KELLO ROVERS 1 (1)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 3 (2)

Glenafton gave starting places to summer signings keeper Blair Lochhead and full backs Kyle McAusland and Andrew Hunter for the trip to Kello who numbered former Glens’ players Ryan Dunsmuir and Scott Caldwell in their ranks.

aa_newsignings

After a slow start the hosts got into their stride with slick one-touch passing to move the ball with some style from box to box. They also enjoyed the best of the early chances with Lochhead pulling off a point blank save from a close range header as the Rovers threatened from a series of corner-kicks. On 12 minutes Liam Fleming’s angled shot from inside the box screamed over the bar.

In the meantime Glens had been making decent progress down both flanks, attacks initiated by Hunter and McAusland respectively, without converting it into goalmouth pressure, until the 18th minute. Darren McGill gathered the ball on the left and played a one-two with Joe Andrew before bursting into the box, slicing his way through a sandwich of Kello defenders and guiding the ball past the outrushing Dunsmuir and into the net.

aa_a_goal01

The visitors pressed for a second and David Gray’s screamer from 25 yards had Dunsmuir at full stretch to usher the ball inches over the bar. Ross Ballantyne repeated the feat ar the other end his shot blazing over the bar at the former gas-works end. Five minutes before the break, as the Glens tried to build another attack from the back, Ballantnye pounced on a loose pass and from a tight angle lashed a daisy cutter past the keeper and into the far corner of the net to draw the sides level.

aa_DSC_2834 Dunsmuir pulled off a fine reflex save from Ryan McChesney as he tried to bullet a header home at the near post from a corner kick . Back came the visitors to restore their lead on 43 minutes. Dan Orsi forced his way down the right flank before picking out Andrew in the box to roll the ball on its way into the path of Cameron Marlow to fire the ball from 15 yards out through a ruck of players beyond the unsighted keeper.

H/T Kello 1 Glenafton 2

Glenafton raised the tempo of their play after the restart and pushed forward in waves of attacks. McGill and Mick McCann combined in the box to set up Marlow only for his shot  to be pushed away by Dunsmuir, the keeper now constantly on his toes. Just after the hour mark the visitors made a triple substitution with Andrew, Marlow and Orsi making way for Ally Park, Chris Dallas and close-season signing Ryan Borris. Before the fresh-legs were stretched the Rovers served notice that they were still vety much in the game after Graeme Ramage tried his luck from 30 yards only for the ball to fly past the keeper and just wide of the junction of post and bar.

On 66 minutes the Glens doubled their lead after some fantastic build up play between Hunter (putting in a great shift) and McGill down the left flank.  Hunter’s final contribution was the finest of touches that took two defenders instantly out of play to leave McGill with a seemingly a free run into the box only for centre back Liam Weir to cut across and clip the heels of the Afton midfielder. Mick McCann stepped up and slotted the spot kick home.

aa_a_goal04

Glenafton’s fresh legs now kicked in and Borris and Park were exploiting the space in the home defence to good effect while at the other end McChesney and Chris Meikle were fending off the less frequent attack from Rovers. The visitors continued to breach Kello’s box and although McCann came close with an overhead kick and Dallas with a glancing header there was to be no more scoring.

IRVINE MEADOW 3 (1)

  • Meadow win 3-1 penalties

Glenafton made three changes to the side that started against Auchinleck on Monday night with Dan Orsi, Cameron Marlow and Chris Dallas replacing Jamie Hay, Joe Andrew and Chris McGuffie. John Paul Boyle and Ally Park remained side-lined through injury.

Although the Glens were first to threaten through an early corner-kick that was cleared it was the visitors that took the lead in 3 minutes after breaking down another Glens attack.  The ball was played across field to Gary McCann and in a flash the winger arrived at the bye-line to whip a wicked a wicked ball across the face of goal and although keeper Brian McGarrity managed to push it on the bar the ball fell perfectly for Paul Maxwell to hammer home.

aa_a_goal01.jpg

Paul Maxwell opens the scoring

On 12 minutes Meadow mopped up a Glens free kick played into their box and the ball cleared upfield where it was gathered by Liam Finnigan who made a bee-line for goal only for the back chasing Cameron Marlow to time his tackle at the edge of the box to perfection. Two minutes later the menacing McCann left the Glens defence for dead again and his cut back from the dead ball line was met at the near post by Maxwell but his cut attempt to deflect the ball home was blocked by the legs of McGarrity and the loose ball cleared by Ryan McChesney.

David Gray & Cameron Marlow with Adam Strachan

At the other end David Gray’s free kick from the edge of the box beat the wall only to be pushed over the bar by keeper Daniel Tobin and again the corner-kick was cleared. The home continued to press for the equaliser and in 26 minutes had the ball in the net. Dan Orsi made good progress down the right and played a one-two with Mick McCann in the box before picking out Cameron Marlow who fired a low shot from 15 yards that Tobin couldn’t hold and Chris Dallas pounced to thump the ball home only to be flagged offside. Five minutes later Gray’s thunderbolt from 25 yards out fizzed wide of the post.  Tobin then cut out a cross from Darren McGill before launching the ball upfield where G. McCann tried the unfamiliar route of through the middle. He twisted past Gray , then gave Chris Meikle the slip before losing his balance as he broke into the box and Craig Menzies blocked his passage to goal.

On 42 minutes Gray’s free kick into a packed box was met by the head of Orsi and the ball seemed destined for the top far corner of the goal only for Tobin at full stretch to pull off a great save before pushing the loose ball away from Dallas but could do little to stop Mick McCann from clipping the ball home at the far post.

Mick McCann makes it 1-1

Meadow responded well and Maxwell met a corner kick full and his powerful header thundered wide of the post. Former Glenafton player Adam Strachan chipped a free kick into the box and after some Meadow head tennis McGarrity did well to cleanly clutch the ball.

H/T Glens 1 Meadow 1

The Glens keeper was soon back in action after the break rising above Maxwell to grab Strachan’s free kick to back post and then later clawing the same player’s cross from under the cross bar before double-teaming with McChesney to prevent Maxwell benefiting from the loose ball.

The home side then enjoyed an intense spell of pressure winning no less than four corner-kicks in quick succession.  However, the visitors broke that spell on 56 minutes after the Glens surrendered possession in the middle of the park with the ball snapped up Liam Flannigan who powered forward into the right hand side of the box and fired a low angled drive beyond into the far corner of the net.

Liam Finnigan celebrates

The home side were back level within two minutes when Gray whipped a corner kick to the near post and Dan Orsi’s header from 3 yard out bulged into the net with the keeper rooted to his line.

aa_a_goal04.jpg

Dan’s header finds the net

With their tails up and Meadow’s heads down the home side were now very much on the front foot and front line freshened up with Joe Andrew replacing Chris Dallas. On 69 minutes Andrew played a slick one-two with the overlapping Menzies to take the ball to the bye-line and pick out McGill in the middle of the box. The midfielder killed the ball dead and set up the shot perfectly only for it to be blocked by the brave defender and partially cleared before back came the Glen. Menzies again the architect bursting into the right hand corner of the box before blasting a shot that was pushed out by Tobin. The ball fell for Andrew some 15 yards out and his looping header seemed net-bound only for Tobin to get airborne and push the ball over the bar with the save of the match. Another brace of corner-kicks followed as the Glens continued to turn up the heat and later introduced Craig McGuffie for Dan Orsi.

With 10 minutes to go Meadow took the lead for the third time in the cup-tie. Gary McCann and Finnigan combined well down the right before slipping the ball into the box for Stuart McCann to wrong foot the Glens defence and slot a low angled drive into the far post, in a style similar to Finnegan’s goal.

aa_a_goal05.jpg

Stuart McCann makes it 3-2

Credit to Meadow there was no attempt to run down the clock and indeed they created a couple of half chances either of which could have killed the tie. There was to be a sting in the tail in the last minute when Cameron Marlow caught the Meadow defence cold to run through on goal an on reaching the corner of the six yard box slotted the ball past Tobin and into the net.

aa_a_goal06.jpg

There was to be no further scoring and on to penalties.

McGill fired the Glens ahead in the shoot-out before McGarrity saved Finnigan’s spot-kick. But fortunes soon changes as Tobin stopped McGuffie’s efforts, McChesney hit the post and Gray hit the bar while the visitors three attempts were faultless.

AUCHINLECK TALBOT 2 (1)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 0 (0)

Glenafton made two changes to the side that started against Pollok on Saturday with Chris Meikle and Jamie Hay replacing Dan Orsi and Cameron Marlow.

The first real chance in the game fell to the home side on 13 minutes when Kier Milliken picked out Graham Wilson and although he managed to clip the ball beyond the reach of keeper Brian McGarrity at the near post it slipped inches of the far post with the net gaping. At the other end Mick McCann’s header from a Craig McGuffie corner-kick looped over the bar.

Midway through the half Talbot won a free kick on the edge of the box and after the kick rebounded off the wall the ball was recovered and played in for Wilson who slotted home from an offside position. However, soon after on 24 minutes a misplaced pass so the ball fly the left wing and the alert Wilson tear after it and in flash lob the ball over the head of McGarrity into the far corner with an exquisite finish.

Auchinleck 1-0

The visitors began to push forward and McCann made excellent progress down the right to the deadball line before whipping the ball across the face of goal which was misjudged by keeper Andy Leishman before landing at the feet of Joe Andrew only for his shot to be deflected wide for a corner-kick which concluded with Ryan McChesney header going wide of target.  Leishmann later held a low angled shot from McCann and smothered an attempt by Andrew as the Glens pushed for the equaliser.

HT Auchinleck 1 Glens 0

The hosts began the second half brightly without fashioning a clear shot at goal . The Glens gradually found their feet with the runs of McGuffie catching the eye and yet their only rewards were corner-kicks that failed to threaten the Talbot goal.

Midway through the half and the visitors were again the architects of their own downfall with possession given away cheaply in the middle of the park and the ball snapped up by William Boyd to burst into the box and finish in some style from the tightest of angles.

Half chances came and went at either end and although McCann slipped the ball beyond the outrushing Leishman and into the Talbot net the striker had been flagged offside.

Glenafton made one change to the side that started against Hurlford on Monday night with Craig McGuffie replacing Jamie Hay for the trip to Scottish Junior Cup finalists Pollok.

The home side broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval after a short corner kick was whipped into the heart of the box for the incoming Paul Gallacher to bullet home a header. Two goals in a three minute spell midway through the second half effectively settled the match in Pollok’s favour. A break down the right ended with Liam Rowan picking up a slick back-heel and burst into the box before slamming home a low angled shot. Another fine passage of play down the right saw Robbie Winters try the same approach as Rowan only for  Brian McGarrity to block his shot but the keeper could do little to stop  Davie Winters slam home the rebound

Glenafton made two changes to the side that started against Meadow on Wednesday night with Alan Cairns and Dan Orsi replacing Jamie McGeoghegan and Craig McGuffie.

Both sides had some decent chances before Chris Dallas broke the deadlock on 38 minutes after the Glens striker gathered a through ball before running in on goal firing a low angled shot into the net.

Ten minutes after the restart the home side were reduced to 10 men after Jamie Hay received a second yellow card. The ten man dug deep and Ladeside limited to a few chances and indeed Glens almost double their lead only for Darren McGill’s shot from outside the box to crash over the crossbar. The visitors came close to equalising only for Brian McGarrity to pull off a great save from a close range shot from Adam Forde and his defenders block the attempt to bury the loose ball. With the game still on a knife edge Ladeside were reduced to 10 men after a rash tackle from Caolann McAleer produced a second yellow card from the referee. In the closing minute the Glens repelled another Kilbirnie, broke upfield in numbers and set up Chris Dallas to bag his brace and seal the points.

A fantastic performance from the Glens who lost Cameron Marlow and his replacement John Paul Boyle to bad injuries during the game.

Glenafton made one change to the starting line-up that faced Petershill on Saturday with John Paul Boyle replacing the injured Mick McCann up front.

In a game of few chances it was Auchinleck that secured all three points with a goal in each half. Good play deep in the left hand side of the Glens box by Kier Milliken ended with the ball being clipped to the back post for Graham Wilson to ghost in and guide the ball home.  Soon after the restart Dwayne Hyslop lashed home an unstoppable free kick from the edge of the box into the top right had corner of the net.

Glenafton made a number of changes to the starting eleven that faced Ardeer Thistle in midweek. Back came Brian McGarrity in goal for David Buchanan and Joe Andrew replaced Chris Dallas upfront. In defence Jamie McGeoghegan, now working in London, made a surprise return to the club with Chris Meikle a late injury scare not making the line-up. Jamie partnered Ryan McChesney while Cameron Marlow filled the unfamiliar left-back slot and what a shift he put in.

The mid-week summer-like heat had been replaced with a cold sharp wind as the blue- shirted North Glasgow team kicked-off against the red tops of the New Cumnock side. A couple of half chances came and went at either end before the Glens were forced to make an early change after Mick McCann pulled up and was replaced with Chris Dallas after 10 minutes.

Two minutes later the visitors were unfortunate not to take the lead after great feet by Ciaran McElroy unzipped the Glens defence before he angled a cracking shot from 23 yards out only for the ball to thunder off the cross bar. Petershill retrieved the ball and Jordon Chisholm wide on the right whipped the ball across the face of goal and although Peter Bradley did well to connect with the ball first time his shot sailed high and wide of target.

Ciaran McElroy (No 7) hits the bar !

Glenafton hit the woodwork two minutes later after David Gray’s free-kick from 25 yard out on the right hand side of the box beat the wall but crashed off the post. On 16 minutes Dallas turned the Peasy defence before being brought down at the left hand corner of the box. The ball was clipped to the back post where Ally Park’s downward header was pounced on by Dan Orsi and from the tightest of angles his shot cannoned off the base of the aforementioned post. The home side kept up the pressure and Dallas picked out Craig McGuffie and his snapshot flew wide of the post.

aa_a_dallas

Chris Dallas

Peasy applied a period of sustained pressure without penetrating their opponents’ box as the Glens back-line defended manfully. The game was punctuated with a series of free kicks at either end which failed to create any openings to seriously test either keeper.

On 25 minutes McChesney broke down a Peasy attack at the edge of the box and quickly released the ball upfield for McGuffie to gather and push forward to create a three v two situation with Joe Andrew and Dallas matching his run. The midfielder opted to go for goal and his curled shot from 20 yards pulled off a great save from keeper FrancisHughes who managed with an outstretched arm to thumb the ball wide for a corner kick that was eventually cleared.

aa_a_craigmcguffie.jpg

Craig McGuffie

At the other end the ball fell to James Brough in space, deep in the right hand side of the box but his well struck his shot flashed well wide of the far post. Jordan Kennedy then tried his luck from 25 yards and although his shot was on target it lacked in power to bother keeper Brian McGarrity. The home side finished the half the stronger in terms of possession but in keeping with the rest of the game chances were thin on the groundwork.

H/T Glens 0 Petershill 0

The early encounters of the new half quickly adopted the pattern of its predecessor with each side enjoying pulses of pressure. Dallas’s mobility kept the Peasy defence on its toes while at the other Jordan Lynas and Stevenson combined to set up Michael Daly but his shot from close range was clutched cleanly by McGarrity. This proved to be last of the action for Lynas and he was replaced by Stephen McGladrigan.

aa_a_joe.jpg

Joe Andrew holds off Fraser Chisholm

On 58 minutes McElroy’s cross from the left into a packed penalty box was headed clear by Park who then combined with Marlow to switch the ball to Craig Menzies on the right to start a Glenafton counter-attack which ended with McGuffie winning a corner, which came to nothing.

Dallas never gave up the ghost to chase down a ball to the dead-ball line and loft it high into the box only for Hughes to leap and catch as Andrew and McGuffie closed in. McGarrity matched his counterpart with a good leap to gather the ball from the head of Daly. The keeper launched the ball upfield and after the bounce deceived centre back Fraser Chisholm the alert Dallas met it first time at the edge of the box to lash it goalward and Hughes did well to push it out for a corner. Although the kick was well defended Peasy, it was only partially cleared and Glens were now very much on the front foot with the visitors pegged back in their own half.

The best effort in this this period came courtesy of McGuffie on 65 minutes with a diagonal shot from outside the box that whizzed past the post. Two minutes later Dallas was clearly struggling and left the field to a great reception by the home support and was replaced by John Paul Boyle.

aa_a_dan01

Dan Orsi

Boyle was soon in the thick of it and after gathering a Marlow throw on the left switched the ball to Orsi on the right who cutely rolled the ball in the box for the incoming Park but his pop at goal skewed wide of target. At the other end former Glenafton player Chris Malone lobbed a neat ball to the back post for Daly only for Menzies to win the aerial battle and McGarrity scoop up the loose ball.

The keeper launched the ball up the park and Andrew with Brough in close attendance headed it back to Orsi who took a touch or two before returning it Andrew, now advanced to the corner of box with his shadow Brough still attached. After hooking the ball to Boyle, lurking in the D, he shook of his shadow before gathering the return pass, that had taken  out three defenders, and squared the ball across the face of goal which although was out of the reach of Orsi was met at the back post by John Paul Boyle to guide home from 3 yards. An excellent move just rewarded to give the Glens the lead on 77 minutes.

aa_a_goal.jpg

John Paul tees up the goal

Tails up the Glens pressed forward and McGuffie slipped the ball into the box for Andrew who guided it into the danger area for Boyle but Malone was well placed to marshal the ball to safety.  Gray then gathered the ball deep In the Peasy half before breaking forward and driving a low shot from 25 yards inches wide of the post. The midfielder then picked up the pieces of another Peasy attack broken down by McChesney and McGeoghegan and drove up the midfield only to be upended by a two footed challenge by Fraser Chisholm. The defender’s pleas that he won the ball, which he did, were not enough to avoid the straight red card for the severity of the challenge.

aa_a_davidgray

Davide Gray with Chessy & Zee

Two minutes later the impressive Bradley clipped a free kick from the left hand corner of the penalty box to the back post for Daly and although McGarrity crouched to get the ball it slipped momentarily from both hands before he got a stronger hand to it, every blue shirt in the vicinity claiming the ball had crossed the line; the red shirts claiming otherwise. To add to the confusion there was a pause in proceedings, however the ball was considered to be still in play.

aa_a_goaloff

Peasy appeal

As play resumed Orsi gave McElroy the slip on the half way, line tight on the touchline, to open up a free run on goal and perhaps frustration clouded McElroy’s decision making as he clearly gave up the chase and from behind swiped the legs from Orsi.  A melee followed and when the dust settled the referee had no option but to send McElroy packing. He then flashed a yellow card to both Menzies and Stevenson – a second yellow for him – and so the red card followed quickly and Petershill were down to 8 men.

aa_a_brian

Brian clutches Daly’s header

When play resumed Petershill were first to test the keeper with Daly’s looping header held by McGarrity. At the other end Park thundered a shot just wide of target and Orsi’s cut back across the face of goal had just a touch too much pace to connect with Boyle or Andrew.
