A Ryan Stevenson rocket from 30 yards a minute before the break was enough to separate the two sides. The goal secured Troon’s status in the Premiership next season whilst also ended the Glens 10 game unbeaten run in the league.

Beith win penalty shoot-out 4-2

Glenafton and Beith met for the third time this season and for the third time the game ended all square after 90 minutes. Unlike the previous two league games this match ended goal-less and went to a penalty shoot-out to determine which side would progress to the funal of the West of Scotland Cup. It was the home side that triumphed through scoring 4 out of 4 while Stephen Grindlay saved two of Glens spot kicks. On the bright side was the performance of Glenafton’s young stand-in goalkeeper Craig Burns who was outstanding throughout the 90 minutes.

The Glens began with same defensive line-up that drew with Largs last week while the middle three were Findlay Frye, Dale Moore and Ally Park with a front three of the Joe Andrew, Dan Orsi and Leon Murphy.

Beith kicked off down the Bellsdale bank and were immediately on the front foot. Darren Christie cut into the right-hand side of the box before drilling a low angle shot that keeper Craig Burns did well to get down low and push the ball wide for what would be the home side’s first of corner-kicks in the opening quarter of an hour. The kick was headed clear by Ryan McChesney and the ball recovered by Beith to set up Christie with a shot from 18 yards that deflected off a defender and gathered by Burns.

Joe Bradley broke down the left before cutting inside to play a one-two with Keir Milliken in the box and curling a shot for the top corner that was deflected wide by McChesney. The corner kick that followed eventually fell for Peter Haggarty in the six-yard box but his header was blocked by Alan Cairns at the expense of another corner which was headed clear as was the third that followed in quick succession. Milliken tried a shot from distance but again Burns came out on top with another fine save.

The Glens had created a couple breaks through Dan Orsi and Leon Murphy during the hectic opening spell but were now growing into the game and enjoying much more possession. On 19 minutes the Glens made good progress up the right before Kyle McAusland’s ball into the box was met by the head of Ryan Docherty sending the ball high into the air forcing keeper Stephen Grindlay to push it away on its descent before gathering the loose ball on the ground.  A minute later Findlay Frye slipped the ball through the middle to Orsi who then wrong-footed Conner McGlinchey before setting up a shot from 22 yards out that sailed wide of target.

Glens continued to press and Murphy earned a free kick wide on the left 16 yards from the goal-line.  Alan Cairns clipped the ball short into the box where if fell for Dale Moore to try and lob the keeper only for the ball to bounce off the top of the cross before dropping wide.

Midway through the half good work by Bradley down the left won another corner kicked that was headed clear at the back post by Ally Park. Soon after Christie whipped a wicked ball from wide on the right into the six-yard box but the incoming Haggarty came within a hair’s breadth of getting his head on the end of it.

On 27 minutes the visitors won their first corner-kick of the match after McAusland’s attempted cut-back from the bye-line was deflected wide however it came to nothing. Back came Beith and Bradley’s dangerous ball into the goalmouth was cleanly clutched by Burns. Christie and Paul Frize then combined to set up Milliken from 18 yards but the striker scooped the ball over the bar.

Glens had the better of the chances in the closing ten minutes of the half. From deep on the left Cairns floated a free kick to the right-hand corner flag for McAusland to whip the ball into the box and although McChesney couldn’t get his header on target Murphy cut in from the left to fire a shot from a tight angle that Grindlay held firmly at his near post.

Joe Andrew came within a whisker of getting on the end of another great ball into the danger area by McAusland only for John Sheridan to clear the danger at the expense of a corner. This was played short to Craig Menzies to clip the ball into the six-yard box which following a scramble Grindlay managed to push it away from the head of McAusland and then quickly recover it. Moore then burst up the right to break into the box and his glorious ball into the six-yard box was missed by two defenders and Andrew sandwiched in between them. The visitors won back-to-back corners; the first cleared and the second headed wide by Orsi.

The Glens came close to breaking the stalemate in the opening minute of the new half.  The ball was played back to Cairns from the kick-off to clip the ball to the edge of the box where Andrew killed it with his left foot before looping the ball high into the box with his right, only for Jamie Wilson to intercept but his touch was poor and Frye stole the ball to break into the six yard box, skip past the keeper but Sheridan saved the day after he nicked the ball and booted it clear of the goal.

Cairns floated a free-kick into the box and after some head tennis the ball dropped for Moore to manufacture a fine volley that flew wide of the target. It was Moore that won Glens a corner which Grindlay saved cleanly under the bar as Andrew challenged.

On 53 minutes Beith brought on John Middleton for Jamie Wilson.

Bradley burst up the left flank before cutting into the box and drilling a low shot that lacked the power to test Burns. Christie picked up the ball in the middle of the park and surged forward before being brought down by McChesney on the outskirts of the box, earning the big defender a yellow card and a sore one in the process. Although Milliken’s free kick beat the wall the ball sailed well over the bar; meanwhile McChesney limped off the park.  Burns then did well to grab a ball fired in from wide on the left by Christie as Haggarty threatened at the near post.

McChesney hadn’t recovered and on 62 minutes he was replaced by forward Mick McCann forcing a reshuffle with McAusland moving into the centre of defence and Orsi taking up the right back position.

The Glens had faded as an attacking force while the home side continued to press.  McGlinchey fired a cracking free kick from just outside the left-hand corner of the penalty box that pulled off a great save from Burns, pushing the ball away at full stretch. The corner that followed was headed clear by McAusland as too was the one that followed soon after.

On 71 minutes the Glens won a corner and although it was headed clear by Sheridan it marked the return of the visitors as an attacking force.  Andrew switched play from the right by hooking the ball infield over the head of two defenders and into space for Murphy to give chase before hitting a diagonal shot on the run that drifted wide of the far post with the keeper beaten.

With 10 minutes to go Glens brought on Davie Winters for Dale Moore.

Andrew trapped a throw in from the left on his chest before hooking the ball over to the back post where the incoming Frye leapt high in the air to send a looping header that dipped inches over the bar.

On 82 minutes the home side replaced Peter Haggarty with Nicky Docherty, his first action to win a disputed free-kick some 30 yards or so from goal. McGlinchey’s effort was effortlessly held by Burns in a flawless performance by the young keeper. At the other end Nicky Docherty brought down Murphy and McAusland’s free-kick from 25 yards was blasted into the wall.

In the closing minute Christie “won” a free kick close to the bye line having already lost his balance before trying to evade a tackle from Cairns that didn’t materialise. Bradley whipped the ball into the goalmouth where Menzies got the jump on Nicky Docherty to clear the danger. Soon after the same scenario played out as Menzies cleared another Bradley free-kick in the last action prior to the penalty shoot-out.

With Brian McGarrity out throughout the remainder of the season with a knee injury  young keeper Craig Burns covers again. He is joined on the injury list with Leon Murphy which for some time now has also included top goal scorer Chris Dallas. Ally Park and Mick McCann were unavailable for selection and Glens could only name a bench of three with manager Craig McEwan, assistant manager Craig Potter joining striker Kit Cummins.

The Largs side included former Glenafton striker Scott Adam while fellow striker John Carter part of the Glens treble side of 2016/17 was not available for selection. Meanwhile in the dug-out was former Glens defender Liam McVey, now player-coach at the North Ayrshire side.

The home side were first to threaten in the opening minute when Davie Winters glancing header from a Kyle McCausland cross beat the keeper but slipped wide of the back post. Largs responded with a break down the left which ended with Ben Black’s low angled shot be held by Craig Burns as Ryan McKie closed in.

Back up the park and a Glens short corner kick was partially cleared and the recovered ball headed on toward the goal by Joe Andrew only for keeper Daniel Farrell to clutch it cleanly from Winters’ head in the six-yard box.

Another Glens corner quickly followed which was won in the air by Ryan McChesney and headed back across the face of the goal but was cut out by Scott Adam, the striker then blocked McAusland’s attempt to drill home the loose ball. The visitors broke upfield on the right through Black who picked out Paul Harkins to drive to the bye-line before gathering the return ball but his shot from 10 yards missed the target.

The game continued at a frantic pace as play flowed from end to end.

On 11 minutes Glens came within a whisker of opening the scoring after McAusland whipped a great ball in from the right which eluded the keeper but despite a lung bursting run by Dale Moore into the six-yard box the midfielder could only get an outstretched boot to the ball to send it over the bar. At the other end Adam and Black combined well to set Harkins up with a shot from 18 yards only for McChesney to time his challenge to perfection and the loose ball cleared by Cammy Marlow.

Back and forth remained the pattern of an entertaining match with both sides playing nice passing football but lacking the guile to unlock their opponents defence.

On 20 minutes Dan Orsi created panic in the Largs box. He burst between two defenders to drive into the box and although the pair back-tracked to block his way to goal he played a marvellous one-two with Winters to progress to the bye-line before cutting the ball across the face of goal but Mark Millar was in hand to clear as Andrew threatened.

Back came Glens through Marlow clipping a great ball through the middle for Orsi to chase and holding off Laurie McMaster he tried to lob the keeper from 18 yards only for Farrell, having advanced 8 yards off his line, to get his fingers to the goal bound ball. Findlay Frye hunted down the loose ball on the bye-line before turning and whipping it back into the heart of the box where it eventually fell for Andrew to hook a low shot from 15 yards that beat the keeper at full stretch but whizzed inches wide of the post.

Largs countered with a powerful break through the middle by Millar who then played the ball forward to Adam to crack a first time shot from inside the ‘D’ forcing Burns to get down low and pull off an excellent save and the big striker’s attempt to head home the rebound drifted wide of target.  At the other end Winters set up Marlow for a 20 yard strike but again the keeper came out on top.

Glens won another corner-kick and although McChesney again won the aerial battle the ball was cleared initiating a break upfield by Harkins only for the back-tracking Marlow to steal the ball at the edge of the box with a well-timed sliding tackle.

On 34 minutes Moore clipped a ball up the left wing for Orsi to head on and just as it seemed Ryan Begley would clear the danger the centre half missed his kick completely allowing the ball run free. Off went Orsi to chase down the ball and drive into the box, wary of McMaster now closing in, he curled a cracking shot into the top corner beyond the reach of the advancing keeper.

As the half drew to a close a Glens free-kick floated into the box came to nothing as did the visitors’ first corner kick of the game when Harkin’s glancing header at one post flew wide of the other.

The last goal action of the half when the ball was switched from Alan Cairns on the left to Orsi on the right, via Andrew and Winters, and the midfielder letting the ball take a bounce before rifling an angled shot that whizzed wide of the post.

The visitors began the new half in determined fashion and loud claim for a penalty were waved away after Adam’s near post header struck the unraised arm of McChesney. Largs continued to press with Black seeing a lot of the ball on the left flank.

Some respite for Glens as Cairns fired in a cross from the left only for Moore looping header to dip over the bar.

Back came Largs and Craig Menzies and Burns combined to snuff out Black’s half chance. Soon after McKie’s effort from distance zoomed over the bar. On 56 minutes the visitors’ pressure paid off when the ball was switched from right to left by Adam and Harkins to the feet of Ben Black who took a touch before curling an exquisite shot from the edge of the box into the top corner.

The home side responded well and Orsi’s cross into the box was fired over the bar by Moore.  Orsi then gathered a pass from Moore, before the midfielder was hacked down by Millar, and with played waved on Orsi picked out Winters in the box only for his shot to whiz inches wide. Millar could count himself fortunate only to receive a yellow card for his late tackle.

Play fell into the pattern of the first half with the pace not relenting as both sides pushed for a winner. On 62 minutes Begley headed clear a Glens corner kick and a minute later Burns pushed away a Largs corner kick from under the bar.

Begley picked up a knock and was replaced by Ross George.

Although endeavour remained high clear-cut chances were low in number. With five minutes to go the home side almost snatched all three points with a wonderful move.  Moore fed Orsi on the right to play a one with Andrew in the box before making for the bye-line to whip a ball to the back post for the incoming Frye and his flying header was stopped on the line by Stuart Faulds and then cleared off the line by Martin Orr.  Glens finished on the front foot and in the closing minute Farrell pushed away Orsi’s shot from 20 yards to ensure the match ended all square.

Glens were forced to make a couple of changes from the eleven that started in last Saturday’s victory over Kirkintilloch Rob Roy. Young keeper Craig Burns came in for Brian McGarrity who sustained a knee injury against the Rabs and Kyle McAusland replaced Craig Menzies who was unavailable for selection.  In other changes Ally Park and Mick McCann made way for Dale Moore and Mick McCann.

Although the sun was beating down on Loch Park the game took time to warm up in terms of goal mouth action.  On 10 minutes the Glens won the first of two back to back corners neither of which threatened the goal. In the same vein a few minutes later Cambuslang were awarded the first of two free kicks on the outskirts of the box both of which suffered from the same fate of their hosts corners.

The home side made the breakthrough on 17 minutes after Joe Andrew played a slick one-two with Kit Cummins down the right flank before breaking into the box and squaring the ball for the incoming Findlay Frye to take a touch before picking spot from seven yards out, giving keeper Chris Treacy no chance.

The keeper, once on Killie’s books, kept his cool to clear a ball being chased down by Andrew and then rushed to the edge of the box to gather a long ball played into a busy box by Kyle McAusland.

The visitors looked lively down both flanks the endeavour of attacking full back Zaki Djoudi down the right catching the eye and the combination of Connor Cowan and Craig McLeish causing problems down the left. Indeed, it was McLeish that drew the sides level on 28 minutes with a sweetly struck shot from the left-hand corner of the box that although Burns got both hands to the ball, it slipped through them and into the net.

The Glens restored their lead three minutes later after Cummins was adjudged to have been brought down in the box by Zak Moynes and despite the Camby’s protest the referee pointed to the spot after which Findlay Frye converted from 12 yards with some aplomb.

As the heat intensified the chances dried and those of the half variety were dealt with comfortably by both goalies.

The visitors were first to threaten after the break through Greg McEwan’s free kick from the left was floated to the back post where Simon Marriot headed it back across the face of goal for McLeish only for Leon Murphy to intercept and the danger was cleared.

At the other end Frye fired a low shot from 25 yards out through a ruck of players that Treacey did well to get down low and keep a hold of the ball.

On 55 minutes while preparing for a free-kick from the outskirts of the box Cambuslang replaced the industrious Djoudi with Ryan Mackey before Ryan Barrett drilled the kick into the Glens wall.

The home side began to take control with Frye and Dale Moore winning the majority of the midfield battles while Murphy’s mazy runs were now more a feature of the game. The visitors made a second change with Chris McNeil coming on for Greg McEwan.

Midway through the half Murphy curled a free kick from the corner of the box which was well held by Treacey. Glens continued to press and Andrew’s great touch in the box took two defenders out of play while picking out Davie Winters to run on and attempt to chip the keeper from 10 yards only for the ball to sail over the bar. Dan Orsi then clipped a great ball into the box for the unmarked Cummins but he mistimed his effort and the chance was gone.

With 15 minutes to go there was some respite for Rangers with a break that ended with a good ball into the box that Burns did well to punch from the head of Cowan and then recovered the loose ball. Back came Glens and after Murphy was floored the free kick into the box was killed brilliantly by Winters to set up a shot from 7 yards out but Treacy improvised to get a leg to the ball and clear the danger.

On 78 minutes the Glens brought on Mick McCann for Andrew and two minutes later were forced into another substitution after a bad tackle on Murphy that saw the midfielder carried from the field to be replaced by assistant manager Craig Potter.

Glens continued to turn the screw ever mindful that only a goal separated the two sides. Frye slipped an inch perfect ball into the box for Moore to chase down and drill a low angled shot which the keeper held well at full stretch.

A series of glorious chances then passed the Glens bye in the closing three minutes and the time added on. Moore powered his way into the box and picked out the free Winters with a peach of a pass but the outrushing keeper forced him to fire over the bar from six yards out. Moore then wrong footed centre back Andy McQuade to skip into the box and drive for the bye-line before squaring the ball across the face of goal which went through the keepers legs and fell for Cummins at the back post only for the big striker to meet the bouncing ball with a poor touch to send it over the bar from to yards. On 93 minutes McCann was presented with a free run into the box but Treacy kept his cool to snatch the ball from his feet.

The Glens put safety first and brought added time to conclusion with back to back short corners.

Glenafton kicked off with the same eleven that started off in the draw away to Beith last Saturday. Although the sun was shining brightly an icy wind cut across the length of the Loch Park in a westerly direction for most of the time, interspersed with periods of unpredictable swirling gusts.

The visitors were first to show through Willie Sawyers but his low trundling shot from the edge of the box was easily gathered by keeper Brian McGarrity.

Glens responded with Leon Murphy picking out Mick McCann in the left-hand side of the box to curl a well struck ball that beat keeper Craig Gordon at full stretch but slipped past the far post.  Davie Winters and Dan Orsi combined down the right before the latter slipped the ball to Murphy deep in the box only for his shot from 12 yards to be deflected wide for a corner kick. This was partially cleared by the Rabs defence before the ball was played back into the box where McCann earned another corner. This kick too was initially cleared before being recovered by Craig Menzies to feed Joe Andrew in the box and after his shot was headed clear by Scott Forrester the Glens captain pounced to volley the loose ball which took a boounce before Gordon saved well.

On 15 minutes a cushioned header from Sawyers in the box was nodded on by strike partner Alex Cassells before cleverly turning to give two defenders the slip and wrong footing the Glens keeper but his low angle shot slipped well wide off the post.

Back came the hosts with Murphy’s mazy run ended by a trip and Alan Cairns free kick floated into the box and although Ryan McChesney leapt head and shoulders above the Rabs’ defence his header sailed high over the bar. Soon after, Cairns whipped a killer ball from wide on the left into the box where Winters got the jump of the full back and from yards tried to guide it passed Gordon, however made a fine block and then juggled the ball to safely as Winters tried in vain for a second bite at the cherry. A Murphy cross caused some uncertainty in the Rabs box and, adopting a safety-first policy, the defender conceded a corner kick which concluded with McCann’s header at the back post being blocked and cleared.

The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock on 27 minutes after Martin McBride’s free-kick from 25 yards cracked off the junction of the post and bar.

The Glens, with the wind at their backs, enjoyed another decent spell of pressure but their only reward was another corner-kick which like the ones that had gone before was handled well by the Rabs defence. In stark contrast the corner-kick won by Sawyers on 37 minutes caused chaos in the Glens six-yard box. Played to the back-post McBride headed the ball back into the goal mouth where Cassells tried to head it home only for McGarrity to get a hand to it and then McChesney block Forrester’s attempt to force the loose ball out from a few yards out before McCann hoofed it clear from the goal line.

Menzies initiated the counter-attack for the Glens to break upfield where from the left-hand corner of the penalty box Andrew switched play and picked out the incoming Orsi at the back post to lash a fierce shot from a tight angle that flashed wide of the opposite post.  A minute later Murphy and Andrew combined to set-up Winters to curl a shot from the edge of the box which was well held by Gordon.

Just before the break Cassells good run into the box ended with his shot being deflected wide and the corner-kick that followed was cleared by the home rear guard.

The visitors, now with the strong wind at their back, made a lively start to the new half. Joe Slattery pushed deep into the Glens box to cut the ball across the face of goal which was cleared by Cairns. Soon after Sawyers’ header in the box was easily held by McGarrity. A free-kick floated to the back post was lashed over the bar by Connor Hughes. A corner-kick to the same back-post was knocked back into the danger area where an alert McGarrity snapped it up as Hughes threatened.

Some respite for the Glens as a determined run by Orsi took him to the bye-line before rolling the ball back to Findlay Frye to thump a first time shot that flew over the bar.

The game went through a period where even half chances were drying up as both sides battled the vagaries of the now swirling wind.

Midway through the half the Glens made a tactical change with Kyle McAusland replacing Davie Winters to take up Dan Orsi’s place at right full back, while Orsi pushed forward on the right flank.

Brian McGarrity comes out on top

The visitors enjoyed a good spell of pressure beginning with a corner kick which Forrester met at the back post but his header dipped over the bar. McGarrity had to be alert to push the ball away from the head of Hughes and run to smother the loose ball. The keeper then had to rush from his line to beat Sawyers to a race for a ball into the box taking a sore one from a late tackle; as did the big striker.

Glens were struggling to make any headway against the wind and a well organised Rabs defence other than occasional runs down either flank by Murphy and Orsi.

On 77 minutes Rob Roy brought on Graeme Ramage for Joe Slattery and a minute later Gary Carroll came on for Willie Sawyers, who hadn’t recovered from his tackle on the Glens goalie.

Although McBride did well to fashion a shot from the edge of the ‘D’ the wind-assisted ball flew well over the bar. McGarrity then got down low to hold a low angled shot from Gavin Mackie. Murphy countered with an attack through the middle before picking out Orsi on the right to square the ball into the box for McCann for a snapshot at goal that Gordon held well. McBride made another impressive but again his shooting boots let him down as the ball skewed high and wide of target.

Although the Glens began to see more of the ball unpicking the Rabs defence continued to prove a hard nut to crack.

A minute from time Kirkintilloch made their final substitution with striker Alberto Vezza replacing defender Michael Tuohy.

Into added time and Ally Park won the ball in the middle of the park and squared it to Orsi who then gave Lewis Kinnaird the slip before riding the tackle from Mackie to drive down the right-wing and whipping the ball into the box where the incoming Park got in front of McBride to gloriously guide the ball into the net with the deftest of touches.

While the Glens celebrated what proved to be a 91st minute winner the Rabs were understandably devastated to leave Loch Park with nothing to show for their considerable efforts. If it’s any consolation that boot has been on the other foot a few times this season!

Glenafton’ introduced new signing Davie Winters as they faced Beith at Bellsdale. The visitors shooting up the slope were first to threaten after Mick McCann beat the offside trap only for keeper Stephen Grindlay to block his shot and send the ball high in the air after which Findlay Frye’s cushioned header picked out Joe Andrew to attempt a perfectly executed lob but again the keeper  came out on top as he back-tracked and jumped to push the ball over the bar. At the other end Kevin Green’s header from a corner-kick skimmed off the top of the crossbar. Back came the Glens with a dazzling display of possession football which ended with Alan Cairns clipping the ball into the box for Andrew to pick out Leon Murphy and although he was blocked the ball fell for Ally Park to thunder a low shot from 22 yards that although the keeper spilled it, he quickly recovered to the ball before Andrew could pounce.  The Glens goal then led a charmed life as James Bradley burst into the box and slipped the ball past keeper Brian McGarrity from a tight angle for the inrushing Paul Haggarty with Craig Menzies tracking him,  but somehow the Beith striker couldn’t find the empty net from 2 yards out and as both players stumbled to the ground the ball rolled on before being stopped on the line by the Glens captain’s posterior who then guided it forward to his keeper’s hands. The indirect free kick from 6 yards was rolled back to Bradley only to blast it over the line of Afton men and over the bar.

Beith broke the deadlock after good work by Milliken on the left flank before he cut into the box to fire a killer ball into the goalmouth for Darren Christie to crack into the roof of the net from a few yards out. The home side almost doubled their when a free-kick was floated into the box and  after a game of head tennis the third header saw Nicky Docherty’s effort bounce off the post. The Mighty continued to press for a second but the hal ended with no further scoring.     HT Beith 1 Glens 0

It was Beith’s goal that was charmed when Grindlay failed to hold Dan Orsi’s shot from 25 yards and the in turn efforts from Andrew, McCann and Winters were all blocked. The visitors were now on the front foot and Murphy waltzed into the box before thumping a shot the keeper pushed away with both hands.

aa_leonmurphy00From the centre circle Ryan McChesney launched a high ball into the left hand side of the box where Winters killed it brilliantly with his chest before pushing into the box and at the second attempt he picked out Leon Murphy (left) to guide an angled shot from 12 yards out through a ruck players and into the corner of the net. Findlay Frye then fired a ball over the top of the Beith defence for Winters to run onto in the box only for the keeper to pull off a fine save. At the other end McGarritty pulled off a fine save from Milliken’s volley from inside the box. Played continued at a frantic pace, up and down the slope, as both sides sought out the winner but the game, like the corresponding fixture at Loch Park, finished all square. FT Beith 1 Glens 1

Prior to kick-off there was a minute’s silence in memory of Glenafton Athletic legend Richard “Nodder” Kirkpatrick who recently passed away.

Glens were without top goal scorer Chris Dallas while Ryan McChesney and Ally Park were not available for selection. This was the fourth meeting of the two sides this season with little between the teams in the previous three encounters meetings – Pollok progressing in the Scottish Junior Cup via a penalty shoot-out in the replay at Newlandsfield and the Glasgow side winning the corresponding league fixture with a controversial stoppage time spot kick.

Chances were thin on the ground as play swung frantically from end to end without an end product. Pollok came close on 15 minutes when a free-kick on the right-hand outskirts of the penalty box was whipped into the goalmouth by Stefan McCluskey but it never got beyond the first man Findlay Frye who stuck out a boot only for the ball fly inches his own crossbar. The corner-kick that followed was cleared to the edge of the box for Dale Moore to snap up and drive forward before releasing Dan Orsi wide on the right with a glorious pass but McCluskey was on his heels to nick the ball from his feet at the expense of a corner which was cleanly clutched by keeper Scott Johnson, a promising product of the Pollok youth set-up.

Play continued to flow back and forth interrupted with some midfield battles and hand-balls, deliberate and otherwise. On 23 minutes another battle in the centre circle ended with the official initially awarding the free kick to the Glens before changing his mind. The ball was quickly played upfield to Bryan Young to gather close by corner flag before giving a defender the slip to clip the ball into the box where initially was headed high by Craig Menzies. As the ball descended to edge of the Shaun Fraser edged out Moore in the aerial battle forcing the ball into box where despite Cammy Marlow’s attempt to head it clear Lok striker Adam Forde executed a superb overhead kick that sent the dropping ball into the top corner with the keeper Brian McGarrity rooted to the spot. To add salt the wounds Marlow was booked for questioning the high-boot of Forde.

Five minutes later the striker passed up a great chance to double the visitors lead when a long throw into the box from Grant Evans was headed on by the Ryan McGregor to fall perfectly for Forde but his well struck volley from 12 yards out bulleted wide of the post.

The meaty tackles in the middle of the park continued and after Moore nicked the ball from McCluskey he blocked the midfielder with a swinging arm before pulling him to the ground sparking mini melee. As is often the case in these situations the cop out is to show both the aggressor and the aggressed are shown a yellow card a piece. At the bounce up McGregor and Marlow went eye-to-eye before Evans intervened with a powerful two-handed shove on the Glens player, worthy only of a yellow card.

A minute before half-time Fraser over stepped the mark when breaking through the middle he over hit the ball which allowed Alan Cairns to recover it briefly before the Lok midfielder’s studs chopped him to the ground to earn an instant red.

The home side made a lively start to the second half but within three minutes it was 10 a-side after Dale Moore was late with a tackle on Allan McKenzie earning the midfielder a straight red.

The game settled back into a similar pattern of the first half with half chances at either. Just before the hour mark a Pollok free kick from the left was headed over the bar by Stuart McCann but to both team’s surprise the award was a corner kick. The ball was floated to the back post where Danny Boyle won the aerial battle to head the ball home, however certainly to one team’s surprise the goal was disallowed for Boyle’s push on Kyle McAusland. To rub salt in his wounds Boyle landed badly and never recovered forcing his substitution with Mark Sideserf.

It proved to be a turning with the Glens now very much on the front foot. Leon Murphy picked up the ball wide on the right and after twisting past a couple of defenders curled a great cross into the box for Mick McCann to flick a looping header that looked destined to find the net only for Johnson to pull off a wonderful save to push the ball over the bar. The young keeper then pushed the corner kick away with both hands before recovering the ball from Murphy’s attempt to head it back into the danger area. He then launched the ball upfield and Forde let it take a bounce before trying to lob the ball home but it slipped past the post.

The Glens continued their push for the equaliser with Orsi proving a handful down the right flank. Still the visitors proved a threat on the break and midway through the half Evans cross was cut-out for a corner kick which was headed clear and gathered by Joe Andrew to turn and slip a great pass to Murphy. The dynamic midfielder burst through the middle skipped past the solitary defender to run in on goal only for the advancing goalie to time his run to the edge of the box perfectly to clear the danger.

On 69 minutes Pollok brought on Jamie Henry for Stefan McCluskey and five minutes later Bryan Young was replaced by Jordan Morton. In between times Murphy’s header in the box from a Frye cross drifted wide of the far post.

A free kick floated into box was headed wide by Orsi as Glens continued their strangle hold on the game. On 77 minutes Orsi’s determination down the right won the home side another corner kick which ended with McCann bulleting a header inches over the bar.  A minute later following a goal mouth scramble in the Glens box the home side broke upfield where Andrew on the outskirts of the box slipped the ball to match Marlow’s run into the left-hand side of the box only for the alert keeper to rush from his line again to get a touch to deflect Cammy’s shot off target.  The corner-kick was cleared, as was the one soon after, as Glens turned the screw.

Deep on the left Cairns’s throw in to Andrew on the edge of the box was returned to the attacking full back take a touch before clipping an inch perfect cross for McCann in the six-yard box only for Sideserf to wave flailing arm across the Glens striker face and knock him to the ground – penalty kick. Although Pollok have saved 4 of the last Glens penalties against the up stepped former Pollok player Findlay Frye to drill the ball into the corner of the net beyond the finger-tips of Johnston. The game now all square at 1-1 on 82 minutes.

Pollok could cope with the Glens pressure as the New Cumnock side now pushed for a winner and it came a minute from time.  From a free kick wide on the left Cairns delivered another peach of a cross for McCann but his glancing header from 8 yards out was drifting well wide of the back post and with the Pollok defence motionless Findlay Frye sprinted for the bye-line to guide the ball between keeper and post from the narrowest of angles to spark of joyous celebrations.

The visitors had one last chance after Frye was booked for a foul on the outskirts of the box but the set piece summed up the visitors closing twenty minutes as the ball drifted aimlessly out of play and the points were staying at New Cumnock.

Glens raced to an early with a goal in 3 minutes at Dunterlie. Alan Cairns well advanced down the left flank picked out Joe Andrew at the edge of the box who quickly turned the covering defender to clip the ball across the face of goal and although Mick McCann had a fresh air shot at the near post the incoming Findlay Frye was on hand to drill the ball past keeper  James Digney from six yards. Arthurlie restored parity before the Glens opener could be “tweeted” . A corner kick was played short before the ball was fired into a packed penalty box where it bobbled about before striker Jamie Docherty took possession but quickly lost it again only for the loose ball to be guided into own net by Dan Orsi.

Midway through the half the visitors restored the lead after McCann earned a corner kick which was only partially cleared by the home defence. The Glens recovered the ball and Leon Murphy returned it to the danger area where Scott Nicol mistimed his clearance before Joe Andrew pounced to hit a low shot through legs of Liam Mushet and past the unsighted keeper from 8  yards. Glens were very much on the front foot against a backs-to-the-wall ‘Lie defence creating a hosts of chances that they couldn’t convert and almost paid the price only for captain Craig Menzies last ditch tackle to deny striker James Marks,

The visitors doubled their lead a minute before the break. McCann trapped a weak defensive clearance inside the Arthurlie half and promptly picked out Andrew on the edge of the box who cut it back to apparently complete the one-two with his strike partner only for McCann to dummy the ball and let it roll into the path of Findlay Frye to thunder the ball home from 25 yards.

The visitors came within a whisker of increasing their lead when Andrew threaded a superb ball into the box for Murphy to chase down and drive to the bye-line, holding off a defender all the while and drawing the keeper from his line, before squaring to McCann for a tap-on only for Nicol to stop the ball dead on the line and clear the danger. A fourth goal was soon on the way following a trademark determined foray up front by Menzies which took him to the right hand side of the box where he clipped the ball to Joe Andrew just inside the box. The former Arthurlie striker with his back to goal and holding a defender quickly swivelled and hooked an exquisite shot into the far corner of the net.

A fifth wasn’t far off when Murphy lobbed a wonderful ball into the box to match substitute Ally Park’s run and although he lobbed the ball over Digney’s head it bounced off the top of crossbar and hooked clear by a defender. At the end a Mark’s header from a corner-kick thundered off the post. Both sides created a number of half chances and as the clock run out a Glens corner initiated a game of head tennis beginning with Ryan McChesney at the back post to head back across the face of goal for Dale Moore to perfectly judge a a high looping header that beat the keeper only to smack off the bar and headed out for another corner-kick by Mushet.

Richard ‘Nodder’ Kirkpatrick

Everyone at Glenafton Athletic was saddened to learn that Glenafton legend Richard ‘Nodder’ Kirkpatrick passed away today (9th March 2019) , aged 76 years old. Our thoughts are with Nodder’s family and friends at this sad time.

New Cumnock born Nodder was playing Churches League football with St.Ninians  when he joined Glenafton in the summer of 1961 as an 18-year-old forward. The previous season, their first season at Loch Park, the Glens had won the Western League South Section, winning 20 out of 22 games, but were soundly beaten by Irvine Meadow in the Western League Championship decider.

It would be late in Season 1961/62 before Nodder, a centre forward, made his debut and then scored his first goal in a 6-1 defeat of Nithsdale Wanderers in the league at Loch Park. The Glens went onto win the Western League South Section again before gaining revenge on Meadow to be crowned Western League Champions to add to the Ayrshire Cup claimed a few weeks before.  Nodder finished 3rd in the goalscoring charts with 21 goals behind top goalscorer Danny McCulloch (31) and Billy Paton (28).

Season 1962/63 and Nodder was now the established centre forward forming a memorable partnership with inside left Danny McCulloch. Nodder bagged a hat-trick in his first taste of Scottish Junior Cup football in a 1st round 6-1 home win over Kirrie Thistle. He scored again in a 3rd round 6-1 win at Irvine Vics and his goal at Linlithgow Rose in the 4th secured a replay as the Glens continue their march to the semi-final for the second consecutive season.

They faced Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic in the semi-final at Firhill stadium and it was Nodder that grabbed Glens goal in a 1-1 draw. The replay ended in a 2-2 draw but Nodder was injured and missed the 2nd replay which the New Cumnock side won 3-2 after Danny McCulloch scored the winner deep in extra-time. Sadly Nodder did not recover from injury to be included in the first Glenafton team to appear in a Scottish Junior Cup final and despite taking the lead it was their Ayrshire rivals Irvine Meadow that took the coveted Holy Grail home.  Nodder was back in the side and scored a brace in a 3-1 win over Kello Rovers in the Western League Cup semi-final before defeating the Meadow 3-0 in the final. Glens went on to win he Western League South Division for a third season in a row before beating Beith Juniors in the Western League Championship decider.

Season 1963/64 proved to be a landmark season for Nodder after he set a new goal scoring record for Glenafton with 65 goals in a season; a season in which the Glens scored 210 goals. Nodder’s tally remains a record until this day and is unlikely ever to be beaten, although Norman Montgomery has since equalled it.

A good run in the Scottish Junior Cup came to an end in the 5th round against eventual winners Johnstone Burgh. The Glens won the Western League South Section again to set up another show down with Beith for the Championship decider at Cumnock. Nodder scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory to secure a hat-trick of consecutive Western Championship titles for Glenafton, the first club to do so other than Ardeer Recreation’s five in a row during the limited league of the War Years (1939-45).

In Season 1964/65 Nodder scored 27 goals for the club to take his tally beyond 100 goals, however there was to be no silverware at Loch Park and Kello Rovers claimed the Western League South Section title before Beith overcame the Kirkconnel side to be crowned Western League Champions at the third time of asking.

Season 1965/66 and the Glens won the Western League South Section for the fifth time in six years but lost out to Kilwinning Rangers in the decider for the Championship. Nodder scored the opening goal in the 3-2 win over Whitletts Victoria in the Western League Cup final, however it would be 14 years before the Glens would win another trophy.

Nodder continued to play for the Glens for a couple of more seasons before moving to a very good Kello Rovers side for a time.

The Glens were the dominant force in Ayrshire league football in the early 1960’s during which time they reached the Scottish Junior Cup final for the first time in the club’s history in 1962/63 and Richard ‘Nodder’ Kirkpatrick more than played his part in that great success.

Thirty years later the Glens won the Scottish Junior Cup for the first time under the stewardship of Alan Rough and it was fitting that he along with Danny McCulloch and Richard ‘Nodder’ Kirkpartick were the first three names to be inducted into Glenafton Athletic’s Hall of Fame.

Nodder and his family continued to loyal followers of Glenafton. He was a regular visitor to Loch Park where he will be sorely missed and his name never forgotten. A legend and a true gentleman, RIP Nodder.

_DSC0033 copyGlens hosted an Irvine Meadow side that had won their last 5 league games and more notably after taking only one point from their first seven games now currently sit 2nd in the table with 13 victories under their belt.  In dreadful conditions both sides served up an entertaining game and it was the home side that opened the scoring in the first minute through Joe Andrew (left). The visitors drew level before the break when Roddy Paterson headed home a corner-kick.

Paterson moved Meadow ahead with another fine header this time sourced from a well flighted free kick. The New Cumnock side fashioned an equaliser on 80 minutes with a fine finish from  Mick McCann. Three minutes later Dale Moore concluded a goal mouth scramble to force a later winner for the Glens to secure the three points and leap-frog the Meadow to 2nd place in the league.
