts last week. Chris Meikle, Daniel Orsi , Craig McGuffie and Michael Wardrope replaced Craig Menzies, Ryan McChesney , Chris Malone and John Paul Boyle.

The home side threatened early coming close a couple of times before Glen countered through Craig McGuffie with a trademark run before whipping a dangerous cross into the box which was cut out well by keeper Zander Cowie. Arthurlie took the lead on 15 minutes after a Connor McGlinchey free kick into the box eventually fell for Steven Tart who fired home. Keeper Brian McGarrity prevented the hosts from doubling their lead after pulling off a fine save from Gary Smith.

The visitors enjoyed a good spell and a powerful run by top scorer Darren McGill set up a chance for Dan Orsi only for Cowie to foil him with an outstanding save. Another fine run by McGill ended with Gary Carroll pulling back the Glens midfielder at the expense of a free kick, but McGill paid the price after a swinging arm caught his assailant, and an early bath the outcome. Striker Chris Dallas came within a whisker of doubling ‘Lie’s advantage just before the break after his effort beat McGarrity but skimmed past the post.

H/T Arthurlie 1 Glenafton 0

Ten minutes into the second half and the ten men of Glenafton turned the tables to take the lead. On 52 minutes Cowie got down low to block a shot but could do little to prevent the alert Michael Wardrope from pouncing and slamming home the equaliser.

Two minutes later and former Arthurlie player Joe Andrew fired the Glens in front in spectacular fashion lashing the ball home from 30 yards out.

With 15 minutes to go it was 10-a-side after Gavin Rushford earned a second yellow card for his reaction to a robust tackle. Glenafton enjoyed some decent possession and looked the likelier to add to their lead with a Chris Meikle effort the pick of the chances. The home side nearly sneaked a shared of the points in the closing seconds after a goalmouth scramble before McGarrity claimed the loose ball.

Scottish Junior Cup 2nd round

Glens Scottish run brought to a Swift Holt

Under darkening skies and the threat of heavy rain Glenafton Athletic and their opponents Jeanfield Swifts along with the match officials line up together in unity before kick-off to Show Racism the Red Card.

Glenafton Athletic & Jeanfield Swifts

Glenafton Athletic & Jeanfield Swifts

The sides had met on two previous occasions in the Scottish Junior Cup with honours even, the Swifts winning 6-1 at Perth (1969/170) and Glens replying with a 3-0 win at New Cumnock (2001/02).

Glenafton made two changes to the starting eleven that lost at home to Pollok in the league last Saturday with Joe Andrew coming in for the unavailable Mick McCann and John Paul Boyle replacing Chris McGuffie.

The visitors kicked off but quickly surrendered possession and Chris Malone’s head flick was gathered by Joe Andrew at the edge of box before a cute touch released Jamie McGeoghegan on the left to whip a ball across the face of goal which although keeper Mark Mitchell spilled the attentive Sean Fleming made a last ditch tackle to prevent John Paul Boyle from burying the loose ball. Two minutes later Swifts striker Chris McLeish tried his luck from 20 yards out but the accuracy of shot didn’t much its power and the ball zoomed well wide of the mark.

On 11 minutes the hosts took the lead and in some style. Jamie Hay robbed Swifts of posssession and picked out Boyle on the half way line who skipped past two defenders and with options on his right and left, chose Andrew on the left he quickly rolled back across the 18 yard line to McGeoghegan who slipped a perfectly timed pass for the overlapping Ally Park who slammed the ball past the advancing keeper and into the net.

Glens spurned a chance to add to their two minutes later after Andrew and Boyle caused panic in a busy Swifts box without either able to get a clean shot at goal and eventually Andrew’s second attempt held by Mitchell.

After a shaky start Jeanfield settled well and began to see much more of the ball and looked lively on the break particularly through Kevyn Fowler and Lee Baker. Indeed it was after a Fowler run had been ended by a tackle from Ryan McChesney, earning the Glens defender a yellow card, that Swifts drew level on 23 minutes. Free-kick specialist Anthony Holt from 22 yards out lashed the ball beyond the Glens’ wall and the outstretched arms of McGarrity into the far corner of the net for his 10th goal of the season.

With their tails up Swifts pushed for a second and Daniel Kelly curled a shot from the edge of the box that beat the keeper but slipped wide of the post. The home side had then McGarrity to thank for keeping his nerve as Baker broke into the box and the keeper pushed him wide of goal before blocking a shot with a foot and then repeated the feat as Baker tried from a tighter angle, the ball then sailing high over the bar.

With 10 minutes to go Andrew made good progress into the box to reach the dead-ball line with Fleming in close attention. The Swifts’ defender lost his footing ,slipped out of play and then appeared to pull back Andrew’s leg as he tried to recover the loose ball, only for his penalty claim to be dismissed. A minute later the Glens’ striker burst into the box again to play a one-two with Boyle before Chris Anton and Mitchell combined to block his effort. Darren McGill then slipped the ball to Jamie Hay and his thundering shot from 22 yards sailed high and wide of target.

At the other end Chris Dodd tried his luck from a similar distance with the ball being held well by McGarrity, but the keeper was soon back in action after a Glens’ corner had been cleared leaving Kelly, the ball carrier, and McLeish to swiftly break upfield. On reaching the box Kelly took solitary defender Craig Menzies out of play by slipping the ball to McLeish only for his low drilled shot to be blocked by MGarrity’s right foot on the six yard line.

H/T Glens 1 Swifts 1

The hosts kicked off and again they made a bright start and forced a couple of corner-kicks the second of which ended with Park towering above Fleming to bullet a header into the six yard box which was eventually cleared with the keeper stranded on the ground. A third corner-kick followed soon after, this too cleared by a determined defence.

On 51 minutes Jeanfield earned their first corner-kick of the second half and although this was partially cleared the ball was quickly recovered and returned to Dodd on the left flank who clipped it to the near post where Holt, with his back to goal, took a touch before hooking the ball to the back post only for McGarrity at full stretch to claw the ball away from the line but could do nothing to stop the alert Chris McLeish from lashing it home from close range.

Play became bogged down for some time with further chances thin on the ground. With half an hour to go Malone and McGill exchanged heated words and were immediately replaced with Craig McGuffie and midweek signing Michael Wardrope. While Swifts also made a change.

Glens pressed for the equaliser and replaced Boyle with Daniel Orsi but struggled to unpick a well drilled defence while always wary of being caught on the break. Park won another header in a packed box but the ball slipped wide of the post.

Ally Park wins another header

Mitchell then pushed an angled shot from Andrew wide for a corner kick which led to another, which was then cleared. On 77 minutes Swifts won a free kick on the outskirts of the box and as Holt stepped up a travelling supporter warned ‘he usually gets two a game!” – on this occasion the wall and keeper were indeed beaten but the ball crashed off the post.

Back came the Glens through Park, who with his progress deeper into the box blocked squared the ball for McGuffie only for his shot from 18 yards to go well wide. Orsi then shook off Anton before bursting into the box only to be bundled to the ground by player-manager Ross Gunnion, his appeals for a penalty quickly dismissed. A Glens’ free-kick into the box was eventually gathered by Mitchell before Orsi’s angled-drived whizzed wide of the far post.

Anthony Holt makes it 3-1

Anthony Holt makes it 3-1

The last word belonged to Anthony Holt. In the 5th minute of added time after a long kick-out by the keeper was headed on Holt kept his cool and with a perfect weight lobbed the ball high over the head of the outrushing McGarrity and in the fading light he knew before anyone else in the ground where the ball would finish … back of the net…. in what was the last kick of the game. POLLOK  4 (2)

Glenafton made two changes to the starting 11 that faced Larkhall Thistle in the West of Scotland Cup last Saturday with Daniel Orsi and Joe Andrew making way for Jamie Hay and Chris McGuffie. Like last week the home side found themselves 2-0 down before the midway point of the first half, however there was to be reversal, despite a determined effort.

Pollok took the lead in 8 minutes after catching the Glens cold with a quickly taken free-kick was rolled to former Cumnock midfielder Colin Williamson who had time to take a touch before lashing a left footer from 25 yards out into the net through a busy box and deceiving keeper Brian McGarrity.

The visitors continued to press and double their lead on 22 minutes while the hosts had yet to test their opponents keeper. A last ditch tackle by Jamie Hay brought an excellent run by Steven Higgins. The same player acted quickly to take a short corner to John Sweeney who clipped the ball into the six yard box for the inrushing Chris Walker to bullet home a header.

Play moved into a phase were possession was much more even and the home side came close when Chris Malone’s cross was met by Mick McCann and his glancing header flashed inches wife of the post. Robbie Winters header at the other end suffered the same fate.

Darren McGill

Darren McGill

Six minutes before the break the home side pulled on back after Jamie McGeoghegan switched play from tight on the right flank to the left hand corner of the penalty box where Darren McGill met Malone’s flick-on to drill a low angled dive into the far corner beyond keeper Jordan Longmuir at full stretch. McCann came within a whisker of levelling the match after he beat Walker to the jump to meet Hay’s free kick only for his header to beat the keeper and crash of the post. H/T Glens 1 Pollok 2

The second half continued in the same vein that the first had finished with both sides creating a similar number of chances, albeit more from set pieces than open play, the game now in the ‘next goal is crucial ‘phase. The visitors came when although Williamson’s free kick whipped into the six yard missed its targets of Paul Gallacher and Walker the ball crashed off the bar. At the other end Chris McGuffie’s shot from distance toasted Longmuir’s fingers of both hands.

Joe Andrew

Joe Andrew

In 76 minutes Pollok restored their two goal cushion when Walker’s downward header from a corner kick seemed destined to land in the hands of McGarrity only for David Winters to get the slightest of touches to diverT the ball into the net. Two minutes later back came the Glens through some excellent build up play with Hay picking out substitute Dan Orsi who quickly released Ally Park down the right on the overlap and his cross into the box was met at the near post by substitute Joe Andrew to deftly guide the ball home. Longmuir then pulled off a fine save from Andrew as he finished off another fine passing move.

With a minute remaining Pollok cleared a Glens corner and broke upfield and Tom Hanlon picked out Robbie Winters in the box, who took a touch before finishing in some style from 16 yards.

Show Racism the Red Card Scotland

SHOWRACISMREDCARD

Fortnight of Action 2015 – Scotland: Website Article

Welcome to Show Racism the Red Card’s annual Fortnight of Action. The 2015 Fortnight of Action will unite Scottish football in making a stand against racism. We believe that it is vital to highlight the anti-racism message at this time, in conjunction with Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE).

Scottish Junior FA clubs will make a stand against racism over one weekend whether at home or away. We have coordinated the participation of the clubs’ actions to make it the biggest and most high profile fortnight so far.

At SJFA matches, clubs will be united in calling for an end to racism in football and in society. Players in over 40 European countries are involved in similar events as part of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network against racism and discrimination.

Show Racism the Red Card has received excellent support from football clubs, football authorities and football fans over the length and breadth of Scotland – we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all. We have heard of many instances where supporters have been proactive in promoting the anti-racism message, making it clear that racism and discrimination are not welcome at their club. We urge fans to continue to support the anti-racism message; it is the responsibility of us all to ensure that it is carried beyond the Fortnight of Action and beyond the terraces.

“The SJFA acknowledge that racism is a form of oppression. We aim to support and embrace diversity and difference through zero tolerance to racism and discrimination of any kind, education of our young and our actions both on and off the park.” Tom Johnstone Scottish Junior FA.

The SRtRC campaign will continue to speak to all football clubs, the football authorities and the police to eradicate all forms of racist behaviour.

The SJFA and its clubs deplore all forms of racism and any racist behaviour will not be tolerated within SJFA.

This year the campaign has continued to develop partnerships with local authorities to deliver educational workshops combined with football coaching sessions in a number of regions. The workshops are delivered by a dedicated team of education workers and ex-professional footballers. They are a very positive method of
educating our young people about the negative impact racism has on Scottish society.

Here’s a brief outline of what’s taking place during the Fortnight of Action this year:

  • Anti-racism football festivals and projects across Scotland.
  • Show Racism the Red Card actions at SPFL, Scottish Women’s Premier League, Scottish Women’s Football League, Scottish Junior Football matches.
  • ‘Unite Against Racism’ actions at UEFA Champions League fixtures.
  • Educational workshops in schools and community groups across Scotland.

Football is a sport that is followed by people across the world, and football matches should be an enjoyable experience for all, whatever their background. We all have a part to play in stamping out racism in football and society.

If you see or hear racism or sectarianism at any level of football, please report it to the stewards or police.

Our website also includes updates on Fortnight of Action events and more information on the Show Racism the Red Card campaign in Scotland.

LARKHALL THISTLE 2 (2)

Glenafton fought back from two down at the break to defeat Larkhall Thistle 3-2 in the West of Scotland Cup 1st round match at Loch Park as the visitors finished with 9 men.

The Glens created a couple of chances in the opening encounters both of which created decent saves from keeper Alan Colquhoun the first a Chris Malone shot from the edge of the box and the second a close range glancing header from Mick McCann.

However the visitors looked lively with the forward play of Graham Gracie in particular catching the eye and on 12 minutes took the lead after Ryan Innes capitalised on a defensive lapse to gather a ball from Gary McStay and slot the ball home from close range.

The visitors doubled their lead on 20 minutes after Scott Nicol and Gracie combined in the box to set up Gary McStay and the former Shotts midfielder duly obliged with a sweetly struck shot that gave keeper Brian McGarrity no chance.

Thistle continued to press and three minutes later McGarrity got a strong hand to a cross from the left by Gracie and pressure from Craig Menzies prevented from McStay making more of the chance to bury the loose ball.

Although the home side struggled to sustain any fluency in their play the occasional half chance was still being fashioned. On 32 minutes Joe Andrew’s through ball into the box saw McCann give defender Niall Reynolds the slip before angling a shot from the corner of the six yard box only for the keeper to be well placed to gather the shot safely.

The visitors quickly broke upfield and after a powerful run down the left Gracie forced his way into the box only for his shot to be deflected over the bar by Ally Park and the Glens mop up the resultant corner-kick.

Gleafton enjoyed their best spell of pressure in the closing 10 minutes of the half and on 38 minutes a free kick from 25 yards cannoned off the Larkie wall and the loose ball snapped up by McCann to drive into the box only for Colquhoun to pull off a great save as the stiker tried to curl his shot beyond the diving keeping into the corner of the net.

Glenafton replaced Dan Orsi and Joe Andrew with Chris Meikle and Craig McGuffie and within a minute of the restart had halved the deficit.

Park stormed down the right flank and shook off the attention of Paul Burns and although his cut back from the goal-line was blocked by Neil Schoneville he quickly recovered the ball and rolled it back to Craig McGuffie at the corner of the 18 yard box to take a touch before curling a cute shot into the far corner with keeper Colquhoun rooted to the spot.

To add salt to their wounds, during their next attack, Larkhall half-hearted appeals for a spot kick were waved away. On 50 minutes Park’s tackle in the middle of the park sparked a melee and when the bodies had been separated defender Schoneville received his marching orders and Burns booked for his protests; the latter replaced by Mark McKeever soon after.

The home side’s tails were up and Thistle conceded a couple of free kicks on the outskirts of the box, neither of which tested the keeper. Malone then slipped a fine pass to McGuffie who twisted and turned in the box and on this occasion his curled shot lacked the power and height to beat Colquhoun.

On 65 minutes Glenafton drew level from a well-executed corner-kick that saw Ryan McChesney win the aerial battle to head the ball back to the edge of the six yard box where Ally Park soared head and shoulders above two defenders to loop his header in at back post as Colquhoun clambered to get a hand to the ball.

Two minutes later McGuffie shrugged off one defender before bursting into the box and with another defender tracking his movement he picked his moment to slip the ball to Darren McGill who drilled a low angled drive beyond the keeper from 8 yards out.

Glens continued to push forward and another powerful run down the right by Park ended with his cut back clear by Reynolds as McCan waited to pounce and Thistle cleared the corner-kick that followed. The visitors replaced McStay with Andy Brown and with 15 minutes to go were reduced to 9 men after the luckless Gracie earned a second yellow card.

The hosts created several more chances including a lob from McGuffie that beat Colquhoun but dropped over the bar and a shot from McCann that also beat the keeper but hit the post.

In the last minute of regulation time the keeper joined his team-mates for a corner-kick and as the Glens defence scrambled the ball clear it fell to Jordan Marshall only for his shot to be blocked in the box by Meikle initiating cries for hand ball. While theses appeals were waved away Glens broke upfield and McGill’s attempt to find the empty net from some distance out sailed over the bar.

Glenafton earned another couple of corner kicks that came to nothing while Colquhoun went upfield for a long throw-in which also came to nothing and the final whistle saving him the spring back to his own goal.

Saturday 26th September Loch Park , New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 14 (8)

NEWMACHAR UNITED 0 (0)

A minute’s silence was held prior to kick-off in memory of former Glenafton player Jim Doherty who passed away recently. Jim played in the Cumnock Juniors side that won the the Scottish Junior Cup in 1978/79 and signed for Notts County the following season. He later returned to Scotland and was captain for the Glens for a time.

Glenafton were delighted to welcome Newmachar United from the North First Division (East) for the Scottish Junior Cup 1st round tie in what was the first meeting between the two sides. The home side made several changes to the starting eleven that faced Hurlford United a fortnight ago.  In came Craig McGuffie, Jamie Hay, John Adam and John Paul Boyle for Ally Park, Alan Cairns, Chris Malone and Joe Andrew.

Four goals in a five minute spell for Glenafton effectively killed off thi s Scottish Junior Cup 1st round tie with just over quarter of an hour gone. Dan Orsi started the ball rolling getting down on the six yard line to head home a corner kick on 11 munutes.

Newmachar’s keeper Ross Chapman pulled off the two great saves to stem the tide and indeed at the other end Stuart Riley pulled off a good save from Glens’ goalie Brian McGarrity.

The home side then produced another four goal burst in the closing ten minutes of the half. On 34 minutes Craig McGuffie gathered the ball on the right hand corner of the box and after a couple of touches curled a low shot through a ruck of players into the far corner of the goal.

Two minutes later McCann struck again after a great solo run through a host of defenders, he drew the keeper from the line before slotting the ball into the net.

Five minutes after the re-start Adam won the ball in the middle of the park and picked out Boyle who with a well timed pass set  Darren McGill on his way to securing his hat-trick after breaking forward and from the 18 yard line slam a low hard shot beyond the reach of the outrushing Chapman.

Just after the hour mark McGuffie collected a pass from Boyle and kept his cool to lob the ball over the stranded keeper and into the gaping net.

Keeper Chapman pulled off more notable saves as the Glens continued to push forward and on 70 minutes they added to their tally. Ally Park motored down the right flank before bursting into the box to lay off to McCann who played the ball back to McGill to loft a ball to the back post where Boyle stole in to guide his header home with the keeper rooted on his line.

There was little either the keeper could do when Jamie McGeoghegan picked up a square ball from Adam and from 25 yards out lashed the ball into the ball into the top corner of the net – unlucky for some and now 13-0.
