Good luck Aaron

AaronConnollyEveryone at Glenafton  Athletic would like to wish Aaron Connolly all the best as he moves on to a new club at the end of the season. He has signed a two-year deal with Lowland League side Broomhill Sports Club (BSC) based at Maryhill’s Lochburn Park.

The striker joined the Glens under Tommy Bryce two seasons ago and played a huge part in the run to the Scottish Junior Cup final last season and in the club winning the Ardagh Glass Sectional League Cup this season.

Aaron’s goal celebrations are legendary at Loch Park, and they come through plenty of practice. He finished top goalscorer at Glenafton last season with 19 goals and overall he has found the net 35 times in 65 appearances over the two seasons. It is difficult to pick out a favourite. The free-kick in the Scottish against Shotts last season was class and of course the place went wild when he scored against his former club Cumnock in the quarter-final replay and what about the screamer this season in the lashing rain against Shotts – unforgettable!  Thank you Aaron and good luck at your new club.

Aaron Connolly scores what proves to be the winner.

Jambo quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite with his tenacious style of play, his eye for and execution of the inch perfect pass and a thunderbolt of a shot. He made 70 appearances for Glenafton and he has bagged 9 goals including that memorable one against Musselburgh in last season’s Scottish Junior Cup final. Jamie’s performance in this season’s Ardagh Sectional Cup Final win over Auchinleck Talbot where he ‘bossed’ the midfield, a performance that earned him ‘Man-of-the-Match’ epitomised his time with Glenafton. Thank you Jamie and good luck at your new club.

For Kris #aftonarmy

Glenafton made a couple of changes to the team the started in the victory at Arthurlie last week with Chris Meikle and Aaron Connolly replacing Craig Menzies and Alain Kinney who were both unavailable for selection. The home side kicked off with a strong gusting wind at their back and were first to show with a Daniel Orsi shot from outside the box forcing an early save from keeper Adam Strain.

Aaron Connolly and John Sheridan

Another half chance came and went for the Glens before Beith took the lead on 8 minutes with a peach of a goal. The visitors pushed forward through the middle with a string of telling passes before the ball fell for Darren Christie on the outskirts of the box and after a twist and a turned he lobbed the ball over keeper Brian McGarrity at full stretch and into the corner of the net.

Beith take the lead

Beith take the lead

The home side came within a whisker of drawing level after Orsi danced deep into the box and his squared ball missed the foot of Darren McGill by the length of a toe-nail. Orsi was soon on the move again and had John Sheridan in a spin in the box as he skipped past him on his way to the bye line only for Kevin MacDonald to block the cut back for the incoming Connolly. The resulting corner was met by Jamie Hay only for his drive from 15 yards to scream over the bar. On 14 minutes McKernon’s short-corner to Michael Wardrope was chipped into the box and although the ball was won in the air by Ryan McChesney the header lacked direction to test the keeper. Another corner quickly followed and Meikle out-jumped Wilson only for his header to loop over the bar. Strain sprinted out his box to beat McGill to the chase for a long through ball. The home side continued to press and Hay won another midfield duel to find McKernon who fended off Joe Bradley before whipping a wicked ball across the face of goal where Zander Ryan did enough to prevent McGill from connecting.

Dan Orsi and Gary Wilson

Dan Orsi and Gary Wilson

Beith did battle their way upfield against the ferocious wind on but the attacks lacked the puff to test McGarrity. His counterpart continued to show a safe pair of hands and after clutching a header from McGill and soon after a shot from the lively Orsi, after he had skilfully slalomed his way past a static line of defenders. At the other end Nikki Docherty’s angled shot was blocked by McGarrity and cleared by McChesney as Andy Reid prepared to pounce.

Ten minutes before the break Connolly was up-ended on the outskirts of the box. His free-kick crashed off the cross bar and with his keeper in the back of the net Wilson scrambled the ball out for a corner as Orsi threatened. McKernon’s kick was won by an unchallenged McChesney but the big defender’s header was again well off target. McKernon , from 30 yards out, lasered a free-kick inches wide of the post , albeit the diving Strain appeared to have his goal well covered. H/T Glens 0 Beith 1

After the half-time oranges Beith, now with the wind at their back, were quickly on the front foot and giving the home defence food for thought with Ryan overlapping down the right and Bradley wriggling down the left providing options for breaking into the Glens’ box. Hay’s timely tackle on Docherty prevented further damage before McGarritty cleanly clutched a corner, won after Reid and Bradley had combined well. Strain matched this at the other end when he plucked an Orsi cross out of the air.

Brian McGarrity

Brian McGarrity

A blow for the home side just before the hour mark when McChesney failed to recover from an earlier knock. On came Craig McGuffie with Orsi dropping to right back while Jamie McGeoghegan, captain for the day, moved into the centre of defence.

The visitors continued to press and Reid rifled a free kick from 30 yards and the ball bulleted inches wide of the post beyond the reach of the air-borne McGarrity. Some respite for the home side and Alan Cairns free-kick from tight on the left found the head of Orsi at the back post only for his knock-down into the six yard box to be mopped up by the Mighty defence.

The Glens’ goal then survived a two minute onslaught. McGarrity got down low to push another low angled drive by the impressive Docherty past the post. McGeoghegan headed the corner clear only for Christie to fire the ball back into the danger area where Paul Frize’s flashing header was blocked by McGarrity at the feet of Sheridan. The follow–up corner was partially cleared by McGill and the loose ball cannoned off Sheridan and over the bar.

Craig McGuffie and Adam Strain

Craig McGuffie and Adam Strain

Hay broke down another Beith attack and the ball eventually fell for McGuffie on the half way line. The midfielder made excellent progress to the edge of the box before fashioning a shot that went just wide of Strain’s goal. The keeper’s wind assisted clearance caused confusion in the Glens defence and left Andy Reid with the simplest of touches to usher the ball into the gaping net to double the visitors lead on 66 minutes.

Jamie McKernon & Sean McKenna

Although the home side created the best of the remaining chances, Strain denying McGuffie on three occasions, the visitors’ lead looked unassailable and Beith ran out worthy winners.

Stagecoach West of Scotland Super League Premier Division: Game 22

Saturday 9th May, Dunterlie Park, Barrhead

ARTHURLIE 0 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2 (1)

Arthurlie were first to threaten with a break down the right and a run into the box by Eddie McTernan only for his shot from the corner of six yard box to be well held by keeper Brian McGarrity.Squad: Darren McGill On 7 minutes Glenafton took the lead after tremendous build up play and an equally impressive finish. Daniel Orsi pushed forward into the ‘Lie half and after a one-two with Alain Kinney picked out Jamie McKernon tight on the right touch line who rolled the ball back to Craig Menzies. The Glens’ captain then clipped the ball over the heads of a raft of defenders and into the box for the incoming Darren McGill , running away from goal, to kill it with the deftest of touches before turning back toward goal, skipping past Mark Blakey and then lashing the ball home from the tightest of angles.

Back came the home side. A long throw-in to the near post was headed clear by Jamie McGeoghegan and the ball quickly gathered Chris Dallas who gave his marker the slip in some style, but his shot at goal lacked the same finesse and flew wide of target. Another throw in to the near post was chested back into the danger area by Danny Burns for Ryan McGregor to take a touch before blasting the ball for goal and claims of handball by Ryan McChesney were waved away.

At the other end keeper Michael White got his fingers to a McKernon 25 yard free-kick and was alert enough to secure the ball at the second attempt before Kinney could pounce. Ten minutes from the break, yet another long throw to the near post was headed across the face of goal by Kevin Green and try as he might Burns couldn’t force Orsi’s miscued clearance over the line. H/T Arthurlie 0 Glens 1

A lively start to the second half saw chances produced at both ends. The home side came within inches from levelling the game after Allan MacPherson got the jump on his marker but his close range header from a corner-kick failed to hit the target. McKernon collected a short corner at the edge of the box and although his curling shot evaded White at full stretch Blakey was in the right place at the back post to head the ball clear. The visitors pressed again and McGill picked out McKernon deep in the ‘Lie half who hooked the ball over the head of the defender to complete a cute one-two for McGill to continue his run and force his way to the bye-line only for his cut back to be blocked and the resultant corner kick cleared. Back upfield and McGarrity made a brace save at the feet of MacPherson while at the other end an Orsi shot from the edge of the box whizzed wide of the post.

Squad: AlainKinneyOn the hour mark Kinney, on the half way line, played the ball wide to McKernon the right who took a touch before clipping the ball into the box where it was gathered by McGill. The midfielder with his back to goal and Rhys Devlin in close attendance momentarily lost his balance but recovered to turn the defender only for fellow defender Green’s attempt to win the ball penalised by the referee. Pleas that the tackle had been fair were waved away and to rub salt in the wound Green earned a second yellow card and Alain Kinney converted the spot kick.

Arthurlie won a number of corners and free-kicks in dangerous positions but struggled to seriously test McGarrity. Meanwhile the fresh legs of substitute Craig McGuffie were posing fresh problems for the 10 men and a long clearance from McGeoghegan saw the young midfielder beat Blakey to the ball and run in on goal only for the advancing White to getting a telling touch on the shot and Blakey relieved to mop up the loose ball. The keeper came to the rescue blocking a close range effort from substitute Aaron Connolly after he had been picked out by McGill following a lung bursting run into the box. Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup 2nd round

Saturday 2nd May, New Pebble Park , Annbank

ANNBANK UNITED  0 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2 (1)

Glenafton were short of personnel and made several changes from the starting eleven that had faced Auchinleck earlier in the week. In came manager Craig McEwan, Klark Thomson and Aaron Connolly for Jamie McKernon, Darren McGill and Alain Kinney. Meanwhile keeper Brian McGarrity was on the bench as an outfield substitute and David Buchanan took his place in goal.

The visitors enjoyed the best of the early play and a fine passing moving down the right ended with Craig Menzies clipping a dangerous ball into the box that was volleyed just wide of target by Thomson. An Annbank free-kick from the edge of the box had the same outcome, the ball curling past the Glens’ wall and wide of the post.

Attempts from distance by both Thomson and Connolly whizzed over the Bankie’s bar before Glenafton broke the deadlock with a well worked goal midway through the half. Daniel Orsi stole the ball on the half way line and quickly picked out Connolly to drive through the middle before drilling a low pass to Joe Andrew who turned a defender at the edge of the box with the ball falling for the incoming Daniel Orsi who placed it perfectly beyond the reach of the out-rushing keeper Jordan Callaghan and into the far corner of the net.

The home side carved out a good chance with a clever ball down the right flank that was quickly gathered and a good touch took the ball into the box before a fine shot was blocked by an equally fine save by Buchanan.

Jamie McGeoghegan, bossing the midfield, evaded a challenge before released an inch perfect pass into the right hand side of the box for Andrew to chase down and although his shot beat the outcoming keeper the ball skimmed wide of the far post. McGeoghegan turned provider again after bursting down the left flank and whipping the ball into the box where Connolly’s header looped over the bar.

In a change of flanks, Orsi’s powerful run down the right concluded with a ball into the box that was trapped well by Andrew before a turn and shot was saved well by the keeper. A fine flowing move beginning deep in his own half by McEwan and with excellent touches by Connolly and Andrew ended with Thomson side stepping the keeper in the box only for his shot to be headed clear by a well-placed defender. H/T Annbank 0 Glenafton 1

Annbank began the second half brightly putting together a string of passes and only a timely intervention in the box by Chris Meikle prevented Buchanan being tested. At the other end Connolly came within a whisker of doubling the visitors lead his thunderous swerving shot from 22 yards crashing off the base of the post with the keeper beaten. The striker then turned provider flying down the right wing before whipping a wicked ball into the box and Andrew’s header batter of the bar. A Connolly free kick into the box was only partially cleared and the loose ball blocked before being scramble clear and at the other end an Annbank shot from wide on the left bulged the side-netting.

Patient build up play by the Glens moved the ball to the bye line where Menzies cut-back was met by Orsi and claims that his attempt to slot the ball home was pushed onto the post by the hand of defender were waved away. The home side, still very much in the game, fashioned out a fine chance taking the ball deep into the Glens’ box only for Alan Cairns to time his tackle to perfection and Buchanan rushing from his line to collect the loose ball.

With 10 minutes to go Craig McEwan was replaced by Brian McGarrity in his ‘outfield debut’ against his former club Annbank, indeed McGarrity had saved a penalty kick from McEwan on his Glens debut!

The keeper had a hand in the Glens clincher, hooking the ball from the left touchline back infield where the ball was eventually collected by Andrew, before he was fouled on the edge of the box. Aaron Connolly, stepped and curled an unstoppable shot round the wall and into the net to set up a quarter-final tie with Beith at Loch Park next Wednesday. F/T Annbank 0 Glenafton 2

Auchinleck 3 Glenafton 0

Stagecoach Western Super League Premier Division : Match 21

Monday 27th April, Beechwood Park , Auchinleck

AUCHINLECK TALBOT  3 (1)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 0 (0)

Glenafton made one change to the side that drew with Arthurlie in their last competitive game just over three weeks ago, with Darren McGill replacing the suspended Michael Wardrope. In stark contrast Auchinleck were lining up for their third game in 5 days as they play catch up in their outstanding league games.

There was certainly no evidence of match fatigue as the hosts carved out a host of half chances in the opening minutes on a bright but bitterly cold Beechwood, all of which however failed to test Brian McGarrity in the Glens’ goal. On 15 minutes the former Talbot keeper had to be alert to beat former Glenafton striker David Gormley to the ball as he hunted down a deflected shot by Steven White from the edge of the box.

Darren McGill

Darren McGill

The visitors found their feet with Alan Cairns and Darren McGill combining well down the left flank, the latter picking out Alain Kinney in the middle of the park who in turn found the overlapping Joe Andrew only for his shot from wide right in the box to whiz wide of keeper Andy Leishman’s near post. Played flowed to the other end and in a flash Martin McGoldrick’s clearance was gathered by Gordon Pope who slipped the ball to Mark Shankland . The striker with space and time deep in his favour box fired for goal and although his angled shot beat McGarrity at full stretch, time seemed to stand still as the ball took an age to drift wide of target and clip the outside edge of the post.

Alain Kinney fends of Steven White

Glenafton were coming more into the game and enjoying lots of possession in the middle of the park and the industrious McGill posing a constant threat down the left. During one such foray he got the jump on James Latta to burst into the box only for his cut back across goal to be gathered by Leishman before the incoming Andrew could threaten. Back came McGill and after his twist and turn had left Latta languishing on the lush Beechwood turf he set up Daniel Orsi but his shot from the edge of the box was deflected over the bar. The corner kick was cleared by the home defence as was the one earned soon after as the visitors continued to press.

David Gormley about to slam home the opener

David Gormley about to slam home the opener

However, on 28 minutes it was the home side that opened the scoring and with some style. Gormley found Shankland and with a killer pass he threaded the ball through a clutch of red and white shirts to complete the one-two before Gormley blasted the ball beyond McGarrity from almost the identical spot where Shankland’s shot had previously struck the post.

The visitors responded with Jamie McKernon the lynch pin as four or five passes moved the ball from deep in the Glens half to edge of their opponents box only for the midfielder to lose his balance as he prepared to apply the finishing touch. Another Glenafton corner came to nothing before McGarrity, at the other end, pulled off a great save from a Gormley drive and sprang to his feet to prevent Ally Park poking home the rebound. Back came Glens and Orsi’s well- timed pass saw McGill beat the offside trap only to scoop his shot over the bar, as the back-tracking defenders closed in.

Kinney's header blocked by White

Kinney’s header blocked by White

Ten minutes from the break the visitors had an appeal for a penalty waved away after Kinney’s header from a corner kick appear to be blocked by the outstretched hand of White. Up-field and the lively Shankland fashioned another chance but again his shooting didn’t match the build-up play. On the stroke of half time Orsi suffered the same misfortune when from the edge of the box he drilled McGill’s cut back over the bar.

H/T Auchinleck 1 Glens 0

Two minutes after the restart Andrew gave McGoldrick the slip before the defender took the feet from him and although McKernon’s free kick from 24 yards beat the wall the ball sailed over the bar and disappeared in the fading light, and so too clear cut chances for the Glens as the home side began to dominate. Another Shankland shot zoomed inches over the bar and McGarrity pushed a Gormley shot wide as the strike force looked to double Talbot’s lead. Gormley’s optimistic appeal for a spot-kick after a block in the box was duly dismissed.

Jamie McKernon and Willie Boyd

Jamie McKernon and Willie Boyd

Some respite for the visitors as McGill’s determination had him progress down the left before picking out Andrew deep in the box, but McGoldrick was in no mood to let the striker fashion a shot at goal and mopped up the danger. The hosts counter-attacked and although Gormley beat the outrushing McGarrity to the chase for a long ball he was forced wide toward the corner flag and with Chris Meikle in close attendance he still managed to whip the ball back into the six yard box over the head of the keeper, now at his near post, for the incoming Shankland to guide the ball into the gaping net; Talbot 2-0 up after 64 minutes.

Mark Shankland doubles Talbots' lead

Mark Shankland doubles Talbots’ lead

McGill’s shift and half was over and he was replaced by Craig McGuffie as the visitors tried to salvage something from the match. Andrew got the better of McGoldrick in the box but his effort cannoned off the shins of Gordon Pope befofore the ball fell kindly for McKernon and although he smacked the ball sweetly it zoomed wide of Leishman’s post.

Further substitutions followed with Andrew replaced by Aarron Connolly and the Talbot goalscorers coming off for Keir Millken and Graham Wilson; the pair soon in the thick of the action. Wilson and and Jamie McGeoghegan engaged in an aerial battle for a ball clipped into the box with Glens defender adjudged to have used a hand. Up stepped Pope to convert the spot kick and put the home side three ahead with 10 minutes to go.

Within a minute the Glens appealed for handball in the Talbot box by Colin Spence, but to add salt to the wounds, the official penalised Orsi for impeding the last of the home side’s substitutes. McGarrity prevented Pope’s brace with another fine save before Milliken & Wilson combined well to create another notable chance but there was to be no further scoring. FT Auchinleck 3 Glenafton 0
