GLENS SINK SEASIDERS

Glenafton made three changes to the eleven that started against Clydebank last Saturday with Kyle McAusland, Dale Moore and Ryan Nisbet coming in for Dan Orsi, Lee Gallacher and Mick McCann. On the bench was young striker Matthew Reilly who has joined the club on a loan deal from the St.Mirren.

The home side opened the scoring on 8 minutes after Findlay Frye robbed Troon of the ball wide on the right before cutting inside and riding a tackle at the edge of the box which saw the ball break free and Ryan Nisbet brilliantly bring it under control taking two defenders out of play before slipping it to Ally Park  (left) to beat the offside trap and lash the ball high into the net from 15 yards. Glens enjoyed the best of the remaining chances in the half. Park came within a whisker of bagging a brace but was inches away from making contact with a great ball into the box to tap from a few yards while late Dale Moore’s lob over the advancing keeper drifted inches wide of the post.

HT Glens 1 Troon 0

Keeper Scott Johnstone’s outstretched leg stopped Ryan Nisbet from doubling the host’s lead after being set up by Moore. The visitors drew level on 54 minutes after a great ball into the box took out on the defence allowing Dylan Pooler to chase down the ball and slot it beyond keeper David Wilson as he charged from his line.

Two minutes later the Glens drew level in clinical fashion. Frye from the centre circle lofted a high ball to right hand edge of the penalty box where Park leapt to send a cushioned header to the edge of the six-yard box and a bounce later Joe Andrew crashed the ball into the net.

Play was flowing back and forth with both sides creating some decent chances and the game was still very much in the balance. On 77 minutes Troon won a corner on the right but the out swinging kick drifted out the box and in a flash Kyle McAusland threaded a fantastic ball upfield  between two defenders on the half way line while a third played substitute Matthew Reilly onside leaving him free to gather the ball and charge upfield where he kept his cool to round the advancing keeper and slot the ball into the empty net for a fantastic debut goal.

Although other chances came and went for both sides there was no further scoring.

Prior to kick-off a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the 69th  anniversary of the Knockshinnoch Disaster in which 13 miners lost their lives at Knockshinnoch Castle Colliery on 7th September 1950.

Glens kicked off with the same starting eleven that won at Pollok last Saturday. In Bankies line-up was former Glenafton midfielder Conor Lynass while in the dug-out was former Glenafton player Gordon Moffat taking over as boss following the departure of former Glenafton player / coach Kieran McAnespie.

Glens were first to show on 5 minutes from a corner kick that was headed clear to the “D” for Craig Pettigrew to leather a shot first time which was deflected out for a throw. This too was headed clear and the ball fell for Mick McCann only for his shot from inside to be blocked before Cameron Marlow hammered a low shot forcing a fine save from keeper Marc Waters. Although Joe Andrew gathered the loose ball deep in the box and rolled it back to Dan Orsi his shot drifted wide of the far post.

Bankies enjoyed some pressure down the right flank with Cammy McClair in the thick of things without however creating any real chances.

Former Bankie Joe Andrew on the ball

The Glens were seeing a lot of the ball in the middle of the park but making inroads into the box was proving more difficult. On 15 minutes Dan Orsi and Lee Gallacher combined down the right and with no way through the latter was forced to retreat before curling a shot from 20 yards out which sailed wide of target.

Waters launched the ball upfield and a knock-on from Chris Black saw Conor Lynass chase the ball into box only for the alert David Wilson to rush from his line and steal the ball from midfielder’s feet.

At the other end another neat passage of play saw Ally Park, Andrew and McCann move the ball from the right to the left-hand side of the box where although Gallacher only for the midfielder to be stripped of the ball which was then duly thumped upfield.

Midway through the half the visitors carved out a good chance with a fine move. Liam Rowan played a ball through the middle for Nicky Little to gather and slip quickly to McClair on the right to push into before whipping the ball across the face of the goal but neither the inrushing Little or Lynass could connect.

Bankies then stoutly defended a Glens free-kick and quickly broke upfield with a series of sharp passes that ended with McClair skipping past a defender before Craig Menzies prevented him breaching the box with a strong tackle at the edge of the box. Little snapped up the loose ball to win a corner which was cleared through a diving header by Alan Cairns at the near post.

The visitors continued to press with Black winning the ball just inside the Glens’ half where he slotted a pass into the box for Jordan Shelvey to chase down where he narrowly won the race to get the first touch on the ball as Wilson rushed off his line to dive at his feet. On 29 minutes Nick Little stepped up to take the spot kick only for the young keeper to get down low and pull off a terrific stop before smothering the loose ball as McClair closed in.

bb_DSC_2755.JPG

David Wilson saves the spot kick

Glens responded with a Mick McCann effort that was well saved by Waters. Another Bankies break followed immediately with Lynass releasing McClair free wide on the right only for Wilson foil him on the bye-line at the expense of a corner which the keeper cleanly clutched.

Glens captain Craig Menzies then got involved up front collecting a ball from McCann on the edge of “D” before slipping past a defender into the box only for his low angled shot from 15 yards finishing inches wide of the post.

Five minutes from the break Gallacher, wide on the left, released Alan Cairns on the overlap to drive to the bye-line and whip a wicked ball into the box for McCann only for Waters show a safe pair hands, securely grabbing the ball under the bar. In the closing action a Glens corner eventually fell to Cammy Marlow in the heart of the “D” only for his delicate chip to drift wide of goal

HT Glens 0 Clydebank 0

Bankies were soon on the front foot with a Lynass effort from outside the box sailing high over the bar and them Shelvey picking out Little at the edge of the box only for Pettigrew to execute a well- timed tackle to avert the danger. Glens responded through McCann and Cairns down the left winning a corner kick that was headed clear by Black.

On 50 minutes the visitors took the lead after Wilson, under pressure from Little, miskicked his attempt to launch the ball upfield and the Bankies’ midfielder snapped up the ball and rolled it perfectly into the path of the incoming Jordan Shelvey to keep his calm and place the ball into the net from 16 yards out.

Jordan Shelvey puts the Bankies ahead

The young keeper recovered quickly and from a corner-kick he got down to dave McClair’s close range shot.

A host of substitutions followed with injuries forcing Bankies to replace Chris lack with Ross Alexander and Glens bring on Kyle McAusland for Craig Menzies. The home side made further changes with Dale Moore and Ryan Nisbet replacing Joe Andrew and Lee Gallacher while Bankies later brought on Kyle Munro for Conor Lynass.

bb_DSC_3118

Kyle Munro and Ally Park

Nisbet’s determined run to the bye-line earned the Glens a corner kick which was headed well clear before Moore lofted the ball back deep into the box which Waters leapt high to grab with both hands.

The Bankies came close on 73 minutes triggering a spell of decent chances after McClair’s cross from wide on the right was met square on by the head of Kyle Munro only for the ball to dip inches over the bar. Wilson then pushed a low shot from Michael Bailey round the post before punching away the corner kicked that followed and the loose ball volleyed over the bar.  Following another Bankies break away Munro fashioned a low drilled shot from the right-hand side of the box which Wilson dived to stop and then clutch the loose ball short of the line.

Meanwhile Glens were struggling to get the better of a well-drilled Bankies defence either from open play or set pieces.  Bankies tried to reinforce that position by bringing defender Andy Paterson for the lively Cammy McClair.

Dale Moore sets up last minute chance.

Yet, on the final minute of the regulation time Moore brilliantly killed a ball into the box before thumping a volley from just outside the corner of the six yard box only for the flawless Waters pull off a super block and his defenders combine to clear the loose ball.

Pollok 2 Glenafton 3

  • Newlandsfield Park, Glasgow
  • Pollok 2 (1)
    • Evans (2)
  • Glenafton Athletic 3 (1)
    • o.g., Gallacher, Moore

The Glens were twiced pegged by Pollok but never gave up the chase and were rightly rewarded with a last minute winner to return with the three points from Newlandsfield to New Cumnock.

Glens made two changes to the eleven that started in the victory over Cumnock Juniors last Saturday. With keeper Craig Burns unavailable for selection the Glens gave a debut to 18 year old David Wilson a midweek signing from St. Mirren while captain Craig Menzies returned to the centre of defence in place of Kyle McAusland, also unavailable for selection.

In Pollok’s starting line-up was former Glenafton striker Chris Dallas who recently joined the Newlandsfield club after the Loch Park side had reluctantly released him from his contract in June.

It was Dallas that set up the home side’s first chance after chasing a long ball down the left-hand side to cut it back for the incoming Stuart McCann to hit a sweet strike from the 18 yard line that debutant David Wilson took the sting out off with both hands before recovering the loose ball.

The visitors responded with a corner kick that was flicked on by the head of Dan Orsi in the heart of the six yard box and then met by the inrushing Craig Pettigrew only for his header to be blocked at the back post at the expense corner which came to nothing.

Alan Cairns robbed Grant Evans as he tried to break forward from the half way line and quickly switched play from left to right by picking out Dan Orsi to drive into the box and lash an angled shot whizzing over the bar.

Evans pushing forward curled a ball into the box that Shaun Fraser did well to kill with his chest before lashing a shot that smacked off the base of the post.

Keeper Josh Lumsden launched a long ball upfield that Fraser laid off to Dallas only for Cairns to make a determined block on the 18 yard line and although the loose ball fell kindly for the ‘Lok striker he dragged his shot well wide of target. Dallas then slipped a neat ball to match Del Esplin’s run into the box but with only the keeper to beat he sliced his shot wide.

At the other end Pettigrew cracked a free kick from 25 yards that beat the wall and keeper at full stretch only for it to whiz inches wide.

Three minutes before the break Glenafton made the breakthrough courtesy of an own goal from the unfortunate Danny Boyle. It began with another long ball launched up the middle for Dallas but he was beaten in the air by Cammy Marlow who headed it upfield where Mick McCann headed back to Lee Gallacher to gather and square for Marlow, still deep in his own half, to clip a long ball up the left for Joe Andrew to chase. However, Boyle, with a head start, initially looked certain to usher the ball safely into the box as his keeper rushed to the corner of the six yard box but with Andrew hunting him down indecision descended and he clipped the ball back to Lumsden but at an angle and pace that wrong footed the goalie who despite an outstretched leg could not prevent the ball rolling into the empty net.

In the last action of the half the home side drew level when a wicked free kick was fired into a packed penalty box for Grant Evans to make a great connection and bulge the net from six yards out.

HT Pollok 1 Glens 1

aa_lee_gallacherThe visitors quickly made amends and regained the lead three minutes after the restart. Cairns’ long throw from the left was knocked on by Andrew and gathered at the outskirts of the box by McCann who held off Esplin before slipping the ball wide to Lee Gallacher (left) in space where a touch or two wrong-footed defender Danny McKenzie before he curled a sublime ball from the 18 yard line into the top left hand top corner of the net. The celebration for his first goal for the wasn’t too shabby either!

Although both sides put some good passing moves together neither could conjure up any chances that seriously threatened the keepers. However on 80 minutes Pollok equalised with a freak goal.  A ball whipped into the box was headed clear by Craig Menzies that was then chested down by Orsi tight on the touchline and rolled back towards Pettigrew, however the forceful challenge from Grant Evans sent both players falling to the ground and the ball into orbit before re-entering in the heart of the goalmouth and over Wilson’s head and into the net.

Glens picked themselves up and pressed for the winner. Substitute Dale Moore clipped a great ball over the heads of the Lok defence for fellow substitute Ryan Nisbet to chase down the ball and square across the goal mouth for the incoming Gallacher to fire for goal only for a great tackle to divert it wide for a corner. Although Lumsden got a fist to it the ball fell for Pettigrew and his shot was deflected wide for another corner which concluded with Andrew’s shot from 10 yards being blocked.

aa_a_dalemoore00The visitors pressure finally paid off and was rewarded with a wonderful last-minute goal. Nisbet robbed Evans of the ball on the left hand touchline and held off the defender’s attempt recover it before cutting infield and threading a glorious 20 yard pass to Orsi at the right hand corner of the penalty box. Although McKenzie cut out his attempt to feed Ally Park on the overlap the ball bounced back infield for Dale Moore (left)to trap with his left foot before thumping a low shot with his right from 25 yards that took one bounce in the box before beating the keeper low at his right hand post.

Cliché time a goal worthy of winning any match.

Prior to kick-off a minute’s silence in memory of Matt Spiers former Secretary of the Ayrshire and West Regions of Junior football, a true stalwart of the junior game.

aa_minutes_silence_matt_spiers_00

Glens made one change to the side that kicked off at Hurlford mid-week with Cameron Marlow replacing the suspended Ryan McChesney. Both Dale Moore and Ryan Nisbet were unavailable for selection.

Although the Glens had concerns over Craig Burns who was unwell before kick-off the keeper dealt manfully with Cumnock’s early attacks by cleanly clutching Alan Miller’s low ball to the near post; comfortably collecting Chris Campbell’s effort from inside the box and then cut out another cross into the box from Miller.

Glens countered through Alan Cairns on the left floating a ball into the box where a Mick McCann header deflected off Stevie Crawford for a corner-kick which although won in the air by Alan Murdoch the ball fell for McCann only for his shot to loop over the bar.

On 8 minutes Craig Pettigrew cut-out another dangerous ball into the box from Miller on the left at the expense of a corner-kick which bounced in the heart of the box and into Kyle McAusland’s “bread basket” with Cumnock’s appeals for a hand-ball being waved away.

bb_DSC_1591.JPG

With a quarter of an hour gone Dan Orsi switched play from wide on the right to the lively Lee Galllacher on the left to gather the ball and return it to the far side of the six yard box where Orsi had now arrived  only for former Glens keeper Ally Semple to pull off a point blank save from his header.

Back came Cumnock and a passage of good build up play concluded with Jordan Kemoe killing the ball before slipping a perfect pass to match Miller’s run into the left-hand side of the box but his shot sailed well over the bar.

A 15-minute spell of play then followed where play ebbed from to end without either keeper being seriously tested as defences were well on top. Nevertheless, the runs of Glens’ Gallacher and Cumnock’s Campbell caught the eye.

bb_DSC_1759

Lee Gallacher on the move

On 33 minutes McCann and Gallacher played a neat one-two in and around the box before the former rolled the ball back to Cairns to whip the ball in the heart of the goalmouth only for Findlay Frye’s header to loop over the bar.

Five minutes from the break Cumnock broke down the left through Miller who slipped the ball to Conn in the “D” and from there to Kemoe to hold and pass to the incoming Campbell who cracked a ferocious shot from a tight angle that Burns leapt to brilliantly tip over the bar.  The corner kick that followed ended with Murdoch impeding Pettigrew in the six yard and a free-kick to the home side.

bb_DSC_1801.JPG

In the final action of the half a Cumnock attack was mopped up in the box by Cameron Marlow who quickly found Orsi who then burst up the left before cutting infield and from 35 yards unleashed a thundering shot which Semple did well to stretch and take the sting out of it with both hands. With the keeper now on the ground the ball then struck the base of the post allowing Mick McCann to gather, but adjudged to have done so from an offside position.

HT Glens 0 Cumnock 0

The visitors were first to show in what proved to be a hectic half played at a high tempo on a hot afternoon. Conn won a corner kick on the right which was headed clear by McCann. Glens countered with Ally Park and Orsi combing down the right before the former hooked the ball high into the box where Frye headed it back to Marlow to thump a low shot from the edge of the “D” that was blocked by Murdoch while McCann’s attempt to fire home the rebound was also blocked before the loose ball fell for Frye only for his shot to sail over the bar.

bb_DSC_1904.JPG

Cumnock then won four corner-kicks in a three-minute spell without seriously threatening the Glens goal.  On 55 minutes the home side threatened through counter-attacking after Pettigrew cleared a corner and Frye knocked it on to Andrew whose overhead kick from the half-way line was snapped up by Frye to make a lung bursting run for the box where he squared it for the incoming Gallacher only for the back tracking Craig McLeish to make a last gap block. Cumnock scrambled the loose ball out the box which was snapped up by Park who squared to Marlow to instantly feed Andrew in the box with his back to goal and Paul Burns at his box who with his arms all over the Glens striker appeared to haul him to the ground, but play on said the referee much to the astonishment of the home side and their followers.

bb_DSC_1972.JPG

Paul Burns and Joe Andrew in the box

Glens dusted themselves down and responded in the best possible fashion. Yet another Cumnock corner-kick was the source of a Glens attack.  Pettigrew cleared it upfield to Marlow who then picked out Frye to make another break for the edge of box where he weaved inside Miller to progress to the penalty spot before shooting for goal and although Semple pulled off a fine save he could do nothing to stop Joe Andrew blasting home the rebound from 6 yards out. Glens up 1-0 on 57 minutes.

bb_DSC_2006.JPG

bb_DSC_2028.JPG

The visitors fought back and enjoyed a good spell of pressure which inevitably included winning a couple of corner-kicks. On the hour mark from open play Kemoe showed good control before slipping the ball to Burns who struck the ball sweetly from the outskirts of the box only for his namesake keeper Craig Burns to leap and with an outstretched arm pull off a great save and push the ball over the bar.

bb_DSC_2064.JPG

Craig Burns saves from Paul Burns

The resulting corner was cleared but Cumnock continued to press and earned a free kick 10 yards inside the Glens half which was fired into the box and met by Paul Burns but his header slipped inches wide of the back post.

On 65 minutes Cumnock brought on Jordan Banks for Jordan Kemoe but it was Glens that were now on the front foot without however testing Semple. The visitors weathered the mini-storm and were still very much in the game but again the counter-attack proved to be their Achilles’ heel. Pettigrew robbed Banks of the ball at the left hand corner of the Glens penalty box before clipping a glorious forward pass to Gallacher in the centre circle where a Sweet Afton dummy left Burns for dead and the midfielder free to emerge from the other end of the centre circle before rolling a defence splitting perfectly weighted pass for Mick McCann bursting into the box and without having to break his stride clipped the ball over the advancing Semple into welcoming net. A glorious goal to double the Glens lead on 76 minutes.

Cumnock looked crestfallen and the home side pressed for a third without any joy. On 84 minutes the visitors were handed a life-line. Although a free kick into the box saw McAusland win the aerial battle against Stephen McKenna the ball fell for Paul Burns who tried to pick out Miller on the right hand side of the box but before he could gather the ball he collapsed to the ground , apparently impeded by Mick McCann and the referee pointed to the spot. Graeme Ramage stepped up to take the kick and although Burns guessed correctly, he could do nothing to stop the well struck shot finding the bottom of his right-hand corner of the net.

Play continued at a frantic pace with both sides venturing forward in search of a crucial goal. On 88 minutes Mill flashed a free kick from just outside the right-hand corner of the penalty box inches wide of the far post.  A minute later Conn gathered a throw-in on the right close to the corner flag and wriggled his way to the bye-line before whipping a wicked ball to the near post where Park and Banks both ended on the ground in their attempt to connect with the ball trapped between them keeper Burns was unable to recover it until Pettigrew arrived and along with the resurrected Park  blocked off the risen Banks allowing the keeper to safely smother the ball.

aa_edward_CampbellGlens made a number of changes from the starting eleven that drew at Benburb last Saturday. A starting debut was given to new signing and former Kilmarnock Youth player Edward Campbell (left) while both Alan Cairns and Cameron Marlow returned from injury. Making way were Craig Menzies (injured), Dale Moore (unavailable) and Kyle McAusland.

Glenafton came out on top of the battle of the Glens in a close encounter at Loch Park. The first half played in bright sunshine proved to be one of few chances with the home side enjoying the best of these.

Attacking full back Dan Orsi was in the thick of early action whipping a wicked ball in from the right flank that was well grasped at the back post by keeper Gary Whyte. Soon after Campbell and Mick McCann combined to feed Orsi to drive through the middle and crack a low shot from 20 yards that beat the keeper at full stretch but whizzed inches wide of the post. On 15 minutes Mick McCann collected the ball at the corner of the box and rolled it back for Findlay Frye to fire an effort from 20 yards over the bar. Five minutes later Lee Gallacher released Orsi down the right to whip another cross into the box where McCann outjumped two defenders only for his header to sail over the bar.

bb_DSC_0514.JPG

Dan Orsi and Lee Gallacher

There were only glimpses of Glencairn as an attacking force in the early encounters with the endeavours of Dale Simeon catching eye without however creating any clear-cut chances. On 24 minutes Frye broke down a Glencairn attack just inside the home side’s half before slipping the ball to Cammy Marlow to take a touch or two before delivering a defence splitting pass to release Nisbet for a free run into the goalmouth only for the advancing keeper to judge his dive at the nippy striker’s feet to perfection and steal the ball cleanly. A minute later Gallacher gathered the ball deep in the Glencairn half and left a couple of defenders in his wake as he drove to the edge of the box only for his attempt to lob the advancing keeper fall safely into his hands.

bb_DSC_0663.JPG

Ally Park robs Jordan Leyden

The visitors then enjoyed a good 10-minute spell of pressure but time again their attempt to breach the Glens goal were thwarted with Ally Park in his unusual role in the centre of defence having an outstanding game. Jason McKay tried to wriggle his way into the penalty box but Park stubbornly stuck to him denying him the chance to cut inside and forcing McKay to the touchline before surrendering possession. Simeon from the right squared the ball across the edge of the box for Jordan Leyden only for Park’s block to prevent his shot at goal.

bb_DSC_0713

Glens countered with a couple of breaks that came to nothing before Simeon once again made good progress down the right and into the box before squaring for McKay but Park was on hand to coolly divert it out for a corner-kick which was headed over the bar by Stephen Kerr. Glencairn continued to press and a Leyden effort drifted wide of target before a free kick from the edge of the box was well defended by the home side. Leyden’s diagonal run ended at the outskirts of the box when the ball was stripped from his by Park’s tackle who repeated the feat by robbing Gavin Mackie of the loose ball in the same determined fashion.

Kris Gebbie’s header coming off the bar

On 38 minutes Glenafton came close to breaking the deadlock. Orsi and Gallacher combined down the right to earn a corner kick which the latter lofted high to the hedge of the six yard box to be met by the head of defender Kris Gebbie only for the ball to crash of the bar and the loose cleared for another corner which was eventually cleared.

At the other end Antony Fraser whipped a free kick into the box which was cleared for a corner-kick which was headed clear by Ryan McChesney.

HT Glens 0 Glencairn 0

In stark contrast the second half kicked off in heavy rain that would come and go through the half.  Despite the conditions play now was at greater tempo with plenty of goalmouth action and the half chances came and went for both sides.

The first came in 47 minutes in what was the best move of the match. Alan Cairns and Nisbet combined down the left before the latter cut inside to lay the ball off to Frye on the edge of the “D” who quickly rolled the ball into the box which McCann in an offside position let go for the incoming Nisbet to snap up and clip over the leg of the advancing keeper at the corner of the six yard box only for the ball to roll wide of the back post.

Glencairn countered with a break down the right which ended with full back Gebbie’s over hit cross into the box dipping tantalisingly over the bar. On 53 minutes the visitors passed up a great chance to break the deadlock after Simeon was picked out in acres of space and from 12 yards out, under pressure from Cairns, he skewed his shot wide of target.  Further attacks down either flank then petered out to nothing.

At the other end Nisbet laid off to Marlow and his ambitious effort from 30 yards or so flew high and wide of the target. On the hour mark Glens brought on Joe Andrew for Edward Campbell who had given a good account of himself on his debut. Although Nisbet continued to nip away at the visitors’ defence they stood firm with Chrystal leading by example.

Back came Glencairn through a break down the right by Simeon and although the back-tracking Park appeared to have won the ball with a fine tackle the visitors were awarded a free kick. This was played deep into the box and headed clear by Marlow which fell for Gebbie to try his luck from 20 yards but the ball drifted just wide of the post. Glencairn continued to look threatening on the break without testing the keeper.

Midway through the half Glenafton brought on defender Kyle McAusland for Lee Gallacher to fill the right back position and push Orsi forward down the flank and the change quickly paid dividends. On 71 minutes Andrew returned a throw-in from the left to Cairns who then lofted the ball high into the box where although Chrystal beat McCann to the header the ball fell for Dan Orsi to meet it with a brilliant touch and lash it low into the corner of the net.

Three minutes later Glens almost doubled their lead after Marlow’s cross from the left was headed on by Nisbet and the ball bounced off a defender to fall for Andrew but his shot from inside the six- yard box was brilliantly blocked by the keeper.

Glens continued to press and on 76 minutes doubled their lead with Orsi the architect. He intercepted Fraser’s pass in his own half and powered down the right flank to clip the ball into the box where it grazed off the top of Andrew’s head before being headed back towards the penalty spot for the incoming Findlay Frye to crack home a shot from 10 yards.

Credit to Rutherglen they continued to look dangerous on the break and on 80 minutes Simeon burst into the box and was brought down by keeper Craig Burns. Although the young keeper saved substitute Gary Smith’s spot-kick he could do nothing to prevent the former Arthurlie striker from stroking home the rebound.

The bright sunshine of the first half returned for the closing ten minutes and the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser with Smith and Simeon both creating decent chances but to no avail as Glens held on to secure their first league victory of the season.

Glens made two changes to the eleven that started against Meadow in the midweek with Lee Gallacher and Ryan Nisbet replacing Craig Pettigrew (suspended) and Joe Andrew (unavailable for selection) while the bench included injured Alan Cairns and Cameron Marlow along with trialist Campbell.  In the Benburb dug-out was Ian Gray who played for the great Glenafton side of the early 1990’s including winning the Scottish Junior Cup and Ayrshire League in 1992/93.

Goal celebrations as Lee congratulates Fin

Perhaps a draw was a fair outcome for both sides, however either could have a strong claim to the three points. Benburb on the one hand enjoyed a great deal of possession , territorial advantage and scored a peach of a goal while on the other hand Glens also scored a peach of a goal and struck the woodwork twice while leading 1-0!

After a period of sustained pressure from the home side the visitors began to threaten and on 33 minutes earned a free kick on the outskirts of the box. Kyle McAusland’s effort thundered into the wall before Ryan Nisbet rolled the loose ball back to Findlay Frye who lasered it from 18 yards to the top right hand corner beyond the outstretched arm of keeper Connolly.

Two minutes later from the right had goal-line Lee Gallacher cut the ball across the face of goal where Ally Park took a touch at the near post before Mick McCann smashed the ball off the crossbar.  Two minutes from the break Ryan Nisbet, from wide on the left, gave a defender the slip before advancing to the corner of the penalty box before cracking a super short that incredibly keeper Connolly with a strong hand pushed onto the crossbar.  H/T Bens 0 Glens 1

Bens started the second half in the same fashion they had the first and forced several corner kicks that the Glens defended manfully. Their pressure paid off on 58 minutes when Ciaran Diver , on as a substitute at half-time, picked up the ball on the half-way line and off he went on a mazy run past red shirt after red until he reached the edge of the box to drill a low shot into the left hand bottom corner of the net.

Glenafton made a number of changes to the line-up that started at Auchinleck on Saturday. Keeper Craig Burns and defender Ryan McChesney replacing the injured Brian McGarrity and Cameron (as they had at Beechwood) while Lee Gallacher and Ryan Nisbet made way for Ally Park and Joe Andrew.

aakyle_mcausland_01.JPGThe home side got off to a great on 5 minutes after Meadow only partially cleared a corner-kick and Kyle McAusland (right) gathered the loose ball wide on the left before progressing to the corner of the penalty box to drill a low shot through a crowd of players into the net.

Ten minutes before the break Meadow drew level through a fine glancing header from Darren Jones. Soon after Glens were reduced to 10 men for the second game in succession after a Craig Pettigrew challenge was adjudged worthy of a red card .

The 10 men battled manfully throughout the half in which both sides created some decent chances and the keepers made some fine saves. The home side almost snatched all three point as Ally Park came close in the closing minutes.

Auchinleck 4 Glenafton 1

  • Beechwood Park, Auchinleck
  • Auchinleck Talbot 4 (2)

    • Frye

Glens kicked off their league campaign with a short trip to face champions Auchinleck Talbot with their hosts mindful that the New Cumnock were the only team to inflict a league defeat on them last season. Of course, the visitors would be more mindful that they lost 4-0 to Talbot on the same ground last Saturday in the opening game of the West Region Sectional League Cup, albeit the result was not a true reflection of the Glens’’ contribution to a game that was a lot tighter than the score-line suggested.

In glorious sunshine the home side dominated the first half with lightning quick breaks, slick accurate passing, strength in tackle along with a of host of chances and would argue but for a number of fine saves from Glens goalie Brian McGarrity that the 2-0 lead at the break far from flattered them.

Glens had a decent early chance when Dan Orsi powered down the right to break into the box before drilling a low angled shot past two back-tracking defenders and beyond the reach of keeper Andy Leishman only for the ball to slip inches wide of the far post.  Minutes before the break Mick McCann and Ryan Nisbet combined to set up a shot from the edge of the box that was comfortably saved by the keeper. In between times the few corner kicks they won were comfortably cleared by the Talbot defence.

bb_DSC_8921.JPG

In stark contrast Talbot attacked with menace throughout the half with Mark Shankland often the instigator. On 12 minutes he gathered the ball in the middle of the park and slipped the ball down the left for Kier Samson to hunt down before clipping a low angled shot that beat McGarrity but drifted narrowly wide of the back post. Shankland then whipped three corner kicks in quick succession into heart of the six-yard box each of which were frantically cleared by the Glens defence including the last of which was bravely punched clear by McGarrity. Graham Wilson then picked out Samson in the box with a peach of the pass but the striker’s attempt to bury the ball in the far corner was denied by the outstretched arm and strong hand of McGarrity. A minute later the keeper then pulled off a point blank save from Samson’s shot from 8 yards out.

On 27 minutes the home side broke the deadlock following some excellent build up play. Samson slipped the ball to Wilson on the outskirts of the box and after a few twists and turns rolled the ball to Shankland in space on the left hand side of the box only for his attempt to curl to ball into the net to be pushed away by McGarrity before the incoming Samson forced the ball over the line from a few yards out. The visitors unfortunately were down to 10 men with at the time with Cameron Marlow requiring treatment on the touchline.

Samson opens the scoring

Marlow was still off the park when Auchinleck doubled their lead two minutes later. Samson earned the home side another corner-kick after McGarrity got down low to push his angled shot wide of the far post. Wilson got his head to Shankland’s kick and defender Dylan Young was in place to head home the loose ball from a few yards out.

Young makes it 2-0

With Cameron Marlow failing to recover from his knock he was replaced by Ryan McChesney who teamed up with Craig Pettigrew at the heart of the defence while captain Craig Menzies moved to fill Marlow’s position at right back.  The big defender was soon in the thick action and blocked Samson’s attempt to find the empty net after having given McGarrity the slip. A minute before the break the keeper then got a hand to a net-bound close-range header from Stephen Wilson.

HT Auchinleck 2 Glens 0

The Glens were forced to make a change at half-time with Brian McGarrity unable to continue due to a knee injury that required a visit to the hospital at the close of the game. Craig Burns who covered for Brian at the end of last season took his place.

The visitors started positively with Lee Gallacher on the left switching play to the right for Orsi to gather and drive forward from the half way-line to the corner of the penalty box only for his shot to sail over the bar. Glens won a free-kick 30 yards from goal that thundered into the wall initiating a counter attack which concluded with Burns pulling off a good save from Samson. A minute later the keeper showed a safe pair of hands after hold Shankland’s free kick from the corner of the box as Young threatened to pounce on any spillage. Graham Wilson then broke into the left hand of the box and although his shot beat the keeper the ball crashed off the bar.

Craig Pettigrew on the ball

Glens steadied the ship and enjoyed a good spell of possession as the push men forward. Menzies floated a ball into the box only for Leishman to make a clean clutch to deny McCann a header. Frye and Orsi combined wide on the left and earned a throw in yards from the corner flag. It was taken quickly and trapped by Nisbet before he weaved past two defenders to fire the ball into the danger area only for the ball to strike the arm of Willie Lyle to fall foul of the new hand ball rule and referee point to the spot. Despite the Talbot defender’s protest, similar to Glenafton’s on two occasions at Beechwood last Saturday, Findlay Frye fired the spot-kick into the corner of the net beyond Leishman at full stretch to halve the deficit on 57 minutes.

bb_DSC_9196

Findlay Frye scores from the spot 2-1

Glens continued to press and contended well with a couple of Talbot counter-attacks. On the hour mark Gallacher, from within a pocket of black and gold strips, found McCann on the edge of the box who slipped it wide to Nisbet on the overlap to drill the ball to edge of the six yard box for the inrushing Frye only for Leishman to make a brave two footed block to clear the danger.

Talbot were now camped in their own half but try as they might through runs by Nisbet and Orsi or by balls floated into the box by Menzies, Pettigrew and Dale Moore the Glens couldn’t convert these into clear goal scoring chances.

Dan Orsi breaks with Craig Menzies

Midway through the half the home side made a double substitution with Mark Shankland and Gareth Armstrong replaced by Kieran Healy and Jamie Glasgow and slowly the Talbot began to grow back into the game.

On 76 minutes the Glens from wide on the left squared the ball across the front of their own penalty box before passing it back to Burns to clear only for the keeper to miskick it directly to Samson who accepted he gift and slotted the ball home for 3-1. With their tails up Talbot pushed for a quick fourth but Burns denied Graham Wilson with a fine save.

Two minutes after going two down Glens went down to 10 men.  Gallacher didn’t take too kindly to an elbow in the face during an aerial challenge and shoved Glasgow to the ground in the aftermath, earning a second yellow card, both for retaliation.

Credit to the Glens they regrouped continued to compete. Orsi fashioned an overhead kick in a crowded Talbot box that was gathered by Leishman. In the closing minute the keeper got down low to stop a thundering low shot from Kyle McAusland and then save McCann’s attempt to bury the rebound, albeit the effort was flagged for offside. Lucky white heather and Leishman launched the ball upfield   which fell for substitute Hamish McKinlay, on for Samson, who cracked the ball home in some style to make it 4-1 with the last kick of the game.
