Glenafton played host to Bonnyrigg Rose in the Scottish Junior Cup semi-final 1st leg some 54 years after the sides last met in the competition which was also at the semi-final stage. It took three games to separate the teams with the Glens progressing to their first final after an extra time winner in a 2nd replay and like then today’s match proved to be close encounter with the home side taking a 1-0 lead into the second leg at New Dundas Park next Saturday.

The Glens had to make a late change to their starting line-up after top goalscorer Chris Dallas, who had picked up a knee-knock against Beith last week, required treatment in the pre-match warm-up before being deemed unfit to play and his place taken by Joe Andrew.

After club captains Craig Menzies and Jonathan Stewart exchanged club pennants the Glens kicked-off against a cold and strong gusting wind. The visitors fashioned the first attempt a goal after Lewis Turner and Alan Horne combined well wide on the right before the latter broke into the box and fired for goal only for the ball to be blocked by David Gray. It was the Glens midfielder that set up the home side’s opening chance with a free kick floated to the back post where Kyle McAusland beat Dean Hoskins to the ball only for his header to sneak inches wide of target.

On 7 minutes Turner’s attempt to gather a one-two with Wayne McIntosh inside the Glens box was intercepted by Menzies’ timely tackle and the grounded midfielder appeals for a penalty waved away.

The home side enjoyed a good spell of pressure from a series of set pieces none of which tested Bonnyrigg keeper Michael Andrews. A wind-assisted Gray free kick from 35 yards out sailed over the bar. Soon after his corner-kick to the near post was cleared at the expense of throw-in which resulted in the midfielder gathering the ball on the edge of the box before thundering a shot screaming wide of the post. Back-to-back corner-kicks quickly followed, the first cleared at the near post and the second picked up at the back post by McAusland before the defender, from a tight angle, lashed a shot that screamed over the finger-tips of the keepers’ hands and over the bar. On 20 minutes a fine run by John Carter ended with Rose conceding yet another free kick on the fringes of the penalty box before Gray’s free-kick curled wide of target.

aa_DSC_4791.JPG

Joe Andrew and Darren McGill line up for a corner-kick

The visitors created the best chance of the game thus far on 25 minutes.  Ruaridh Donaldson blocked a McAusland clearance, recovered the loose ball before tearing down the left-wing and whipped a perfectly weighted pass into box to be met by Kieran McGachie who struck the ball sweetly from six yards only for Brian McGarrity to pull off a superb reflex save and the alert keeper then  win the race to pounce on the loose ball.

Back came Glenafton through another Gray free-kick that deflected off the defensive wall and dipped just over the bar. The resulting corner-kick was cleared by McGachie at the near post and the follow-up corner came to nothing.

At the other end McAusland and Ryan McChesney took turns to repel Rose attacks with powerful clearing headers. The visitors continued to press and the referee played a good advantage after a late tackle by Gray at the half-way line to allow the Rose attack to progress and the ball finally falling for McGachie but again the striker was foiled by the onrushing McGarrity. Ally Park then beat Hoskins to the jump as a free-kick was floated to the back post.

aa_DSC_4608

Darren McGill, Andrew and Carter combined well to move the ball from the left hand side their own half to the Rose box where a series of three timely tackles on Andrew (twice) and Carter prevented the home side from engineering a shot at goal. Carter then picked out Andrew on the right and the striker took a touch or two before advancing to the corner of the penalty box and lashing a shot that whizzed past Andrews at full stretch and just wide of the post.

In the closing action of the half another Glens corner-kick was cleared without difficulty and at the other end McGarrity bravely clutched a cross from the feet of McIntosh.

The visitors now with the wind at their back won an early corner-kick that was confidently and comfortably clutched out the air by McGarrity.

Glenafton were coping well playing against the wind and pressed with some fine passing play. On 58 minutes a Glens attack deep into the box was headed clear and although the ball was picked up by Adam Nelson a loose pass was snapped up by Dan Orsi. The midfielder instantly forged forward before striking a sweet shot from 20 yards out that squeezed through the gap between two defenders (one with his eye on the overlapping decoy Ally Park) and beyond the outstretched arm of Andrews into the left-hand corner of the net.

A minute later McAusland’s long through ball was gathered by Carter who pushed forward where after nutmegging Edward Moyes on the outskirts of the box both players chased down the loose ball in the box where Moyes tackle brought down Carter and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. The Rose defender’s claims that he fairly won the ball were waved away and the luckless Moyes was shown a red card for his robust protests. Although McGill’s spot kick sent Andrews the wrong way his spot kick thundered off the base of post and the ball fell for McAusland who from 20 yards thundered a shot that warmed the hands of the now upright keeper.

aa_DSC_5037.JPG

Glenafton took full advantage of their numerical advantage and enjoyed the majority of the attacking play that followed whilst handling Rose’s less frequent breaks comfortably with Craig Menzies sweeping them up in some style.

aa_DSC_5127.JPG

On 63 minutes Carter came close to doubling the Glens lead after running onto to a clever through ball from Orsi and holding off two defenders in the box before turning and firing a low shot that slipped past the wrong-footed keeper and inches wide of the post.

aa_DSC_5145.JPG

Joe Andrew chases down the ball as Kerr Young closes in

Both sides made substitutions with Rose bringing on Jonathan Brown and Andrew Kidd for Wayne McIntosh and Adam Nelson while Glenafton replaced Darren McGill and Dan Orsi with Conor Lynass and Ryan Borris.

Bonnyrigg finished with a flurry beginning with a long throw into a crowded box where Turner snapped up McGachie’s knock on only for his looping shot to drop safely into the hands of McGarrity. A corner-kick cleared by the Glens defence and eventually picked up by Jonathan Stewart but the full back’s shot from distance was well of target. Stewart, with a strong claim for Rose’s man-of-the-match, then had a near post header saved by McGarrity and in the last action of the game the ball from another corner-kick didn’t bounce kindly for him and his fresh-air shot was promptly followed by the final whistle.

Glenafton travelled to face fellow title contenders Beith and prior to kick-off the current Scottish Junior Cup holders over the tannoy kindly wished the Glens good-luck in their Scottish semi-final next week which was greatly appreciated by the travelling support

aa_a_sunshineonbeith

Sunshine on Beith

The visitors started off in determined fashion facing up the Bellsdale slope that would be bathed in the sunshine on Beith for the full energy sapping ninety minutes. Dan Orsi was quick off the mark surging up the right flank to whip a cross to the back post that ended inches beyond the incoming Darren McGill. Down the hill and keeper Brian McGarrity dealt comfortably with a low angled drive by Conor McGlinchey from the right-hand side of the penalty box. Kyle McCausland headed clear a Beith corner-kick at the near post and won the aerial battle again as the recovered ball was fired back into the Glens goal-mouth.

aa_a_dannyorsi01.JPG

Dan Orsi on the move

The visitors replied through Chris Dallas holding off two opponents tight on the right-wing before playing the ball upfield for Joe Andrew to chase only for keeper Stephen Grindlay to get their first and to despatch the ball downfield as Andrew nipped at his heels. Ten minutes gone and the keeper held an Orsi shot from outside box and a minute later could only look on as Orsi’s looping header crashed off the top of the crossbar.

At the other end Tom Collins, trapped in a pocket of three Glens defenders in the box, turned well to get a shot away that failed to seriously test McGarrity.

McGill’s powerful run through the middle was ended by a robust challenge from Martin McLaughlin. The resulting free kick from 22 yards was struck well by David Gray’s but took a nick of the wall and Beith mopped up the corner-kick that followed. Glens continued to press and on 23 minutes took the lead with a mouth-watering goal. Park deep in his own half held off Paul Frize to slip the ball to Orsi on the right who jinked past Richie Burke leaving the defender at base camp as he set off up the slope and as Jamie Wilson chased him down he released a forward pass to McGill on the outskirts of the box with Chris Dallas matching his run. McGill continued his run into the box and as the back-tracking McGlinchley geared up to block the Glens midfielder shot at goal he calmly squared the ball for the unmarked Dallas to slam the ball beyond the reach of the keeper from 8 yards out.

The hosts responded well and Cameron Marlow was forced to head a Beith free-kick floated into the box over his own bar and Ryan McChesney then won the back-post header to clear the resulting corner-kick as McLaughlin waited to pounce.

Although half chances came and went for either side it was now the hosts that looked the more threatening and on 36 minutes McGarrity pulled off a fine save from a close-range header by David McGowan.

Glens defended manfully as Beith pressed for an equaliser and had a chance to land a sucker punch in the closing minutes of the half after McLaughlin brought down Andrew on the outskirt of the box only for Gray’s free-kick to take another deflection of the wall and dip inches over the bar while nothing came of the corner-kick that followed. H/T Beith 0 Glens 1

Glenafton were forced to make a change at the break after goalscorer Chris Dallas couldn’t shake off a knock to the knee and was replaced by John Carter.

The hosts were first to show and McGarrity & McAusland double-teamed to freeze out Tom Collins at the near post as he tried to capitalise on a loose ball. Glens eventually scrambled clear the corner-kick and indeed almost prospered through a break downfield by McGill only to be foiled through a timely tackle from Kevin McDonald.

The tempo was relentless as Beith mounted another attack through Calum Watt on the right but again the visitors defence proved impenetrable and again a counter-attack followed as Marlow launched the ball down the field where Andrew and Carter combined well before another timely interception by McDonald.

Back came Beith but with a wall of red shirts in the box holding firm Frize fired a shot from 22 yards forcing another fine save from McGarrity on 52 minutes. Soon after the keeper leapt unchallenged to cleanly clutch another corner-kick.

Brian’s ball

The visitors enjoyed a good spell of possession and McGill’s ball into the box saw Carter hold off McLaughlin to pick out Andrew only for McDonald to intervene again.  Orsi slipped a neat pass to Andrew on the right-hand side of the box and after shaking off McLaughlin he fashioned an angled shot that was pushed away by Grindlay.

On 62 minutes Beith made a double substitution with Frize and Collins making way for Joe Bradley and Ross McPherson. Four minutes later the hosts carved out a great chance after Christie weaved his way to the right-hand side of the six yard only to lash his shot wide of the near post with McPherson at the box post feeling a pass to him was the better option. Beith continued to press and while the Glens defended in numbers including McGill & Marlow blocking Christie’s way to goal and Marlow later taking the ball from the toe of McPherson with the keeper to beat from 6 yards out.

Glens stand firm

On 72 minutes Glenafton were forced to make another change with injured captain Craig Menzies making way for Chris Meikle and for minutes later Ryan Borris replaced Dan Orsi, both players leaving the field to loud applause from the Afton supporters.

Borris was soon in the thick of it gathering a pass down the right from Carter before whipping the ball into the heart of the penalty box where it was trapped by McGill before getting a shot away that was caught cleanly by Grindlay.

Cameron Elliot, on for Calum Watt, made good progress into the Glens box to pick to set up Christie or another shot from a tight angled which McGarrity held tight at the near post. At the other end McGill’s perseverance saw him shake off McGlinchey on the outskirts of the box to slide the ball to Andrew who got the better of McDonald before hitting a low shot from the corner of the six yard and although it beat the outstretched arm of the grounded goalie the ball drifted inches wide of the far post and the same distance from the toe of Carter.

The Glens repelled another attack from their hosts with McChesney nicking the ball from the toe of Elliot and Park mopping up the loose ball. Just as it seemed the Glens had browbeat Beith and weathered the storm the hosts conjured up the equaliser on 85 minutes. The ball fell for Joe Bradley on the outskirts of the left-hand side of the box to leather an unstoppable volley into the back of the net.

aa_a_goalbeith

Joy and despair at Beith’s late leveller

Although the host tails were up the visitors head stayed up and almost nicked it a minute before time after great work by Carter in the box to pick out McGill at the edge of the six-yard box and with McGlinchey bearing down and after a great shift his shot sailed over the bar.  The Glens stayed on the front foot and in the last action of the game McGlinchey cleared a corner-kick at the near post.

Premier Division leaders Glenafton suffered only their second league defeat of the season at the hands of Largs Thistle fighting for their own Premier Division survival after the home side romped to a 4-1 win against their guests who played 80 minutes with 10 men. The Glens slip to second place and are now two points behind leaders Auchinleck Talbot the New Cumnock side still having a game in hand.

Glens enjoyed some early pressure with John Carter and Joe Andrew seeing a lot of the ball in and about the ball box with a shot from the latter which was comfortably saved by keeper Sean Graham the only real chance created in that spell. At the other end a low angled shot from James Marks was saved well by the feet of keeper Brian McGarrity and the resulting corner mopped up by the Glens defence.

aa_DSC_3159.JPG

John Carter on the move

On 11 minutes the visitors were reduced to 10 men after Alan Cairns challenge for a 50-50 ball brought a flag from the assistant referee and soon after a red card from the referee, quickly followed by Glens manager Craig McEwan being sent from the dug-out for his protest.

aa_a_goal01.JPG

Kevin Struthers (No 10) culrs the ball home 1-0 Largs

The visitors were clearly rattled and struggled to get to grips with Thistle as the made the most of the man advantage. The heavens opened for a spell and from a Glens perspective it was a case of “it never rains but it pours”. On 24 minutes, they were caught by a defence splitting pass from Iain Fisher that left Kevin Struthers through on goal and as Kyle McAusland blocked his path to goal he cutely curled the shot round the defender and into the corner of the net beyond the reach of McGarrity at full stretch.

aa_DSC_3277.JPG

Kyle McAusland and Craig Menzies with Gary Fleming

The visitors rallied briefly and on the half-hour mark keeper Graham was forced to rush out his box to head clear a through ball as Andrew threatened and he could only look on as Carter’s attempt to find he vacant goal from 35 yards out sailed off target. Graham then dealt comfortably with a Ryan Borris shot from outside the box.

aa_a_goal02.JPG

James Marks heads home for 2-0 Largs

Largs however looked the livelier in all areas of the pitch with the contribution of attacking full-back Fisher catching the eye. On 34 minutes the hosts doubled the lead after James Marks slipped the ball to the overlapping Struthers tight on the right flank who quickly whipped the ball to the near post to for Marks to rise unchallenged and head home to complete an exquisite one-two.

It was almost a case of ‘from saint to sinner’ for the Largs hit man ten minutes after his high boot caught keeper Brian McGarrity in the face, however the referees judged a yellow card sufficed leaving the visitors further aggrieved.  Minutes later Marks nearly rubbed salt in that wound after a Struthers pass set him free in the box however with team-mate Matty Bennett in acres of space waiting for the tap in the striker opted for a shot at goal that was well held by McGarrity.

H/T Largs 2 Glens 0

Glenafton brought on striker Chris Dallas for midfielder Ryan Borris as the league leaders tried to salvage something from a game that was passing the 10 men by. Within two minutes of the restart they came within a whisker of halving the deficit after David Gray’s shot from outside the box cannoned off a defender and fell for Joe Andrew to take up a touch and line up a shot from six yards only for the alert Fisher to block his effort.

aa_DSC_3444.JPG

Iain Fisher closes down Joe Andrew

Two minutes later Fisher turned provider launching a long ball from the half-way line into the box and while the Glens defence waited for the offside flag Matty Bennet continued his run, collected the ball and then lobbed it high over the head of the advancing McGarrity and into the gaping net. The 10 men now 3-0 down with 48 minutes gone!

aa_a_goal03.JPG

The visitors then enjoyed their best spell of the match and pulled one back on 56 minutes after Ally Park and Dallas combined well in the middle of the park before setting McAusland free down the right flank to whip the ball into box for Joe Andrew to guide it home from six yards out amid claims for offside from the Largs defence.

aa_a_goal04

Joe Andrew makes it 3-1

Glens made a couple of changes and brought on Darren McGill for David Gray and then Dan Orsi for John Carter while the visitors replaced Bennet with Robert Love. The visitors continued to press and a back-post header from Dallas was well saved by Graham but few further clear cut chances were created before the visitors added to their tally.

aa_DSC_3527.JPG

Thistle’s fourth goal came on 79 minutes just after the ball had found net only for the flag to go up to award the hosts a corner kick which was dispatched to the back post where the unmarked Marks bulleted home a header.

James Marks completes the scoring 4-1

With 5 minutes to the Glens had a chance of a late consolation after Orsi forced his way into the right-hand side of the box before his ball across the goal took out three defenders & goalkeeper and although the incoming Dallas got an outstretched leg to the ball he couldn’t guide it into the net.

Glenafton made six changes from the side the started last Saturday in the Scottish Junior Cup victory over Sauchie Juniors. In came Blair Lochhead, Dan Orsi, Chris Meikle, Conor Lynass, Joe Andrew and John Carter for Brian McGarrity, Craig Menzies, Ryan McChesney, Ally Park, Mick McCann & Cameron Marlow.

The teams met two weeks ago in a league encounter at Loch Park when the home side came out on top 3-1 in what was a hard-fought contest. Today’s match was no different with the hosts just edging it with a late penalty kick.

Kilbirnie took the lead after Paul Harkins wide on the left floated a free kick into the box which was knocked met by Ciaran McElroy for defender Mick O’Byrne to drill a shot through a ruck of players which ended in the ball taking a wicked deflection off Conor Lynass to sent the keeper the wrong way before nestling in the net.

Glenafton equalised in similar fashion after winning a free kick a few yards from the edge of the D on the penalty box. Up stepped dead ball specialist and former Kilbirnie player David Gray and although far from his best kick the ball rattled off the wall to deflect the ball into the far post while keeper Kieran Hughes headed for the near post.

H/T Glens 1 Kilbirnie 1

All square at the break both sides had decent chances before the late drama where in a cruel twist of fate  Lynass’s shot from inside the box was blocked by the arm of O’Byrne, the protagonists of the opening goal. With 2 minutes to go Gray slotted home the spot kick for the fourth goal in a Glens shirt against his former side and secure progression to the second round.aa_a_davidgray02.jpg

GLENAFTON TO THE FORE AND SEE OFF SAUCHIE

Glenafton progressed to the last four of the Scottish Junior Cup for the 10th time in the club’s history with a 1-0 win over Sauchie in what was the first meeting between the two sides. Thanks to the hard work of the committee and volunteers the park passed an early morning pitch inspection and thankfully the heavy rain forecast for the afternoon failed to precipitate.

Glenafton made four changes from the side that the started against Kilbimie last week with Ryan McChesney, Ally Park (both returning from injury) Ryan Borris and Chris Dallas replacing Chris Meikle, Dan Orsi, John Carter and the injured Darren McGill.

Flowing football was always going to be challenging on the difficult surface however it was following a neat interchange of passes in a crowded box that set up a chance on 4 minutes for the Glens through Mick McCann’s lob from the 18-yard line that skimmed of the top of the bar with keeper Greg Matiland a spectator. Sauchie spurned a good chance a minute later following a corner kick to the back post where two of their players challenged in the air for the same ball and the effort went wide.  Back came Glenafton and went ahead on 12 minutes. David Gray deep on the left side switched play to the right for Ryan Borris to gather the ball and progress to right hand corner of the penalty box before drilling a low ball into the danger area for Chris Dallas to guide it home before keeper and defender could react.

aa_a_goal01aa_DSC_1950aa_DSC_1959

The home side continued to press for a second goal without seriously testing Maitland while closing down the free scoring Sauchie. Ally Park and Gray bossing the midfield and Ryan McChesney  winning most things in the air to break down any Sauchie moves not played on the tricky surface.

The visitors came more into the game in the closing 15 minutes of the half with Andy Shirra shining in the middle of the park. On 32 minutes Sauchie’s claim for a penalty kick were waved away. Gary McCulloch wide on the left whipped a vicious cross to the near post where the aerial battle between striker Darren Cummings and keeper Brian McGarrity ended with ball falling free and the keeper winning the battle on the ground to recover the ball as the striker tumbled to the ground.  The rest of the half passed without any further clear-cut chances, however Glens were forced into making a change and after Mick McCann failed to shake off a knock he was replaced by Joe Andrew .

H/T Glens 1 Sauchie 0

The Wee County side were quick off the blocks after the break and Joshua Flood warmed the hands of McGarrity with a shot from 12 yards. It was to be a false dawn however and the Glens went on to dominate the second half in terms of possession and chances.  On 53 minutes Dallas rose head and shoulders above the visitors’ defence to connect with a Cameron Marlow cross only for the ball to sail over the bar.

aa_a_dallas_chance.JPG

Chris Dallas heads over

Two minutes and two corner kicks later the striker’s header flashed wide of the post and soon after Maitland got down low to push Borris’s low drive from outside the box round the post for another corner-kick.  Borris was denied again on 65 minutes with a superb reflex save from the keeper as he improvised to get a foot and block a shot from the edge of the six-yard box. Two minutes later Joe Andrew, on for the injured Mick McCann, leathered a shot from 22 yards but again Maitland had its measure and blocked the shot before smothering the loose ball.  The Glens striker fashioned another shot from deeper in the box and although looking goal-bound it was deflected wide for a corner-kick.

aa_a_borris_chance

Greg Maitland saves from Ryan Borris

On 70 minutes Glens made a double substitution with goal-maker Ryan Borris and goal-taker Chris Dallas making way for Dan Orsi and John Carter. The visitors also made a change with Colin Samuel coming on for former Glenafton striker Ryan Millar and unfortunately chances had been thin on the ground for Sauchie’s top goal-scorer.

Sauchie rallied and enjoyed a decent spell of pressure without however creating space within a sea of a well-drilled defence of red shirts to set up any chance of note.

At the other end Maitland narrowed the angled expertly to force Carter’s shot wide and a minute later palmed down the striker’s shot from distance.

On 77 minutes Sauchie came within a whisker of grabbing what seemed an unlikely equaliser after good work down the right by substitute Brian Morgan to pick out the inrushing Samuel only for his shot under the challenge from McGarrity to fly wide of the post. The visitors’ hopes of salvaging a replay were dealt a severe blow after being reduced to ten men on 83 minutes. Play-maker Andy Shirra earned two yellow cards for two rash challenges within three minutes, the first for taking the legs from Marlow and the second for a tackle from behind on Gray.

In between the cards Maitland had punched away Gray’s thunderous free kick from 30 yards before saving perhaps his best save for last when an outstretched leg prevented Cameron Marlow from doubling the Glens lead with three minutes to go.

In the closing minutes the home side won a series of corner-kicks and free-kicks as the clocked ticked down before the final whistle gave way to celebrations and commiseration on and off the park.

GLENS COME OUT ON TOP AGAINST BATTLING BLASTIES

Glenafton kicked off with the same eleven that started against Largs in last week’s league match at Loch Park.  With leaders Rob Roy’s match against Arthurlie postponed the New Cumnock side knew that victory in their game of hand would take them to top of the league.

Kilbirnie were quick out the blocks and their early pressure forced and corner-kick quickly followed by a free-kick at the right-hand side of the penalty box with neither of these deliveries converted into an attempt at goal.

The visitors first chance came on 10 minutes when Cammy Marlow deep in the six-yard box stretched to get a toe to a long free-kick from David Gary only for the ball roll inches wide of the post.

In a game peppered with stoppages for free-kicks Kilbirnie continued to look the livelier with former Queen’s Park midfielder David Anderson pulling the strings and former Rob Roy winger Paul Ronald keeping the Glens defence on their toes. On 15 minutes the two combined well down the right flank before Ronald was brought down close to the corner flag and then floated the free-kick into the heart of the six-yard box to present Martin Grehan with a free header that ultimately lacked the power or direction to test keeper Brian McGarrity who clutched the ball effortlessly. The Glens defence prevailed as Ladeside pressed for the opener.

Midway through the half the home side succeeded in string some passes together and Kyle McAusland forced his way to the bye-line and whipped a ball to the near post where it was headed clear by Ciaran Donnelly. The resulting corner was headed clear by Anderson as a line of red shirts queued up for the delivery. At the other end, Forde gathered the ball in the box but with McAusland blocking his way to goal the striker made his way for corner flag and took a tumbled before exiting the box – and was duly booked for simulation.

Glens enjoyed the closing 15 minutes with the half beginning with Darren McGill giving Mark Staunton the slip to slip ball into the box for Mick McCann in space between two defenders only for the striker to skew his shot wide of target.  Cameron Marlow stooped to win a header from a corner-kick that sent the ball looping over the bar.

Mick McCann 1-0

On 38 minutes Mick McCann burst into the box leaving defender David Green looking at his clean pair of heels and before the back-tracking Staunton could close him down he cracked an angled shot from 12 yards that found that gap between the outstretched hands of keeper Kieran Hughes and the far post to put the Glens ahead.

Although the visitors regrouped and started the second half as brightly as they had the first it was the Glens that took their chance and in some style. Marlow, on the half way line, kept his balance to thread a perfectly weighted pass through the middle that took both centre backs out of play and presented McCann with a free run at goal with John Carter for company. The striker however wasted no time and from 22 yards lashed an unstoppable shot that was still bulging the net as the airborne keeper crashed to the ground to double the Glens lead on 53 minutes.

Ladeside rallied and on 59 minutes halved the deficit. Grehan’s close range header from a corner-kick was blocked in the six-yard box by McGill only for Adam Forde to snap up the loose ball and turning neatly before squeezing a low drilled shot home at the back post.

Tails up the visitors pushed for an equaliser but their hopes were dealt a blow after Darren Smith’s tumble in the box was adjudged to be simulation earning the winger a second yellow card and his marching orders. Matters almost got worse when another peach of a pass from Marlow released McCann into the box only for the back-tracking Donnelly to time his tackle to perfection to prevent the striker with a clean shot at goal and then the keeper block his second bite of the cherry. From the corner-kick that followed Dan Orsi’s near post header flashed inches wide of the back post.

Ronald went equally close at the other end with an angled shot from the left corner of the penalty box.

Glens made a double substitution with Ryan Borris coming on for the injured Cameron Marlow and John Carter making way for Chris Dallas while Ladeside brought on Stevie Meechan for Harkins.  Soon after the substitutions were completed with the home side bringing on Conor Lynass for Dan Orsi and the visitors replacing Ross McKinnon with James Creaney

Although Kilbirnie through Anderson continued to press for the equaliser it was Glenafton that were creating the best of the chances against the 10 men. With 10 minutes to go Dallas’s knock on left McCann with a one-one on the keeper with Hughes coming out on top. Five minutes later the striker did well to meet Dallas’s cross from the bye-line and engineer and overhead shot at goal but was again denied his hat-trick by the keeper.

The Glens won a couple or corner-kicks late in the match and elected for the short variety to run down the clock. A free kick from the right-hand corner of the penalty box proved too tempting and David Gray floated a ball with pin point accuracy on to the head of Chris Dallas in acres of space between two defenders to guide the ball beyond the reach of Hughes to complete the scoring on 89 minutes.

Glens returned to league business with the visit of Largs Thistle and earned all three points to close the gap on league leaders Kirkintilloch Rob Roy to two points with the New Cumnock side having a game in hand.

Several changes were made to the starting eleven that defeated Dunbar United in the Scottish Junior Cup 5th Round. Chris Meikle was recalled from his loan spell at Benburb to replace the injured Ryan McChesney while striker John Carter made his first start for the side replacing Joe Andrew who was unavailable due to work commitments. Kyle McAusland and Darren McGill came in for Ryan Borris and Conor Lynass.

The home side created most of the half chances that were on show in the opening cncounters without however seriously testing Thistle keeper Sean Lundy.

Glens breakthrough came just after the half hour mark through the award of a penalty kick. McAusland’s throw-in from the right was gathered in the box by John Carter and after holding off one defender, giving another the slip, riding the tackle of a third he was brought down by Laurie McMaster back supporting the defence. Darren McGill stepped up and lashed the ball home to put the home side one up on 31 minutes.

Four minutes later after breaking down a Largs’ attack deep in the Glens half McGill sprinted upfield and as defender Creag Little closed him down he slipped the ball into the path of Mick McCann, who had matched his run, and the striker took one look and one touch to guide the ball beyond Lundy and into the net.

The visitors created their best chance of the half when a long throw from Ian Fisher into the box was headed on by Kevin Struthers and the ball met on the volley by the irrepressible James Marks only for it to crash off the underside of the bar before forlorn claims that the ball had crossed the line were waved away.

Thistle began the second half brightly with a couple of decent chances created again from Fisher’s throws into the box. For the first Little’s close range header lacked the power to test keeper Brian McGarrity while for the second the keeper pounced on the ball just as Marks was trying to tee up a shot a goal from within the six-yard box.

Glens responded with a quick break that saw McCann release Carter to run through on goal only for his shot to whiz inches wide of the post.

The visitors continued to threaten and John Tennent whipped a vicious free kick into the goalmouth from wide on the left that forced a fine save from McGarrity to push the ball onto the bar and out for a corner-kick.

However, it was Glenafton that added to their tally on 65 minutes. McAusland wide on the right chipped a perfectly weighted ball to the back post where Darren McGill outjumped Fisher to head the ball over the outstretched arm of the keeper and into the net.

Three minutes later Thistle’s cause suffered another blow when Struthers earned a second yellow card. However the 10 men rallied and pulled one back on 74 minutes when John Tennent fired home a spot kick after McGill had barged McMaster in the box.

Two minutes from time Glenafton completed the scoring after a fine passage of passing play. David Gray on the right played the ball back to Alan Cairns to switch play down the left to McGill who instantly dispatched the ball down the wing for substitute Chris Dallas to chase and gather before advancing to the dead ball line and cut the ball across the face of goal for the incoming John Carter to net from close range for his first goal for the club.

GLENS SEE OFF SEASIDERS AND SET SAIL FOR THE QUARTERS

Glenafton travelled to face Dunbar United in the 5th round of the Scottish Junior Cup in the third meeting between the two sides in the competition.  They first met in 1961 at the Quarter-Final stage when a then record crowd of 4,200 at Loch Park witnessed a 1-1 draw. The replay at Countess Park ended in the scoreline before Dunbar triumphed 1-0 in second replay at Hannah Park, Shotts. Dunbar went on to win the Scottish Junior Cup that year and it was good to meet up with some Dunbar supporters who took time out to share their memories and stories of that Glens visit. One of the travelling supporters from New Cumnock that day was Mary Dornan who was snapped by the Cumnock Chronicle (bottom left) celebrating John McNaught’s goal. Mary couldn’t make the return trip this year but hopefully she will have a chance to see the Glens in the Scottish at Loch Park this season as she did at the semi-final stage against Camelon three seasons ago.

The second meeting between Glens and Dunbar was in the 3rd round of 1988/89 at Loch Park with  the Seasiders coming out on top again with a a 2-1 win.

With Kyle McAusland on holiday and Ally Park down with the flu the Glens made a number changes to the side that defeated East Kilbride Thistle in the 4th round. Dan Orsi came in for McAusland at right back while David Gray and Conor Lynnas replaced Park and Darren McGill. Up front Mick McCann came in for Chris Dallas to partner Joe Andrew.

Glenafton kicked off and before any real chance had been created  Dunbar  were reduced to 10 men on 3 minutes after Darren Gillion received his marching orders for a raising a knee into the face of Ryan Borris. Five minutes later the visitors came close to taking the lead  after Conor Lynnas weaved his way into the box before drilling a low shot that only just sneaked past the far post. On 15 minutes Glens won a free kick so far from goal that Dunbar opted not to set up a defensive wall. With a clear line of sight David Gray could hardly avoid the temptation to  blast the ball on its way like a low flying goal-seeking missile to explode into the back of the net beyond the valiant effort of the keeper to disarm it.

Three minutes later the New Cumnock side almost doubled their lead when Ryan McChesney’s downward header from a corner-kick was gathered deep inside the six yard box by Borris and with his back to goal his back-heeler hit the base of the post.

Midway through the half the referee pulled up with an injury and after a 12 minute delay he was replaced by one of the assistant referee’s running the line who in turn was replaced by a member of Dunbar’s committee.

Glenafton earned a couple of corner kicks which were duly cleared and Borris’s shot from a distance whizzed past the post. Gradually however the 10 men began to assert themselves and looked lively down both flanks with Dean Ballantyne’s play catching the eye. A lung bursting down the left ended with a low angled shot that was held well by keeper Brain McGarrity at his near post on the half hour mark. Two minutes later another break through the middle by Ballantyne ended with him opting to pick out Sam Young’s run into the box with a glorious pass and although he initially gave Alan Cairns the slip the defender recovered to get a great block on the striker’s shot which sent the ball sailing over the bar.

The Seasiders continued to push and after the resultant corner kick was only partially cleared the ball was whipped back into the box from wide on the right where it fell for Darren Handling only for his shot from 18 yards to be tipped away by McGarrity . Although the loose ball was fired home by Ballantyne the stand-in referee deemed it was from an offside position. On 37 minutes Glenafton suffered a set-back when centre-back Ryan McChesney suffered a hamstring injury and brought on striker Chris Dallas with fellow striker Mick McCann now partnering Craig Menzies in the centre of defence.  In the closing minutes of the half keeper John Johnstone did well to get down low to hold on to angled shot from Dallas. H/T Dunbar 0 Glens 1

The half began with play running from end to end and half chances coming and going. Young’s wicked cross from tight on the right had McGarrity leaping to finger-tip over the bar at the back post. His counterpart Johnstone then safely held Cameron Marlow’s shot from 20 yards out, as Dallas waited to pounce on any rebound. Dunbar then enjoyed a sustained period of possession without however engineering a clear shot at goal and Menzies and McCann were winning the aerial battles in the Glens box.

Brian McGarrity takes no chances

On 65 minutes Young finally managed to shake off the visitors’ defence only to sky his shot at goal well over the bar and to rub sea-salt in their wounds the next Glens attack ended with Scott Gibson bringing Joe Andrew down in the box and the referee pointing to the spot. Up stepped substitute Darren McGill to blast the ball into the roof of the net and double Glenafton’s lead on 67 minutes.

The Seasiders rallied briefly before the wind was taken from their sails on 76 minutes as Glens added a third. MGill picked out Cairns on the overlap down the left who in turn threaded a superb ball into the box for substitute John Carter to hold off a defender before feeding Marlow to clip the ball to the far corner of the six-yard box where Chris Dallas leapt to loop a perfectly measured header over the keeper and into the net.
