Glens made seven changes to the side that started against Banks O’ Dee last Saturday in came Craig Burns, Edward Campbell, Ryan McChesney, Cameron Marlow, Dan Orsi, Joe Andrew and Ryan Nisbet for David Wilson, Alan Cairns, Craig Pettigrew, Ally Park, Mick McCann, Matthew Reilly and Lee Gallacher.

A minute’s silence was held prior to kick-off to mark Remembrance Day.

Glens made the early running with the first chance coming from a Dale Moore corner kick that keeper David Cherry did well to get down and push it off the line before the ball was scrambled clear. The home side quickly recovered the ball and fed to Moore still wide on the left to float a ball to the back post for the incoming Dan Orsi to side foot into side netting. Thistle’s first chance also came from a corner kick that was headed on by Jack Currie followed by a diving header from defender Adam Boyle that fell into the arms of keeper Craig Burns. The keeper then pulled off a fine finger-tip save a shot blasted from the 18-yard line.

aa_cammy_marlowBack came Glens with lots of possession and crisp passing as they patiently built attacks and on 14 minutes their efforts were rewarded. Cammy Marlow (left) gathered the ball in the centre circle then squared it to Findlay Frye to clip a ball over the top for Dan Orsi to chase down the right flank before whipping it into the goalmouth where it ricocheted off a defender’s legs and fell for the inrushing Marlow to crack a fierce shot from 10 yards out which although the unfortunate keeper got a hand to it the ball bounced off the inside of the post and into the net.

Glens continued to press and a great run down the right by live-wire Ryan Nisbet earned a corner kick that was met at the near post by Ryan McChesney only for his looping header to dip over the bar. Nisbet, having given the defender a head start, won the race for a ball played down the left, then wrong-footed said defender at the edge of the box before chipping the ball into the box for the incoming Orsi only for his header to be comfortably saved by Cherry.

aa_dan_orsi_01The visitors responded and earned back-to-back corners kicks before the home side doubled their lead with a wonderfully worked goal on 28 minutes. Craig Menzies broke down a Thistle attack allowing Frye to snap up the loose ball and feed Nisbet to cleverly pick out Andrew in the centre circle who in turn threaded a perfectly weighted forward pass between two defenders for the overlapping Dan Orsi (right) to drive freely into the box before drilling the ball under the body of the keeper from 10 yards.

Six minutes later Glens extended their lead after Edward Campbell, deep on the left, rolled the ball back to Marlow who picked out Andrew on the left-hand side of the box. The striker held off a defender before pushing for the bye-line and whipping the ball into the box where Marlow pounced on a poor clearance to curl the ball home from 12 yards.

aa_a_mcchesney01It was all Glens and Cherry pulled off a good double save from Nisbet before the hosts added a fourth on the stroke of half time. Moore’s corner kick from the left was headed on and Menzies hunted down the loose ball to turn and fire a low shot through a ruck of players only for Cherry to get down low and push it away.

Frye recovered the ball on the outskirts of the box and slipped it to Moore still in the vicinity of the corner to float a great ball into the edge of the six yard box where Ryan McChesney (left) beat keeper and defender to the cross and bullet home a close range header.

HT Glens 4 Larkhall 0

Although the Glens started off on front foot turning possession in to clear cut chances was proving difficult. Nisbet continued to be a thorn in the Jags side with crosses into the box but Cherry’s  handling was sound.

Credit to Thistle, who were enjoying a decent unbeaten run of form, were determined to take something from the game. Half-hearted claims for a penalty were waved away after a cross into the box missed its target and the ball bounced up onto Campbell’s body.

The visitors’ luck deserted them again soon after. Billy Wilson and Jack Currie combined well down for the former to advance deep into the box and cut the ball back and tee up a ferocious shot from Bartoz Mackiewicz only for keeper Craig Burns to pull off a superb save. Undeterred the big striker fought to win the ball back and from a closer ranger beat the keeper only to be foiled by Menzies headed clearance of the line.

Glens still looked dangerous on the break particularly from the relentless runs of Nisbet another of which set up Moore with a shot from the edge of the box which Cherry took the sting out of with both hands. The home side a couple of changes with Alan Cairns coming on for Edward Campbell and Matthey Reilly for Kyle McAusland.

Another mazy run from Nisbet saw him waltz into the box and lash a low angled shot hat pulled off a decent reflex save from the keeper. Soon after he was tripped on the outskirts of the box and although Cairns curled the resulting free-kick round the wall Cherry got down low to punch the ball to safety.

On 77 minutes Larkhall’s efforts were finally rewarded. After a break into the Glens box had been repelled back came Thistle with another attempt and although this too was cleared the ball fell for substitute Mark Cuthbertson on the 18 yard line to crack an unstoppable shot that beat the airborne Burns before smashing off the underside of the bar the ball deflecting off the grounded goalie and into the net. Glens made their final change with Mick McCann coming on for Findlay Frye as the home side continued to threaten while Thistle too were eager to add to their tally but neither keeper was to beaten again.

Glenafton 2 Banks O’ Dee 1

  • Sat 02 NOV 2019 KO 2:00 pm
  • Macron Scottish Junior Cup| 3rd round

  • Glenafton Athletic 2 (0) |Andrew, Orsi

The Glens made two changes to the eleven that started against Rob Roy with Craig Menzies and Ally Park replacing Dan Orsi and Cameron Marlow for this Scottish Junior Cup 3rd round tie with Banks O’ Dee, in the first meeting between the two clubs.

aa_DSC_6679.JPG

The home side started brightly with Dale Moore’s shot from 20 yards pulling off a good save from keeper Andy Shearer.   Glens looked lively on both flanks with Lee Gallacher on the right and Matthew Reilly on the left, the young midfielder time and again turning defenders as he drove for the bye-line before cutting the ball back into the box.

bb_DSC_6736.JPG

Matthew Reilly on the move

On 11 minutes Findlay Frye gathered the ball at the edge of box and forced his way forward between two defenders, before all three on the ground and the Glens midfielder’s appeal for a penalty waved away.  Meanwhile the keeper retrieved the loose ball and launched it up the left flank for Robert Armstrong to chase and burst into the box only for Craig Menzies to make a superb tackle before he could square to Ryan Hall for a tap in.

Stuart Duff then broke down a Glens move in the middle of the park and Dee broke upfield where Kane Winton won his side the first corner kick of the game. It was Winton that got the jump on the Glens defence to head home the opening goal on 13 minutes.

Four minutes later Duff threaded a great diagonal ball into the box for Mark Gilmour to cut in from the right only for keeper David Wilson to rush from his line and dive at Gilmour’s feet to get a hand to the ball and deflect it off the midfielder’s shin for a goal kick.

Back came the hosts and Ally Park picked out Moore on the outskirts of the left-hand side of the box who took a touch before skipping past a defender and curling a shot from 20 yards that whizzed past the post. Soon after another Reilly rush down the left earned the Glens their first of three corner kicks in quick succession all of which the Dee defence handled stoutly including one that Kyle McAusland tried to force home at the back post.

Hall did well to set up Michael Philipson to tee up a shot from just inside the box before Alan Cairns made a timely tackle to clear the danger.  Glens responded with Reilly and McCulloch combining down the left to win another corner kick which Shearer rushed from his line to punch clear with both fists.

On 24 minutes Winton’s long ball down the right was chased down by the lively Philipson who quickly inside leaving a trail of defenders in his wake before drilling a low shot from the edge of the “D” that lacked the power to test Wilson. However, this sparked a spell of pressure that delivered Dee three consecutive corner kicks one of which Mick McCann’s defensive header off the line denied Gilmour a certain goal.

The game continued to rage in traditional Junior cup style and inevitably a couple of flash points that resulted in yellow cards which were accepted without too much of a fuss.

bb_DSC_7084.JPG

Andy Shearer touches Dale Moore’s shot round the post

On 34 minutes Gallacher switched play from right to left to match Moore’s run for the far side of the box. Here he gathered the ball before wrong footing a defender and curling a shot past another that appeared to evade the diving keeper at full stretch only to sneak inches wide of the back post. In fact the keeper was adjudged to get his finger tips to the ball and a corner was awarded. This was cleared only for Glens to regain possession and continue to press without success.

Play continued to flow or perhaps grind from end to as both teams gave all in the run up to the break in a cracking cup-tie.

HT Glens 0 Dee 1

Glens enjoyed the early pressure but Dee always looked dangerous on the break with slick passing and making good use of both flanks. On 54 minutes Winton pushed forward and picked out Ryan Hall’s run to the back post for a tap in it seemed, only for keeper David Wilson to rush from his line to rob the striker with an outstretched leg.

Wison in action again

Back came Glens through Craig Menzies floating the ball into a busy box which was headed clear  to the feet of Findlay Frye who quickly squared the ball to substitute Dan Orsi to blast a shot from 22 yards that cannoned off the keeper’s chest before fellow sub Joe Andrew pounced on the loose ball to fire home from 6 yards out. The tie now all square on 70 minutes.

Andrew came close to adding a second on 73 minutes after turning in the box and lashing an angled shot from 12 yards that beat the air-borne keeper but sailed just wide of target. On 79 minutes the home side’s efforts were rewarded with Reilly the architect through another determined run down the left flank before whipping a superb ball into the box where Andrew’s header was met by the incoming Dan Orsi to bullet home a header for 2-1.

Glens continued to threaten and on 84 minutes Frye’s shot from 15 yards whizzed over the bar.  A minute later however Dee earned a penalty kick after Ally Park brought Winton down in the box. Up stepped Stuart Duff to smack the ball firmly only for Wilson at full stretch to magnificently push the ball round the post.

In the closing minutes the Glens survived a couple of dangerous forays by the Dee, one ending in the safe hands of Wilson the other cleared by Craig Pettigrew after an almighty scramble deep in the box.

An enthralling Scottish Junior Cup tie came to a close with Glens coming from behind to progress to the 4th round.

  • Loch Park, New Cumnock
  • Glenafton Athletic 3 (0) |Reilly, McCann, Moore

Glenafton made five changes to the eleven that started against Rossvale with Alan Cairns, Kyle McAusland, Cammy Marlow, Mick McCann and Matthew Reilly replacing Craig Menzies, Edward Campbell, Ryan McChesney, Ally Park and Ryan Nisbet.

aa_lee_gallacherThe Glens looked lively from the start with former Rabs midfielder Lee Gallacher (left) in the thick of the action. His first corner kick of the game was palmed away from under the bar by keeper John Hutchison. Gallacher then picked out Matthew Reilly in the box to blast a low angled shot that Hutchison did well to push away with both hands.  He then gathered a ball on the right from Dan Orsi before slipping it into the box for Findlay Frye to run on to and crack a low drive that beat the keeper only for it to crash off the post and rebound at speed towards Mick McCann and despite his best efforts his header sailed over the bar.

The Rabs were only seen in flashes as an attacking force. Martin McBride curled a wicked free kick from 30 yards out that keeper David Wilson punched wide of target and the corner that followed was cleared.

Back came Glens through Craig Pettigrew driving forth before clipping a forward pass for McCann to dummy and Frye to collect, burst into the box and shoot only for an alert Hutchison to block the ball an outstretched foot. His counterpart Wilson had to be equally alert to rush from his line to dive at the feet of Ewan MacPherson after a good break down the left. Kyle McAusland broke down another Rabs attack just inside the Glens’ half before driving forward and unleashing a shot from 30 yards out that whizzed past the post.

Glens continued to press with some excellent build up play. On 35 minutes Orsi played a peach of long through ball into the box for Frye and in a flash, he turned an cracked a low shot that beat the keeper only for Scott Forrester to hook clear from 2 yards shy of the goal-line.

Unbelievably, a minute later the Rabs broke the deadlock with a stroke of good fortune. MacPherson’s header from a corner-kick took a deflection which Wilson did well to get down low to push off the post only for the ball to then to deflect off Dan Orsi and end up in his own net.

With their tails up the Rabs went in search of a second and four minutes before the break MacPherson gathered a long ball down the left at the corner flag, cut inside past a defender before striking a sweet shot that an air-borne pushed away with both hands.

HT Glens 0 Rabs 1

aa_matthew_reilly_02The half-time oranges rejuvenated the Glens zest. Dale Moore fashioned a fine volley in a packed box from a Gallacher’s corner only for the ball to dip inches over the bar. Both sides exchanged corner-kicks before the home side drew level on 52 minutes. Wilson’s goal kick was headed on by McCann and the ball snapped up by Gallacher on the outskirts of the right-hand side of the box where he took 3 defenders out of play before squaring the ball for McCann to hit first time from 18 yards only for the ball to strike a defender. An alert Matthew Reilly (left) pounced on the loose ball and although the advancing keeper got a hand to his shot the ball took another bounce or two before crossing the line.

Glenafton Athletic squad (5)Two minutes later the home side stormed into the lead. Pettigrew picked up the ball deep in his own half and motored forward through the middle with Gallacher to the right matching his run on the overlap. However, with defenders continuing to back off the elegant defender progressed to the outskirts of the box and rather than feed the overlapping Gallacher he clipped the ball into the heart of the box for the incoming Moore and although couldn’t connect the ball run on freely for the inrushing Mick McCann (left) to guide the ball past the keeper from 8 yards out.

aa_dale_moore_01Rob Roy were rocked and the Glens were stroking the ball about in style and on 58 minutes they extended their lead with another wonderfully worked goal. From a throw-in deep on the right the ball was played back to Cameron Marlow who curled a magnificent ball over the top of defenders for the beckoning Reilly to kill it dead at the corner of the penalty box. He then threaded a short pass to Dale Moore (right) at the edge of the six yard box and with his back to goal along with a defender for company, he wheeled round and from 12 yards lashed an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the net.

The visitors slowly recovered from the six minute three goal blitz and fashioned some decent half chances with MacPherson in particular putting in a good shift.

Glens came close to adding a fourth after Orsi and McCann combined to set Marlow up for a powerful shot from the edge of the box that was well saved by Hutchison and the loose ball eventually scrambled clear.  The Rabs responded with a free kick from wide on the left floated to the back post but Jay McInally’s header sneaked wide of the target. At the other end Reilly’s close-range header from Gallacher’s cross suffered the same fate.

Half chances came and went but there was to be no further scoring.

A GAME TO DRAW A VALE OVER FOR GLENS

Prior to kick-off both teams joined in the centre circle to show their support for the “Show Racism the Red Card” campaign as part of Junior football day of action.

aa_glens_racismredcard_03.JPG

With Kyle McAusland and Joe Andrew unavailable for selection Glens made two changes to the eleven that started against Beith last week bringing in Ryan McChesney and Ryan Nisbet.

Glenafton welcomed Rossvale to Loch Park in the first ever meeting between the two clubs, the Bishopbriggs side now managed by former Glenafton player David Gormley.

Visitors Vale got off to a flying start with a goal on 2 ½ minutes after Joe Slattery broke down the right to pick out Sean Higgins in the box who quickly squared the ball for Liam McGonigle. He took a touch to Anthony Higgins but his shot at goal came off McGonigle who then cleverly controlled the ball before giving keeper David Wilson no chance from a few yards out.

bb_DSC_5333.JPG

Liam McGonigle opens the scoring

Soon after Del McNab cut into the box from the left-hand side and played a neat one-two with Anthony Higgins before firing a shot from a narrow angle that beat Wilson at his near post and slipped inches wide of the back post. The movement of the pair continued to trouble the Glens defence.

The home side were struggling to get their passing game going and were often bogged down in the middle of the park while any attacks were mopped up by a defiant defence ably supported by Thomas Sinclair who would go on to have an outstanding game.

On 11 minutes however Ryan Nisbet outleapt the centre backs to get on the end of a Craig Menzies cross into the box only for his powerful looping header from 15 yards to be pushed over the bar by both hands of keeper Jamie Donnelly. The goalie then towered above attackers and defenders to punch the resulting corner kick well clear, again with both hands.

After breaking down the left wing A. Higgins picked out McGonigle’s run into the far side of the penalty box only for his cut-back to be blocked for a corner kick which ended with McNab’s knock-on being squeezed inches wide by Sean Higgins under pressure from Wilson.

On 15 minutes the lively McNab burst into the box only for Ryan McChesney to time his tackle to perfection and the striker’s appeals for a spot kick waved away. Minutes later McChesney mishit a clearance straight to McGonigle but he skewed his shot well wide of target leaving both players with their head in their hands.

bb_DSC_5408.JPG

Dan Orsi and Anton McDowall challenge for the ball

Vale continued to move the ball about quickly while Glens laboured. However just as the Glens enjoyed a spell pressure resulting in back-to-back corner kicks the visitors doubled their lead. Donnelly’s long clearance into the Glens box fell for A. Higgins who tumbled after contact by defender Edward Campbell.  Namesake Sean Higgins slammed home the spot-kick beyond Wilson at full stretch to make it 2-0 on 26 minutes.

bb_DSC_5549

Sean Higgins slams home spot kick

On the half hour mark Glens replaced defender Ryan McChesney with striker Mick McCann, with right full back Craig Menzies now partnering Craig Pettigrew in the centre of defence and Dan Orsi dropping back to the right back.  Four minutes later Nisbet picked out McCann just inside the box and his flashing header had keeper Donnelly scurrying across his line as the ball bounced just off target.

bb_DSC_5594.JPG

Mick McCann wins the header

At the other end McNab broke free into the box forcing Wilson to rush from his line only for back-tracking Menzies to nick the ball from his feet.

Lee Gallacher and Dan Orsi began to see more of the ball down the flanks and together won a couple of corner kicks that were well defended, with Sinclair the driving force.

Vale still enjoyed the occasional break and Wilson showed safe hands to hold A. Higgins’ curled shot from the edge of the box.

Back came Glens through a lightning break down the left by Nisbet only to be scythed down by the back-tracking Anton MacDowall with no action other than a free-kick which was headed cleared and the ball eventually recovered by Nisbet to initiate another attack that concluded with a yellow card for a “dive” by the striker.

HT Glens 0 Rossvale 2

Glens made a change at the start of the second half with Ally Park making way for Cameron Marlow.

The home side started the half brightly and Donnelly was quickly called into action to punch away a dangerous cross from Orsi. At the other end Pettigrew outjumped McGonigle to head clear a free-kick floated into the box.

Back came Glens and McCann slipped a short pass to Findlay Frye in the “D” with Peter Bradley at his back and in a flash, he turned to thunder a shot that was pushed round the post spectacularly by Donnelly.

bb_DSC_5810.JPG

Gallacher’s corner kick was won in the air by Pettigrew and the loose ball fell into a pack of players congregated on the edge of the six-yard box where it was recovered by Dan Orsi. He then shielded the ball before slipping it back to Pettigrew who from 8 yards out drilled a low shot through the pack, past Donnelly and two defenders on the goal-line to halve the deficit on 55 minutes.

bb_DSC_5823.JPG

Rossvale replaced goal scorer McGonigle with Gary Giffen and he was soon in the thick of it with a fine pass inside to Sean Higgins to fire a screamer of a shot from 25 yards out that whizzed inches wide of the post, although Wilson’s seemed to have it covered.

The game was punctuated by free-kicks and the Vale fell off the pace for a spell as Glens pressed for an equaliser without however creating any chances from open play other than speculative shots from the outskirts of the box from Nisbet and Gallacher.

A couple of half chances came their way from set pieces including a free kick floated into the box where Slattery did enough to prevent Moore from getting a touch at the back post. The resulting corner-kick had the home side claiming for a spot-kick after David Leadbetter pushed Pettigrew to the ground; the referee deciding the infringement occurred before the corner had been taken.

bb_DSC_5909.JPG

waiting on the free-kick

Vale threatened on the break and Slattery’s sweet strike from 25 yards deflected off Menzies and just wide of the post which was followed by back-to-back corner kicks for the visitors before the Glens regained the offensive. On 70 minutes the visitors brought on Jackson Biggar for Sinclair, his hard shift was over.

Try as they might Glens could not convert possession into attempts at goal and with ten minutes to go the task on hand took a blow after they were reduced to 10 men following Ryan Nisbet’s second yellow card after raising an arm in a tackle on Slattery.

Both sides made changes with Glens bringing on Alan Cairns for Edward Campbell and Vale replacing Anthony Higgins with Paul Brennan.

On 83 minutes Gallacher’s free kick deep into the box saw Donnelly and McDowall combine to force the ball wide as Moore threatened and the corner kick that followed was mopped up.

bb_DSC_6091

Dale Moore goes close

Five minutes later it was Orsi’s cross from tight on the right that had Moore and McDowall challenging for the ball at the back post again only for the Glens man to be penalised. Four minutes into added time another Gallacher free kick was well defended in what proved to be the last action of the match.

Glenafton made two changes to the eleven that started against West Calder last Saturday with Alan Cairns and Cameron Marlow replaced by Edward Campbell and Ally Park.

Although the first half was played at a lively pace there were few clear-cut chances on offer to break the deadlock. Beith looked the more lively in the early exchanges with the best of the chances falling to Paul Frize the first of which saw the midfielder force his way deep into box before firing wide and the second his powerful run through the middle ended with his equally powerful shot from 22 yards whizzing inches wide of the post.  The Glens showed their teeth later in the half with Dan Orsi cutting in from wide on the right before curling a shot from the corner of the box which bulged the side netting while Lee Gallacher’s free-kick from the edge of the “D” beat the wall before dipping inches over the bar.

HT Glens 0 Beith 0

aa_dan_orsi_01The home side made the breakthrough on 51 minutes after Dan Orsi (above) gathered the ball and with defender Conner McGlinchey on his tail drilled a low angled shot from 22 yards out, beyond the outstretched arm of diving goalie Stephen Grindlay and into the corner of the net.

With their tails up the Glens played some wonderful stuff turning defence into attack with slick and timely passing. Craig Pettigrew cut out a ball on the edge of his own box before driving forward and threading a long upfield pass to Joe Andrew to touch back to Findlay Frye who quickly played it forward to Dale Moore for the midfielder to brilliantly disguise a dummy and let the ball run on for Lee McCulloch bursting down the right on the overlap and into the box only for his final ball, aimed for Orsi, to be cut out by the keeper.

Soon after Kyle McAusland, deep in his own half, nicked the ball from the lively Joe Bradley and the loose ball gathered by Frye who played it down the right for McAusland on the overlap and in turn he picked out Gallacher who with quick feet  bamboozled two defenders before completing his one-two with McAusland for the defender to whip a wicked ball into box which the alert Grindlay safely held as the incoming Frye threatened.

Some respite for the visitors as Kier Milliken’s perseverance on the left hand side of the Glens box saw him hold defenders off before hooking a high ball over to the far side of the box where Darren Christie let it take a bounce before cracking a powerful net-bound volley only for Edward Campbell to make a brave block.

Play continued at a frantic pace. Back came the Glens through McAusland’s long clearance down the right wing for Gallacher to hunt down then drive into the box, hold up the ball before squaring it for the inrushing Frye only for Grindlay to push his shot wide of the post.

The relentless attacking play paid off on 56 minutes when Dan Orsi doubled the home side’s lead after holding off defender Ryan Docherty at the right hand corner of the penalty box before turning and unleashing another powerful low drive that flew past the diving Grindlay and into the same corner of the net as his first goal.

Beith halved the deficit on 67 minutes after McGlinchey’s free kick from deep in his own half into the Glens’ box was chased down by substitute Kenny McLean to cut it back to Bradley on the left who lofted a great ball into the box for Paul Frize to leap and bullet a header into the far corner of the net.

aa_dale_moore_01The home side restored their two-goal cushion four minutes later. Gallacher holding up the ball wide on the right and timing his short pass inside for McAusland to take a touch or two before sending a peach of the ball from the right hand corner of the penalty box to the left hand corner of the six yard box for the unmarked Orsi to send a perfectly cushioned header square across the face of goal for Dale Moore to meet on the drop and give the keeper no chance from close range.

Beith had a couple of chances from set pieces but both headers, one from Sean McIroy and the other from Kevin Green were off target.

aa_findlay_frye_01.JPGAs the game drew to a close chances were thinner on the ground. Campbell kept his cool to break broke down a Beith attack on the outskirts of the box and send the ball upfield for Andrew to lay off to Frye in the centre circle. The midfielder clipped a ball to substitute Ryan Nisbet wide on the right to cut inside and force his way to the outskirts of the box and slip the ball through for the inrushing Findlay Frye (left) to take a touch with his left to set up a shot with his right which he fired past the advancing Grindlay to put the Glens 4-1 up on 83 minutes.

GLENS TAKE THE BISCUIT WITH A BAKER’S DOZEN.

Glenafton made two changes to the eleven that started at Kilbirnie last week with Ally Park and Matthew Reilly making way for Dan Orsi and Lee Gallacher

Glenafton’s constant pressure and clinical finishing put a young and gallant West Calder side to the sword at Loch Park with seven unanswered goals in the first half and six in the second.  Craig Pettigrew opened the scoring on 13 minutes with a thundering shot from 30 yards plus that gave keeper Ian Moffat no chance, a screamer to register his first competitive goal for the club.

aa_a_goal_01f

Two minutes later Kyle McAusland’s cut back from the bye-line was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Jack Wood. On 20 minutes  McAusland volleyed home a third from the corner of the six yard box high into the opposite top corner of the net.

aa_a_goal_03b.JPG

Three minutes later Lee Gallacher’s powerful to the bye-line on the left hand side of the box ended with his cut-back into the box eventually falling for Dale Moore on the 18 yard line to whack a shot through a crowded box to bulge the net with some force.

aa_a_goal_04.JPG

Three minutes after that, Moore turned provider to clip the ball from deep on the left hand side of the box to the back post where Dan Orsi ghosted in to guide the ball home.

aa_a_goal_05b

Further chances came and went, including Gallacher’s goal disallowed for offside, before Cameron Marlow made it 6-0 on 42 minutes from 7 yards;  stroking home an inch perfect square ball from Craig Menzies.

aa_a_goal_06

A minute later Orsi whipped in a dangerous ball from the right into the goalmouth which was misjudged by the keeper resulting in the ball rolling over the line.

HT Glens 7 West Calder 0

West Calder brought on Andrew Dunnet for Ian Moffat, their only substitute and the young keeper was soon in the thick of the action as Glens continued to turn the screw through chances from Andrew. Credit to the visitors as they looked to build a couple of attacks of their own. On 50 minutes Jai Smith’s low-angled shot from the right whizzed wide of the far post and soon after McAusland and Menzies combined to block out Joseph Johnson.  Tired legs at the back however ended with Jack Wood tripping Dale Moore in the box before Findlay Frye fired home the spot kick to make it 8-0 on 56 minutes.

aa_a_goal_08a

Glens brought on fresh legs with Alan Cairns and Joe Andrew making way for Edward Campbell and Ryan Nisbet.  On the hour mark the latter threaded a ball into the box for Frye to chase down only for the Dunnet to rush from his line and force him wide with a posse of defenders in pursuit, however  he kept his cool to roll the ball back for Dale Moore to pick his spot from 8 yards out.

aa_a_goal_09

Although the Glens remained ruthless in attack West Calder kept their heads and determined in their pursuit of a consolation and on 63 minutes came close to being rewarded.  Johnson’s angled shot from deep in the box forced keeper David Wilson into a fine save at the near post and McAusland’s timely tackled denied the incoming Andy Kennedy from forcing the loose ball in at the back post.  Glens broke upfield where Jack Frame’s trip on Nisbet in the box earned the home side a second penalty.  Although Dunnet came within a whisker of getting his hand to Frye’s kick low to the keeper’s right hand post the Glens were now ten up on 65 minutes.

aa_a_goal_10A.JPG

Some West Calder players were now suffering from cramp or knocks they had picked and with no substitutes admirably soldiered on. On 70 minutes Moore run through on goal and shot past the advancing keeper to complete his hat-trick before  being replaced by Ryan McChesney.

aa_a_goal_11.JPG

During another frantic spell the home side created several other chances without adding to their tally while at the other end Pettigrew and McChesney held off a dual attack from Fisher and Johnson, the latter’s appeal for a push in the box waved away. On 84 minutes  Ryan Nisbet charged down the ball before racing into the box and rifling a terrific shot into the roof of the net for his first Glenafton goal.

aa_a_goal_12B

Two minutes later he bagged his brace after Dunnet pulled off a brilliant block from a close range Orsi effort only for the ball to fall for Nisbet just inside the penalty box to bullet a low shot through a ruck of players and into the net to make it 13-0 and complete the scoring.

Thank you Brian

aa_brian_201920.JPG

Glenafton Athletic can confirm that goalkeeper Brian McGarrity is hanging up his gloves after being side-lined following  another serious injury at the start of the season. This is devastating news for Brian, the club and its supporters. Everyone at the club appreciates this has been a painful and emotional decision for Brian  to make. We hope by way of consolation that Brian   realises the huge impact he has made at the Glens, both on and off the park, and that he and his family will have happy memories to look back on as well as a clutch of medals.

Brian first caught the eye of Glenafton supporters in a league game for Annbank United almost 10 years ago in season 2010/11 when he saved a penalty from Craig McEwan on his Glens debut at New Pebble Park.  He had also caught the eye of Auchinleck Talbot and moved to Beechwood the following season as cover to Andy Leishman where in the   Evening Times Cup Winners Cup Quarter-final he saved two Glens spot-kicks to ensure the home side won the shoot-out.

Brian joined Glenafton at the start of Season 2013/14 and made his debut in the Ardagh Cup Sectional match in a narrow 3-2 defeat at Beechwood, a deflected own goal winning it for Talbot two minutes from time. In the last game of the season he earned his first Glens medal, as runners-up in the Scottish Junior Cup final. Brian’s first honour came at the start of the following season in the Ardagh Cup, a competition they seem destined to exit at the Quarter-final stage after trailing 2-0 away at Whitletts Victoria. However, two late goals forced a penalty shoot-out and incredibly Brian saved four-in-a-row to put the Glens through. A clean sheet in the final against Talbot saw the Glens run out 2-0 winners.

The next cup final was also against Auchinleck Talbot in the Scottish Junior Cup final of 2016/17 at Rugby Park.  Brian kept a clean sheet from the 3rd round through to the two-legged semi-final against the strongly fancied Bonnyrigg Rose – 6 games in total before the 2-1 victory over Talbot at Rugby Park.

By that time Glens had already been crowned West Region Premier Champions and went on to win The Evening Times League Champions Cup where Brian kindly stepped aside to allow back up keeper Blair Lochhead to play.

The following Glenafton gained entry to the William Scottish Cup and progressed through two Preliminary Rounds and then the 1st and 2nd rounds proper where clean sheets were delivered. In the 3rd round the Glens gave a great account of themselves before losing 2-0 away to Championship side Livingston, who would go on to win promotion to the Premier Division.

Last season Brian added a first to his Glens record when he scored a late winner in a West of Scotland Cup tie with a kick from his own box catching his counterpart off his line.

However, the season ended prematurely for him with injury forcing him to miss out in the last five games.  In his third game of this season injury struck again requiring Brian to be substituted at half time at Beechwood Park. Sadly, it seems his Glenafton career has come to a close where it began in a game against Auchinleck Talbot. In his six full seasons with  Glenafton Athletic he made 196 appearances and scored 1 goal; add the three appearances for this season he falls one short of two hundred appearances for the Glens.

The final word comes manager Craig McEwan  “I am distraught to be putting this out there as not only has Brian been an excellent servant to the Glens but I have made a friend. Do not be a stranger mate and I hope you are about the place to allow me to keep pestering you to return.”

Thank you Brian

Prior to kick-off a minute’s applause took place in memory of Kilbirnie Ladeside supporter Scott Falconer who sadly passed away recently.

Glenafton made one change to the starting eleven that faced Troon last Saturday with Ryan Nisbet making way for Matthew Reilly.

In glorious sunshine on a bowling green of a pitch the visitors were soon stamping their authority on the game pressing forward in numbers. On 5 minutes Dale Moore slipped a through ball for Joe Andrew to chase down on the right-hand side of the box before squaring across the edge of the six-yard box for the incoming Moore only for Hughes to intercept at the expense of a corner kick which was headed clear.

Kyle McAusland and Moore then played a one-two through the middle before the former clipped a balled into the far end of box which was gathered by Matthew Reilly and rolled back for Moore to thump a shot that was well blocked by Michael O’Byrne. The resulting corner was again headed clear but the ball quickly recovered by Findlay Frye to feed Craig Pettigrew on the outskirts of the box only for his shot to sail high and wide of the target.

bb_DSC_3712

Most of the play was taking place in the Ladeside half with the home side enjoying the occasional break that would fritter out.

On 16 minutes Moore made another powerful run through the middle which was ended with a fouljust outside the “D”. Although McAusland’s free kick rebounded off the wall the hungrier Glens regained and patiently kept possession to go again and their efforts rewarded with another corner kick that was clutched cleanly by keeper Joe Wilton.

Midway through the half Ladeside broke when John Kelly picked up a pass from O’Byrne and tried his luck from 25 yards but the shot lacked power to test David Wilson, the young keeper cleanly catching with both hands.

Back came the visitors as the lively Reilly drove through the middle before he picked out Frye in the box but with no way through, he slotted the ball back to McAusland to instantly thread the ball back into the box for Moore to lash home from 12 yards out, but from a yard offside.

bb_DSC_3634

Reilly and Moore combined well down the left to win the Glens another corner-kick which was mopped up well by Kelly.  Joe Andrew then held off two defenders in the box before picking out the incoming McAusland to fire an angled shot that flew over the bar.

On 27 minutes Reilly and Moore initiated another attack that concluded with the latter trying to pick out Andrew in the six-yard box only for Hughes to make a timely intervention to clear the danger.

Ladeside broke down a Glens attack in the centre circle releasing Finlay down the left to drive for the box where he was robbed of the ball by Pettigrew.  Soon after Finlay had a second bite at the cherry and on reaching the box squared the ball for Joe Scullion only for Craig Menzies to cut out and clear.  At the other end O’Byrne matched Menzies with a timely tackle on Park just inside the box.

bb_DSC_3776

On 33 minutes the home side passed up a great chance to break the deadlock after Wood whipped in a dangerous ball from wide on the right which flew over the head of the leaping Frye but caught Scullion on the six yard line off guard and the ball bounced off his feet and inches wide of the post.

After a brief water-break for both sides, Scullion almost made amends when from the edge of the box he cracked a low angled shot that Wilson did well to get down low and at full stretch push the ball away which was booted clear by Menzies as Finlay threatened.

Back came Glens through Andrew chipping a ball into the box for Moore to hunt down with Kelly for company. The Glens midfielder appeared to get the better of the duel and progress to the edge of the six-yard box as Kelly stumbled to the ground but before he could tee up a shot the whistle went for a free kick to the home side.  A minute later Park got between two defenders to win the race for the ball only for his attempt to lob the advancing keeper from 16 yards out fly over the bar.

Incredibly despite dominating much of the first half the Glens went a goal down with the last kick of the first half. Ladeside won a corner of the left, their first of the game, where Finlay played it short for a one-two with Peter McGill before picking out Scullion on the edge of the box and although his first touch was poor he regained control of the ball, evaded two defenders before  leathering a low angled shot beyond the reach of Wilson into the far corner of the net.

bb_DSC_3910

HT Ladeside 1 Glens 0

The Glens started the second half brightly. Reilly earned an early corner-kick that came to nothing; there was a half-hearted shout for a handball in the box; Hughes close attention forced Moore to shoot narrowly wide from 6 yards out ; Moore then did well to manufacture a shot from the corner of the box that drifted wide of target and Reilly curled a dangerous ball into the box that Wilton palmed away.

bb_DSC_4173.JPG

Ladeside reacted with a double substitution on 52 minutes with James Finlay and Connor McVey making way for Jamie Longworth and Chris Craig.

The tide began to turn in the home side’s favour which saw them dominate large passages of play in the remainder of the half and create the best of the chances on offer.

Scullion floated a free kick deep into the box that was headed wide by Menzies for a corner kick which Scullion also executedas Ladeside pegged the Glens back for quite a spell which included further free kicks and corner kicks that were defended resolutely.

On 65 minutes the visitors made a double substitution with Dan Orsi and Lee Gallacher coming on for Ally Park and Matthew Reilly.

A minute later Mitchell, from close to the right-hand corner flag, clipped a ball to the back where Ferry leapt head and shoulders above others only for his header to dip inches over the bar.

Glens were now seldom seen as a serious attacking force with the few breaks that they conjured up petering out and Ladeside responding with another period of sustained pressure.

The visitors made their final substitution on 73 minutes with Ryan Nisbet replacing Joe Andrew and the game slowly became more evenly balanced in terms of possession and the few remaining chances.

With 10 minutes to go O’Byrne, deep in the box with his back to goal, was the target of a long throw in from the left which he cutely tried to guide into the net with an overhead kick only for the ball to drop kindly into the hands of Wilson. At the other end Frye’s shot from the edge of the box was blocked and he quickly recovered the loose ball to feed Orsi with his shot flying over the bar.

bb_DSC_4341

On 83 minutes Kilbirnie made their final substitution with Darren McLean coming on for goalscorer Scullion. The game continued to drift back and forth and the final chance fell for Longworth who was denied a last minute goal by a fine save from Wilson.

GLENS SINK SEASIDERS

Glenafton made three changes to the eleven that started against Clydebank last Saturday with Kyle McAusland, Dale Moore and Ryan Nisbet coming in for Dan Orsi, Lee Gallacher and Mick McCann. On the bench was young striker Matthew Reilly who has joined the club on a loan deal from the St.Mirren.

The home side opened the scoring on 8 minutes after Findlay Frye robbed Troon of the ball wide on the right before cutting inside and riding a tackle at the edge of the box which saw the ball break free and Ryan Nisbet brilliantly bring it under control taking two defenders out of play before slipping it to Ally Park  (left) to beat the offside trap and lash the ball high into the net from 15 yards. Glens enjoyed the best of the remaining chances in the half. Park came within a whisker of bagging a brace but was inches away from making contact with a great ball into the box to tap from a few yards while late Dale Moore’s lob over the advancing keeper drifted inches wide of the post.

HT Glens 1 Troon 0

Keeper Scott Johnstone’s outstretched leg stopped Ryan Nisbet from doubling the host’s lead after being set up by Moore. The visitors drew level on 54 minutes after a great ball into the box took out on the defence allowing Dylan Pooler to chase down the ball and slot it beyond keeper David Wilson as he charged from his line.

Two minutes later the Glens drew level in clinical fashion. Frye from the centre circle lofted a high ball to right hand edge of the penalty box where Park leapt to send a cushioned header to the edge of the six-yard box and a bounce later Joe Andrew crashed the ball into the net.

Play was flowing back and forth with both sides creating some decent chances and the game was still very much in the balance. On 77 minutes Troon won a corner on the right but the out swinging kick drifted out the box and in a flash Kyle McAusland threaded a fantastic ball upfield  between two defenders on the half way line while a third played substitute Matthew Reilly onside leaving him free to gather the ball and charge upfield where he kept his cool to round the advancing keeper and slot the ball into the empty net for a fantastic debut goal.

Although other chances came and went for both sides there was no further scoring.

Prior to kick-off a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the 69th  anniversary of the Knockshinnoch Disaster in which 13 miners lost their lives at Knockshinnoch Castle Colliery on 7th September 1950.

aa_DSC_2463.JPG

Glens kicked off with the same starting eleven that won at Pollok last Saturday. In Bankies line-up was former Glenafton midfielder Conor Lynass while in the dug-out was former Glenafton player Gordon Moffat taking over as boss following the departure of former Glenafton player / coach Kieran McAnespie.

Glens were first to show on 5 minutes from a corner kick that was headed clear to the “D” for Craig Pettigrew to leather a shot first time which was deflected out for a throw. This too was headed clear and the ball fell for Mick McCann only for his shot from inside to be blocked before Cameron Marlow hammered a low shot forcing a fine save from keeper Marc Waters. Although Joe Andrew gathered the loose ball deep in the box and rolled it back to Dan Orsi his shot drifted wide of the far post.

Bankies enjoyed some pressure down the right flank with Cammy McClair in the thick of things without however creating any real chances.

bb_DSC_2477.JPG

Former Bankie Joe Andrew on the ball

The Glens were seeing a lot of the ball in the middle of the park but making inroads into the box was proving more difficult. On 15 minutes Dan Orsi and Lee Gallacher combined down the right and with no way through the latter was forced to retreat before curling a shot from 20 yards out which sailed wide of target.

Waters launched the ball upfield and a knock-on from Chris Black saw Conor Lynass chase the ball into box only for the alert David Wilson to rush from his line and steal the ball from midfielder’s feet.

At the other end another neat passage of play saw Ally Park, Andrew and McCann move the ball from the right to the left-hand side of the box where although Gallacher only for the midfielder to be stripped of the ball which was then duly thumped upfield.

Midway through the half the visitors carved out a good chance with a fine move. Liam Rowan played a ball through the middle for Nicky Little to gather and slip quickly to McClair on the right to push into before whipping the ball across the face of the goal but neither the inrushing Little or Lynass could connect.

Bankies then stoutly defended a Glens free-kick and quickly broke upfield with a series of sharp passes that ended with McClair skipping past a defender before Craig Menzies prevented him breaching the box with a strong tackle at the edge of the box. Little snapped up the loose ball to win a corner which was cleared through a diving header by Alan Cairns at the near post.

bb_DSC_2604.JPG

Cammy Marlow with Conor Lynass

The visitors continued to press with Black winning the ball just inside the Glens’ half where he slotted a pass into the box for Jordan Shelvey to chase down where he narrowly won the race to get the first touch on the ball as Wilson rushed off his line to dive at his feet. On 29 minutes Nick Little stepped up to take the spot kick only for the young keeper to get down low and pull off a terrific stop before smothering the loose ball as McClair closed in.

bb_DSC_2755.JPG

David Wilson saves the spot kick

Glens responded with a Mick McCann effort that was well saved by Waters. Another Bankies break followed immediately with Lynass releasing McClair free wide on the right only for Wilson foil him on the bye-line at the expense of a corner which the keeper cleanly clutched.

Glens captain Craig Menzies then got involved up front collecting a ball from McCann on the edge of “D” before slipping past a defender into the box only for his low angled shot from 15 yards finishing inches wide of the post.

Five minutes from the break Gallacher, wide on the left, released Alan Cairns on the overlap to drive to the bye-line and whip a wicked ball into the box for McCann only for Waters show a safe pair hands, securely grabbing the ball under the bar. In the closing action a Glens corner eventually fell to Cammy Marlow in the heart of the “D” only for his delicate chip to drift wide of goal

HT Glens 0 Clydebank 0

Bankies were soon on the front foot with a Lynass effort from outside the box sailing high over the bar and them Shelvey picking out Little at the edge of the box only for Pettigrew to execute a well- timed tackle to avert the danger. Glens responded through McCann and Cairns down the left winning a corner kick that was headed clear by Black.

On 50 minutes the visitors took the lead after Wilson, under pressure from Little, miskicked his attempt to launch the ball upfield and the Bankies’ midfielder snapped up the ball and rolled it perfectly into the path of the incoming Jordan Shelvey to keep his calm and place the ball into the net from 16 yards out.

bb_DSC_2960.JPG

Jordan Shelvey puts the Bankies ahead

The young keeper recovered quickly and from a corner-kick he got down to dave McClair’s close range shot.

A host of substitutions followed with injuries forcing Bankies to replace Chris lack with Ross Alexander and Glens bring on Kyle McAusland for Craig Menzies. The home side made further changes with Dale Moore and Ryan Nisbet replacing Joe Andrew and Lee Gallacher while Bankies later brought on Kyle Munro for Conor Lynass.

bb_DSC_3118

Kyle Munro and Ally Park

Nisbet’s determined run to the bye-line earned the Glens a corner kick which was headed well clear before Moore lofted the ball back deep into the box which Waters leapt high to grab with both hands.

The Bankies came close on 73 minutes triggering a spell of decent chances after McClair’s cross from wide on the right was met square on by the head of Kyle Munro only for the ball to dip inches over the bar. Wilson then pushed a low shot from Michael Bailey round the post before punching away the corner kicked that followed and the loose ball volleyed over the bar.  Following another Bankies break away Munro fashioned a low drilled shot from the right-hand side of the box which Wilson dived to stop and then clutch the loose ball short of the line.

Meanwhile Glens were struggling to get the better of a well-drilled Bankies defence either from open play or set pieces.  Bankies tried to reinforce that position by bringing defender Andy Paterson for the lively Cammy McClair.

Dale Moore sets up last minute chance.

Yet, on the final minute of the regulation time Moore brilliantly killed a ball into the box before thumping a volley from just outside the corner of the six yard box only for the flawless Waters pull off a super block and his defenders combine to clear the loose ball.
