Striker Mick McCann was still unavailable for selection and with midfielder Chris Malone placed on the transfer list the Glens made a number of changes to the starting eleven that faced Jeanfield Swifts last week. Chris Meikle, Daniel Orsi , Craig McGuffie and Michael Wardrope replaced Craig Menzies, Ryan McChesney , Chris Malone and John Paul Boyle.

The home side threatened early coming close a couple of times before Glen countered through Craig McGuffie with a trademark run before whipping a dangerous cross into the box which was cut out well by keeper Zander Cowie. Arthurlie took the lead on 15 minutes after a Connor McGlinchey free kick into the box eventually fell for Steven Tart who fired home. Keeper Brian McGarrity prevented the hosts from doubling their lead after pulling off a fine save from Gary Smith.

The visitors enjoyed a good spell and a powerful run by top scorer Darren McGill set up a chance for Dan Orsi only for Cowie to foil him with an outstanding save. Another fine run by McGill ended with Gary Carroll pulling back the Glens midfielder at the expense of a free kick, but McGill paid the price after a swinging arm caught his assailant, and an early bath the outcome. Striker Chris Dallas came within a whisker of doubling ‘Lie’s advantage just before the break after his effort beat McGarrity but skimmed past the post.

Ten minutes into the second half and the ten men of Glenafton turned the tables to take the lead. On 52 minutes Cowie got down low to block a shot but could do little to prevent the alert Michael Wardrope from pouncing and slamming home the equaliser.

Two minutes later and former Arthurlie player Joe Andrew fired the Glens in front in spectacular fashion lashing the ball home from 30 yards out.

With 15 minutes to go it was 10-a-side after Gavin Rushford earned a second yellow card for his reaction to a robust tackle. Glenafton enjoyed some decent possession and looked the likelier to add to their lead with a Chris Meikle effort the pick of the chances. The home side nearly sneaked a shared of the points in the closing seconds after a goalmouth scramble before McGarrity claimed the loose ball.

Glens Scottish run brought to a Swift Holt

Under darkening skies and the threat of heavy rain Glenafton Athletic and their opponents Jeanfield Swifts along with the match officials line up together in unity before kick-off to Show Racism the Red Card.

The sides had met on two previous occasions in the Scottish Junior Cup with honours even, the Swifts winning 6-1 at Perth (1969/170) and Glens replying with a 3-0 win at New Cumnock (2001/02).

Glenafton made two changes to the starting eleven that lost at home to Pollok in the league last Saturday with Joe Andrew coming in for the unavailable Mick McCann and John Paul Boyle replacing Chris McGuffie.

The visitors kicked off but quickly surrendered possession and Chris Malone’s head flick was gathered by Joe Andrew at the edge of box before a cute touch released Jamie McGeoghegan on the left to whip a ball across the face of goal which although keeper Mark Mitchell spilled the attentive Sean Fleming made a last ditch tackle to prevent John Paul Boyle from burying the loose ball. Two minutes later Swifts striker Chris McLeish tried his luck from 20 yards out but the accuracy of shot didn’t much its power and the ball zoomed well wide of the mark.

On 11 minutes the hosts took the lead and in some style. Jamie Hay robbed Swifts of posssession and picked out Boyle on the half way line who skipped past two defenders and with options on his right and left, chose Andrew on the left he quickly rolled back across the 18 yard line to McGeoghegan who slipped a perfectly timed pass for the overlapping Ally Park who slammed the ball past the advancing keeper and into the net.

Glens spurned a chance to add to their two minutes later after Andrew and Boyle caused panic in a busy Swifts box without either able to get a clean shot at goal and eventually Andrew’s second attempt held by Mitchell.

After a shaky start Jeanfield settled well and began to see much more of the ball and looked lively on the break particularly through Kevyn Fowler and Lee Baker. Indeed it was after a Fowler run had been ended by a tackle from Ryan McChesney, earning the Glens defender a yellow card, that Swifts drew level on 23 minutes. Free-kick specialist Anthony Holt from 22 yards out lashed the ball beyond the Glens’ wall and the outstretched arms of McGarrity into the far corner of the net for his 10th goal of the season.

With their tails up Swifts pushed for a second and Daniel Kelly curled a shot from the edge of the box that beat the keeper but slipped wide of the post. The home side had then McGarrity to thank for keeping his nerve as Baker broke into the box and the keeper pushed him wide of goal before blocking a shot with a foot and then repeated the feat as Baker tried from a tighter angle, the ball then sailing high over the bar.

With 10 minutes to go Andrew made good progress into the box to reach the dead-ball line with Fleming in close attention. The Swifts’ defender lost his footing ,slipped out of play and then appeared to pull back Andrew’s leg as he tried to recover the loose ball, only for his penalty claim to be dismissed. A minute later the Glens’ striker burst into the box again to play a one-two with Boyle before Chris Anton and Mitchell combined to block his effort. Darren McGill then slipped the ball to Jamie Hay and his thundering shot from 22 yards sailed high and wide of target.

At the other end Chris Dodd tried his luck from a similar distance with the ball being held well by McGarrity, but the keeper was soon back in action after a Glens’ corner had been cleared leaving Kelly, the ball carrier, and McLeish to swiftly break upfield. On reaching the box Kelly took solitary defender Craig Menzies out of play by slipping the ball to McLeish only for his low drilled shot to be blocked by MGarrity’s right foot on the six yard line.

H/T Glens 1 Swifts 1

The hosts kicked off and again they made a bright start and forced a couple of corner-kicks the second of which ended with Park towering above Fleming to bullet a header into the six yard box which was eventually cleared with the keeper stranded on the ground. A third corner-kick followed soon after, this too cleared by a determined defence.

On 51 minutes Jeanfield earned their first corner-kick of the second half and although this was partially cleared the ball was quickly recovered and returned to Dodd on the left flank who clipped it to the near post where Holt, with his back to goal, took a touch before hooking the ball to the back post only for McGarrity at full stretch to claw the ball away from the line but could do nothing to stop the alert Chris McLeish from lashing it home from close range.

Play became bogged down for some time with further chances thin on the ground. With half an hour to go Malone and McGill exchanged heated words and were immediately replaced with Craig McGuffie and midweek signing Michael Wardrope. While Swifts also made a change.

Glens pressed for the equaliser and replaced Boyle with Daniel Orsi but struggled to unpick a well drilled defence while always wary of being caught on the break. Park won another header in a packed box but the ball slipped wide of the post.

Ally Park wins another header

Mitchell then pushed an angled shot from Andrew wide for a corner kick which led to another, which was then cleared. On 77 minutes Swifts won a free kick on the outskirts of the box and as Holt stepped up a travelling supporter warned ‘he usually gets two a game!” – on this occasion the wall and keeper were indeed beaten but the ball crashed off the post.

Back came the Glens through Park, who with his progress deeper into the box blocked squared the ball for McGuffie only for his shot from 18 yards to go well wide. Orsi then shook off Anton before bursting into the box only to be bundled to the ground by player-manager Ross Gunnion, his appeals for a penalty quickly dismissed. A Glens’ free-kick into the box was eventually gathered by Mitchell before Orsi’s angled-drived whizzed wide of the far post.

Anthony Holt makes it 3-1

Anthony Holt makes it 3-1

The last word belonged to Anthony Holt. In the 5th minute of added time after a long kick-out by the keeper was headed on Holt kept his cool and with a perfect weight lobbed the ball high over the head of the outrushing McGarrity and in the fading light he knew before anyone else in the ground where the ball would finish … back of the net…. in what was the last kick of the game. POLLOK  4 (2)

Glenafton made two changes to the starting 11 that faced Larkhall Thistle in the West of Scotland Cup last Saturday with Daniel Orsi and Joe Andrew making way for Jamie Hay and Chris McGuffie. Like last week the home side found themselves 2-0 down before the midway point of the first half, however there was to be reversal, despite a determined effort.

Pollok took the lead in 8 minutes after catching the Glens cold with a quickly taken free-kick was rolled to former Cumnock midfielder Colin Williamson who had time to take a touch before lashing a left footer from 25 yards out into the net through a busy box and deceiving keeper Brian McGarrity.

The visitors continued to press and double their lead on 22 minutes while the hosts had yet to test their opponents keeper. A last ditch tackle by Jamie Hay brought an excellent run by Steven Higgins. The same player acted quickly to take a short corner to John Sweeney who clipped the ball into the six yard box for the inrushing Chris Walker to bullet home a header.

Play moved into a phase were possession was much more even and the home side came close when Chris Malone’s cross was met by Mick McCann and his glancing header flashed inches wife of the post. Robbie Winters header at the other end suffered the same fate.

Darren McGill

Darren McGill

Six minutes before the break the home side pulled on back after Jamie McGeoghegan switched play from tight on the right flank to the left hand corner of the penalty box where Darren McGill met Malone’s flick-on to drill a low angled dive into the far corner beyond keeper Jordan Longmuir at full stretch. McCann came within a whisker of levelling the match after he beat Walker to the jump to meet Hay’s free kick only for his header to beat the keeper and crash of the post. H/T Glens 1 Pollok 2

The second half continued in the same vein that the first had finished with both sides creating a similar number of chances, albeit more from set pieces than open play, the game now in the ‘next goal is crucial ‘phase. The visitors came when although Williamson’s free kick whipped into the six yard missed its targets of Paul Gallacher and Walker the ball crashed off the bar. At the other end Chris McGuffie’s shot from distance toasted Longmuir’s fingers of both hands.

Joe Andrew

Joe Andrew

In 76 minutes Pollok restored their two goal cushion when Walker’s downward header from a corner kick seemed destined to land in the hands of McGarrity only for David Winters to get the slightest of touches to diverT the ball into the net. Two minutes later back came the Glens through some excellent build up play with Hay picking out substitute Dan Orsi who quickly released Ally Park down the right on the overlap and his cross into the box was met at the near post by substitute Joe Andrew to deftly guide the ball home. Longmuir then pulled off a fine save from Andrew as he finished off another fine passing move.

With a minute remaining Pollok cleared a Glens corner and broke upfield and Tom Hanlon picked out Robbie Winters in the box, who took a touch before finishing in some style from 16 yards.

Show Racism the Red Card Scotland

SHOWRACISMREDCARD

Fortnight of Action 2015 – Scotland: Website Article

Welcome to Show Racism the Red Card’s annual Fortnight of Action. The 2015 Fortnight of Action will unite Scottish football in making a stand against racism. We believe that it is vital to highlight the anti-racism message at this time, in conjunction with Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE).

Scottish Junior FA clubs will make a stand against racism over one weekend whether at home or away. We have coordinated the participation of the clubs’ actions to make it the biggest and most high profile fortnight so far.

At SJFA matches, clubs will be united in calling for an end to racism in football and in society. Players in over 40 European countries are involved in similar events as part of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network against racism and discrimination.

Show Racism the Red Card has received excellent support from football clubs, football authorities and football fans over the length and breadth of Scotland – we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all. We have heard of many instances where supporters have been proactive in promoting the anti-racism message, making it clear that racism and discrimination are not welcome at their club. We urge fans to continue to support the anti-racism message; it is the responsibility of us all to ensure that it is carried beyond the Fortnight of Action and beyond the terraces.

“The SJFA acknowledge that racism is a form of oppression. We aim to support and embrace diversity and difference through zero tolerance to racism and discrimination of any kind, education of our young and our actions both on and off the park.” Tom Johnstone Scottish Junior FA.

The SRtRC campaign will continue to speak to all football clubs, the football authorities and the police to eradicate all forms of racist behaviour.

The SJFA and its clubs deplore all forms of racism and any racist behaviour will not be tolerated within SJFA.

This year the campaign has continued to develop partnerships with local authorities to deliver educational workshops combined with football coaching sessions in a number of regions. The workshops are delivered by a dedicated team of education workers and ex-professional footballers. They are a very positive method of
educating our young people about the negative impact racism has on Scottish society.

Here’s a brief outline of what’s taking place during the Fortnight of Action this year:

  • Anti-racism football festivals and projects across Scotland.
  • Show Racism the Red Card actions at SPFL, Scottish Women’s Premier League, Scottish Women’s Football League, Scottish Junior Football matches.
  • ‘Unite Against Racism’ actions at UEFA Champions League fixtures.
  • Educational workshops in schools and community groups across Scotland.

Football is a sport that is followed by people across the world, and football matches should be an enjoyable experience for all, whatever their background. We all have a part to play in stamping out racism in football and society.

If you see or hear racism or sectarianism at any level of football, please report it to the stewards or police.

Our website also includes updates on Fortnight of Action events and more information on the Show Racism the Red Card campaign in Scotland.

Saturday 10th October, Loch Park , New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 3 (0)

LARKHALL THISTLE 2 (2)

Glenafton fought back from two down at the break to defeat Larkhall Thistle 3-2 in the West of Scotland Cup 1st round match at Loch Park as the visitors finished with 9 men.

The Glens created a couple of chances in the opening encounters both of which created decent saves from keeper Alan Colquhoun the first a Chris Malone shot from the edge of the box and the second a close range glancing header from Mick McCann.

However the visitors looked lively with the forward play of Graham Gracie in particular catching the eye and on 12 minutes took the lead after Ryan Innes capitalised on a defensive lapse to gather a ball from Gary McStay and slot the ball home from close range.

The visitors doubled their lead on 20 minutes after Scott Nicol and Gracie combined in the box to set up Gary McStay and the former Shotts midfielder duly obliged with a sweetly struck shot that gave keeper Brian McGarrity no chance.

Gary McStay doubles Thistle's lead

Thistle continued to press and three minutes later McGarrity got a strong hand to a cross from the left by Gracie and pressure from Craig Menzies prevented from McStay making more of the chance to bury the loose ball.

Although the home side struggled to sustain any fluency in their play the occasional half chance was still being fashioned. On 32 minutes Joe Andrew’s through ball into the box saw McCann give defender Niall Reynolds the slip before angling a shot from the corner of the six yard box only for the keeper to be well placed to gather the shot safely.

The visitors quickly broke upfield and after a powerful run down the left Gracie forced his way into the box only for his shot to be deflected over the bar by Ally Park and the Glens mop up the resultant corner-kick.

Gleafton enjoyed their best spell of pressure in the closing 10 minutes of the half and on 38 minutes a free kick from 25 yards cannoned off the Larkie wall and the loose ball snapped up by McCann to drive into the box only for Colquhoun to pull off a great save as the stiker tried to curl his shot beyond the diving keeping into the corner of the net.

H/T Glens 0 Larkhall 2

Glenafton replaced Dan Orsi and Joe Andrew with Chris Meikle and Craig McGuffie and within a minute of the restart had halved the deficit.

Park stormed down the right flank and shook off the attention of Paul Burns and although his cut back from the goal-line was blocked by Neil Schoneville he quickly recovered the ball and rolled it back to Craig McGuffie at the corner of the 18 yard box to take a touch before curling a cute shot into the far corner with keeper Colquhoun rooted to the spot.

Craig McGuffie halves the deficit

Craig McGuffie halves the deficit

To add salt to their wounds, during their next attack, Larkhall half-hearted appeals for a spot kick were waved away. On 50 minutes Park’s tackle in the middle of the park sparked a melee and when the bodies had been separated defender Schoneville received his marching orders and Burns booked for his protests; the latter replaced by Mark McKeever soon after.

The home side’s tails were up and Thistle conceded a couple of free kicks on the outskirts of the box, neither of which tested the keeper. Malone then slipped a fine pass to McGuffie who twisted and turned in the box and on this occasion his curled shot lacked the power and height to beat Colquhoun.

On 65 minutes Glenafton drew level from a well-executed corner-kick that saw Ryan McChesney win the aerial battle to head the ball back to the edge of the six yard box where Ally Park soared head and shoulders above two defenders to loop his header in at back post as Colquhoun clambered to get a hand to the ball.

Two minutes later McGuffie shrugged off one defender before bursting into the box and with another defender tracking his movement he picked his moment to slip the ball to Darren McGill who drilled a low angled drive beyond the keeper from 8 yards out.

Darren McGills puts the Glens ahead

Glens continued to push forward and another powerful run down the right by Park ended with his cut back clear by Reynolds as McCan waited to pounce and Thistle cleared the corner-kick that followed. The visitors replaced McStay with Andy Brown and with 15 minutes to go were reduced to 9 men after the luckless Gracie earned a second yellow card.

The hosts created several more chances including a lob from McGuffie that beat Colquhoun but dropped over the bar and a shot from McCann that also beat the keeper but hit the post.

In the last minute of regulation time the keeper joined his team-mates for a corner-kick and as the Glens defence scrambled the ball clear it fell to Jordan Marshall only for his shot to be blocked in the box by Meikle initiating cries for hand ball. While theses appeals were waved away Glens broke upfield and McGill’s attempt to find the empty net from some distance out sailed over the bar.

Glenafton earned another couple of corner kicks that came to nothing while Colquhoun went upfield for a long throw-in which also came to nothing and the final whistle saving him the spring back to his own goal.

A minute’s silence was held prior to kick-off in memory of former Glenafton player Jim Doherty who passed away recently. Jim played in the Cumnock Juniors side that won the the Scottish Junior Cup in 1978/79 and signed for Notts County the following season. He later returned to Scotland and was captain for the Glens for a time.

Glenafton were delighted to welcome Newmachar United from the North First Division (East) for the Scottish Junior Cup 1st round tie in what was the first meeting between the two sides. The home side made several changes to the starting eleven that faced Hurlford United a fortnight ago.  In came Craig McGuffie, Jamie Hay, John Adam and John Paul Boyle for Ally Park, Alan Cairns, Chris Malone and Joe Andrew.

Four goals in a five minute spell for Glenafton effectively killed off thi s Scottish Junior Cup 1st round tie with just over quarter of an hour gone. Dan Orsi started the ball rolling getting down on the six yard line to head home a corner kick on 11 munutes.

DARREN’S DAZZLER CAPS GLENS COMEBACK TO SINK ‘FORD

Glenafton twice levelled through goals from Mick McCann and Daniel Orsi before Darren McGill’s thunderbolt completed the comeback to secure the points and seal the home side’s first league win of the season.

Glenafton made two changes to the side that started last week in the draw at Peterhsill. In came Ally Park (returning from injury) and Darren MGill while Craig McGuffie and Craig Potter were on the bench. Visitors Hurlford, included former Glenfaton defender Richie McKillen, a summer signing from Linlithgow Rose.

Glens in a 4-4-2 formation, with Mick McCann and Joe Andrew leading the line, looked lively from the start however it was Hurlford that raced to an early lead on 8 minutes. A free kick from the left field was floated into the box where Chris Robertson won the aerial battle at the near post to get the slightest of touch to deflect the ball across the face of goal and in at the back post.

The home side responded well and were enjoying a lot of the ball without however creating any clear cut chances. Indeed it was Hurlford that came close to doubling their lead on 17 minutes after David McClune appearing to line up to loft a free kick into the box but instead opting for a long range shot which was just wide of the junction of the post and bar.
Midway through the half another ‘Ford free-kick caused panic in the box after Martin Brown’s effort blasted off the Glens’ wall and the loose ball was fired back in by Ross Robertson only for this to be blocked by McChesney and as Kean pounced to try and convert this rebound in slid Park to send the ball across the face of goal to the back where Paul McKenzie’s effort was also blocked. United continued to press and a corner kick was only partially cleared before keeper Brian McGarrity and Craig Menzies combined on the line to deny Kean heading home from close range.

Back came Glens and McCann released Andrew for a diagonal run into the box with McKillen in pursuit, a cute flick took out the defender and found McGill who quickly gave Robertson the slip before squaring the ball for Dan Orsi in the box, but the ball didn’t fall kindly and the chance was gone. Hurlford replied with a long range effort from open play only for the alert M cGarrity to push McClune’s shot over the bar.

The home side finished the closing ten minutes of the half strongly. Orsi from wide on the right picked out Chris Malone in space at the back post who cut the ball back for McCann and his first-time shot was blocked by the outstretched leg of Chris Robertson before Alan Cairns’ effort to curl the loose ball home from 20 yards finish wide of target.

Malone then tried a low drilled shot from distance that was well held by Ally Brown. The keeper then beat McCann to the chase for a ball into the box after the Glens striker had left central defenders Roberson and McKillen in his wake. Soon after, McGill at the edge of the box slipped the ball between the same pair to Andrew with his back to goal and as he turned he was caught by Robertson and stumbled to the ground but appeals for a spot kick were forlorn. Brown then did well to clutch the ball from McCann’s head as the half drew to a close. HT Hurlford 1 Glenafton 0

The visitors kicked-off and quickly gave away possession with a careless pass that was intercepted by Andrew who quickly released Mick McCann and off the Glens striker charged forward into the box and as the keeper advanced to his six yard line picked his moment to coolly drill the ball into the net. Game all square on 46 minutes.

Five minutes later Jamie McGeoghegan’s through ball was gathered by Andrew on the edge of the ‘D’ where he turned McKillen before firing for goal and the shot deflected wide off the sole of the defender’s boot. The corner-kick from the left was partially cleared before Park and Orsi combined on the right to send the ball to the back post where Brown leapt to gather as McChesney threatened.

On 54 minutes Hurlford went back in front after McKenzie with no prospect of progressing into the box picked out Kean wide on the right hand side of the box who after a touch fired the ball across the face of goal missing shirts of both colours before arriving at the back post where Ross Robertson was on and to slam home, as home claims for off-side were dismissed.

The home side were soon back on the front foot with Orsi causing problems with his powerful runs down the right while a Cairns free-kick from the left had Brown juggling the ball before getting under control as McCann hoped to pick up the pieces. Glenafton continued to press and yet had to be wary of the less frequent ‘Ford attacks and midway through the half McGarrity did well to get down low and smother a low angled shot from McClune. At the other end Park and Orsi combined well down the right before Orsi pulled off a great save from Brown.

Glenafton brought on midfielder Craig McGuffie for defender Ally Park as they went in search of the equaliser. McGill cut inside from the left to leave Danny Mitchell stranded before Fraser Chisholm took the feet from the Glens midfielder to use up the last of his nine-lives and earn his second yellow card. The keeper made another fine save from the free kick but could do little to stop Dan Orsi bulleting home a header from the corner-kick that followed to level the match again on 75 minutes.

Both sides created decent chances Hurlford through Ross Robertson at one end and Glenafton when Andrew’s touch from a throw in deep into the box edged inches wide of the far post.

On 80 minutes the home side took the lead in spectacular fashion. The industrious McCann won the ball in the middle of the park and rolled it back to Darren McGill in the centre circle in acres of space and with defenders backing forward the midfielder pushed forward before unleashing a thunderous shot from over 30 yards out that escaped the outstretched arms of the keeper and dipped just under the bar before bulging the net.

Hurlford came within a whisker of drawing level within a minute only for Kean’s shot from a tight angle on the right side slipped wide of the far post. Both sides made changes with Darren McGill leaving to loud applause from the home support to be replaced by John Paul Boyle while the visitors brought on Ryan Borris for Paul Byrne and Ryan Donnelly for David McClune.  The home side were well in control and continued to attack down both flanks In the dying seconds Hurlford’s last chance ended with Robertson losing out to McGarrity. PETERSHILL 1(1)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 (0)

Glens made several changes from the side that lost to Rob Roy last week with Jamie Hay and Ally Park out injured and Darren McGill taking a place in the bench in came Craig Potter, Joe Andrew and Daniel Orsi on his return from holiday.

The visitors earned an early free kick which was whipped to the back post where Chris Malone’s attempt to convert was thwarted by keeper Steven McNeil rising high in the air to clutch the ball safely, the Glens midfielder catching a sore one in the process.

Petershill countered and despite a number of opportunities to clear the lines the Glens defence conceded free kick on the outskirts of the box. Keiran McAnespie curled the ball ;past the wall to beat keeper Brian McGarrity at his near post and put the home side ahead after 8 minutes.

Peasy take the lead

Michael Daly made good progress down the right and his tussle to retain the ball in the right hand side of box ended up with it popping up wide on the left where McAnespie’s angled shot slipped wide of target.

On 20 minutes the visitors had the ball in the net. Chris Malone picked out Joe Andrew and having shrugged off a shirt pull Chris Ketterer slipped the ball to Mick McCann who appeared to have the jump on the static Jordon Chisholm on the 18 yard line and run on to slot the ball beyond McNeil, only for the assistant’s flag to deny the score.

Mick McCann's goal disallowed

McGarrity easily mopped up a couple of Peasy cross balls into the box before his counterpart got down low to hold a low shot from Craig McGuffie at the end of another fine run from the young midfielder. The home side looked like doubling their lead on 26 minutes after Jordon Kennedy’s close range shot was initially blocked by Malone and the ball fell kindly for him to blast his second bite at the cherry unimpeded only for McGarrity to pull off a marvellous block and the Glens defence repel the corner kick that followed.

At the other end McGuffie and Malone combined well on the left side of the box before the latter whipped the ball to the back post only for Daniel Orsi’s header to loop over the bar. Soon after Orsi’s ball into the box took a bad bounce off Ketterrer and as Malone picked up the loose ball and prepared to fire he stumbled to the ground after a clash with Tony Stevenson. Penalty claims were waved away and the Glens man booked for his trouble.
Five minutes later the same fate befell Kieran Daw after being robbed of the ball in the ball by Ryan McChesney, his tumble earning him a yellow card.

In the closing minutes of the half Peasy passed up two good chances to add to their lead. Darren McLean with time and space in the box sent his angled shot high and wide beyond McGarrity’s goal and then Daw preferred power to placing from close range and the Glens keeper pulled off another fine block.

Glenafton kicked off and within a minute were back on level terms. Jamie McGeoghegan threaded a super ball for Craig McGuffie to gather, beat the offside trap and make a bee-line for the box with defender Fraser Chisholm struggling to close the gap on his prey. McNeil had little option to charge from his line and although he blocked McGuffie’s shot from the box the ball shot into the air and with his back to goal the he hooked it high over keeper and back-tracking defender and into the gaping net.

With their tails up the visitors began press for a second with McGeoghegan much more prominent in supporting the attacks down the right while Potter was doing a fine job in spoiling any counter-attacks by the home side. Malone’s effort from distance sailed over the bar and the Peasy defence stood firm to clear a Glens corner as Andrew and McChesney challenged.

Just before the hour mark McChesney landed awkwardly after bringing McLean’s run down the right to an end and was replaced by Chris Meikle. The Glens were soon back on the front foot and Malone played a cute one-two with Andrew to progress into the box and although his strike was on target McNeil held comfortably. While at the other end McGarrity had to be brave to dive at the feet at Daw.

Midway through the half McGuffie jinked his way through the middle into the box only for his shot to be deflected over the bar by the timely tackle by Peter Bradley. The resultant corner came within a whisker of finding McGuffie’s head but the ball grazed off Chisholm’s head instead and the corner that followed was eventually cleared.

Jamie McGeoghegan and James Brown

Both sides made changes with the visitors bringing on Darren McGill for Daniel Orsi and soon after John Paul Boyle for Mick McCann while the Peasy brought on Gavin Stokes for Darren McLean.

McGill turned a couple of defenders at the corner of the box to slip the ball to Andrew and his low drilled angled shot was well blocked by McNeil’s outstretched leg. On 78 minutes a Peasy free kick from the left was chested down deep into the six yard box by Stevenson for Daw to pounce only for McGarrity to pull out a magnificent save with an outstretched arm.

Brian McGarrity safe hands

The visitors countered with McGill’s run down the left and before picking out Boyle and his attempt roll the ball back for Andrew was intercepted in the nick of time by Ketterer.
With 10 minutes to go the home side almost regain their after Michael Daly did well to engineer a cracking shot from a tight angle to beat McGarrity only for the ball to smash off the post. Although both sides created a couple of half chances before the final whistle neither keeper was tested.

West of Scotland Super League Premier Division : Match 1

Saturday 29th August Loch Park , New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 0(0)

KIRKINTILLOCH ROB ROY 2 (0)

Glenafton played host to newly promoted Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in the opening league game of the season and it was the visitors that started brightly. A free-kick in the opening minute saw former Rabs player Jamie Hay win the aerial dual with Willie Sawyers and then Alan Cairns get in a timely block on Daniel Boyle’s attempt to test Brian McGarrity in goal. The keeper then had to be alert to cut out a cross destined for Alistair Martin at the back post.

While Kirkintilloch pressed in numbers the Glens were relying on long balls as their main source of attack and on 5 minutes Mick McCann did well to force his way into the box only for the back-tracking Jonathan Carter and keeper John Murdoch to combine and block the striker’s shot at goal. Back came the Rabs and McGarrity got a strong hand to a close range effort from Kevin Watt to push the ball over the bar. From the resultant corner the keeper, surrounded by players from both sides, got a fist to the ball under the bar and then clutched the loose ball as it fell to the ground.

On 15 minutes Darren McGill got the jump on Carter only for the defender to impede his run into the box. Hay’s free-kick thundered into the wall and the danger cleared. Soon after the Gavin Mackie’s free-kick from 30 yards out beat the Glens’ wall and keeper but the ball found the side netting.

Play was now much more even in terms of possession as the Glens midfield began to enjoy more of the ball and push forward more regularly. Chris Malone came out on top in a tussle for the ball and tried his luck from distance only for the ball to sail over the bar. Jamie MGeoghegan then picked up a knock-on by McCann and made excellent progress down the right flank to earn a corner. Carter and Murdoch, well off his line, appeared to have the kick covered but Hay got his head to the ball only for Daniel McKenzie to clear it off the line. Following a stramash in the box the cool head and right boot of Paul Finnigan set up a Rabs counter-attack and set up Scott Upton to pick out Sawyers in space who took a touch before pulling his shot wide of target. Both sides created a couple of half chances before Sawyers was denied deep in the box by a well timed tackle from Cairns.

Craig McGuffie and Jonathan Carter

On the half hour mark Craig McGuffie gathered the ball on the half way line and with Carter hot on his heels made a determined run into the box only for Murdoch to rush from his line and steal the ball from his feet at the penalty spot. Rabs broke upfield and Finnigan released Upton down the right who whipped a wicked ball across the face of the goal and only inches beyond the reach of Sawyers.

In the closing 15 minutes the Glens enjoyed their best spell with McCann pulling off another save from McCann and McGeoghegan’s runs down the right leading to back to corners the latter of which concluded with Murdoch saving McCann’s header.

Three minutes before the break Rob Roy were awarded a spot kick after McGeoghegan’s innocuous contact with Mackie at the corner of the box. Mackie’s attempt to place in McGarrity’s left had corner was thwarted as the keeper got down lot to push the ball wide and his defence clear the corner-kick that followed.

The home side started the new half strongly. Ally Park on the overlap down the right cut the ball into box for McCann and Murdoch was on hand to clear. McGuffie then attacked down the left and after a cheeky nutmeg on Finnigan fired a ball across the face of goal where Boyle’s outstretched leg did enough to prevent the incoming McCann and McGill getting a touch.

Glens mopped up a couple of attacks before threatening again with back-to-back corner kicks. The first saw Park’s attempt at the near post being diverted wide while the second ended with Murdoch clutching Ryan McChesney’s header.

The big defender was soon in action at the other end when a cross from the right was punched by McGarrity from the head of Sawyers and Carter slipped the loose ball to Watt in space in the left only for McChesney to hunt the ball down and rob the Rab with a super sliding tackle.

Darren McGill and Daniel McKenzie

McGill’s clever pass split the Rabs’s defence allowing McCann to nip into the box but again the alert Murdoch timed his run to perfection and got a strong enough touch on the ball to allow the back tracking McKenzie to mop up the loose ball. Midway through the half both sides made changes with Craig McGuffie making way for Joe Andrew and Chris Duff replacing Gavin Mackie.

Play continued to flow from end to end. Malone burst into the box to complete his one-two with Andrew only for defender to get a touch at the expense of a corner-kick which was only partially cleared before McGeoghegan clipped the ball back into the danger area where Carter coolly dispossessed McCann. The Glens striker was thwarted again after another solo run into the box ended with Murdoch’s block at the near post.

A Rabs break away down the right ended with Sawyers winning a corner-kick and the ball  eventually fell to Boyle in a crowded box and the big defender did well to engineer a shot on target which a wrong-footed McGarrity did well to smother.

With 10 minutes to go the visitors took the lead. Sawyers apparently boxed in at the right hand corner flag turned and took two Glens defenders out the game with a cute pass to Chris Duff who headed unimpeded before powering a low drive in at the near post.

The goal initiated further substitutions with John Paul Boyle replacing Mick McCann for the home side and Kevin Watt making way for Stephen Maguire for the Rob Roy.

Willie Sawyers slams home the second

Five minutes later Kirkintilloch doubled their lead after clearing a Glens’ free-kick into the box and catching them on the break. Martin fed Upton on the right who made excellent progress on the right before taking out the remnants of the home defence with a peach of a pass to Willie Sawyers almost on the penalty spot. Although the outrushing McGarrity forced him to go wide the striker kept his composure to lash a left-footer into the gaping net. F/T Glens 0 Rob Roy 2
