SECTION 4: Match 1
Wednesday 27th July, Burnside Park, Muirkirk
MUIRKIRK JUNIORS 1 (0)
GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 6 (4)
Summer signing Gareth Campbell opened his account for the Glens in the first minute of the first competitive game of season. A long clearance from keeper Ally Semple was layed off by Gareth Armstrong for his namesake to smash home the first of four first half Glens’ goals. The visitors were well on top with the young Muirkirk team just hanging in . Chances were being created and going abegging when Gareth Armstrong met a coner at the near post and netted. Paul McKenziegot in on the act and netted after a good passing movement Yet another Ally clearance allowed Campbell to pass to Lewis Sloan who made no mistake in scoring on his competitive debut with a cracking volley. H/T Muirkirk 0 Glens 4
The home side came out the blocks and had a good 8 minutes spell and pulled a goal back after some slack Glens defensive play. Robbie Henderson was not amused and all and sundry felt the sharpness of the skipper’s tongue. He also showed the front men a thing or or too (two!) when through the half he rose above everyone to thunder home a header . Glens continued to press forward and Robbie Henderson scored a carbon copy header from yet another corner. F/T Muirkirk 1 Glens 6

Muirkirk Juniors gained entry into the Western League at the start of season 1938/39 by the narrow margin of a 10-8 vote. The first meeting between the two sides was a league match at Connel Park on 31st August 1938. A double from Boyle, a summer signing from Cumnock Juniors gave the Glens a narrow 2-1 win, their 9th out of 10th of the campaign.
The Glens beat Muirkirk 4-0 at Burnside Park in August 2005 en-route to defeating Cumnock Juniors in the Ardagh Cup final that season. Can you name the 5 Glens players celebrating one of the goals at Muirkirk?

Saturday 23rd July, 2011 Loch Park, New Cumnock
The Glens played host to St. Cuthbert Wanderers and Troon in the annual pre-season tournament named in honour of former president the late Joe Meldrum. The three 1 hour (30 minutes each way) game format kicked off with the home side facing the visitors from Kirkcudbright.
Disappointingly and in complete contrast to the bright sunshine that bathed Loch Park the game was a rather dull affair with both sides struggling to create any real chances from open play. Indeed even from set pieces there was little to concern either goalkeepeer although from a corner kick the visitors did conjure up a cheeky overhead kick-on on the six yard line that sneaked wide of Ally Semple’s back post. Paul McKenzie did raise the tempo of the game on occasion and a trademark run into the box, leaving a line of Wanderers in his wake, ended with shot from a few yards out being blocked on the line. Both sides made a number of changes at the break and indeed the Glens brought on all of their substitutes including young goalkeeper Ryan Dunsmuir. Matters improved slightly in the second half although it did seem there was more chance of rain than goal, of which a set-piece would surely be the more likely source. The Glens perhaps edged their opponents in the ‘corners-won’ department and Steven Greenlees came nearest to converting one of them into a goal but his header sailed over the bar.

Added interest in this game for the home support was the presence of former Glenafton players Jonathan Baillie, Graeme Barbour and Gary Robertson in the Troon starting eleven. More to the point, however the game was a much more open affair with spells of wave after wave of end to end play. In the first half delicately struck lob by Barbour from the edge of the box went just wide while at the other end goalkeeper Stuart Leavy pulled off a stunning save to push a header from the Saints towering centre-half past the post. Indeed Leavy went on to have a fine game, quick off his line and clutching safely or punching clear high balls into the box. The Cuddy’s broke the tournament’s duck ten minutes into the second half and no surprise that man-of-the-match live wire Paul McClymont putting the finishing touch to a goalmouth scramble and hit home what proved to be the match winner.
The Glens made one change from the starting eleven of the first match with Craig Menzies unavailable Richie McKillen came in at left back. Troon, who had rested several players from their first game introduced them for the showdown game. including Martin Ure, Dougie Ramsay and Tony Murphy another clutch of former Glenafton players, who were also joined by former Glens Boy Club player 16 year old Dale Moore.
Tangerine Troon were quick out the traps and had the Glens on the back foot in the opening minutes an early vindication perhaps of the ‘fresh legs’ strategy with Neil Sanderson, a summer signing from Dalry pulling the strings and Moore’s wing play catching the eye. However, the home side soon settled and Andy Bell began to boss the midfield and the runs of McKenzie and Lewis Sloan were causing concern for the seasiders. On 26 minutes a Gareth Armstrong header crashed off the post and Kris Mitchell’s attempt to drive the rebound home bounced off the surface and over the bar. Two minutes later Dougie Ramsay impeded the Glens forward (trialist) just inside Troon’s half. Quick thinking by Bell and Craig McEwan caught Troon cold and set up Paul McKenzie to strike home from 20 yards out. H/T Glens 1 Troon 0
Within 8 minutes of the re-start the home side doubled their lead. Armstrong was fouled close to the right hand touch line 25 yards or so from goal and although the ball fell kindly for the Trialist the referee stopped play for the free-kick. The despairing cries of ‘play advantage’ from the terracing were soon replaced with whoops of delight as Paul McKenzie cracked the free-kick past the wall and into the top corner of the post they were guarding with the goalie a spectator. With the passage of another 8 minutes came an equally cracking finish. Ryan McChesney whipped a diagonal ball from the right into the far side of the penalty box where Gareth Armstrong met it first time and thundered it into the roof of the net. To their credit Troon didn’t capitulate in the heat and continue to carve out chances. Sanderson almost pulled one back with a great run through the middle but Semple ran from his line to block before the trigger was fired. Another dangerous break set up Murphy but he sliced his shot wide. With 8 minutes remaining Dale Moore finished off a great run by eluding a block from Stuart Currie and drilling the ball home at the near post for a Troon consolation . F/T Glens 3 Troon 1

AIRDRIE UNITED XI 2 GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 0
Glenafton more than matched an Airdrie side comprising a mix of first team regulars and U19 squad members for much of this keenly contested match. The surface may have been artificial (although of stunning quality) but the effort on the pitch and desire to win from both sides were the real deal. The Glens introduced new signing Lewis Sloan in left midfield and up front Jim Wilson partnered a Trialist forward, who had greatly impressed in the Annbank game.
The visitors started brightly in the light and shadow that bathed the pitch in equal measure with Paul McKenzie dancing his way past a string of Diamond defenders but his shot at goal was blocked in time. The home side forced the first corner of the game minutes later but didn’t trouble Ally Semple in the Glens’ goal, and so emerged a pattern of end to end play. On 16 minutes the Glens’ Trialist powered his way to the edge of the box but his equally powerful blast at goal was brilliantly tipped over the bar by the agile Airdrie stopper in acrobatic fashion. Midway through the half the home side passed up a couple of carbon copy chances to take the lead. Fine work down the left flank followed by neat cut backs into the box failed to be finished off by the front men and the impressive Craig Menzies ably supported by Ryan McChesney mopped up the danger. Soon after Menzies and Airdrie’s new signing John Boyle accidentally collided and the former Talbot star’s game was over. Three minutes later after a head knock Richie McKillen followed suit, blood streaming over his head like raspberry over a cornetto, soon to be stopped by a stitch or two at Monklands hospital.
Ten minutes from the break Wilson fired a terrific diagonal cross from tight on the left touch line over the top of the home guard and McKenzie was millimetres away from tapping in at the back post. A minute later Airdrie took a more direct route and some slick passing cut the Glens defence open allowing the ball to be played to an unmarked Danny Burns who fired home into the far corner with some style. Five minutes later McKenzie nearly drew the sides level. Picking up a Kris Mitchell (who had a outstanding game) pass he twisted and turned at the edge of the box leaving three defenders to watch his angled lob beat the keeper but crash off the junction of post and bar. The home side went up the park and as neither attacker nor defender gave quarter in their attempts to free the ball from the bye-line young McChesney was penalised for shirt-pulling, his claims that his own top had suffered a similar fate went unheeded and Paul Lovering sent Semple the wrong way from the spot kick. H/T Airdrie 2 Glens 0
The second half started the way of the first with Taz McKenzie testing the keeper but a corner kick the only reward. On 52 minutes the tireless Trialist forged his way down the the right, holding off defenders, before picking out Wilson in the box whose knock-on header fell for Lewis Sloan who gathered the ball well but his shot cannoned off a defender and looped over the bar. The home side rallied well and in particular one of the second half subs was proving a handful down the right wing with some skillful play but more often than not the final ball was not of the same quality.
The Glens were still carving out chances of their own, the best of this half coming on 63 minutes. McKenzie, again the architect, splitting the defence with a ball played at the perfect pace into the box where Stuart Currie’s first time shot was kicked clear by the keeper. Currie retrieved the loose ball wide on the right and quickly fired it back into the box where a Taz overhead kick was met by the Trialist who crouched to head home, only for the ball to go over the bar. Minutes later a nasty tumble ended the Trialist’s impressive contribution was over. Good-spirited Airdrie (diamond geezers), allowed him to be replaced by Jim Wilson who had already been substituted. The home side finished the match the stronger but couldn’t add to their tally as the Glens defence, marshalled well by Menzies stood firm . F/T Airdrie 2 Glens 0
A decent showing from the Glens with Paul McKenzie in sparkling form, Craig Menzies solid in defence. Kris Mitchell in particular had an oustanding match , showing a great touch, not one to shirk a tackle and not too shabby in the air as well.
