Richie for Rosey

Cheers Richie, all the best!

Cheers Richie, all the best!

Following lengthy discussions with Richie McKillen in an attempt to have him stay at Loch  Park the club has reluctantly conceded to his transfer request and he has  joined East Region champions Linlithgow Rose.

Richie first signed for the Glens, then under Mark Shanks,  on a loan deal from Dumbarton in November 2009, and the unassuming big defender soon made a big impression on the Loch Park support. He signed on a permanent deal at the beginning of 2010/11, with Greg Denham now in charge, and went on to make 116 starts for the club and scored 6 goals, including a coupe of Richie rockets, over three and half seasons with the Glens. Richie leaves New Cumnock with a Super League 1st Championship medal and a West of Scotland Cup winners medal.

RichieMcKillenA hard working honest player, Richie played  left-back for much of his time at the club and it was easy to get the impression he would have played in any position for the team. However, a huge part of the club’s successful end to last season saw Richie at his favoured centre-back slot, where he struck a purple patch with a master class in text book defending.

Always on the terracing, home and away, encouraging him  through every game was his father David, a true gentleman, and he too will be sorely missed at Loch Park.

We would like to wish Richie all the best at Linlithgow Rose and are delighted that he has this opportunity at such a well respected club, we’re sure he will be a success.

Glenafton 1 Irvine Meadow 3

West Region Premier Division

Match 1

Saturday 17th August, Loch  Park, New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 (1)

IRVINE MEADOW 3 (2)

Glenafton hosted Irvine Meadow in the opening league game of the season, both sides almost unrecognisable from the season before when the New Cumnock side had come out on top in all three meetings – twice in the league and once in their successful West of Scotland Cup campaign.

The home side started with three trialists and six summer signings  along with Ryan McChesney and Craig Menzies at centre-backs.  Meanwhile Meadow had a handful of former Ashfield players that had followed manager Stevie Rankin from Saracen Park. One in particular, striker Paul Maxwell, had made his mark at Loch Park in the past , having scored five goals here in back to seasons when the sides faced each other in the Super 1st Division; and today he proved to be the match winner again with a first half brace.

The opener came as early as the third minute after a long ball was launched from tight on the left touchline deep into the box and Maxwell outjumped Jamie McGeoghan to guide a close range header into the top corner.

Within a minute the home side were level, after trialist Cameron Marlow outfoxed Mark Thomson to send in a wicked cross to the near post where it was met by the flashing head of Scott Adam, only for Medda’s trialist keeper Corr to pull off a stunning save although he could do nothing to stop Aaron Connolly blast home the loose ball for his fifth goal of the season.

The Glens began to enjoy a good spell of possession with some fine passing play. On 15 minutes a strong run from the centre circle by Connolly delivered the ball to Findlay Frye at the edge of the box but the former Meadow’s midfielder crack at goal whizzed over the bar. The pace and play of Gary McCann down the right for the visitors also caught the eye but the home defence starved the forwards of any clear chances.

On 35 minutes Connolly gathered the ball on the far side of the box before turning inside and drilling for goal, but the ball deflected off Adam and sailed over the bar.  A minute later Adam won a header in the box to send the ball skyward and somehow Connolly positioned himself to meet the ball on its descent and his volley from inside the six yard box deserved more.

Meadow broke down the left and another high ball lofted into the box was gathered by McCann and although his effort at goal was blocked well by the keeper, Paul Maxwell  was well placed to pick his spot from a few yards out.

Two minutes later McCann’s endeavours earned the visitors a corner-kick and a free header at the back post came within inches of doubling Meadow’s lead. H/T Glens 1 Meadow 2

Glens were quickly on the front foot and on 49 minutes a Marlow rocket from 20 yards out was superbly saved by Corr and Frye’s attempt to play the ball back into the danger area blocked at the expense of a corner. Three corner-kicks followed in quick succession without the keeper being seriously tested. The home side continued to press and on 55 minutes Connolly broke down the right but there was no takers for the ball into box.

With just over an hour on the clock the visitors extended their lead when Mark Sideserf on the left sent a ball across the face of goal which struck the unfortunate McGeoghan and flew into his own net.

Gareth Armstrong replaced trialist Craig Brown as the Glens tried to claw back a two goal deficit. However, it was Meadow’s substitute Kevin Finlayson that came close to extending the visitors lead after a splendid piece of passing set up the former Bellshill player deep in  the box only for Craig Menzies presence to force him to fire wide of the post.

The home side’s passing game of the first half was less evident now and although they tried to push forward they came up against a determined Meadow side in no rush to push on and look for a fourth.  Glenafton’s luck deserted them on 71 minutes when a Jamie McKernon stunning free kick from 30 yards out cracked off the post with Corr beaten and seven minutes later an Armstrong header flashed wide of the post. With time running out Meadow stood firm and secured the points.  FT Glens 1 Meadow 3

KELLO ROVERS  1 (0)

Glenafton fielded four trialists, including a goalkeeper for the injured Brian McGarrity, for the visit of Kello Rovers, as Tommy Bryce continues to rebuild the side.

Half chances came and went at both ends before the home side took control of the game and only a fine save prevented them taking the lead on 16 minutes . A Scott Adam cross from the right was met at the back post by Aaron Connolly and the ball headed across the face of the goal only for Findlay Frye’s flying header to be pushed to safety by the keeper at full stretch.  On 20 minutes the keeper was again at full stretch but could do little to stop an Aaron Connolly strike from a tight angle after a collecting a quality pass up the right touchline from Craig McEwan and a determined run into the box.

Four minutes later trialist Jamie McKernon was tripped at the edge of the box and despite strong appeals for hand ball from John Craig’s free kick the home side had to settle for a corner kick from the same player which saw Scott Adam soar and send a looping header into the back of the net.

A third followed soon after on 27 minutes when Frye skipped past the advancing keeper and instead of trying to find the net from an acute angle clipped the ball to the opposite end of the box for trialist Simon Rossi to head home in some style.

Credit to the Rovers as they carved out a couple of openings before the Glens were once again on the front foot with wave after wave of attacks and Connolly’s pace causing all sorts of problems for the defence . Two minutes from the break the keeper brought off a stunning one-handed save from Frye and soon after dived bravely at the feet of Rossi.

However, there was little he could do on the stroke of half-time after Craig Menzies evaded a tackle at the corner of the box before picking out Scott Adam to stroke the ball home from four yards out. HT Glens 4 Kello 0

Five minutes after the re-start Scott Adam left to loud applause and was replaced by Gareth Armstrong who was soon in the thick of the action.  He gathered a cut back from Rossi, after another fine run down the left, but his drive from the edge of the box whistled past the post.

Just before the hour mark Frye’s foray into the box saw the ball sent skywards and Gareth Armstrong meet in first time on the drop and sweetly slam it home from twenty yards out to put the Glen 5-0 up.

Potts a Red and now a Blue

Potts celebrates a goal against the Medda

Potts celebrates a goal against the Medda

Craig Potter has signed for Kilwinning Rangers after two great seasons with the Glens.

He joined the club from Dalry Thistle at the start of season  2011/12 and quickly established himself as a firm favourite with the Glenafton support through his 100% effort and endeavour as an attacking full-back or sleeves rolled up in the midfield.

Craig made 77 starts with the Glens and scored 4 goals. There were few finer sites than when he was in his ‘man and a mission’ mode where his gritty determination would see him win those un-winnable balls and set up another Glens attack.

Craig takes with him a Super League 1st Division Championship winners medal and a West of Scotland Cup winners medal and the best wishes of all at Glenafton Athletic.

Thanks Craig

AUCHINLECK TALBOT 3 (1)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC  2 (0)

Glenafton bounced back from the lashing at Lugar on Monday night with a gutsy performance away at Auchinleck that saw them fight back from two down to level the match, only to be denied a share of the spoils by a later winner from the hosts.

Keeper Brian McGarrity made his competitive debut for the Glens, back at his old stomping ground, while John Craig was suspended and Gareth Armstrong side-lined along with Stevie Miller.  The Glens once again fielded three trialists with another two on the bench.

In the opening minutes both sides earned free-kicks on the outskirts of their opponent’s 18 yard box with neither keeper tested or goal breached. On 11 minutes McGarrity dropped low to stop an angled drive from Steven White and then bravely clutched the loose ball from the studs of the incoming Kenny Connelly. David Gormley, with Ryan McChesney glued to him, weaved into the box only to meet a wall of red shirts marshalled by the Craigs, Menzies and McEwan, and repelled once again.

With 17 minutes gone the Glens carved their way through the heart of the home defence as one trialist played through the other who in turn played a cute one-two with Aaron Connolly before firing from 12 yards out only for the advancing Andy Leishman to get a foot to the ball and Ally Park mop up the pieces with Connolly threatening to pounce.

On 33 minutes the home side took the lead with a slice of good fortune after Bryan Young pounced on a headed clearance and although his shot at goal appeared to be well covered by McGarrity the ball deflected off the outstretched leg of McChesney and into the corner of the net.

Talbot take the lead

Talbot take the lead

Talbot turned up the heat in search of a second with a wave of attacks the best of which arrived five minutes before the break. Young released Gormley wide on the left and the former Glens man made good haste down the flank before cutting into the box and setting up Young with a golden chance only for the striker to blast the ball over the bar.  H/T Auchinleck 1 Glens 0

The visitors were first to show after the interval with Craig Potter and Findlay Frye meshing well with both trialists in midfield and dictating play with Connolly and Scott Adam lively up front.  Yet, on 55 minutes the Talbot doubled their lead after Trialist1 and Kier Milleken challenged for the ball wide in the box and as the latter tumbled onto the lush Beechwood grass, the referee pointed to the spot. Kenny Connelly, stepped up and slotted the ball home with some style.

Glenafton’s heads stayed aloft and within a minute they halved the deficit when Trialist1 headed the ball over the top of the Talbot defence and Trialist 3 (Marlow) ran on to gather the ball at the edge of the box and finish exquisitely with a cracking volley over the head of the advancing Leishman to send the ball soaring into the roof of the net.

Glens pull one back

Glens pull one back

Heads up and now tails up too, the visitors continued to press with  five minutes later a Leishman leg stretched out to block Adam’s crack at goal.

On 63 minutes the visitors’ pressure paid off as Connolly hounded Martin McGoldrick forcing the centre-back into a pass back to the safe-keeping of Leishman or so it seemed until the big keeper took a touch allowing Connolly to close in, steal the ball, round the goalie all ends up and stroke the ball into the back of the eeka peeka pucka pokey!

Glens draw level

Glens draw level

Squeaky ‘bot  time as the Glens pushed on but the home side soon regained their composure and six minutes later came within a whisker of regaining the lead as McGoldrick , diving at full stretch just failed to get his head to the ball at the back post. Soon after it was McGarrity at full stretch across.   the goal-line to take the pace of an angled drive and gather up before Colin Spence could feed on any scraps.

With 15 minutes to go the Glens were dealt a blow when the outstanding McChesney, who had failed to recover from an earlier knock, had to leave the field and was replaced by a Trialist.

As the sun sank quickly and shadows strived to stretch the length of the pitch both sides went in search of the winner. With six minutes to go a short corner to Frye caught Auchinleck napping and the lively midfielder’s curled strike whizzed over the bar. Two minutes from time the hosts had the last say as a ball in from the left struck a red shirt and left McGarrity with no chance and Auchinleck with the points. F/T Auchinleck 3 Glenafton 2

Prior to kick-off Glenafton announced the transfer to Hurlford United  of Paul McKenzie, Ross Robertson and brothers Glen and Danny Mitchell, all of whom had made clear their desire to leave the club. Making the switch from Blair Park to Loch Park Aaron Connolly were and Scott Adam and both strikers made the starting eleven for the opening Ardagh Cup match of the season, which had been switched to Rosebank Park.

Keeper Brian McGarrity and midfielder Stevie Miller, two other of manager’s Tommy Bryce’s summer signings, were side-lined through injury and in came Glenafton U19 goalkeeper Ryan Dunsmuir along with two trialists.

It proved to be memorable night for the hosts. After Dunsmuir saved a spot kick they later opened up a three goal lead in the first half with a brace from Andy Stevenson and one from Martin Reilly. Gareth Armstrong headed home to herald some hope for the visitors just before the break.

Thoughts of a second half come-back from the Glens evaporated in double time after the young keeper could only direct a Chris Todd corner-kick into his own goal and Martin Reynolds fired in a fifth soon after. Stevenson completed his hat-trick and added another for good measure to crown off a stunning victory for the Jaggy Bunnets
