BEITH JUNIORS 3 (2)

Before kick-off both sides and supporters observed a minute’s silence in memory of life-long Glenafton fan Jack Harris who sadly passed away and will be sorely missed at Loch Park.

The Glens made three changes to the side that started against Troon a fortnight with Cameron Marlow, Craig McGuffie and Mick McCann taking the places of Craig Menzies, Darren McGill and John Paul Boyle.

On a glorious spring day is was sunshine on Beith with 4 minutes gone. Richie Burke’s angled shot from deep in the box was deflected wide for a corner-kick which was taken by the same player to be met at the near post by the head of Nicky Docherty and despite the hosts’ attempts to clear the ball off the line the referee eventually signalled a score after confirmation from his assistant.

aa_goal01.jpg

The visitors were forced into an early change after John Sheridan sustained a knee injury and was replaced by Zander Ryan. Following a minor reshuffle Beith were back on the front foot and Paul Frize picked out Burke in the box only for the outrushing keeper Brian McGarrity and the outstretched leg of Ryan McChesney blocking a certain second. At times it seemed there were two McChesney’s on the park as he had to hunt down waves of quick breaks by the visitors.

At the other end Joe Andrew fashioned a half chance as he turned make-shift centre back Ross Fisher at the edge of the box before striking a low angled drive that was well held by keeper Stephen Grindlay. On 17 minutes Glens threatened again when McGuffie’s cross was headed by Marlow at the far corner of the six yard box across the face of goal only for McCann’s attempted header to drift wide. A minute later David Gray saw off a challenge from Docherty to force the ball into the box where McCann beat Fisher to the ball before pulling off a fine block from Grindlay.

aa_a_mickmccann.jpg

Mick McCann and Josh McArthur

The Mighty responded through David McGowan who despite being surrounded by four red shirts managed to engineer a low shot at goal from a tight angle that beat McGarrity but the ball slipped beyond the far post. McGowan then turned provider following another quick break that stretched the Glens defence and the ball played to Darren Christie with time and space in the box but uncharacteristically his shot failed to test the keeper. However, soon after on 26 minutes Beith doubled their advantage. Ryan mopped up a Glens attack and his clearance was gathered by Christie deep in his own half before he shook off the attention of Gray and sidestepped the tackle of Jamie Hay to burst through the open space to the edge of the box and with his way to goal now blocked by two defenders he slid the ball to McGowan who quickly returned it to Christie to guide a cracking shot into the back of the net from 20 yards out.

aa_a_darrenchristie.jpg

Darren Christie laps it up

Marlow made good progress down the left before firing in a decent cross that saw Grindlay leap to clutch ball cleanly as McCann threatened. The visitors broke upfield again and after twisting and turning at the corner of the penalty box Burke curled a shot that seen late by McGarrity and the ball pushed wide with two strong hands. The keeper then got a strong fist to the ensuing corner-kick to punch the ball clear from the ‘two heads are better than one’ of Andy Reid and Docherty at the back post.

Text book header from Mick McCann

On 39 minutes the Glens earned a corner-kick after Grindlay punched clear a free kick clipped into a crowded box. McGuffie floated a peach of a ball to the back post where Mick McCann timed his jump to perfection and bulleted his header home – text book execution.

Two minutes later Andrew fired in a wicked cross from the right only for Grindlay to pull off another fine save as McGuffie and McCann waited to pounce. The visitors ended the half with back to back corner kicks that were defended stoutly by the home guard.

H/T Glens 1 Beith 2

The home side were first to threaten after the break through a snapshot from McCann that whizzed past the post. At the other end Christie’s blistering run down the right ended with a wicked ball across the face of the goal that Reid was studs away from guiding it home. Play was raging from end to end and on 52 minutes Andrew and McCann combined at the edge of the box and claims that their progress was denied by Fisher’s hand ball were waved away.

The visitors broke upfield and the ball eventually fell for Docherty in the box but under pressure from Chris Meikle he rushed his shot and the ball sailed high over the bar. McGuffie replied with a shot from distance that zoomed wide of the post. On 57 minutes Andrew’s foxed Fisher in the box before squaring the ball for the inrushing Marlow who shrugged off tackle from Josh McArthur before shooting from 8 yards out only for the advancing Grindlay to save in some style.

aa_a_cammy.jpg

Cammy shoots for goal

Both sides made a brace of substitutions with Beith bringing on Tom Collins and Jamie Wilson for Tommy Martin and David McGowan and Glens replacing Jamie Hay and Chris McGuffie with Chris Dallas and John Paul Boyle.

With 10 minutes to go Reid broke down the right before cutting the ball back for Burke to dink the ball with the outside of his foot and with the ball destined for the keeper’s top left corner McGarrity launch himself at full stretch to push the ball away with his left hand – a save of the highest quality that kept the Glens in the game.

aa_a_brianmcgarrity.jpg

Super save from Brian

That status remained until five minutes from time after Reid time his run to perfection and spring the offside trap to gather Christie’s through ball and continue unimpeded deep into the Glens box before lashing an unstoppable shot beyond McGarrity.

Andy Reid seals the points

Glenafton came close to clutching a life-line a minute later only for McChesney’s looping header from a corner-kick to skim the far post and the chance like the points were gone.

Mr Jack Harris

The club were saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong Glenafton Athletic supporter Jack Harris . Former club president Alex Jess, once a neighbour of Jack’s at Farden Avenue, described him as “an out and out Glens man that hardly missed a game , home or away”. Jack liked to stand up beyond the away dug-out and before every game Alex would ask him “will we win today Jack” and the reply was always “of course Alex” . He moved to Cumnock a few years ago but never missed the chance to let people know his footballing allegiances still lay at New Cumnock !

The thoughts of all at Glenafton Athletic are with to Jack’s wife Peggy, son John, daughter Kay, family members and friends at this sad time. There will be a minute’s silence before kick-off at Saturday’s home against Beith Juniors in memory of Jack .

Jack’s funeral will take place at Ayr Crematorium on Ftiday 18th March at 3:30pm.

TROON 1 (1)

Prior to kick-off club captain Craig Menzies posed with mascot Sonny Coughtrie wearing the new Fun Fours strip sponsored by Afton Homes. Joining them was Hughie Holland who played for the Glens in the 1970s and was visiting with match day sponsors Catrine Whisky Bond. Hughie thoroughly enjoyed his visit and said it brought back many happy memories. A big thanks to Zee, who went on to win the Sponsors award on the day.

aa_CraigMenziesSonnyCoughtrieHughHolland.jpg

Craig Menzies and Hughie Holland with Sonny Coughtrie

Glenafton made two changes to the side that started against Benburb last week with John Paul Boyle and Darren McGill coming in for Mick McCann and Craig McGuffie. On the bench was midweek signing Cameron Marlow, making a return to the club on a loan deal from Queen’s Park until the end of the season. Starting for Troon were former Glenafton players Ally Semple and Martin Ure.

Troon came flying out the traps and the home side found themselves on the back foot for much of the half facing waves of attacks. The visitors opened the scoring on 3 minutes after Dale Moore darted down the right and although his route to goal was blocked he earned his side a throw-in which was collected on the bye-line by Adam Forsyth. The Troon hit-man shook off a couple of defenders as he progressed along the line before firing for goal and although keeper Brian McGarrity got a hand to the ball the alert Forsyth pounced and drilled the loose ball through a ruck of legs and into the net.

aa_a_goal01

Adam Forsyth celebrates the opener

Three minutes later Forsyth came within a whisker of doubling the lead. Good build up play down the left set up Colin Spence to stroke a measured pass into the box which was cutely dummied by Forsyth for Moore to gather and turn a defender before clipping the ball into the danger area only for Forsyth’s header to fly inches wide of the near post. No respite for the Red shirts and after gifting possession upfield the lively Scott Chatham lifted a lethal ball over the home defence for the menacing Moore to trap with one foot and then attempt to lob the outrushing McGarrity with the other, only for the ball to drop over the bar.

On 13 minutes Glenafton won a corner-kick courtesy of Ure after he shanked a cross-field pass that had the ball heading for Royal Troon! Ryan McChesney’s header was partially cleared and the big defender was robbed of the ball by Forsyth who then also saw of the challenge of McGill before exploding upfield and picking out Craig Harvey wide on the right to cut back the ball into the box and there was the back chasing McChesney to mop up the danger.

aa_a_joeandrewchrismcknight.jpg

“Me and my shadow”  – Joe Andrew and Chris McKnight

The visitors continued to dictate play and the alert Forsyth chased down an under-hit back pass only for McGarrity to win that race and his clearance cannon off the shins of the striker and the ball spin harmlessly wide. Midway through the half the keeper foiled Forsyth following another excellent passage of play by the Portland Parkers which concluded with a quality through ball to Moore to deftly dink over the Glens defence for Forsyth to collect and tee up a shot before McGarrity bravely dived at his feet to smother the ball. A minute later another fine move culminated in Jordan Muir floating the ball to Moore at the corner of the box to head back for Spence to meet sweetly on the volley and send the ball whizzing over the bar.

The home side continued to toil with only glimpses of half-chances on show. Jamie Hay gathered the ball in the centre circle and his ball through the middle was touched on by Andrew for Ally Park to  slip into box for Boyle to chase but Semple had a head start and gathered safely. Semple came out on top in a similar race with Boyle before the break only on this occasion he had to kick the ball clear. H/T Glens 0 Troon 1

The half-time oranges added a much needed zest to the Glens play and within two minutes of the restart they equalised with a peach of a goal. McGarrity launched a free kick from the outside of his box to the edge of his opponents’ box where Andrew got the jump on his shadow Chris McKnight to knock the ball into the box where John Paul Boyle with his back to goal gave Gavin Collins the slip and let the ball bounce a couple of times before lashing a net-bulger beyond the reach of Semple.

aa_a_goal02

JP slams the equaliser home

The goal set the scene for the Glens to lift the tempo of their play and press forward while the visitors crisp passing moves were less of a feature of their play. Hay tried his luck from distance only for his low drilled free kick to take a deflection and Troon clear the corner-kick that followed. Craig Menzies lofted the ball from half-way and Andrew triumphed in the aerial battle with Collins to head the ball back into the path of Ally Park to curl a shot for goal that was well held by Semple. The keeper was then head and shoulders above both attackers and fellow defenders to clutch a wicked ball into the box by Alan Cairns.

aa_a_allypark.jpg

Ally Park takes on Troon

On 57 minutes Semple pulled of his save of the match. Cairns broke down a Troon attack deep in his own half and quickly found McGill tight on the left flank. The midfielder carried the ball for a few strides before launching it up-field where Andrew outpaced Dale Keenan and McKnight before he trapped it with his right and in a flash fired with his left only for Semple to push the ball away with both hands and McKnight clear up the rebound.

Moore fashioned a chance for Troon on the hour mark when he picked out Chatham in the box who showed great determination to force his way past a clutch of defenders on his run across the face of goal only to scoop his shot over the bar. Back came the Glens and Park pounced on a slack defensive header by Collins before powering to the edge of the box and drilling a low fierce shot that beat Semple and slipped inches wide of the post.

More chances were now coming the way of the visitors. Midway through the half substitute Peter McGill snapped up a misplaced pass at the edge of the Glens’ box only to be brought down by Hay and although McKnight’s curled the free-kick round the wall McGarrity gathered comfortably.

On 74 minutes the injured Hay was replaced by Craig McGuffie and his jinking runs were soon giving Troon a new threat to consider. Five minutes later he picked up a square ball in the middle of the park from Andrew and pushed forward before thundering a shot from 25 yards out that boomed off McKnight and out for corner kick. Glens used the break swap the front pairing of Andrew and Boyle for Chris Dallas and Mick McCann before Meikle’s header from the corner was deflected wide by a fellow red shirt.

aa_a_mcguffie.jpg

Craig McGuffies skips past Dale Keenan

The visitors brought on Dean Keenan for Chatham to shore things up at the back while no doubt hoping for an opportunity to exploit his notable dead-ball skills. With 5 minutes to go McGuffie slide-ruled a ball into the box for Dallas to chase and round the keeper only for the offside flag to bring the move to an end, much to the relief of Keenan who appeared to have played the Glens man onside. At the other end McKnight played a clever one-two with Forsyth at the edge of box and with McChesney closing down, he instantly shot for goal but McGarrity was his match.

A Glens’ corner won by McCann was scrambled clear of the box before Menzies took matters into his own hands and slalomed his way back into the box only for Ure to time his last ditch tackle to perfection. Further half chances came and went at either end before the whistle blew without the deadlock being broken. FT Glens 1 Troon 1

Benburb 1 Glenafton 5

New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup 3rd round

Saturday 27th February 2016, New Tinto Park , Govan

BENBURB 1 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 5 (2)

Glenafton made two changes to the side that started against Shettleston for the trip to Govan for the West of Scotland Cup 3rd round tie against Benburb with Jamie Hay and Mick McCann coming in for Darren McGill and John Paul Boyle. Meanwhile on the side-lines for the home side was former Glenafton defender and Scottish Junior Cup winner Ian Gray, now a coach at the Bens.

The Glens were soon on the front foot with Craig McGuffie looking lively and his twists and turns proving a handful for the Bens defence. However it was from a set play that the midfielder created the first chance of the game on 4 minutes by curling a free kick beyond the wall from 25 yards that was caught cleanly by keeper Scott Somerville. The keeper then got down low to hold a Joe Andrew drive after the striker had shaken off Andrew Wright in the box.

aa_a_craigmenzies.jpg

Craig Menzies on the move

The hosts earned a corner kick, however Brian McGarrity was able to rise unchallenged and cleanly clutch the ball from under the bar. The keeper quickly rolled the ball out to Craig Menzies who made excellent progress upfield before setting up Ally Park to try his luck from distance only to be denied by Somerville’s safe hands. On 14 minutes Menzies was again Park’s provider but his shot from 22 yards sailed over the bar.

aa_a_celebs_01.jpg

Craig McGuffie celebrates the opener

The visitors continued to press and took the lead five minutes later after Craig McGuffie snapped up a knock down from Mick McCann and forced his way into the box before wriggling past three defenders to unleash an unstoppable left foot shoot into the net.

A quickly taken free kick by David Gray was clipped into the box by McGuffie and gathered by Andrew and on this occasion Wright stuck to him like glue to prevent a shot on goal. Bens responded through a good run down the right flank by Scott Hendry to set up a half chance for the busy Ryan Livingston that was smothered at the post by McGarrity.

aa_a_goal02a.jpg

David Gray hits the spot

Midway through the half Andrew was barged off the ball and from the resultant free kick some 25 yards out David Gray curled the ball past the wall and into the postage stamp beyond the valiant reach of Somerville for his first competitive goal for the Glens. So good the local ‘Govan doo’ joined in the celebrations!

The hosts’ heads never dropped and indeed went on to enjoy their best spell of possession and carve out a couple of decent chances. McGarrity punched clear a corner kick as the airborne Hendry threatened at the back post. Darren McNeil gathered the loose ball before clipping the ball deep into the box where McNeil deserved more after he Van Basten’ed the ball over the bar.

aa_a_chessytackle

Ryan McChesney and Jamie Boyle with Brian McGarrity

McNeil turned provider with a powerful run into the left hand side of the box to square the ball across the face of goal for the incoming Jamie Boyle who was denied his shot at goal with a last ditch tackle by Ryan McChesney which saw both players ending up in a heap on the New Tinto Park surface – the big Glens defender taking a bad knock that would see him replaced at the break. Head tennis by Park and McCann partially cleared a Bens’ corner before the ball was floated back into the back post for Wright but McGarrity came out on top again with another clean catch.

Gary McKenna replaced the injured Boyle and in the last action of the half the substitute’s low angled drive forced the Glens’ keeper into pulling off another fine save.

H/T Bens 0 Glens 2

Glenafton replaced the injured McChesney with Darren McGill at the break and the reshuffle saw Menzies partner Chris Meikle in the centre of defence and Park move back to full back.
Livingston’s shot from the edge of box warmed McGarrity’s fingers as the temperature dropped at New Tinto. Gray returned the favour at the other end after Somerville pushed his free kick round the post and then punched the corner-kick clear.

At the other end Park nicked the ball from the feet of Scott Jarvie and McGarrity snapped up the corner-kick and a cleverly took out a handful of Bens rolling the ball out to McGill lurking on the outskirts of the box, only for Jarvie to suffer a rush of blood to the head and from behind swipe the feet from the Glens midfielder to prevent his break upfield. A red card followed and the home side were down to 10 men on 49 minutes.

aa_a_goal03.jpg

Joe Andrew heads home for 3-0

Three minutes later the visitors extended their lead with a sublime goal that saw no fewer than 8 red shirts involved in a move that nursed the ball from box to box. Menzies cleared the ball upfield for McCann to chest it back to Andrew who instantly released McGill down the left before cutting infield and feeding Gray to roll the ball to Jamie Hay and one touch later Park was in possession on the right flank to slip the ball up the line to McGuffie and with his route to the inner depths of the box he rolled the ball to Park to whip the a cross deep into the box where Joe Andrew outjumped Colin McInnes to bullet a glancing header into the net.

aa_a_goal04.jpg

Andrew Collinge bags for Bens

Great credit to the 10 men and on 56 minutes their efforts were rewarded after a corner-kick to the back post was won by the head of Andrew Collinge and in flash he stuck out a foot to guide the ball into the net.

aa_a_goal04a.jpg

Mick McCann tees up for the 4th goal

Hopes of a home fight back were dashed on 63 minutes after Mick McCann pounced on a slack pass to burst into box with two defenders on his heels and from 16 yards out calmly clip the ball over the head of the advancing goalie into the net.

A well planned short corner between Hay, Park and Gray concluded with the latter blasting an angled shot inches and high and wide of target. The visitors introduced John Paul Boyle for Andrew while the hosts brought on Lee Lockhart for Collinge. In between time Somerville pulled off a fine save from McGuffie’s shot and showed great reflexes to block McCann’s attempt to bury the rebound.

aa_a_davidgray.jpg

David Gray

McCann then found Boyle in the box and after leaving two defenders on the deck the ball fell unkindly he was forced to feed the ball back to McGill only for his shot to whizz over the bar. A blistering run down the right wing by McGuffie saw the midfielder then advance along the bye-line before clipping the ball back to Boyle only for Sommerville to pull off another great block and after the ball had been cleared momentarily Gray gathered and his shot from range skimmed over the bar with the keeper a spectator.

aa_a_goal05.jpg

Mick McCann completes the scoring

In last action of the game the Glens pressure finally served up another goal. McGill from the half way line played the ball upfield where Boyle and McCann conjured up an intricate one-two to leave the former free to run into the box. Boyle drew the keeper from his line and appeared to get his angle right only for Somerville to get a strong outstretched hand to the ball but could do nothing to prevent Mick McCann from firing the rebound into the empty net from six yards out.

Glenafton 1 Shettleston 2

McBoookie.com West of Scotland League Super League Premier Division : Match 11

Saturday 13th February 2016, Loch Park, New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETC 1 (1)

SHETTLESTON JUNIORS 2 (1)

Glenafton hosted Shettleston for the first league meeting between the two sides at Loch Park in what was their first home match since 7th November last year. The home side made a couple of changes from the starting eleven that faced Rob Roy back in January with David Gray, making his first start for the club, and Darren McGill taking the places of Dan Orsi (badly injured at Rob Roy) and Jamie Hay. Meanwhile on the bench was mid-week signing Chris Dallas.

It was Gray on 4 minutes that had the first pop at goal after running on to a neat flick from Joe Andrew before firing from the edge of the box and keeper Bryn Halliwell making a clean save. The visitors soon settled and Robert Campbell and Scott Anson were proving to be handful in more ways one and both went on to put a tremendous shift for the Town.

On 10 minutes Chris McCormack’s floated free-kick deep into the box was punched clear from the head of Reece McGillon by keeper Brian McGarrity. Miguel Blanco then released Campbell down the right to cut inside and attempt to curl an effort for the top corner only for Ryan McChesney to head clear and although Anson picked the loose ball his attempt to round the outrushing McGarrity was quickly snuffed out by the alert keeper.

The home side made the breakthrough on 17 minutes after a neat pass from Andrew took McCormack out and gave Darren McGill the jump on Ryan France to run into the box and from 12 yards out slot the ball low and hard beyond the reach of advancing keeper and into the net.

aa_a_goal

Darren McGill opens the scoring

Spurred on by the goal the Glens pressed for a second and enjoyed a good spell of pressure beginning with Andrew giving Reon Juskowiak the slip in the box and forcing a shot at the near post which was held well by Halliwell. Both sides lined up to face a McGill free-kick from wide on the right but there was to be no aerial contest as the Glens midfielder went for goal instead and was unlucky to see the ball go inches wide of the far post. Gray and John Paul Boyle then combined to find Andrew in the box and his turn and shot was foiled by another save at the near post. Soon after Craig Menzies, on the overlap, picked out Andrew and another quick turn in the box ended with his thunder strike being too hot to handle for the keeper and ball booming off his chest before being cleared up. Meanwhile at the other end McGarrity was comfortably dealing with cross balls into the box as the visitors struggled to turn their possession into half-chances.

Brynn Halliwell and Ryan Frances keeps Joe Andrew at bay

On 33 minutes Gray quickly gathered his corner-kick that had been partially cleared and whipped the ball back into the goal mouth where it was headed clear by Anson only to be gathered by the Glens midfielder again. He hooked the ball high over the bank of defenders for Boyle to cut it across the face of goal where Halliwell pounced on it at the near post as Andrew threatened.

Having weathered the storm Town struck back and drew level on 36 minutes. Anson held up the ball well before it found its way to Miguel Blanco who had cleverly found space and time in the box to pick his spot from 8 yards out to lash the ball home.

aa_a_miguel.jpg

The Glens tried to respond through McGill only for his run to be broken by a bank of black shirts and the ball cleared upfield for Anson to chase with McChesney at his heels. Both players collided at the edge of the box and the ball fell kindly for McGarrity to gather. Back up the park and his counterpart clutched Craig McGuffie’s shot from the edge of the box. The young Glens midfielder then gathered the ball deep in his own half and side stepped McCormack’s crude lunge to accelerate upfield and then hurdle Frances mistimed tackle before skipping past another defender and whipping the ball to the near post where Halliwell bravely punched it clear of Andrew’s head.

aa_a_scott_darren

Scott Anson and Darren McGill

Gray’s free-kick into the box was cleared for a corner-kick which in turn was quickly cleared up the park only for Juskowiak lung-bursting run to be ended up by the back-tracking McGill. In the last play of the half Campbell, now switched to the left flank, shook off a couple of defenders before his cross into the danger area was cleanly clutched by McGarrity.

H/T Glens 1 Shettleston 1

Glens began the new half brightly and after making good progress down the left Boyle cut inside to square the ball for Ally Park to thunder a shot from 20 yards and although Halliwell couldn’t hold the ball he snapped it up at the second attempt. The visitors broke upfield and earned a corner which was snuffed out by Menzies and McGarrity and the scene was set for a high tempo second half with play pulsating back and forth.

aa_a_jpboyle

John Paul Boyle on the move with Ally Park in support

Boyle fashioned another mazy run before his shot from the edge of the box was blocked. On 50 minutes Gray trapped in a pocket of Town players clipped a fine ball down the right for McGuffie to collect and slalom his way beyond McGillon and Frances on his way to the near post where Halliwell, now on his knees, pulled off a fine block before snatching the loose ball.

aa_a_mcguffiechance

Brynn Halliwell blocks Ctaig McGuffie’s chance

Campbell latched on to the keeper’s punt up the park to cut in from the left flank and as defenders closed in fired an angled shot that McGarrity finger-tipped past the post before pulling another fine save from the resultant corner-kick. McGill earned the home side a corner-kick but again the set play failed to test the keeper and was headed by well clear by Juskowiak. Soon after another Glens corner kick came and went.

As the hour mark approached Campbell and Anson combined down the left flank to hold of a clutch of red shirts before picking out Blanco in a crowded box and although he did well to engineer a shot at goal, McGarrity was his match with another fine save at full stretch to guide the ball wide. McChesney headed the corner kick clear from the near post only for the ball to fall for Campbell at the edge of the box but under pressure from the outrushing Gray he ballooned his shot high over the bar.

aa_a_briansave.jpg

Finger-tip save from Brian McGarrity

After repelling a couple of Glens attacks the Town broke free up the right and the ball whipped across the face of goal threading itself between McGarrity and Chris Meikle at the near post only for the incoming Anson’s slide to get a stud to the ball (and a certain goal) fall inches short. The visitors brought on the fresh legs of Paul Martin for McGuigan.

The Glens pressed and McGuffie’s run and shot from outside of the box was blocked. McGill’s forceful run through the middle was brought to an abrupt ending by another piece of stout defending by McGillon. Boyle picked up the loose ball and fed the overlapping Menzies only for his cut-back from the dead ball line to be blocked by the Trojan Campbell and the resultant corner cleared by a resolute defence. Another jinky run by McGuffie was well underway before concluding in a sandwich between Jordan Dalzell and Chris McCormack; the latter’s barge enough to earn him a second yellow card and a lonely walk to the pavilion. Shettleston reshuffled the pack and Keigan Parker gave way to Daniel Boyle.

aa_a_craig_chris

Craig McGuffie and Chris McCormack

The home side continued to force the game and Meikle after dispossessing Dalzell at the edge of the Glens box embarked on a determined run that took him the length of the park and into Town’s box only for McGillon, his opposite number, to prevent the pass to Andrew. On 73 minutes the home side replaced McGill and Andrew with Chris Dallas and Mick Mcann and the latter almost made an instant impact as he got on the end of a free-kick clipped into the box only for his first time volley to scream over the bar. Dallas’s pace then saw him burst into the box and a sliding tackle from Frances secured another Glens corner-kick which was quickly cleared from the box and eventually fell for McChesney and his long range effort sailed over the bar.

The visitors made their final substitution with Dalzell making way for Brian McEwan. Ten minutes from time while the Glens were disputing the award of a throw-in the Town took the throw and the ball eventually gathered by Reon Juskowiak who embarked on a long lonely diagonal run seemingly heading for the far corner post but with Alan Cairns and the chasing McGuffie now closing in at the corner of the penalty box he cut the ball across the goalmouth and incredibly it found its way unimpeded into the far corner of the net.

A minute later Shettleston could have doubled their lead after an excellent run down the right by Martin and a peach of a pass for Anson who initially gave Menzies the slip before teeing up his shot only for the Glens captain to get a goal saving block and deflect the ball wide while McGarrity plucked the resultant corner-kick out the air.

In the closing minute Gray’s low drilled shot was held at the second attempt by Halliwell and the last chance of the game fell to McChesney who did well to chest down a free kick floated into the box only for his follow up volley to sail over the bar.

Dallas does deal

Welcome Chris

Glenafton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of 28 year old striker Chris Dallas from Arthurlie. Chris kicked off his Junior career at East Kilbride Thistle in Season 2011/12 and played in both games against the Glens that season as the New Cumnock side won the Super League 1st Division title to return to the Premier Division.

dallas_01Chris also stepped up to the Premier after joining Arthurlie but was snapped up 6 months later by Albion Rovers. The highlight of his time at Cliftonhill was the fantastic Scottish Cup run in 2013/14 and beating Premier Division side Motherwell to set up a Quarter-Final against Rangers at Ibrox. The the visitors took an early shock-lead only for the home side to equalise late on and go on to win the replay 2-0 at New Douglas Park.

Chris returned to Arthurlie for a 6 month loan spell in September 2014 a month before Craig McEwan took over as manager at the Barrhead club. At the end of the loan spell, in early January, Southy signed up Chris on an 18 month deal at Dunterlie only to take up the post of Glenafton manager soon after.

Chris has signed a 2 year deal and we would like to welcome him to Loch Park.

Darren and Chris sign new deals

Glenafton are delighted to announce that midfielder Darren McGill and defender Chris Meikle have signed new 2 years deals with club.

McBoookie.com West of Scotland League Super League Premier Division : Match 10

Saturday 23rd January 2016, Guy’s Meadow, Cumbernauld

KIRKINTILLOCH ROB ROY 0 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2 (2)

The outcome of the first competitive game in the New Year for both Glenafton and Rob Roy would result with one or the other leapfrogging Auchinleck Talbot (on Junior Cup duty) to top of the league. Glenafton made one change to the starting eleven that faced Kilbirnie Ladeside in the West of Scotland Cup in mid-December with Jamie Hay replacing Michael Wardrope (recalled by Ayr United for the first team match at Albion Rovers) while new signing David Gray was on the bench.

The visitors were first threaten after a powerful run down the right flank to the bye-line by Dan Orsi only for his cut-back intended for John Paul Boyle to be cut out by his name sake Daniel Boyle. Back came the Glens through Craig McGuffie who skipped past one defender before firing from the edge of the box and the ball pushed wide for a corner-kick which was duly cleared by the Rabs defence.

JP and Joe celebrate the opener

On 7 minutes the pressure paid off after a wonderful turn and pass from Joe Andrew set up John Paul Boyle to give both centre backs the slip before forcing his way into the right hand corner of the box and drilling a low hard shot beyond the reach of keeper Jordan Brown and the ball nestling in the net at the far post.

Glens continued to press and Orsi whipped another wicked ball across the face of goal from the right but Paul Finnigan marshalled the danger away as Boyle closed in. A corner-kick gave the Rabs some respite but this was cleared comfortably.

Joe’s chip heads for the net

On 17 minutes a powerful headed clearance by Chris Meikle aided by a touch from Orsi released Joe Andrew from the half-way line to run unimpeded toward goal. As Brown advanced to his six yard line the Glens striker all but stopped on the outskirts of the box to get his bearings to calmly loft the ball over the keeper’s head into the gaping net.

Jamie Hay muscled Scott Upton off the ball on the left hand side before it was quickly gathered by Andrew and moved across field to Orsi who tried his luck from range, the ball whizzing over Brown’s outstretched arm and the bar.

Brian McGarrity and Kevin Watt

On 27 minutes Rob Roy appeared to have halved the deficit from the corner kick after keeper Brian McGarrity, under pressure from Kevin Watt, had dropped the ball at the back post, before Watt then forced the loose ball over the line with the keeper pushed back onto the post, by which time the referee had blown for the infringement. Five minutes later Watt, with time and space on his side, spurned a great chance to score from open play, only to drag his shot well wide of target.

aa_a_brown

Craig McGuffie foiled by Jordan Brown

Glenafton suffered a blow ten minutes before the break after Dan Orsi landed badly on his right ankle and was stretchered off to warm applause from both sets of supporters with Darren McGill coming on in his place.

On 41 minutes the visitors came close to adding a third after Boyle’s cross into the box was initially cleared from the feet of Ally Park by Finnigan and the ball fell for McGuffie only for Brown to make a fantastic one-handed save and the alert Finnegan followed up to clear the danger. In the last action of the half a Rob Roy free-kick floated into a packed box was punched clear by McGarrity from the head of Boyle. HT Rob Roy 0 Glens 2

The home side were late out the dressing room and were nearly caught sleeping from Glens kick off as JP Boyle gave chase to a through ball and although he saw off the challenge of David Barr to advance deep into the box the back-tracking defender did well to block the shot at goal at the expense of a corner-kick, which came to nothing.

aa_a_joe.jpg

Joe Andrew with JP in support

An excellent run through the middle by Upton was ended by a trip by Park and although the midfielder’s sweetly struck free kick curled past the Glens wall it also whizzed just wide of the post. At other end Hay’s long range effort was held well by Brown.

Although possession was evenly balanced there was now a real sense of urgency in the home side’s play that was missing in the first. Sawyers did well at the bye-line to turn Ryan McChesney before clipping the ball to the back post where Finnigan quickly picked out Luke Whelan and his pass gathered by Watt before turning and firing for goal only for McGarrity pull off a fine save, low at the post.

Glens won another corner-kick but again failed to fashion an attempt at goal. Soon after McGuffie waltzed his way to the bye-line before clipping the ball into the six yard box for McGill only for Lee Gallacher to gather and clear.

aa_a_ryan.jpg

Ryan McChesney  and Willie Sawyers

Midway through the half the Glens goal lead a charmed life topped off with a class piece of defending. Gallacher’s ball into the box was controlled well by Watt who then side stepped the advancing McGarrity before curling his shot from a tight angle beyond Meikle at the near post only for the ball to crash off the underside of the bar and onto the line before cannoning off the inside of the far post. Bad luck over, McChesney then stood strong to take the ball off the toe of Sawyers to prevent the hit man scoring from a yard out. A few minutes later the big Glens defender had to leave the field through injury to be replaced by David Gray, on his Glens debut.

Both keepers made light work of efforts from McGill at one end and Gallagher at the other end. With 15 minutes to go the visitors brought on Mick McCann for Joe Andrew, the striker leaving to well-deserved applause from the travelling support.

aa_a_brian.jpg

Brian saves from Scott

The home side enjoyed the best of the chances as the game drew to a close but could not get the better of the Glens defence. McGarrity coolly clutched another Upton free-kick that had deceived the Glens wall and then leapt to gather a looping header from Barr and in the dying minutes Craig Menzies was on hand to head the ball off the line.

Another solid performance from the Glens extending the run to 6 wins in a row , including 5 league wins taking the New Cumnock side to the top of the league.

David Gray joins the Glens

Glenafton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of 27 year old midfielder David Gray. He kicked off his career at Dundee United before moving to Kilmarnock in January 2007 and then on to Kilbirnie Ladeside the following season, earning a West of Scotland Cup winners medal after defeating Pollok 5-1 in the final.

Following a spell at Dumbarton David moved to the USA to play for Kitsap Pumas out of Washington State for two seasons , returning to Scotland during their close-season for spells at Renfrew and Airdrie United. He settled back in Scotland with another spell at Dumbarton before joining Montrose in 2012/13 where he hit the headlines with a wonder 89th minute strike at Ibrox to earn the Gable Endies a draw against the 3rd Division leaders Rangers. After two seasons at Links Park he had a season with Clyde before joining Lowland League side BSC Glasgow, along with former Glens striker Aaron Connolly.

David has signed an 18 month contract and we would like to welcome him to Loch Park.

Glenafton travelled to face Kilbirnie Ladeside in the 2nd round of the West of Scotland Cup and kicked off the game with the same eleven that started against Troon last Saturday.

Both sides had created a couple of decent chances before the Glens made the breakthrough on 35 minutes after Ally Park blasted an unstoppable shot from the edge of box beyond the reach of keeper Kieran Hughes. The home side came close to equalising before the break only for Glens’ goalie Brian McGarrity to be the match of midfielder Kieran Brannan’s shot from 25 yards out.

Ladeside enjoyed a good start to the second half with only a goal-line clearance preventing them drawing level and later another fine save from McGarrity. The visitors too had their moments with the crossbar preventing their lead from being doubled and then later Hughes pulling off a find save from substitute Darren McGill. The game remained finely balanced until the Glens claimed their place in the 3rd round after substitute Jamie Hay slotted home a spot-kick in time added-on.

Troon 0 Glenafton 1

McBoookie.com West of Scotland League Super League Premier Division : Match 9

Saturday 12th December 2015, Portland Park, Troon

TROON 0 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 (0)

Glenafton made two changes to the starting 11 that defeated Shettleston a fortnight ago with Craig Menzies coming in for the unavailable Jamie Hay and Ryan McChesney for Jamie McGeoghegan, who left the club midweek to work down south. While included on the bench were Glenafton youth players Jack Hannah and Scott Davidson. With both sides enjoying decent winning streaks in the league, 3 games for Glens and 4 for Troon, (who also and boast a 100% home league record) expectations were high of a close encounter – and so it proved.

aa_a_train.jpg

Play in the first half flowed from end to end like the trains on the overlooking Glasgow-Ayr railway line that runs parallel to Portland Park with most of the attacks hitting the buffers before any clear cut chances could be engineered.

Troon took the early initiative and a good break down the left by Dale Moore ended with an over hit cross drifting well beyond the danger area. The same player won a free-kick 25 yards out after running into McChesney and with dead-ball expert Dean Keenan lining up alongside Chris McKnight to consider their options, the latter leathered it well wide of target. The first corner of the game also fell to Troon but Keenan the target at the near post was swamped by a posse of red shirts with Craig Menzies winning the ball and Joe Andrew mopping up.

aa_a_michaelwardrope.jpg

Michael Wardrope

Glens got their game on track and on 14 minutes came close when Craig McGuffie‘s free-kick from the right hand corner of the penalty box had former Glens keeper Ally Semple stretch to tip the ball over the bar. McGuffie’s angled shot from the ensuing short corner kick from the left was blocked and the loose ball quickly recovered by Dan Orsi to build an attack down the right which ended with the ball being whipped across the face of goal and McGuffie’s second bite at the cherry blocked by Colin Spence.

Play continued to ebb and flow from box to box with the visitors now looking the more threatening. On 24 minutes a cute back flick by Michael Wardrope was gathered by Orsi who advanced to the edge of the box before taking out a couple of defenders out of play with an angled pass to the overlapping Ally Park only for Keenan’s perfectly time tackled denying him a shot at goal. The resultant corner kick was cleared to safety.

aa_a_meikle01

Chris Meikle and Adam Forsyth

Troon responded with an excellent run through the middle by Dale Shirkie to set up a shot from 20 yard out which was deflected wide by the outstretched leg of an alert Chris Meikle. The corner kick was cleared by Park’s header and the ball taken from box to box through a lung bursting run by Menzies only for Troon to recover the ball and the counter-attack ending with a cross deep into the box where Alan Cairns got the better of McKnight. Soon after Meikle and McChesney double-teamed to prevent Adam Forsyth and Moore from fashioning a shot at goal forcing the latter to go wide and overhit another cross beyond the back post.

aa_a_jpboyle

John Paul Boyle & Chris McKnight

Glens finished the half strongly and although another corner kick was partially cleared the visitors quickly recovered the ball and Andrew turned Keenan in the box before clipping the ball to the back post where McChesney’s looping header was punched away by Semple before the whistle went for John Paul Boyle’s challenge on the keeper. An airborne Semple was then at full stretch as an Andrew angled shot whizzed past the post. In the last action of the half Orsi came within a whisker of connecting with a free-kick at the back post. HT Troon 0 Glens 0

The visitors started the second half very much in the same threatening manner they had finished the first. Boyle burst down the left to chase down an Andrew flick-on and roll the ball back to Cairns to launch it to the back post only for Morgan Brown to get a touch before the incoming Orsi could connect.

aa_a_alancairns

Alan Cairns closes down Garteh Armstrong

Glens quickly recovered the ball through Andrew tight on the right flank who then fed the overlapping Orsi to fire it across the goalmouth only for Armstrong to get the slightest of touches to prevent Boyle from tapping in from close range. The danger not yet over as a Glens’ throw-in set up another chance after Keenan’s headed clearance was trapped on the chest by McGuffie and his volley cannoned off Orsi’s back and the ball sailed over the bar.

aa_a_mcguffie_wardrope

Dynamic Duo

Some respite from Troon after possession was gained deep in the Glens’ half to allow Moore and Chatham to make tracks for the box only for Park to hunt them down and nick the ball for Meikle to clear and the telepathic pairing of Wardrope & McGuffie to gather and build another Glens attack. With no easy direct route into the box Troon tried a couple of crosses both of which were cleanly clutched by keeper Brian McGarrity.

aa_a_jpboyle_joe

JP and Joe Andrew with Gavin Collins

The visitors turned the screw again giving their hosts no peace (or goodwill) and seemed to be first and second to every ball with the darting runs by Boyle and the pressing of Andrew spearheading the waves of Afton attacks. The hard-working but now spent Spence was replaced by Jordan Muir and his fresh legs help set up a couple of half chances for Chatham that were snuffed out by McChesney & Meikle.

aa_a_goal

JP bullet homes

Glens made the breakthrough on 63 minutes and in some style with McGuffie the architect. Rolling the ball back with the sole of his boot he left Chatham stranded and following a quick turn he gained a head start on Armstrong for his dash to the box, aided by a touch from Park and Andrew to take the desperate duo of Keenan and Collins out of play. Now in the box McGuffie got his low drilled shot away before Armstrong’s tackle only for the advancing Semple to block the ball while the Glens midfielder kept his cool and quickly wheeled to clip the ball to the back post where the incoming John Paul Boyle stooped to bullet his header past Brown and into the gaping net.

aa_a_goal_celebs.jpg

JP and Ally Park enjoy the moment

Two minutes later Troon showed their teeth and Cairns beat Brown in the aerial battle for a free-kick into the box. Meikle then cut out Forsyth’s square ball destined for Chatham in the six yard box and ended Moore’s hope of making something of the loose ball with another timely clearance.
Scare over, Glens were soon back on the front foot! Semple had to race far out his box to beat Andrew to Boyle’s through ball with his defence posted missing. Wardrope’s clever pass then wrong-footed Collins to set Andrew off again and after outfoxing Keenan and McKnight thundered a shot from 22 yards out that flashed wide of the post. Midway through the half the striker sustained an injury while trying to catch out Semple with a looping header. He had to depart soon after and left to a great reception from the travelling support, to be replaced by former Troon forward Mick McCann.

aa_a_craigmcguffie

Craig McGuffie

The home side made a couple of changes with Shirkie making way for Sean McKenna and Chatham for Ross McCrea as Troon went in search of an equaliser. Fine play down the left by Muir set up a chance for McKenna but McChesney was more than a match with a perfectly timed tackle and Wardrope was on the spot to snap up the ball and set Boyle off on another attack. After another mazy run McGuffie tried his luck from distance but the shot was high and wide.

aa_a_brian

Brian in charge

At the other end a minor scare after McGarrity appeared to have lost the ball but panic over and normal service resumed as he bossed his packed six yard box and comfortably gathered another corner-kick. Troon continued to press while Glenafton defence continued to stand firm. The final whistle was greeted with raised arms by the men in red, jubilant that their endeavours across the length and breadth of the pristine Portland Park had been justly rewarded.
