Glenafton 5 Lugar 1

Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup 1st Round

Saturday 2nd April 2016, Loch Park, New Cumnock

Glenafton made several changes to the line up that started against Beith two weeks ago for the visit of Ayrshire District side Lugar Boswell Thistle in this Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup 1st round tie. In came Craig Menzies, Craig Potter, Darren McGill and Chris Dallas for Alan Cairns, David Gray, Jamie Hay and Joe Andrew.

Cameron Marlow

Although chances were thin on the ground in the opening 45 minutes the visitors took a deserved lead midway through the half based on their domination of possession at that time. Jamie Hilton pounced on some loose play and picked his way through the home rearguard before rounding keeper Brian McGarrity to slot the ball home and out the Jaggy Bunnets ahead.

The visitors looked certain to preserve their lead until the break before a touch of class from Cameron Marlow on 44 minutes squared the tie. The midfielder gathered the ball in space and curled a beauty in the postage stamp for his first goal since returning to Loch Park on a loan deal from Queen’s Park.

H/T Glens 1 Lugar 1

The visitors responded well to that late blow and began the second half in determined fashion however the tide quickly changed as the Glens found their shooting boots. A fine passage of passing play ended with Mick McCann collecting the ball to smash an unstoppable shot past the helpless keeper Avici to put the home side ahead om 53 minutes and claim his 10th goal of the season. Two minutes later McCann turned provider to set up penalty box predator John Paul Boyle to double the Glens lead and bag his 10th goal of the season.

Mick McCann and John Paul Boyle hit double figures

The home side continued to press and any fightback from a hard working Lugar seemed a lost cause just after the hour mark when McCann headed home a corner-kick to make it 4-1 and Boyle fired in a fifth four minutes from time.  F/T Glens 5 Lugar 1

A good recovery from the home side after going one down who will now host Ardeer Thistle in the next round. Also good to see Dan Orsi get a belated birthday present to come off the bench and play in his first game since picking up a bad injury back in January.
