aa_a_dalemoore05Darren McGill opened the scoring on 17 minutes to kick start a goal rush of 4 goals over a twelve minute spell. Substitute Dale Moore (left), an early replacement for Chris Dallas who suffered a bad back injury, made it 2-0.  Cameron Marlow added a third before Moore bagged his brace to put the home side four up. Tommy Sloan pulled one back for Bankies before the break.

Mick McCann restored Glens four goal lead 10 minutes after the break and Ryan Borris completed the scoring with a well struck free-kick in the closing minutes to seal a 6-1 win.

A pleasing feature of the game were the introduction of Jake Griffin and Ryan Berry came off the bench to make their first apperances in the first team, since signing on from the Glens U19’s at the turn of the year.

Glens made three changes with from the starting line-up against Kilwinning Rangers.  Ian McKnight, Ryan Borris and Dale Moore came in for Alan Cairns (suspended), Conor Lynass and Darren McGill while centre back Ryan McChesney is still out through injury. With manager Craig McEwan on a family break assistant manager Craig Potter was at the helm.

Laurence Dinwoodie took over the hot seat at Girvan following the departure of manger Scott Clelland and his staff midweek and the home side look eager to get off to a flying start under their new boss.

With less than 2 minutes gone Paul Cameron within a whisker of guiding the ball home at the back post after a good cross from the right. Two minutes later Craig Reid whipped another wicked ball into the box for the leaping Darren Mitchell but his powerful header flew wide of target.

Glens carved out their first chance after Dale Moore picked up a pass from Mick McCann on the left before cutting infield and driving forward to hit a low drive from 25 yards that slipped wide of the post. On 10 minutes McCann won a corner that was headed clear only for the Glens to recover the ball and set up Ally Park to thunder a shot from the corner of the penalty box that found the side netting.

aa_a_mcknight.JPG

Ian McKnight and Michael Reilly

Girvan broke upfield and Michael Reilly gave the Glens defence the slip and with the only the keeper to beat the former Glens striker dragged his show wide of target. A minute later he nearly made amends only for his header from a corner kick to dip over the bar.

The game continued to flow from end to end at a good tempo with clear-cut chances thin on the ground before the Glens made the breakthrough on 24 minutes. Jamie McKernon’s free kick was floated deep into the box and although Michael Mossie won the header the ball fell kindly for Ally Park to blast a shot from 15 yards which took a nick off Chris Dallas on the six-yard line before falling for Ryan Borris to pick his spot from 5 yards out.

aa_goal_01a

Ryan slots home the opener

The goal heralded a sustained period of pressure from the visitors with Kyle McAusland and Borris combining well down the right flank and McKernon bossing the midfield. Park had a shot from inside the box blocked while Borris’s effort flew wide of the post. On 28 minutes it was Park again then engineered space to get a shot at goal only for keeper Scott Johnstone to pull off a great save from 12 yards out.

Paul Cameron celebrates the equaliser

Girvan weathered the storm and McKnight kept Reilly at bay coming out on top of a couple aerial battles. The striker however had better luck on the ground after picking up a pass in the box from Jack McDowall. Initially he lost his footing but on recovering he collided with Craig Menzies before tumbling to the ground and the referee pointed to the spot before booking Park for his protests. Paul Cameron kept his cool to slam the ball beyond keeper Brian McGarrity and level the match on 40 minutes. Although the Seasiders pushed for a second it remained all square at the break.

HT Girvan 1 Glens 1

Glens forced an early corner-kick which was cleared. Girvan through Reid with a quick break down the right and cross into the box that was clutched by McGarrity.

Three minutes into the second and the visitors suffered a set back when captain Craig Menzies pulled up injured. He was replaced by Darren McGill who filled an unfamiliar full back role while McAusland moved to centre back to partner McKnight. The reshuffled defence was quickly tested by consecutive Girvan free kicks into the box and the danger cleared both times.

At the other end McKernon clipped a wonderful ball into the box for Chris Dallas but his downward header lacked power and the keeper saved comfortably. Marlow then did well in a crowded box to roll the ball out to McKernon and his low drive from 20 yards was deflected wide for a corner kick, which after a good old stramash was eventually cleared.

Back came Girvan but Reilly couldn’t get the better of McKnight in the box, the young centre half having a fine game, and McKernon was on hand to clear the ball upfield.

aa_goal02a.JPG

Dale Moore fires home to make it 2-1

On 62 minutes Glenafton regained the lead after Dale Moore chased down a ball into the box and held off the defender before unleashing an unstoppable shot from 12 yards past the keeper at full stretch.

aa_DSC_7598.JPG

Dale celebrates

Midway through the half and Glens brought on Conor Lynass for Ryan Borris and five minutes later Joe Andrew replaced Mick McCann.

Attacks down both flanks by Lynass on the right and then by McGill on the left were repelled. The clearance from the latter ended with Paul Cameron seeing red for an over the ball tackle on Moore. McKernon’s free kick was pushed wide for a corner-kick which was partially cleared but it wasn’t long before the ball was back in the Girvan box as the Glens pressed for a third goal.

On 75 minutes McGill made excellent progress down the left and threaded a great ball between two defenders to pick out Andrew in the box albeit with his back to goal and defender Adam Caldwell in close attention. In a flash Andrew turned the defender and lashed a low angled shot that was brilliantly by the feet of the keeper.

The 10 men of Girvan were still very much in the game and brought on striker Craig Harvey for defender Caldwell in an attempt to salvage a point.

aa_DSC_7764

In safe hands!

Play, although a bit scrappy, was now end-to-end with both sides rewarded with corner kicks for their endeavours. However, on 83 minutes it was a Scott Dinwoodie free kick from just outside the right-hand side of the penalty box that the home side almost claimed the equaliser but McDowall’s header brushed off the back of McAusland’s head and the ball bounced agonisingly inches wide of the post. McGarrity then clutched the corner-kick cleanly under his bar as Stevie O’Donnell challenged.

aa_goal03a

The next Girvan attack saw McKnight win another header at the back post and McAusland launching the loose ball upfield where it was gathered by Dallas on the right. The striker then rolled the ball back for McKernon to chip the ball over the Girvan defence freeing Marlow to beat the offside trap and run unimpeded to the bye-line before cutting the ball back for Joe Andrew to stroke it home from 3 yards out on 85 minutes.  The striker also ended up in the back of the net after being caught badly by the Johnstone; earning the keeper a yellow card.

The closing 5 minutes were played at 10-a-side as Andrew continued to receive treatment and the game ended with handshakes.

KILWINNING weathered a wave of Glens’ attacks while battling against a swirling wind before taking the lead. Chris Dallas and Darren McGill both had chances for the home side before Craig Pettigrew intercepted a Connor Lynass pass which was heading for Dallas.

But Buffs aren’t top of the league by accident and they showed why in 14 minutes with a goal in their first attack. Carlo Monti outpaced Ally Park on the left flank then sent in an inch-perfect pass which found Brian Boylan, who duly converted for 1-0.

Glens don’t like losing goals at home and they stormed back with Dallas setting up Mick McCann for a low shot which was well saved.

Boylan was caught offside in what looked like a tight decision, although there were no complaints from the player, more from the large visiting support. They had something to cheer about 10 minutes later when Adam Strain pulled off a magnificent save from a long-range Jamie McKernon effort.

Despite the wind, this was an enthralling encounter and Buffs were next to launch an attack which ended with a Michael Wardrope shot, from outside the area, just too high. He then got on the end of a sublime crossfield move involving Boylan and Monti, chipping keeper Brian McGarrity, but the ball ended up on the roof of the net.

Strain was called into action in the closing stages of the first half with a save to equal his earlier heroics, this time from a Lynass volley. With just one goal separating the teams, the next one was going to be crucial and Kilwinning started the second half strongly as they went in for the kill.

Having the strong wind behind them, they attempted to score from the kick-off but the ball sailed over. A Sam McCloskey shot failed to trouble McGarrity but he could only parry a Boylan effort, then almost lost a 50-50 to the hitman.

Mother Nature then had a hand in proceedings with a ball being caught in the wind giving Dallas an unexpected chance before a Monti corner was blown back out for a bye-kick. Sub Ryan Borris was involved within minutes of coming on, setting up Park, whose cross was blocked the combining well with fellow sub Dale Moore.

Glenafton Athletic squad (10)Borris went one better with a dangerous cross into the box which caused chaos among the defenders – who were also distracted by an overlapping Park. Moore’s shot blocked but Chris Dallas showed a striker’s instinct to pounce and level the scores with less than 20 minutes left.

Within a minute, Glens were down to 10 men when Alan Cairns was red-carded for dissent when he felt the referee should have played advantage.

Craig McEwan issued instructions from the sidelines and, as so often happens, the 10 men rallied. There were a few nervy moments, including a wind-assisted Ricky Hanvey shot and a brave save from McGarrity at the feet of substitute David Winters.

But Glens finished on top and were desperately unlucky when a Kyle McAusland free-kick found Dallas whose effort was just over the bar. One last chance fell for Wardrope who came close with a free-kick but the stalemate remained and it was a point apiece for two excellent teams.

GLENS TURN THE TIDE AGAINST SEASIDERS

A minute’s silence was held before kick-off in memory of Glenafton supporter Jim Walker who passed away recently. The Walker family sponsored today’s matchball and young grandson Trey handed over the cheque to manager Craig McEwan posed for photos with the manager and club secretary John Stewart.

aa_a_minutes_silence

Glenafton hosted Girvan for the second time this season the Seasiders having won the previous encounter 3-2 in the West of Scotland Cup after racing to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Back to league business and the champions turned the tables on the visitors with three unanswered goals in the opening forty-five which were joined with a last-minute counter to deliver a well-deserved 4-0 victory.

Girvan started brightly with former Glens striker Michael Reilly looking lively up front. On 7 minutes he began a move that ended with Kieran Balfour gathering the ball in the box to turn and shoot only for Kyle McAusland to make a fine block. The ball went out for a throw that was launched to the Glens near post where keeper Brian McGarrity leapt to cleanly clutch the ball from the head of Marc Cameron.

The game however quickly turned in the Glens favour. Conor Lynass and Ally Park combined well down the right-wing before the latter floated a cross to the near post where keeper Scott Johnstone was off his mark to gather the ball as Chris Dallas threatened. Joe Andrew threaded a ball through the middle for Dallas who quickly picked out Marlow at the edge of the box and after a touch or two his shot skewed wide of the post.

On 14 minutes the New Cumnock side made the breakthrough with a piece of fine flowing football on a bumpy pitch.  A long ball into the Glens box was headed cleared by Alan Cairns and snapped up by Darren McGill who set off down the left flank the after burners leaving the full back for dead on the half-way line. When level with the 18-yard line the midfielder squared the ball into the box which was dummied by Andrew to set up a low shot from Dallas from 14 yards out that was pushed away by the keeper only for the alert Andrew to pounce on the loose ball at the near post and clip it across the face of goal for the incoming Conor Lynass to side foot into the net at the back post.

aa_a_goal01.JPG

Conor Lynass and Chris Dallas

Glens continued to press and two minutes later a McGill free-kick from 22 yards whizzed inches wide of the post. Soon after Marlow picked up a Dallas pass in a busy box and curled a shot that the keeper did well to hold.

On 19 minutes Girvan created their best chance after Jack McDowall whipped a great ball from wide on the left to the back post where Craig Reid’s header just dipped over the bar.

McDowall’s header dips over the bar

The home side were soon back on the front foot and midway through the half a Marlow header from a Jamie McKernon corner was headed of the line and over the bar by Scott Dinwoodie. From a short corner McKernon played a quick one-two with Andrew before returning the ball to the striker on the edge of the box about 15 yards from the bye-line and in a flash, Andrew turned to fire a powerful shot that caught the keeper unaware at his near post. Glen 2-0 on 24 minutes.

Celebrations after Joe makes it 2-0

The visitors responded through McDowall and Reid combing again the latter’s header causing a goal-mouth scramble in which Craig Menzies & McAusland got the better of Dinwoodie & Reilly and McGarrity gathered the loose ball. This proved to be Reilly’s last real action in the game as soon after he earned a straight red card for dissent and the Seasiders reduced to 10 men on 27 minutes.

Things went from bad to worse for Girvan two minutes later after the Glens added a third goal. McGill snapped up the ball on the left before cutting infield to ‘D’ of the penalty box to slip the ball to Lynass on the right-hand side of the box. The midfielder’s shot for goal deflected off the outstretched leg of Darren Mitchell sending the ball high into the air before dropping kindly for Chris Dallas at the back post to guide home his 20th goal of the season from close range.

aa_a_goal03

Chris Dallas makes it 3-0

One-way traffic towards the Girvan goal ensued with chances to add a fourth coming thick and fast. On 31 minutes Park’s angled shot from the right-hand side of the box cannoned off the base of the far post. Johnstone then punched clear McKernon’s corner-kick from the head of Marlow. A minute later Marlow’s low drive from the 18-yard line drifted wide of the post and soon after Marlow’s third bite at the cherry, a powerful shot from outside the box was well held by the keeper.

In a rare Girvan attack a well-timed and executed tackle by McAusland denied Cameron a clear shot at goal.

H/T Glens 3 Girvan 0

At the break Stevie O’Donnell replaced Kieran Balfour and slotted into the centre of defence with Mitchell now pushed forward. 10 men Girvan regained their composure and play in the early stages of the new half flowed from end to end with defences dealing well with the half chances on offer.

aa_DSC_6159.JPG

Conor Lynass

McDowall’s shot was parried by McGarrity and the keeper was quick off the mark to recover the ball before ending in the net. McKernon’s determined run into the box was halted by an equally determined well-timed tackle by Michael Mossie. McKernon tried again with another strong burst into the box and his square ball for Dallas seemed certain to set up a fourth goal only for Mossie to intervene again and cut out the pass at the expense of another corner-kick for the home side which was headed clear. At the other end Mitchell picked out McDowall but his shot, although on target lacked any power to test the keeper.

On 58 minutes Lynass’s run from deep ended with a pass to Dallas who gave Mossie the slip before thundering a shot from the edge of the box that beat the keeper at full stretch before zipping past the post.

On the hour mark the Glens made a double change with Andrew and McGill making way for Mick McCann and Dale Moore. Soon after Ryan McChesney replaced Ally Park with McAusland now filling the right full back slot.  Girvan followed suit with Paul Cameron coming on for Marc Cameron.

aa_DSC_6237.JPG

Darren McGill

On 72 minutes McDowall and Mitchell combined well down the left before the latter burst into the box and although he stumbled he kept his feet but the chance had gone while delayed claim for a spot kick, for a push in the back, was waved away.

The lively Lynass then leathered a powerful shot from outside the box which was pushed round the post Johnstone.  Although this sparked a sustained spell of pressure for the hosts the Girvan defence stood firm.  At the other end McDowall cut in from the left to curl a shot just wide of the post.

The Glens dominated the dying embers of the game. Moore beat the offside trap to earn himself a free run into the box only to lose his footing on the bumpy surface as he closed in on goal. McAusland’s perseverance won the Glens a corner-kick which was headed out of the box to be met with Moore and his well struck first time daisy-cutter was well held by the keeper.

aa_DSC_6457.JPG

Cameron Marlow and Andrew Hunter

With two minutes to go McKernon forced his way into the box and shot from 12 yards crashed off he crossbar and Moore’s acrobatic attempt to bury the rebound was bravely blocked by former Glens defender Andrew Hunter before McKernon then tried again, but his shot slipped wide of the target.

On 90 minutes Girvan’s hopes of a consolation goal were dashed when McGarrity promptly plucked Mossie’s header from a corner kick out of the air. Glenafton however had the last say and McGarrity’s clearance upfield was pounced on by Lynass and after pushing forward whipped a peach of a ball across the goal for Moore to bullet home a header from 4 yards out.

Good luck Davie

Glenafton manager Craig McEwan and David Gray have mutually agreed that Davie  be given a free transfer to allow him the opportunity to get more playing time.  The Glenafton management & committee wishes David every success with his next club and thank him for his contribution to Glens winning the treble of Western Premier Division title, Scottish Junior Cup and the Evening Times Champions cup.

Glenafton Athletic squad (4)

David signed for the Glens in January 2016 and scored his first goal for the club the following month in a 5-1 win at Benburb in the West of Scotland Cup with a stunning free-kick from 25 yards out.

The following season it was another spectacular free kick from David that drew the Glens level away at Broxburn in the Scottish Junior Cup 1st round .  The home side hit back to take a 3-1 lead and Glens looked to be out of the competition as they trailed by that scoreline and were down to 10 men as the game went into its final minute.  Joe Andrew gave the Glens a glimmer of hope to make it 3-2 on 90 minutes and then unbelievably on 93 minutes David floated a free kick into a crowded box for Kyle McAusland to head home the equaliser.  The rest is history as Glenafton went on to win the Scottish Junior Cup with David scoring four goals in the competition.

Celebrations as Glens make it 3-3 on 93 minutes

David scored 3 league goals and 11 cup goals to finish second top goal scorer; 2 goals behind top scorer Chris Dallas. His final goal of the season came at  Benburb’s ground again with another cracking free kick as Glens defeated Glasgow Perthshire in the Evening Times Champions Cup final.

As West Region Premier Champions and Scottish Junior Cup Winners Glenafton gained entry into the William Hill Scottish Cup. In their first game in the ‘big Scottish’ for the first time in the club’s history they defeated  Newton Stewart 6-0 in Preliminary Round 1, and fittingly among the goals was a David Gray free-kick.

Reigning Premier Division champions Glenafton and league leaders Kilwinning shared the points at a rain-sodden Abbey Park in a game short of clear-cut chances but full of endeavour in difficult conditions.

The Buffs enjoyed some early pressure forcing the Glens central defenders into a couple of ‘close-shave’ pass backs that saw keeper Brian McGarrity keep a cool head to clear both quickly. On 10 minutes the home side won a corner-kick after Sam McCloskey’s cross from wide on the left was headed over the bar by Craig Menzies as Brian Boylan threatened. The kick, taken by former Glens midfielder Mick Wardrope, was partially cleared to the outskirts of the box only for Boylan to recover the ball and then to lose it again after a well-timed slide tackle by Menzies.

aa_a_RyanMcChesney_BrianBoylan

Ryan McChesney and Brian Boylan

A quick break down the right by Glens concluding with Conor Lynass cut-back from the bye-line stirred up a stramash in the six-yard box with the ball taken from the toes of Ally Park and then recovered by Chris Dallas before Tommy Maitland cleared for the Buffs. Within 30 seconds however the visitors were on the attack again. Brian McGarrity launched the ball upfield which was headed on by Dallas only to be intercepted by James Latta, however his weak header back to his keeper was pounced on by Mick McCann who was then brought down by his former Talbot team-mate as he tried to make amends for his error. Latta was shown a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity and

Chris Dallas sent Adam Strain the wrong way as he slotted home the spot kick to put the Glens ahead on 14 minutes.

aa_a_goal01

Back came the Buffs through Boylan winning a corner-kick, after another fine tackle from Menzies, which was punched to safety by McGarrity.

The game then slipped into a scrappy period with play bogged down in the middle of the park and possession quickly lost if there was touch too many was taken or a pass then went astray as the pitch became heavier with the constant rain.

On 26 minutes Strain ventured well off his line to make a clearance only to get into a fankle giving Dallas time to close in, nick the ball and round the keeper before Strain got his wits back to dive at the striker’s feet and recapture the ball.

Boylan then broke down the right to the bye-line and with his route to goal blocked by Alan Cairns he elected to slip a pass to Wardrope but in stepped Menzies to clear the danger again.  Buffs continued to press through Ben Lewis down the right who curled a wicked ball to the far post for the incoming Boylan only for McAusland to intercept at the expense of a corner kick which was headed clear by Park.

aa_a_TommyMaitland_MickMcCann

Tommy Maitland and Mick McCann

Ten minutes from the break Glens responded through Dallas down the right forcing his way to the bye-line where his cut-back for McCann was cut-out by Maitland for a corner-kick which was followed by two other corners in quick succession as Buffs cleared their decks. The 11 men continued to press for a second goal and earned yet another corner-kick which eventually fell for Park only for his shot be blocked in a packed box as was McChesney’s attempt at the rebound.

With the half drawing to a close Rickey Hanvey tried to fashion a equaliser with a shot from 25 yards out but the ball swerved harmlessly wide of target. At the other end he tripped McKernon on the outskirts of the box but the Buffs wall took the brunt of McAusland’s free kick in all but the last action of the half.

HT Kilwinning 0 Glens 1

Within two minutes of the restart the Glens won another corner after McKernon’s attempted chip to the back post cannoned off Lewis and despite Strain’s valiant attempt he couldn’t prevent the ball crossing the line. The kick was cleared upfield but back came Glens and Dale Moore’s run down the left-wing was brought to an abrupt end resulting in a free-kick floated in the six-yard box that was cut-out by Maitland with Dallas sliding in at the back post.

On 50 minutes McCann was first to react to snap up a headed clearance before pushing forward to drill a shot that sailed over the bar. Glens were seeing a lot of the ball without however testing keeper Strain.

The Buffs gradually came back into the game and created a couple of decent chances in quick succession. Wardrope on the left slipped the ball inside to Carlo Monti who struck the ball sweetly in his stride from 22 yards only for McChesney outstretched leg diverting the ball wide for a corner kick which was over hit and the danger over momentarily. Boylan gathered the ball in the centre circle and chipped a great ball for Wardrope to chase into the box however no sooner had he taken a touch the backtracking McChesney stole the ball from his toes.

At the other end McKernon over hit a free-kick seemingly straight into the keeper’s hands but although he spilled the ball he quickly dived on it to prevent Dallas prodding it home. Not only that, Strain’s long clearance upfield saw the ball eventually fall for Sam McLoskey wide on left to whip a vicious ball into the box for the incoming Lewis only for Cairns’ attempt to block the ball see it end up in the back of his own net, levelling the match on 59 minutes.

Two minutes later Monti’s free kick into the box was headed over the bar by Maitland.

Glenafton brought on Darren McGill for Conor Lynass and the midfielder was soon in the thick of the action. McCann chased down Dallas’s headed knock down to burst into the box and hit a low angled shot that was blocked by the foot of advancing Strain sending the ball to the outskirts of the box where it was met by McGill his shot drifted well wide of the post.

Back came Glens and McCann did brilliantly to break free from the arms of Maitland to slip a superb pass for Dallas to pick up the ball at the edge box and with the indefatigable Maitland closing in the striker cracked a stinging shot from 17 yards that although the ball beat the keeper it swerved wide of the far post.

Glenafton then changed to three up front with striker Joe Andrew coming on for Dale Moore. However, a change of plan quickly transpired after McChesney was shown a straight red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity after impeding Monti’s run into the box. 1-1 and 10 aside with 74 minutes. Monti then fired the free-kick from 22 yards high over the bar. Soon after Glens reverted to two up front with the tireless Mick McCann making way for Ryan Borris while Buffs brought on David Winters for Brian Boylan.

With ten minutes to go McKernon lasered a free kick into the box which was trapped by Dallas and rolled back out for Park to thunder a low drive which although looking to go wide was angled towards goal by Andrew only for the alert Strain to get down low and push the ball away with both hands before diving on the loose ball.

Buffs made their last change with Rick Hanvey hobbling off.

It’s off the post.

With three minutes of regulation time remaining Kilwinning came close to claiming all three points when Maitland’s header from a corner kick crashed off the post.

A Glens corner kick was headed clear in added time and in what was all but that last action of the match McGill’s free kick from 25 yards was clutched comfortably by Strain.

  • McBookie West Region Super League Premier Division
  • Match 07
  • Loch Park, New Cumnock
  • Saturday 6th January 2018
  • GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 0 (0)
  • AUCHINLECK TALBOT 1 (0)

A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off in the memory of Jackie Scarlett who passed away last Saturday, aged 88 years old.  A well-known figure in Ayrshire Junior football he played a leading role in turning the fortunes of Whitletts Victoria around in the 1970s when the club seem destined to fold.  Of course he will also be remembered fo sponsoring the Ayrshire Sectional League Cup known as the Jackie Scarlett Cup in honour of his father of the same name.

Auchinleck Talbot were first footers at Loch Park in the first game of the New Year and were quickly on the front foot forcing back-to-back corner from attacks down both flanks.

Glens responded with a fine through ball from McCann for Chris Dallas to chase but the striker lost out to the alert Andy Leishman as the keeper raced 10 yards out of his box to boot the ball clear. Soon after the keeper got down low to cut out Dallas’s cross from wide on the right aimed for Ryan Borris in the six-yard box.

At the other end Stephen Wilson’s fine run down the right flank saw him progress to the bye-line only for his cut-back for brother Graham to be  cleared by Craig Menzies at the near post. The visitors recovered the ball and play switched to the left where former Glenafton U19’s player Klark Thomson gathered the ball and engineered an angled shot at goal that was well held by Brian McGarrity. The keeper also made light work of a close- range header by Graham Wilson from another Jamie Glasgow cross.

Although play continued to ebb and flow, albeit interrupted by niggly fouls from both sides, clear cut chances were thinner on the ground than the layer of Loch Park frost that had melted away in the January sunshine as defences were well on top.

On 20 minutes Jamie McKernon broke down another Talbot attack deep in his own half and picked out Borris who quickly found Davie Gray who gave a clutch of Talbot midfielders the slip before threading a ball through the middle destined for McCann’s run into the box only for defender Neil McPherson to intercept in the nick of time.

The visitors counter-attack came within a whisker of breaking the deadlock after Graham Wilson broke down the left and floated a killer cross to the back post where Glasgow leapt of one foot to guide the ball with the other past McGarrity covering the near post only for it to hit off the knee of Ryan McChesney and roll along the goal line to be gathered by the keeper re-emerging from the back of the net.

Back came Glens and their pressure resulted in another couple of free kicks in good positions one of which on 24 minutes earned a yellow card for Gordon Pope. Gray’s chip into the box was only partially cleared and snapped up by Borris to return the ball into the busy box to be headed on by McCann and Gray to meet the ball on the drop and fire his shot into the side-netting.

Five minutes later Gray’s free-kick from just inside the Talbot half was won in the air by McChesney but his header drifted wide of the post which was well covered by Leishman in any case. Five minutes after that the keeper must have had a flashback to the Scottish Junior Cup Final in June when defender Alan Cairns opted to shoot from 35 yards out however on his occasion the ball sailed over the bar.

On 39 minutes Kyle McAusland breaking down the right joined Pope in the book after a tussle with the Talbot defender. Leishman launched the free-kick upfield and the ball eventually fell for Graham Wilson in the box and with Ally Park closing him down he slipped the ball to brother Stephen to shoot from 12 yards but McChesney got in a great block. McKernon picked up the loose ball and released Borris to break forward and feed McCann to edge into the box with Dallas support only for McPherson to time his tackle perfectly and steal the ball.

Menzies broke up Talbot’s counter on the half-way line and then with the ball glued to his feet forged his way forward through the outer lines of defence before clipping the ball into the box for McCann to chase but by time he forced the save from Leishman the offside flag had been raised. In the last action of the half Menzies was back at the heart of the defence to mop up a free-kick floated into the Glens box.

The pattern of the second half soon mimicked that of the first with play moving from end to end. Glasgow on the right picked out Graham Wilson but his powerful header, which  pulled off a point-blank save from McGarrity, was from a offside position.

McKernon’s peach of a pass, through the middle, enabled Dallas to get the jump on Ross Harvey 10 yards inside the Talbot half and head for the Talbot box.  With the defender hot on his heels and Leishman advancing to the edge of his six-yard box the striker scooped his shot from 12 yards out over Leishman standing tall and over the bar.

At the other end on 53 minutes Stephen Wilson from the right picked out Dwayne Hyslop in the box but his shot lacked power to test McGarrity. From the half way line Pope lofted a perfectly weighted ball over the Glens defence for Graham Wilson to gather and tee up a shot at goal only for Cairns to execute a well-timed block.

On 57 minutes the Glens reshuffled the midfield with Dale Moore and Darren McGill replacing Ryan Borris and Davie Gray. Five minutes later Talbot made a change up front with Graham Wilson making way for Sean McIlroy.

Back to the action and White weaved his way deep into the left hand-side of the box and from within a pocket of Glens defenders managed to manufacture a low angled shot that saw McGarrity drop to his knees to  gather the ball at the base of the near post.

Back came Glens and  when there was no way through a packed box for Dallas he slipped the ball to Moore wide on the right to whip a vicious ball across the face of goal that Leishman managed to punch away at the back post and then block McGill’s attempt to drive home the loose ball. Another good run from Moore ended on the edge of box with a timely tackle from Pope.

The visitors then enjoyed a good spell of pressure with a couple of corner kicks that came to nothing.

Controversy on 74 minutes when Harvey grabbed a fistful of the back of Dallas’s shirt in the box. The defender earned a yellow card but was very fortunate a spot kick didn’t follow as the referee placed the ball a good two yards outside the box for the free-kick which was blasted into the wall and cleared.

Two minutes later Talbot brought on Mark Shankland for Klark Thomson who can be pleased with his performance on his return to Loch Park.

On 80 minutes McPherson’s headed clearance from a McAusland cross into the box fell for Park on the 18-yard line and the former Talbot midfielder struck the ball swift and sweetly sending it whistling inches wide of the post with Leishman late to see it.

Talbot countered through Glasgow slipping the ball to Shankland on the outskirts of the box and although he curled his shot past McAusland it lacked the direction and power to threaten McGarrity.

McGill wide on the left lofted the ball deep into the Talbot where Moore darted into the space between Pope and Harvey to stretch out a leg only to guide the ball away from goal much to the relief Leishman.

Shankland snapped up Glasgow’s header in the box but was forced wide by McAusland before whipping the ball to the back post where it was headed clear by Cairns. Pope then picked out Hyslop in the box but with McChesney and Park between him and goal he turned and scooped his shot over the bar.

Although play continued to flow back and forth Talbot’s attacks had a more menacing edge. On 80 minutes Stephen Wilson switched play from the right to Shankland on the left hand and Menzies slid in to cut out his cross as Talbot players flooded into the box. McAusland headed the resulting corner-kick out of the box and Harvey gathered it on the right to float a great cross to the back post where Hyslop headed it across the face of goal and McIlroy seemed certain to bulge the net with a close range header only for Park to head the ball off the line.

The visitors pressure finally paid off two minutes when Dwayne Hyslop headed home Pope pinpoint cross from the left to the back post.

On 90 minutes Glens won their first corner kick of the match, after Pope’s tackle robbed Moore of the ball deep in the box, which Leishman clutched cleanly out of the air.

Three minutes of added time came and went and the game finished with a 1-0 scoreline as had the two other meetings between the sided this season.
