Glenafton made one change to the starting line-up that faced Petershill on Saturday with John Paul Boyle replacing the injured Mick McCann up front.

In a game of few chances it was Auchinleck that secured all three points with a goal in each half. Good play deep in the left hand side of the Glens box by Kier Milliken ended with the ball being clipped to the back post for Graham Wilson to ghost in and guide the ball home.  Soon after the restart Dwayne Hyslop lashed home an unstoppable free kick from the edge of the box into the top right had corner of the net.

PETERSHILL 0 (0)

Glenafton made a number of changes to the starting eleven that faced Ardeer Thistle in midweek. Back came Brian McGarrity in goal for David Buchanan and Joe Andrew replaced Chris Dallas upfront. In defence Jamie McGeoghegan, now working in London, made a surprise return to the club with Chris Meikle a late injury scare not making the line-up. Jamie partnered Ryan McChesney while Cameron Marlow filled the unfamiliar left-back slot and what a shift he put in.

The mid-week summer-like heat had been replaced with a cold sharp wind as the blue- shirted North Glasgow team kicked-off against the red tops of the New Cumnock side. A couple of half chances came and went at either end before the Glens were forced to make an early change after Mick McCann pulled up and was replaced with Chris Dallas after 10 minutes.

Two minutes later the visitors were unfortunate not to take the lead after great feet by Ciaran McElroy unzipped the Glens defence before he angled a cracking shot from 23 yards out only for the ball to thunder off the cross bar. Petershill retrieved the ball and Jordon Chisholm wide on the right whipped the ball across the face of goal and although Peter Bradley did well to connect with the ball first time his shot sailed high and wide of target.

Ciaran McElroy (No 7) hits the bar !

Glenafton hit the woodwork two minutes later after David Gray’s free-kick from 25 yard out on the right hand side of the box beat the wall but crashed off the post. On 16 minutes Dallas turned the Peasy defence before being brought down at the left hand corner of the box. The ball was clipped to the back post where Ally Park’s downward header was pounced on by Dan Orsi and from the tightest of angles his shot cannoned off the base of the aforementioned post. The home side kept up the pressure and Dallas picked out Craig McGuffie and his snapshot flew wide of the post.

Chris Dallas

Peasy applied a period of sustained pressure without penetrating their opponents’ box as the Glens back-line defended manfully. The game was punctuated with a series of free kicks at either end which failed to create any openings to seriously test either keeper.

On 25 minutes McChesney broke down a Peasy attack at the edge of the box and quickly released the ball upfield for McGuffie to gather and push forward to create a three v two situation with Joe Andrew and Dallas matching his run. The midfielder opted to go for goal and his curled shot from 20 yards pulled off a great save from keeper FrancisHughes who managed with an outstretched arm to thumb the ball wide for a corner kick that was eventually cleared.

aa_a_craigmcguffie.jpg

Craig McGuffie

At the other end the ball fell to James Brough in space, deep in the right hand side of the box but his well struck his shot flashed well wide of the far post. Jordan Kennedy then tried his luck from 25 yards and although his shot was on target it lacked in power to bother keeper Brian McGarrity. The home side finished the half the stronger in terms of possession but in keeping with the rest of the game chances were thin on the groundwork.

H/T Glens 0 Petershill 0

The early encounters of the new half quickly adopted the pattern of its predecessor with each side enjoying pulses of pressure. Dallas’s mobility kept the Peasy defence on its toes while at the other Jordan Lynas and Stevenson combined to set up Michael Daly but his shot from close range was clutched cleanly by McGarrity. This proved to be last of the action for Lynas and he was replaced by Stephen McGladrigan.

aa_a_joe.jpg

Joe Andrew holds off Fraser Chisholm

On 58 minutes McElroy’s cross from the left into a packed penalty box was headed clear by Park who then combined with Marlow to switch the ball to Craig Menzies on the right to start a Glenafton counter-attack which ended with McGuffie winning a corner, which came to nothing.

Dallas never gave up the ghost to chase down a ball to the dead-ball line and loft it high into the box only for Hughes to leap and catch as Andrew and McGuffie closed in. McGarrity matched his counterpart with a good leap to gather the ball from the head of Daly. The keeper launched the ball upfield and after the bounce deceived centre back Fraser Chisholm the alert Dallas met it first time at the edge of the box to lash it goalward and Hughes did well to push it out for a corner. Although the kick was well defended Peasy, it was only partially cleared and Glens were now very much on the front foot with the visitors pegged back in their own half.

The best effort in this this period came courtesy of McGuffie on 65 minutes with a diagonal shot from outside the box that whizzed past the post. Two minutes later Dallas was clearly struggling and left the field to a great reception by the home support and was replaced by John Paul Boyle.

aa_a_dan01

Dan Orsi

Boyle was soon in the thick of it and after gathering a Marlow throw on the left switched the ball to Orsi on the right who cutely rolled the ball in the box for the incoming Park but his pop at goal skewed wide of target. At the other end former Glenafton player Chris Malone lobbed a neat ball to the back post for Daly only for Menzies to win the aerial battle and McGarrity scoop up the loose ball.

The keeper launched the ball up the park and Andrew with Brough in close attendance headed it back to Orsi who took a touch or two before returning it Andrew, now advanced to the corner of box with his shadow Brough still attached. After hooking the ball to Boyle, lurking in the D, he shook of his shadow before gathering the return pass, that had taken  out three defenders, and squared the ball across the face of goal which although was out of the reach of Orsi was met at the back post by John Paul Boyle to guide home from 3 yards. An excellent move just rewarded to give the Glens the lead on 77 minutes.

aa_a_goal.jpg

John Paul tees up the goal

Tails up the Glens pressed forward and McGuffie slipped the ball into the box for Andrew who guided it into the danger area for Boyle but Malone was well placed to marshal the ball to safety.  Gray then gathered the ball deep In the Peasy half before breaking forward and driving a low shot from 25 yards inches wide of the post. The midfielder then picked up the pieces of another Peasy attack broken down by McChesney and McGeoghegan and drove up the midfield only to be upended by a two footed challenge by Fraser Chisholm. The defender’s pleas that he won the ball, which he did, were not enough to avoid the straight red card for the severity of the challenge.

aa_a_davidgray

Davide Gray with Chessy & Zee

Two minutes later the impressive Bradley clipped a free kick from the left hand corner of the penalty box to the back post for Daly and although McGarrity crouched to get the ball it slipped momentarily from both hands before he got a stronger hand to it, every blue shirt in the vicinity claiming the ball had crossed the line; the red shirts claiming otherwise. To add to the confusion there was a pause in proceedings, however the ball was considered to be still in play.

aa_a_goaloff

Peasy appeal

As play resumed Orsi gave McElroy the slip on the half way, line tight on the touchline, to open up a free run on goal and perhaps frustration clouded McElroy’s decision making as he clearly gave up the chase and from behind swiped the legs from Orsi.  A melee followed and when the dust settled the referee had no option but to send McElroy packing. He then flashed a yellow card to both Menzies and Stevenson – a second yellow for him – and so the red card followed quickly and Petershill were down to 8 men.

aa_a_brian

Brian clutches Daly’s header

When play resumed Petershill were first to test the keeper with Daly’s looping header held by McGarrity. At the other end Park thundered a shot just wide of target and Orsi’s cut back across the face of goal had just a touch too much pace to connect with Boyle or Andrew.

KILBIRNIE LADESIDE 3 (1)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2 (2)

Glenafton made two changes to the starting eleven that faced Arthurlie last week with Cameron Marlow and Dan Orsi replacing Mick McCann and Chris Dallas.

The hosts quickly had the visitors on the back-foot and earned a corner-kick in the opening minute after a determined run down the left by Caolan McAleer, on loan from Airdrie United. Keeper Brian McGarrity with a spring in his step outjumped former Stranraer striker Adam Forde to clutch the ball cleanly at the back post. Two minutes later Craig Menzies cut out a cross-field pass destined for McAleer at the expense of another corner kick which was headed clear by Ryan McChesney. Ladeside continued to probe down both flanks to good effect but the balls into the box failed to find their targets.

Glenafton made some headway through Dan Orsi down the right and although his cross for Joe Andrew on the left was cleared by Stephen McKeown the loose ball was snapped up by David Gray and his long range shot sailed over the bar. On 7 minutes the visitors took the lead with Orsi at the heart of the move again. He gathered a one-two with Andrew before driving down the right to the bye-line where he outwitted Mark Staunton to fire the ball into the danger area and although Ryan Haxton got a touch Cameron Marlow pounced to clip the ball into the net between defender and wrong-footed keeper.

The visitors grew in confidence and began to stroke the ball about in some style. Marlow, John Paul Boyle and Andrew combined to set up the latter for a shot at goal that was deflected wide. The corner kick was headed clear and the ball trapped well by Marlow to set up a lob that looped over the bar.

Back came Kilbirnie and McAleer jinked down the left and turned a couple of defenders before curling a sweet strike from the edge of the box that appeared destined for the top corner only for McGarrity, at full stretch, and at the last minute get his finger tips to the ball to push it on the post. The danger was still real and present as the ball bounced across the face of the empty goal but at a pace too strong to deny the incoming Kieran Brannan the opportunity to poke it home.

aa_a_mcgarritysave01

Brian tips the ball onto the post

The corner kick was cleared and so too the Glens break upfield allowing Ladeside to mount another attack. This concluded with Matty Bennet whipping a ball to the back post which  was grabbed by McGarrity before he was barged by McAlleer and the infringement flagged before Martin Grehan stroked the ball into the net. The keeper then pulled off saves from McAleer and Brannon as they both tried low shots from distance.

On 26 minutes the Glens appeared to have doubled their lead. Boyle twisted and turned to force his way to the bye-line and shirk off Bennet before cutting the ball to the near post where Staunton stumbled over the ball leaving Andrew free to pick up the pieces and squeeze the ball home from the tightest angle. Celebrations curtailed with a reprieve for the Ladeside defender and Andrew penalised.

Joe turns to score but disallowed as Staunton stumbles

Up the park and Forde fizzed a wicked drive from 20 yards forcing McGarrity into vertical take-off and touch the ball over the bar and the short corner kick that followed was cleared. Glens replied with Boyle leaving the sluggish Staunton in his wake to pick out Andrew wide in the left to roll the ball back to Gray who quickly found Marlow and his low angled drive was well held by keeper Kieran Hughes. Marlow then broke down a Kilbirnie attack before setting Boyle off through the middle to shake Staunton off again only to be tripped by Haxton. Dead centre and 25 yards from goal up stepped David Gray to curl the ball beyond the wall and leave goalie Hughes rooted to spot and to slowly turn with a supporting hand on knee to confirm that the sound he had heard was the ball crashing into the net to put the visitors two up with 34 minutes gone.

aa_a_goalcelebs2.jpg

David Gray celebrates 2-0

Soon after the keeper had time on his side to gather his wits and foil Andrew’s attempt from 30 yards to catch him off his line.

Bennet broke down a Glens attack on the half way line and released Grehan who made excellent progress through the middle before cracking a decent shot that McGarrity blocked before Chris Meikle and Gray combined to clear the loose ball. It was snapped up at the edge of the box by Kyle Rafferty only for his shot to skim inches wide of the post. The home side continued to press and another corner-kick was cleared by the Glens before McGarrity comfortably saved McAleer’s curling free-kick. Ladeside’s pressure paid off three minutes from the break when Forde clipped in a free kick into the six yard box where an unmarked Mark Grehan headed home from close range for his first goal for the club.

aa_a_goal03.jpg

An enjoyable and competitive first half drew to a close with no further goals with the visitors just shading it.

H/T Kilbirnie 1 Glens 2

The new half was less than a minute old when McChesney’s hand-ball in the box was adjudged deliberate and Kierann Brannan converted the spot kick to level the scores. A few minutes later McGarrity clawed the ball from the head of Forde as Ladeside tried to finish off a free-kick floated into the box.

aa_a_goal04.jpg

Kierann Brannan slots home to make it 2-2

Glens pushed forward and a Menzies throw in was gathered by Andrew to take a turn in the box and roll the ball back to Ally Park to thunder an angled shot wide of the far post. Marlow then chased down a ball into the box only for the back-tracking Bennet to win the race and blast the ball wide of his own post. Park’s near post header from the resulting corner-kick flashed wide of target. Park then was inches away from guiding home Gray’s deflected free-kick .

On 55 minutes  matters took a dramatic twist when Gray earned a second yellow card for an innocuous challenge. Two minutes later Alan Cairns spoke out of turn to the referee and in the same interaction received a second yellow and was sent packing with his back to the official and the visitors faced the next half-hour with 9 men.

The hosts went for the kill and McGarrity held McAlleer’s free kick before McKeown and Anderson each fashioned shots at goal, the former going wide and the latter over the bar. On 65 minutes the Glens reshuffled the diminished pack with Boyle and Orsi making way for Mick McCann and Chris Dallas, the latter soon in the thick of the action weaving his way upfield before ta timely tackled by the hard-working Anderson.

Although the nine men were giving a good account themselves there were concerns their numbers could be depleted further as yellow cards continued to be flashed and yet similar misdemeanours committed by their opponents went unpunished.

Dallas drove down the left and picked out Marlow to whip the ball into the box and McCann was denied a hook shot at goal with a perfectly timed tackled by Bennet.

Meanwhile the 11 men continued to huff and puff up front as the Glens rearguard stood firm forcing  the hosts to shoot from distance, McGarrity dealing comfortably with substitute Darren Miller’s low trundler from 25 yards out. His counterpart Hughes then cleanly held a Park free-kick from outside the box.

On 78 minutes Menzies mopped up a Ladeside attack and curled a cracking ball down the right for Dallas to explode out the blocks, tear down the wing and whip the ball into box only for Andrew’s header to be deflected wide.

aa_a_dallas

Chris crosses for Joe

The corner kick was quickly cleared and the break capitalised in the gaps in the visitors defence with Grehan feeding McAleer in acres of space down the right but his angled shot lacked the power to trouble McGarrity.

Kilbirnie piled on the pressure and it was all hands to the pumps in the Glens box. Dallas’s outstretched leg nicked the ball from the toe of Miller and then McCann headed clear a dangerrous cross into the box. Bennett took matters into his own hand and weaved his way past a clutch of defenders into the box before a timely tackle from Park prevented a shot at goal.  On 85 minutes the home side earned another penalty after McChesney’s tackle sent McAleer tumbling in the box and Darren Miller buried the spot kick in style.

aa_a_goal05.jpg

The nine men battled on and deep into added time Meikle threw caution to the wind and forced his way through the middle only to be hauled down by Anderson.  The free-kick was eventually cleared at the expense of a corner-kick from which McCann’s header pulled off a decent save from Hughes leaving Park and Meikle to tussle for the loose ball with two defenders and the grounded keeper but to no avail; the ball went wide and the referee’s whistle blew.

Glenafton made three changes to the side that started against Lugar with Alan Cairns, David Gray, Joe Andrew coming in for Craig Potter, Darren McGill and Cammy Marlow

Although the home side made a lively start converting the chances on show was proving more difficult. The visitors weathered the early pressure and on 26 minutes took the lead after Chris Mackie’s headed was guided home by Gary Carroll .

H/T Glens 0 Arthurlie 1

Glens looked to have a created an opening for an equaliser with the assistant flagged a hand-ball in the Arthurlie box only for the referee to overrule and wave play on. To rub salt in the wound the visitors broke upfield and Chris Mackie finished off in some style thrashing the ball past keeper Brian McGarrity.

Glenafton Player: Ally ParkThe Barrhead side were well in control and seemed content with their lead only for Glens to pull one back ten minutes from time after a cross into the box was headed into his own net by Scott Gair.

The tempo increased as the hosts pressed for a leveller only for the hopes to be dealt a blow with the dismissal of substitute Darren McGill’s reaction to Rhys Devlin’s foul. The ten-men redoubled their efforts and won another free-kick in the dying minutes and although a shot at goal was blocked Ally Park (left) was on hand to thunder home a deserved equaliser.

Although chances were thin on the ground in the opening 45 minutes the visitors took a deserved lead midway through the half based on their domination of possession at that time. Jamie Hilton pounced on some loose play and picked his way through the home rearguard before rounding keeper Brian McGarrity to slot the ball home and out the Jaggy Bunnets ahead.

The visitors looked certain to preserve their lead until the break before a touch of class from Cameron Marlow on 44 minutes squared the tie. The midfielder gathered the ball in space and curled a beauty in the postage stamp for his first goal since returning to Loch Park on a loan deal from Queen’s Park.

H/T Glens 1 Lugar 1

The visitors responded well to that late blow and began the second half in determined fashion however the tide quickly changed as the Glens found their shooting boots. A fine passage of passing play ended with Mick McCann collecting the ball to smash an unstoppable shot past the helpless keeper Avici to put the home side ahead om 53 minutes and claim his 10th goal of the season. Two minutes later McCann turned provider to set up penalty box predator John Paul Boyle to double the Glens lead and bag his 10th goal of the season.

Before kick-off both sides and supporters observed a minute’s silence in memory of life-long Glenafton fan Jack Harris who sadly passed away and will be sorely missed at Loch Park.

aa_DSC_4232.jpg

The Glens made three changes to the side that started against Troon a fortnight with Cameron Marlow, Craig McGuffie and Mick McCann taking the places of Craig Menzies, Darren McGill and John Paul Boyle.

On a glorious spring day is was sunshine on Beith with 4 minutes gone. Richie Burke’s angled shot from deep in the box was deflected wide for a corner-kick which was taken by the same player to be met at the near post by the head of Nicky Docherty and despite the hosts’ attempts to clear the ball off the line the referee eventually signalled a score after confirmation from his assistant.

aa_goal01.jpg

Nicky Docherty arms aloft celebrates his opening goal

The visitors were forced into an early change after John Sheridan sustained a knee injury and was replaced by Zander Ryan. Following a minor reshuffle Beith were back on the front foot and Paul Frize picked out Burke in the box only for the outrushing keeper Brian McGarrity and the outstretched leg of Ryan McChesney blocking a certain second. At times it seemed there were two McChesney’s on the park as he had to hunt down waves of quick breaks by the visitors.

At the other end Joe Andrew fashioned a half chance as he turned make-shift centre back Ross Fisher at the edge of the box before striking a low angled drive that was well held by keeper Stephen Grindlay. On 17 minutes Glens threatened again when McGuffie’s cross was headed by Marlow at the far corner of the six yard box across the face of goal only for McCann’s attempted header to drift wide. A minute later David Gray saw off a challenge from Docherty to force the ball into the box where McCann beat Fisher to the ball before pulling off a fine block from Grindlay.

aa_a_mickmccann.jpg

Mick McCann and Josh McArthur

The Mighty responded through David McGowan who despite being surrounded by four red shirts managed to engineer a low shot at goal from a tight angle that beat McGarrity but the ball slipped beyond the far post. McGowan then turned provider following another quick break that stretched the Glens defence and the ball played to Darren Christie with time and space in the box but uncharacteristically his shot failed to test the keeper. However, soon after on 26 minutes Beith doubled their advantage. Ryan mopped up a Glens attack and his clearance was gathered by Christie deep in his own half before he shook off the attention of Gray and sidestepped the tackle of Jamie Hay to burst through the open space to the edge of the box and with his way to goal now blocked by two defenders he slid the ball to McGowan who quickly returned it to Christie to guide a cracking shot into the back of the net from 20 yards out.

aa_a_darrenchristie.jpg

Darren Christie laps it up

Marlow made good progress down the left before firing in a decent cross that saw Grindlay leap to clutch ball cleanly as McCann threatened. The visitors broke upfield again and after twisting and turning at the corner of the penalty box Burke curled a shot that seen late by McGarrity and the ball pushed wide with two strong hands. The keeper then got a strong fist to the ensuing corner-kick to punch the ball clear from the ‘two heads are better than one’ of Andy Reid and Docherty at the back post.

aa_goal03.jpg

Text book header from Mick McCann

On 39 minutes the Glens earned a corner-kick after Grindlay punched clear a free kick clipped into a crowded box. McGuffie floated a peach of a ball to the back post where Mick McCann timed his jump to perfection and bulleted his header home – text book execution.

Two minutes later Andrew fired in a wicked cross from the right only for Grindlay to pull off another fine save as McGuffie and McCann waited to pounce. The visitors ended the half with back to back corner kicks that were defended stoutly by the home guard.

H/T Glens 1 Beith 2

The home side were first to threaten after the break through a snapshot from McCann that whizzed past the post. At the other end Christie’s blistering run down the right ended with a wicked ball across the face of the goal that Reid was studs away from guiding it home. Play was raging from end to end and on 52 minutes Andrew and McCann combined at the edge of the box and claims that their progress was denied by Fisher’s hand ball were waved away.

The visitors broke upfield and the ball eventually fell for Docherty in the box but under pressure from Chris Meikle he rushed his shot and the ball sailed high over the bar. McGuffie replied with a shot from distance that zoomed wide of the post. On 57 minutes Andrew’s foxed Fisher in the box before squaring the ball for the inrushing Marlow who shrugged off tackle from Josh McArthur before shooting from 8 yards out only for the advancing Grindlay to save in some style.

aa_a_cammy.jpg

Cammy shoots for goal

Both sides made a brace of substitutions with Beith bringing on Tom Collins and Jamie Wilson for Tommy Martin and David McGowan and Glens replacing Jamie Hay and Chris McGuffie with Chris Dallas and John Paul Boyle.

With 10 minutes to go Reid broke down the right before cutting the ball back for Burke to dink the ball with the outside of his foot and with the ball destined for the keeper’s top left corner McGarrity launch himself at full stretch to push the ball away with his left hand – a save of the highest quality that kept the Glens in the game.

That status remained until five minutes from time after Reid time his run to perfection and spring the offside trap to gather Christie’s through ball and continue unimpeded deep into the Glens box before lashing an unstoppable shot beyond McGarrity.

Andy Reid seals the points

Glenafton came close to clutching a life-line a minute later only for McChesney’s looping header from a corner-kick to skim the far post and the chance like the points were gone.

Mr Jack Harris

The club were saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong Glenafton Athletic supporter Jack Harris . Former club president Alex Jess, once a neighbour of Jack’s at Farden Avenue, described him as “an out and out Glens man that hardly missed a game , home or away”. Jack liked to stand up beyond the away dug-out and before every game Alex would ask him “will we win today Jack” and the reply was always “of course Alex” . He moved to Cumnock a few years ago but never missed the chance to let people know his footballing allegiances still lay at New Cumnock !

The thoughts of all at Glenafton Athletic are with to Jack’s wife Peggy, son John, daughter Kay, family members and friends at this sad time. There will be a minute’s silence before kick-off at Saturday’s home against Beith Juniors in memory of Jack .

Jack’s funeral will take place at Ayr Crematorium on Ftiday 18th March at 3:30pm.

Glenafton 1 Troon 1

McBoookie.com West of Scotland League Super League Premier Division : Match 12

Saturday 5th March 2016, Loch Park, New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETC 1 (0)

TROON 1 (1)

Prior to kick-off club captain Craig Menzies posed with mascot Sonny Coughtrie wearing the new Fun Fours strip sponsored by Afton Homes. Joining them was Hughie Holland who played for the Glens in the 1970s and was visiting with match day sponsors Catrine Whisky Bond. Hughie thoroughly enjoyed his visit and said it brought back many happy memories. A big thanks to Zee, who went on to win the Sponsors award on the day.

Glenafton made two changes to the side that started against Benburb last week with John Paul Boyle and Darren McGill coming in for Mick McCann and Craig McGuffie. On the bench was midweek signing Cameron Marlow, making a return to the club on a loan deal from Queen’s Park until the end of the season. Starting for Troon were former Glenafton players Ally Semple and Martin Ure.

Troon came flying out the traps and the home side found themselves on the back foot for much of the half facing waves of attacks. The visitors opened the scoring on 3 minutes after Dale Moore darted down the right and although his route to goal was blocked he earned his side a throw-in which was collected on the bye-line by Adam Forsyth. The Troon hit-man shook off a couple of defenders as he progressed along the line before firing for goal and although keeper Brian McGarrity got a hand to the ball the alert Forsyth pounced and drilled the loose ball through a ruck of legs and into the net.

Three minutes later Forsyth came within a whisker of doubling the lead. Good build up play down the left set up Colin Spence to stroke a measured pass into the box which was cutely dummied by Forsyth for Moore to gather and turn a defender before clipping the ball into the danger area only for Forsyth’s header to fly inches wide of the near post. No respite for the Red shirts and after gifting possession upfield the lively Scott Chatham lifted a lethal ball over the home defence for the menacing Moore to trap with one foot and then attempt to lob the outrushing McGarrity with the other, only for the ball to drop over the bar.

On 13 minutes Glenafton won a corner-kick courtesy of Ure after he shanked a cross-field pass that had the ball heading for Royal Troon! Ryan McChesney’s header was partially cleared and the big defender was robbed of the ball by Forsyth who then also saw of the challenge of McGill before exploding upfield and picking out Craig Harvey wide on the right to cut back the ball into the box and there was the back chasing McChesney to mop up the danger.

The visitors continued to dictate play and the alert Forsyth chased down an under-hit back pass only for McGarrity to win that race and his clearance cannon off the shins of the striker and the ball spin harmlessly wide. Midway through the half the keeper foiled Forsyth following another excellent passage of play by the Portland Parkers which concluded with a quality through ball to Moore to deftly dink over the Glens defence for Forsyth to collect and tee up a shot before McGarrity bravely dived at his feet to smother the ball. A minute later another fine move culminated in Jordan Muir floating the ball to Moore at the corner of the box to head back for Spence to meet sweetly on the volley and send the ball whizzing over the bar.

The home side continued to toil with only glimpses of half-chances on show. Jamie Hay gathered the ball in the centre circle and his ball through the middle was touched on by Andrew for Ally Park to  slip into box for Boyle to chase but Semple had a head start and gathered safely. Semple came out on top in a similar race with Boyle before the break only on this occasion he had to kick the ball clear. H/T Glens 0 Troon 1

The half-time oranges added a much needed zest to the Glens play and within two minutes of the restart they equalised with a peach of a goal. McGarrity launched a free kick from the outside of his box to the edge of his opponents’ box where Andrew got the jump on his shadow Chris McKnight to knock the ball into the box where John Paul Boyle with his back to goal gave Gavin Collins the slip and let the ball bounce a couple of times before lashing a net-bulger beyond the reach of Semple.

The goal set the scene for the Glens to lift the tempo of their play and press forward while the visitors crisp passing moves were less of a feature of their play. Hay tried his luck from distance only for his low drilled free kick to take a deflection and Troon clear the corner-kick that followed. Craig Menzies lofted the ball from half-way and Andrew triumphed in the aerial battle with Collins to head the ball back into the path of Ally Park to curl a shot for goal that was well held by Semple. The keeper was then head and shoulders above both attackers and fellow defenders to clutch a wicked ball into the box by Alan Cairns.

Ally Park takes on Troon

On 57 minutes Semple pulled of his save of the match. Cairns broke down a Troon attack deep in his own half and quickly found McGill tight on the left flank. The midfielder carried the ball for a few strides before launching it up-field where Andrew outpaced Dale Keenan and McKnight before he trapped it with his right and in a flash fired with his left only for Semple to push the ball away with both hands and McKnight clear up the rebound.

Moore fashioned a chance for Troon on the hour mark when he picked out Chatham in the box who showed great determination to force his way past a clutch of defenders on his run across the face of goal only to scoop his shot over the bar. Back came the Glens and Park pounced on a slack defensive header by Collins before powering to the edge of the box and drilling a low fierce shot that beat Semple and slipped inches wide of the post.

More chances were now coming the way of the visitors. Midway through the half substitute Peter McGill snapped up a misplaced pass at the edge of the Glens’ box only to be brought down by Hay and although McKnight’s curled the free-kick round the wall McGarrity gathered comfortably.

On 74 minutes the injured Hay was replaced by Craig McGuffie and his jinking runs were soon giving Troon a new threat to consider. Five minutes later he picked up a square ball in the middle of the park from Andrew and pushed forward before thundering a shot from 25 yards out that boomed off McKnight and out for corner kick. Glens used the break swap the front pairing of Andrew and Boyle for Chris Dallas and Mick McCann before Meikle’s header from the corner was deflected wide by a fellow red shirt.

Craig McGuffies skips past Dale Keenan

The visitors brought on Dean Keenan for Chatham to shore things up at the back while no doubt hoping for an opportunity to exploit his notable dead-ball skills. With 5 minutes to go McGuffie slide-ruled a ball into the box for Dallas to chase and round the keeper only for the offside flag to bring the move to an end, much to the relief of Keenan who appeared to have played the Glens man onside. At the other end McKnight played a clever one-two with Forsyth at the edge of box and with McChesney closing down, he instantly shot for goal but McGarrity was his match.

A Glens’ corner won by McCann was scrambled clear of the box before Menzies took matters into his own hands and slalomed his way back into the box only for Ure to time his last ditch tackle to perfection. Further half chances came and went at either end before the whistle blew without the deadlock being broken. FT Glens 1 Troon 1
