Super League 1st Division

HURLFORD UNITED 0 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 (1)

Glenafton maintained their unbeaten league record with a narrow win over Hurlford in a game that started of at a fierce pace, but had by the second half developed into a dour struggle unbecoming of the sumptuous sunshine that bathed Blair Park. Nevertheless the victory lifts the Loch Park side to second place in the league leaving them with a game in hand over and two points behind league leaders Ardrossan Winton Rovers, who defeated Dalry in the only other Super First fixture today.

Paul Murphy

Paul Murphy, loan signing from Stranraer, made his debut for the Glens partnering Cammy Menzies at the heart of the visitors’ defence, who also had Lewis Sloan back in the starting eleven having missed the last two league games.

The early exchanges saw play rage from end to end as both sides built attacks from defence moving the ball at pace from box to box. Perhaps the slickest of these moves was engineered by the Glens as early as the fourth minute when a Gareth Armstrong head flick was gathered by Gareth Campbell just inside the box and instantly rolled back out to Paul McKenzie whose snapshot went just wide of keeper Davie Markey’s right hand post. On 14 minutes a ball in from the left flank caught Glenafton’s defence flat-footed and Ally Semple did well to get down low to push the ball wide for a corner kick, which was mopped up safely as the rearguard redeemed themselves. Ten minutes later with the visitors on the offensive again a loud shout for a Hurlford hand ball on the half-way line from an Andy Bell through-ball was waved away by the referee. The home side , however,  failed to make most of the reprieve and Gareth Armstrong capitalised on a defensive error and won the race to gather the loose ball on the 18 yard line and lob it over the head of the onrushing Markey into the gaping net. Celebrations were subdued as the striker, who had looked out of sorts, left the field of play to loud applause from the travelling support, to be replaced by Steven Greenlees. Murphy made way for the big defender and moved into a central midfield role, with Sloan joining Campbell up front.

Gareth Campbell congratulates Bo

The goal heralded a change in tactics from Hurlford and their passing play was usurped by a more direct route to goal with the disadvantage that possession was typically surrendered more readily and thereby the Glens having much more of the ball. That is not to say the home side didn’t have their moments and none more so than on the half hour mark when a Jamie Wilson header was inches wide of target. Markey, once on Kilmarnock’s books, was the busiest of both keepers being tested by Sloan from distance and then he denied McKenzie twice in the closing five minutes of the half. H/T Hurlford 0 Glens 1

Hurlford started the new half brightly and turned the tables in terms of possession but fairly quickly the game deteriorated into a dour struggle, littered with fouls, few of which yielded set pieces executed with any real potency. The first decent post-interval chance came on 66 minutes when a scramble in the Glens box ended with Semple bravely blocking a close range effort from substitute Ryan Jordan. Five minutes later the impressive Mark Doolan tried from further out but his blistering shot went just over Semple’s fingertips and the bar. At the other end the Glens’ were often let down by the final ball into the box and a ‘killer’ second goal seemed as unlikely as that as a leveller from their opponents. That was until the 90th minute of the game when former Glenafton player Aaron Scoular was fouled in the box by Steven Greenlees and a penalty kick awarded to the home side. Up stepped Robert McPhee and struck the ball firmly to Semple’s right only for the keeper to dive at full stretch and push it past the post. The danger was far from over and the visitors scrambled the first corner clear at the expense of the other, which proved to be less threatening. Further drama at the other end of Blair Park when Gareth Campbell received a second yellow card for his attempt to block a kick out from the home keeper, an attempt to which Markey appeared oblivious and unperturbed, but off went the Glens’ striker and so too the final whistle some forty seconds later. Hurlford v Glenafton

Super League 1st Division

Sat 24th September Blair Park, Hurlford KO 2pm

HURLFORD UNITED v GLENAFTON ATHLETIC

Sixth placed Hurlford host fourth placed Glenafton in one of only two league fixtures in the Super League 1st Division this week-end, as the ‘Glasgow’ September week-end impacts on the card. Both sides were idle during last week’s  ‘Ayrshire’ September week-end and were mere spectators as Kilsyth replaced East Kilbride in second place with a fine 3-1 win over the new town jags. Shotts too fired up the league into 5th place with a narrow 2-1 home win over Lanark United, while Winton Rovers remained top thanks to a well-earned point in a 3-3 draw at Whitletts. The Glens travel to Blair Park as the only unbeaten side in the league and a 100% away record (3 wins out of 3 ) while the ‘Ford have a 100% home record (2 wins out if 2) … so something has to give at Blair Park. In the other league fixture Dalry, buoyed by their win over Shotts a fortnight ago entertain the entertaining league leaders.

First and Last

First Glens player to score against Hurlford at Loch Park

Hurlford United , along with Muirkirk Juniors, were  accepted into the Western League in summer of 1938 increasing the membership to twenty clubs.  The first meeting between Hurlford and the Glens took place at Blair Park in mid August when a double from summer-signing 16 year-old McIntyre (Crosshouse Waverly) helped the visitors to a 3-2 win and keep them  top of the league after six games. Before the month was out Hurlford turned the table beating the Glens by the odd goal in seven in the 1st round of the Western League Cup at Connel Park. The New Cumnock side exacted some revenge in the league with a 5-1 victory at Connel Park in April 1939, a game notable for taking the Glens league goal tally beyond the 100 goals (104 goals from 31 games).

Hurlford’s first visit to Loch Park was for a Western League (South Section) game on 3rd December 1960 to face table topping Glens  (having won 9 of their 10 league games). However the game was abandoned after only 10 minutes due to the wintry weather. Hurlford returned to Loch Park on the 14th January 1961 and lost out 3-1 in a Vernon Trophy first round tie, Billy Moffat scoring a double that day. The abandoned league game was never replayed since by the end of the season the Glens were ‘uncatchable’ at the top of the South Section.

Bo opens the scoring at Blair Park

Last season the two sides shared the points in a keenly contested 1-1 draw at Blair Park. Gareth Armstrong giving the visitors an early lead before Andy Stevenson drew the sides level from the penalty spot, just before the hour mark. The return match at Loch Park proved, in the end, to be a little more one-sided with three unanswered goals from Jim Wilson, Gareth Armstrong and Paul McKenzie helping to secure three points for the home side.

Former Afton Lad

After two seasons and over 40 appearances for Glenafton midfielder Aaron Scoular left Loch Park and moved to Blair Park in the summer. His work-rate and enthusiasm earned ‘Scolesy’ great respect from the home support and in his club tally of three goals there were a couple of real crackers – including candidate for goal of the season at Vale of Clyde.

Jim and Cammy leave Loch Park

Transfer listed striker Jim Wilson has left the club and joined Super League 1st Division side Whitletts Victoria. Jim joined Glenafton from Annbank United at the start of last season and scored on his debut away at Kello Rovers in an Ardagh Cup sectional match. Jim’s last Glens’ goal came in the recent 2-2 home league draw with ……Whitletts Vics.

Central defender Cameron McKinnell had recently indicated his desire to leave the club to play for his local side Troon.  The manager and club tried to persuade Cammy to stay to no avail and reluctantly agreed to his request. Cammy made 8 appearances for the Glens since his summer signing from Dalry and scored a crucial winning goal as 9 men Glens defeated Renfrew 3-2  at Western Park.

Glenafton would like to thank Jim and Cammy and wish them all the best at their new clubs.

Cashy opens his account

New signing Ian Cashmore opened his account for Glenafton with a goal from the penalty spot in the 4-3 win at league leaders Ardrossan Winton Rovers on Saturday. He turned out for the Glens the week before in the 2-2 home draw with Thorniewood . Ardrossan 3 Glenafton 4

Super League 1st Division

Sat 10th September Winton Park, Ardrossan KO 2pm

Glenafton with captain Robbie Henderson and Kris Mitchell unavailable for selection and playmaker Lewis Sloan out through injury made a number of changes from the side that drew at home with Thorniewood last week-end. In came Cammy McKinnell and Craig Menzies at the centre of defence while Gareth Campbell returned from suspension to join Gareth Armstrong and recent signing Ian Cashmore in a forward-thinking formation in more ways than one, as the Glens looked to do what others had not managed thus far – take a point of more from league leaders Ardrossan Winton Rovers.

Bo bagged a brace

Despite a lively start from the visitors the home side quickly served noticed  of their intent to maintain their 100% league record when in five minutes a fine passage of flowing football ended with Graham Muir’s shot being deflected past keeper Ally Semple. Ten minutes later and the Glens pressure caused panic in the Winton box forcing defender to haul down attacker and up stepped Gareth Armstrong to level matters from the penalty spot. Play ebbed back and forth like the Arran ferry, only a wee bit quicker, as both sides seemed determined not to settle for a share of the points. On 34 minutes Winton restored their lead with another clinical finish to an excellent move, Graeme Hamilton heading home from close range an Andy Boyle cross from the dead-ball line. A minute from the break and the teams were level again. The visitors were awarded a free-kick some 30 yards from goal and Gareth Armstrong, not for the first time this season, rifled an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. With the home guard looking vulnerable Glens continued to push forward and won another penalty on the stroke of half-time. Gareth Campbell’s spot-kick crashed off the post and his attempt to head the rebound home struck the other post; of course the goal would not have stood if the rebound had found the net, the ball bot having been played by an opponent. A Southy Scorcher

Four first half goals were soon joined by the first of the second period and what a goal too. More picture book than text book passing as the Glens moved the ball swiftly and sweetly about their mesmerised opponents, who were quickly brought of their trance by the away roars of appreciation as Craig McEwan raced into the Rovers’ box and blasted the ball into the rigging beyond keeper Kenny Pollock. A special goal from Southy in a sombre week for family and friends. Having taken the lead for the first time in the match the visitors looked in determined mood not to relinquish it and indeed seemed the more likely of the two sides to add to their tally, the contribution of Ian Cashmore particularly noteworthy.

Cashy opens his account

Midway through the half Paul McKenzie flew down the left flank and as he burst into the box he was hauled down without ceremony to earn Glenafton their third penalty of the match. Ian Cashmore, took on the mantle of penalty taker – also the third of the match – and gave Pollock no chance, as he doubled the Glens lead. Minutes later McEwan rampaged into the Rovers box and melted one of the metalwork as the Glens domination continued unabated.

The visitors made good use of substitutions with Steven Greenlees, Ryan McChesney and Jim Wilson providing the fresh legs and helping to break up any fluidity in the home side’s play.  However deep into injury time the tricky Stephen Reid reduced the leeway but there was no time left for a Rover’s return and Glenafton deservedly headed south with all three points. Ardrossan v Glenafton

Super League 1st Division

Sat 10th September Winton Park, Ardrossan KO 2pm

ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS v GLENAFTON ATHLETIC

Top goalscorer Gareth Armstrong

Glenafton travel to the North Ayrshire coast to face league leaders Ardrossan Winton Rovers in the first West Region league clash between the two sides. Lewis Sloan, who has returned from holiday,  Gareth Armstrong  having completed his three match suspension and striker Ian Cashmore will all be in contention to partner leading goalscorer Gareth Armstrong up front .  On the down side captain Robbie Henderson will be unavailable for selection as he heads for a wedding in London.

Derek Frye’s Winton Rovers , the newly promoted Ayrshire District Champions, are the talk of the terracing following their stunning start to the season beginning with an impressive Ardagh Glass Sectional league cup campaign. In arguably the toughest section of the competition, with three  Premier sides in the group of five, Winton finished runners-up and narrowly lost out to Premier champions Irvine Meadow in a quarter-final penalty shoot-out, after a fantastic four-all draw. Gutted Graeme Hamilton, now in his fourth season with Rovers having joined them from the renowned Clark Drive Amateurs, had the consolation of scoring hat-trick at Meadow Park.

Of course it is the Rovers league form that has caught the eye, four wins out of four, the most recent an eye-watering  8-0 gubbing of Girvan at Hamilton Park, albeit their fellow seasiders finished the match with 8 men. Striker Stephen Reid, summer-signing from Renfrew, bagged a hat-trick to take his season-so-far tally to 8 goals.

First and Last Meetings

The First: The two clubs first met in the historic season of 1933/34 when North Ayrshire clubs finally succumbed to their southern cousins – Glenafton, Kello Rovers and Auchinleck Talbot – and allowed them entry into prestigious Western League. Rovers came out on top by the odd goal in three at Winton Park and when the two sides met late in the season in the corresponding fixture at Connel Park both they and Kilwinning Rangers were challenging for the league title.  The day before the showdown with Winton, the Glens drew 1-1 with the Buffs in the semi-final of the Ayrshire Consolation Cup at Somerset Park and this appears have taken toll for after going two up, goals from Barney Jackson and Willie Ferguson, the Rovers hit back with three of their own to seal the points. The Glens had to settle for 3rd place in the league, five points behind equal top Ardrossan and Kilwinning. In a play-off decider ‘Winton won the West’ beating the Buffs 2-0 at Recreation Park, Stevenston to round off a great year the club having won the Ayrshire Cup and reaching the semi-final of the Scottish Junior Cup final. The following season the Glens completed the league double over Winton on their way to becoming the first south Ayrshire side to be crowned Western League Champions.

The Last: The two clubs last met in the pre-season Joe Meldrum Trophy  on 3rd August, 2008 at Loch Park. Glens’ goals from trialist Craig Seenan, Paul McMullan and a double from Dougie Ramsay, either side of a Winton counter put the home side into a seemingly unassailable 4-1 lead at the break. However, the visitors punished some defensive lapses by the Glens and hit back with two second half goals. Indeed only a fine save by Chris Fahey and then the woodwork prevented the North Ayrshire side from bagging a deserved equaliser. The Glens held on to their lead and to the JMT Trophy.
