Glenafton started with the same 11 that kicked off against Blantyre Victoria last Wednesday. In the Cumbernauld United goal was trialist Scott McLellan, who had performed so well, again as a trialist, for Blantyre last week and was on Rutherglen Glencairn’s books at the start of the season.

The early exchanges were pretty even with a couple of half chances on show with shots from Calvin Kemp for the visitors which drifted wide and Kieran Boubreki for the host which was easily held by keeper David Markey. Soon after Kemp won Glens a corner kick which was headed clear by Jack Harrison.

On 14 minutes Glens were forced to make a change after Leon Murphy had failed to recover from an earlier knock and was replaced with Sam McKee.

Craig Pettigrew launched a free kick from the centre circle deep into the right-hand side of box for Ollie Rowe to rise and head it back from the goal-line towards the heart of the goalmouth where Hugh Kerr trapped the ball only for his shot from 8 yards to be blocked by Paddy McCabe.

Kerr then headed a high ball into the box for Jordan Ryan to gather before firing a low shot from a tight angle wide of the near post.  Rowe won the ball in the centre circle before threading a forward pass to McKee to burst through the middle and crack a shot from 25 yards that McLellan took the sting out off with both hands.

Cumbernauld came close on 20 minutes after Dale Fulton floated a free kick from wide on the left to the right-hand side of the box where David Cameron leapt to send a looping header high into the air before dropping and bouncing off the top the bar at its junction with the post.

Glens won a free-kick in the centre circle which Jamie McKernon floated into the box and although Rowe won the aerial battle against Stephen McDevitt and Cameron the ball didn’t fall kindly for him and his shot from the edge of the six-yard box flew high over the bar. The visitors continued to press and won another free-kick which McKernon blasted past the wall from 30 yards before McLellan pushed the ball round the post. Rowe then headed McKernon’s corner kick wide of target.

Some respite for the home side after Boubekri released Jay Blair down the right only for his cross into the goalmouth to be intercepted by Pettigrew at the expense of a corner which was cleared.

The visitors then enjoyed another good spell of pressure.

On 30 mins Kemp nicked the ball from the feet of Boubekri to break through the middle before unleashing a shot from 22 yards that whistled wide of the post. Kerr then slotted a great ball into the box for McKee to chase down and clip the ball from the bye-line into the box which was headed clear by McDevitt. McKernon then rifled a shot from 25 yards that McLellan got down low to push past the post. Although Rowe got the better of Cameron in the box his header from the corner looped high over the bar.

Cumbernauld countered with a break through the middle by Boubekri only for Pettigrew to nick the ball at the outskirts of the box and pass to Gilmour who then picked out McKee to break forward before squaring to McKernon who tried his luck from 25 yards only for the ball to take a bounce and the shot sail well over the ball. McKernon then curled a free-kick into the box where Ryan outleapt McDevitt to flash a glancing header over the bar.

Three minutes before the break the hosts won a corner-kick that was mopped and then another break which ended in the same fashion.

Glens countered down the left with Gilmour and McKee with the latter clipping a ball into the six-yard box for Ryan only for McDevitt to intercept and clear to the outskirts of the box where McKernon blasted a shot from 18 yards that whizzed wide of target.

Glens were quickly on the front foot with an early corner kick that glanced off the head of Sean Bennie before falling for Ryan at the back post who rolled it back to Kemp only for his shot to fly over the bar. Ryan and Kemp then combined down the right to set up a cross to the back post for Kerr to outjump two defenders only for the header to drift wide. The visitors continued to press with runs down both flanks with Martin and Gilmour pushing up in support of Kemp & McKee.

On 58 minutes, Bennie on the half-way line broke down a good run by Aaron O’Hare and launched a high ball upfield for Kerr to trap and push forward before drilling a low angled shot from 20 yards that bobbled along the ground and bounced wide of the post.

The hosts then enjoyed a decent spell of possession. Boubekri gathered a shy on the outskirts of the box and evading a pocket of three Glens defenders slipped the ball to Cameron who drilled a low angled shot from the edge of the ‘D’ forcing Markey to get down low and at full stretch push the ball away with a strong hand. The resulting corner-kick came to nothing

Back came Glens and from just inside the Cumbernauld half McKernon clipped a high ball into the right-hand side of the box where Kemp did well to trap it and give Martin Lawrie the slip to get a shot away only for it to dip over the bar.

Just after the hour mark Cumbernauld replaced Jay Blair with Gavin Mackie.

Glens continued to press and Kerr switched play to the left where McKee gave McCabe the slip only for his cross from the bye-line to be headed out by McDevitt and hooked to the edge of the box by Cameron where Kemp snapped up the loose ball before firing a shot over the bar.

The home side countered through O’Hare breaking forward before laying the ball of to Fulton and from fully 35 yards he cracked a shot that thundered off the boards behind the goal.

Midway through the half McKernon struck a sweet free kick from 28 yards that got up and over the four-man wall only for McLellan to pull off a fine save and push the ball away with both hands.

At the other end Lawrie made good progress up the left before curling a ball into a busy box only for for it to drop safely into the arms of Markey.

Back came Glens with McKee down the left skipping past Mackie to get to the bye line and although his cross deflected off a defender Ryan was in place to send an overhead kick across the face of goal where Lawrie managed to guide it out for a corner as Rowe closed in. McKernon’s kick was bulleted goalward by a Bennie header only to be blocked by McDevitt’s head and then headed clear for another corner by Fulton which ended with Pettigrew’s glancing header being held on the line by the keeper.

Cumbernauld countered with their best passage of passing play in the match. The keeper launched a long ball up the park which was gathered by Scott Thomson on the right and with Gilmour blocking his way he rolled the ball back to Mackie who pinged a long ball into the box for Fulton only for Bennie to cut it out with a diving header. Thomson, still on the right touchline, snapped up the ball and again with his way blocked he played a great diagonal ball to Boubekri in the middle of the park who took a touch before stabbing a perfectly weighted pass into the box to march Fulton’s run who was then forced to go wide by McKernon and Bennie but still fashioned an angled shot at goal that was deflected wide for a corner kick. Yet, again the corner came to nothing for the home side. However, they continued to press but without creating a clear-cut chance.

Glens then won a corner of their own but this too was cleared albeit at the third attempt.

Thomson’s determination on the right, on the half -line, saw him shake off a clutch of Glens players before cutting inside before clipping a ball forward for Boubekri only for Bennie to intercept with another header which was gathered by Rowe, quickly bundled off the ball by Thomson who then cracked a shot from 25 yards that was deflected wide by Bennie for a corner. At las, a corner for the home side caused some panic in the Glens box. Mackie’s kick was head flicked on to the far post by Cameron where Harrison hooked the ball back across the face of goal and Fulton’s header for the back post was headed out by Bennie for another corner kick. No panic this time as Gilmour and McKernon cleared their lines.

On 77 minutes Glens pushed forward with Kemp and Ryan combining through the middle. Soon after Ryan was then brought down in the middle of the park. McKernon floated the free kick into the heart of the box and although McDevitt won the ball in the air his header was heading for his own net only for McLellan to move swiftly along his line to get a hand to the ball which hit of the post. Ryan chased the loose ball and rolled it back to Kemp to clip a high ball back toward the back post where Rowe beat McCabe to head it back toward the other r post where Kerr dipped to head the ball over the line and into the net. Joy turned to despair as the assistant referee raised a flag for offside, although McDevitt certainly had played Kerr onside.

Cumbernauld replaced Kieran Boubekri with Tom Neil.

Glens won back-to-back corners with the latter ending with Bennie’s header flying past the post. McKernon then picked out McKee on the left to break into the box and Kerr got on the end of his cross, but his shot was blocked by Harrison. Soon after another McKernon corner was won in the air by Rowe at the back post sending the ball to the near post but clipped the bar in the way down and cleared as Bennie and Kerr were outnumbered by four defenders.

Some respite for United as Fulton picked the ball up in the centre-circle and pushed forward squaring to Mackie on the right who whipped the ball into the box for the incoming Cameron only head the ball wide from 8 yards out.

Glens responded with Gilmour, wide on the left, launching the ball into the goalmouth where McLellan leapt to clutch the ball cleanly under the bar and under pressure from Rowe fell to the ground, still holding the ball tightly.

Martin then picked out Kemp at the right-hand corner of the box, where with his left foot flicked the ball over the head of Lawrie and then met the ball on the drop with his right to lob it to the edge of the six-yard box where Ryan’s header fell into the hands of McLellan.

In the closing minutes of added time Fulton tried his luck from distance but his shot drifted well wide of target and soon after Bennie headed clear a dangerous ball into the box.

Prior to kick a minute’s silence was held in memory of Alan Johnstone who played with Irvine Meadow in the 1972-73 Scottish Junior Cup final against Cambuslang Rangers.

Glenafton made one change from the 11 that started against Beith with Calvin Kemp replacing Sam McKee.

The early exchanges saw the Glens doing most of the pressing with the front pairing of Hugh Kerr and Jordan Ryan showing no ill effect from the hard shift on Saturday as they chased every ball. Meadow racked up three corner-kicks in quick succession as the well marshalled Glens defence repelled each one in turn.

The home side won a free kick in the middle of the park some 28 yards from goal after Ollie Rowe had nicked the ball from the feet of Neil Slooves and skipped past Jared Willet before squaring it to Calvin Kemp who was quickly sandwiched between the chasing Willet and Kinlay Bilham. Jamie McKernon casually stepped up and curled the free kick over the top of the jumping Meadow wall and beyond the reach of airborne keeper Marc Waters before it dipped into the welcoming net as Jambo punched the air in delight!

Glens continued to press. Waters had to rush to the edge of the box and boot the ball clear as Ryan made one of his trade-mark ‘never give-up’ runs in hunting the ball down.  Kemp then evaded another attempted Slooves-Willit sandwich, brushing off the former and pirouetting round the latter, only for his shot from 20 yards to sail over the bar.

On 30 minutes Meadow responded with Jamie Wylie’s long throw into the box which was headed on by Whyte and picked up by Willet who was quickly dispossessed by Sean Bennie to set up a counter attack that ended with a Glens corner. McKernon picked out Rowe at the edge of the six-yard box and his powerful downward header bounced inches wide of the post.

A minute later Gilmour’s long throw into the six yard saw the ball pop out of a posse of players where Rowe was first to curl a shot through said posse and although it beat the keeper it slipped past the junction of post and bar.

Play then raged back and forth for a period without either keeper being tested before McKernon launched a long high ball upfield for Kerr to chase down with Whyte for company and with the Glens man looking favourite to win, Waters raced from his line and in attempting to clear the ball he floored the Glens man in the box with a high boot. Incredibly play was allowed to continue and Waters & Whyte ushered the ball out the box before Rowe headed it back and the ball eventually went out for Meadow throw. A reckless tackle!

To rub salt in the wound Meadow went up the park and won a debatable free kick on the left-hand side of the Glens’ half.  Willet floated the ball deep into the box where a great leap from Whyte sent the ball high into the air to the left-hand side of the box and another great leap, by Connor Boyd, sent the ball over the head of keeper David Markey at the near post seemingly net-bound at the back post only for Pettigrew’s attempt to hook it clear crash off the under-side of the bar leaving Callum Graham with a tap in from a yard out. Glens 1 Meadow 1, on 37 minutes.

Both sides pushed to get their noses in front before the break with the home side creating the best of the chances. Kerr got the jump on two defenders to gather the ball in the ‘D’ sending it high in the air with his right and then meeting it on the drop with his left, only for the outrushing keeper to get a hand to it and Wylie boot the loose ball clear.

On the stroke of half-time Glens came close to regaining the lead after winning a shy down the left, a few yards from the bye-line. Kerr on the edge of the 18 yard box quickly returned the throw to Gilmour who then clipped the ball to the far side of the box where Rowe headed it back to the far side of the six yard box for Kerr to burst between Findlay and Lyle and bullet a header off the ground that somehow Waters managed to get down and pull off a great save only for the ball it to fall for Jordan Ryan but his shot from 3 yards deflected off Wylie and into the arms of the grounded keeper.

Meadow broke upfield when Graham won a corner kick which Bennie headed clear as the half-time whistle blew.

HT Glens 1 Meadow 1

Both keepers had dealt comfortably with crosses into the box before Glens mounted another attack after Bennie had intercepted a Meadow clearance on his chest in the centre circle. From here he slipped the ball to McKernon who slotted a perfectly weighted pass forward for Kerr to gather and turn Whyte one way then the other before threading the ball to Ryan on the edge of the box to drive into the right hand-side of the box where his cut-back was deflected wide by Findlay for a corner. Murphy floated the kick into the six-yard box where Waters and Rowe leapt together only for the keeper to get a finger to touch it wide off the back post. McKernon took the kick from left launching it high to the back of the six-yard box where Pettigrew’s weighted downward header fell for Ollie Rowe to soft-shoe shuffle the ball over the line from 2 yards out. Graham’s appeal that he had been pushed in the box were waved away. Glens 2-1 up on 52 minutes.

The tempo of the game remained high with play going from end to end and Glens looking dangerous on the break while Meadow’s long throws into the box were defended well by the home defence. On one occasion Gilmour won the header at the back post and Pettigrew gathered before arrowing an outrageous long ball up the left wing for some 60 yards or so for Ryan to chase down, only for Findlay to block his way to goal.

Meadow brought on Logan Angus for Kinlay Bilham.

The visitors won back-to-back corner kicks again however without testing the keeper as play continued to ebb from end to end.

Midway through the half Kemp weaved his way down the right flank and with some assistance from Ryan before he curled the ball into the box for Murphy only for Lyle to intercept but his header fell for Kerr in the ‘D’, to take a touch and lash a low drive that drifted wide of the post.

Two minutes later Meadow cleared the ball only as far as the centre circle where Rowe powered a high looping header to the outskirts of the box for Kerr to trap the ball and before Findlay and Lyle could close him down, he lashed a ferocious volley that beat Waters on his six-yard line only for the ball to dip over the bar.

The game was still very much in the balance and although Glens looked dangerous on the break while Meadow passed up a good chance when a cross from the left saw Slooves head the ball back towards the near post for the inrushing Graham only for the alert Markey to get down low to grab the ball from his feet.

Meadow made another changes Connor Boyd making way for Conor MacDonald.

At the other end Kemp & Kerr combined deep on the right wing and if the sun hadn’t gone down Wylie and Whyte would have been chasing shadows as the Glens pair toyed with them before Kemp curled a ball to Ryan at the corner of six-yard box who rolled it back out to Kerr to drill a low shot that was deflected wide leading to back-to-back corners that were well defended by the visitors.

With 10 minutes to go Kemp made another powerful run down the right, skipping past players at will to cut into the right-hand corner of the box before drilling a low shot that Waters held safely.

A few minutes later Glens brought on Ryan Nisbet for Jordan Ryan who left the pitch to loud applause after another outstanding shift while Meadow replaced Jamie Wylie with Jacob Long.

James Martin played a one-two with Kemp wide on the right before clipping a ball into the box for Kerr who although lost his marker could only guide the ball wide of target.  Soon after Murphy broke down the left before whipping a dangerous ball into the goalmouth that Waters plucked out the air.

At the other end a Meadow corner was cleared after some head tennis from Gilmour and Bennie.  The visitors continued to press as Waters launched a long ball into the box which although Whyte won the aerial battle McKernon cleared it at the near post to prevent Jamie Martin aving a shot at goal. Back came Meadow but there was no way through as a determined Glens held on for three points.

Glenafton made one change from the 11 that started at Largs on Wednesday evening with Mark Gilmour coming in for the suspended Calvin Kemp.

The home side got off to a lively start with a couple of free kicks into the box, the first of which ended with Ollie Rowe’s header sailing over the bar and the second saw Hugh Kerr come within a whisker of getting an outstretched leg to the ball in front of goal.  From open play Jordan Ryan burst into the box and his angled shot pulled off a good save from keeper Aidan Winning before spotting the offside flag. Soon after, Kerr killed the ball before picking out Leon Murphy on the edge of the box with a peach of a pass and after taking a touch his low drilled shot was stopped on the six yard line by the sole of Winning’s boot.

The visitors had fashioned some decent breaks particularly on the left wing through Del Hepburn albeit without leading to any shots on target. However, on 17 minutes Hepburn intercepted a Glens clearance in the centre circle where he clipped a great ball forward for Josh Fowler to chase down and after bursting between two defenders, he let the ball take a bounce just inside the box before lobbing a perfectly weighted ball over keeper David Markey on the six-yard line and into the net. An exquisite finish and back-to-back goals against the Glens for the young striker.

Glens responded well and Ryan’s runs were keeping the Beith defence on their toes, one of which ended with Winning taking a knock to his head after bravely diving at the striker’s feet to grab the ball. Jamie McKernon floated a corner-kick into a packed six-yard box and it was Sean Bennie that won the aerial battle only for his header to drift wide of the back post.

Back came Beith, building from the back, with Jay McKay spraying passes as they pushed forward but the end product fell short. Similarly, two corner-kicks came and went without testing Markey.

Glens also struggled and their counter-attacks tended to fizzle out before any clear-cut chances were created. However, that all changed on 38 minutes when the home side got back on level terms.

Mark Gilmour, from deep and wide on the left, launched a high ball into the Beith box where Kerr, on the penalty spot and sandwiched between two defenders leapt for the ball only for Winning to rush from his line and although he got to the ball, it rolled out of his outstretched arms and onto the ground. Sam McKee managed to gain control of the ball and took a step to the side before lashing a shot from 10 yards out that was beyond the reach of the keeper’s outstretched arm and whizzed past Steven Noble in the six-yard box and into the gaping net.

The visitors were immediately on the front foot through McKay releasing Dean McBride to drive down the right where Gilmour cut out his cross. The corner kick that followed fell for Calum Watt to hook a first time shot that was blocked in a busy six-yard box.  Another break down the right saw the ball played inside for Fowler only for Craig Pettigrew to intercept and clear the danger. Soon after Hepburn from the left whipped a ball to the back post which was clutched cleanly by Markey as Kevin Watt threatened.

The keeper then launched the ball high upfield where Ryan leapt from between Noble and McGlinchley to head flick the ball on for Kerr. While Noble stopped to appealfor offside, McGlinchey gave chase as Kerr broke into the box where from 12 yards out he clipped the ball over the head of the advancing keeper and into the empty net to put the Glens in front on 44 minutes.

HT Glens 2 Beith 1

The visitors made a change at the break with Lewis Barclay making way for Jason Duffy.

Winning and Markey comfortably saved early half chances from a Ryan header and a Kevin Watt shot respectively before the Glens doubled their lead on 51 minutes.

Murphy on the left played the ball inside to McKee who then slipped it to Ryan on the right-hand corner of the box to thump a low angled shot that Winning did well to get down low to block and Noble cleared the loose ball. Glens quickly recovered the ball tight on the right touchline where McKee and Kerr played a one-two before the former lobbed the ball back into the busy box where Ryan back-heeled the ball high into the air and on its descent Rowe, with his back to goal and two defenders for company, killed the ball on his chest and as it dropped swivelled to strike an unstoppable shot into the net from 8 yards out. A stunning strike for his ninth goal of the season.

Two minutes later however the Mighty halved the deficit. Kevin Watt broke into the right-hand side of box but with Bennie in close attention he was forced to retreat and roll the ball back to Frize on the outskirts of the “D” who quickly clipped it to Hepburn at the left hand corner of the box. From here he cut inside, taking two Glens players out of play, before squaring the ball to Frize who met it first time and leathered a cracking shot through a ruck of players into corner of the net from 22 yards out.

The visitors’ tails were up and they pegged the Glens deep into their own for a good ten-minute spell. A Hepburn corner was headed clear by McKernon at the near post and soon after Markey snatched the ball from the feet of Fowler at the same time. During this period full back Dean McBride suffered a bad knock and was clearly in some distress and was replaced by striker Andy Reid.

Some respite for the Glens through Murphy breaking up the left where he won a throw which Gilmour launched to the corner of the six-yard box for Kerr to head on and although Ryan got a touch the keeper was quick off his line to gather the loose ball.

At the other end McKay, from wide on the right, whipped a ball to the back post and although James Martin got his head to it Duffy got his head to the clearance send in the ball high and wide of target.

Ryan then chased down a ball in the Beith box with Calum Watt and Nobel in attendance. He gave the former the slip and then survived a push from the latter before being booked for diving after McKay’s tackle.

Defences remained on top for long spells as play raged from end to end. Although Beith appeared to have the lion’s share of possession with their methodical build up play the Glens seemed to have the better of the half chances.

On 75 minutes McKernon from the centre circle floated a free-kick into the left-hand side of the box where Rowe rose unchallenged to head it high into the six-yard box where Winning punched it clear from the head of Ryan only for it to fall for Kerr to swivel and lash a shot over the bar from 10 yards out.  Soon after Ryan’s cross into the box was headed clear by Noble as far at the “D” where Rowe met it on the drop only for his shot to be headed clear by Noble again.

Beith then pressed for a spell and although Reid intercepted a clearance by Markey on the bye-line before cutting the ball across the face of the empty goal there with no team-mates in the danger area and Gilmour mopped up the danger.

Kerr then cut out a McKay pass in the centre circle and slipped the ball to McKernon before breaking into the box along-side Ryan and it was the latter that picked up the forward pass from McKernon but his cut-back into the six-yard box drifted high over the bar and he pulled up quickly in some pain.

Beith countered through McKay picking out Kevin Watt on the outskirts of the box and with way forward blocked by Pettigrew he slipped the ball wide for the incoming Duffy to fire a shot from the 18-yard line which Markey cleanly clutched under the bar

On 83 minutes the game was up for Jordan Ryan having chased down every ball sent his way and was forced to limp off with Ryan Nisbet taking his place.

A minute later Beith came within a whisker of drawing level. Kevin Watt picked up a pass from Hepburn and from the right-hand corner of the six-yard box turned to whip a ball to the back post where Fowler and Reid were placed but the latter’s attempt to force the ball over the line was blocked by Bennie sending the ball dipping over the bar. Fowler and Reid held their heads in their hands while Bennie puffed out his cheeks before exhaling his sense of relief! The corner that followed in comparison proved to be an anti-climax as Markey grabbed the ball unchallenged.

At the other end Nisbet won a corner-kick that was headed clear by McGlinchey only to be recovered by McKee who played a couple of one-two’s with McKernon to release Murphy down the left to win another corner which was headed over the bar by Kerr.

Beith responded through a mazy run by McKay wide the right giving two Glens players the slip before cutting inside and clipping the ball into the six yard box but again there were no takers other than Markey’s bread-basket.

In the last minute of regulation time Frize curled a ball to the back post for the incoming Fowler only for Bennie to head out of play for a corner and it was Bennie that headed that clear from the same post. Frize recovered the ball only to be robbed by Rowe albeit at the expense of another corner which McGlinchey headed high into the air and Markey, surrounded by 3 players from each side, kept his cool to welcome the dropping ball into his hands.  Beith continued to press and Callum Watt clipped a ball into the box for Fowler but again Benne headed clear only for it to be returned for him to win another header before the Glens gained control of the ball after McKay’s foul on Kerr on defensive duties.

Glens took full advantage of the break and won back-to-back throw-ins down the left only yards from the corner flag. Frustration then set in as feet were taken from Murphy but there was no time to take the free kick as the referee’s whistle brought proceedings to an end on 93 minutes.

Glenafton made one change to the eleven that started against Auchinleck on Saturday with goalkeeper David Markey returning from suspension and coming in for James Martin. While in the Largs line-up was former Glens striker Scot Adam.

After a goal-less first half it was striker Will Sewell that broke the deadlock on 50 minutes curling a fine shot from 15 yards beyond the reach of keeper Markey. Thistle doubled their lead on 65 minutes after Markey pulled off a fine save from Adam’s close range shot only for Stuart Faulds pounce on the loose ball and slam it home from 6 yards out. In the closing minutes Glens striker Calvin Kemp was sent off after collecting a second yellow card.

Glenafton made four changes to the side that started against Kilwinning last Saturday. In came James Hart, Craig Pettigrew, Ollie Rowe and Hugh Kerr for David Markey, Ross Fisher, Darren Curtis and Aaaron Miller. While former Glenafton midfielder Michael Wardrope started for Auchinleck.

In a tight and competitive local derby both sides had decent chances to break the deadlock in what eneded as a goal-less first half. The best chance for the Glens came from a corner kick on 33 minutes only for keeper Andy Leishman to pull of a fine save from the head of former Talbot player Calvin Kemp and with Jordan Ryan’s attempt to bury the loose ball hitting the side-netting. The visitors were denied a half-time lead after keeper James Hart tipped a low shot from Keir Samson round the post.

The second half followed a similar pattern with very little between the sides. Glens came close to breaking the deadlock only for Leishman to pull off great from a couple of headers from striker Hugh Kerr. As the match drew to a close Keir Samson passed up a chance to put the visitors on 82 minutes only for his free header from close range to drift wide of target. However, with two minutes to go Gareth Armstrong’s deflected low drive from the edge of the box found the net to put Talbot ahead. Try as they might the home side fell short of salvaging point in added time.

Jordan Stuart drew the visitors level on 55 minutes before Ricky Hanvey put the Buffs ahead on 63 minutes. Glenafton made two changes to the eleven that started in the cup tie away to East Kilbride Thistle last Saturday with Sean Bennie and Calum Thomson making way for David Blyth and Calvin Kemp. There were also a couple of formation changes with James Martin dropping back to right wing back and Jamie McKernon pairing up with Craig Pettigrew at the centre of defence. While up front there was a strike force of Hugh Kerr, Calvin Kemp and Sam McKee.

Meanwhile in the Clydebank dug-out were former Glenafton players Lee Gallacher and Bankies’ manager Gordon Moffat.

Although the home side kicked-off in the blazing sunshine accompanied with a swirling wind it was the visitors that were first to show with an early corner kick which Leon Murphy floated the ball into the heart of the six-yard box only to be punched clear by keeper Jamie Donnelly.

Clydebank countered with Nicky Little’s low angled shot from inside the box which was deflected wide for a corner. This was played short and after a couple of slick one-twos the ball fell for Kevin Green to get a shot away from 12 yards out that bounced off the surface and seemed to be net-bound only for David Markey to get down low at full stretch to finger-tip the ball round the post.

Dave Markey saves from Kevin Green

The corner that followed was headed clear at the near post by McKernon only to be recovered by Chris Black to drive it across the face of goal where James Martin did enough to prevent Ciaran Mulcahy get a tap in at the back post. Back came Bankies and after some head tennis in the box the ball landed at the feet of Little to drill his shot into the ground sending the ball into the air and falling kindly into the safe hands of Markey.

Play continued to ebb back and forth peppered with free kicks and with defences on top there were few clear-cut chances on show.

On 20 minutes McKernon lashed a free kick from 35 yards that whistled inches wide of the post sparking a good spell for the visitors. Murphy then won Glens another corner that McKernon floated to the far corner of the six-yard box where Ollie Rowe’s header was deflected for another corner which was cleared by Little.

Ollie Rowe wins the aerial battle

The home side were forced to make a change on 27 minutes with Lee Gallacher replacing the injured Hamish McKinlay.

Glens continued to press and Kerr’s break down the left ended with a clatter from Darroch and Murphy curled a free kick deep into the box where Rowe’s header sailed high over the bar.

Soon after another Murphy free-kick from the left was headed out for a throw on the right by Matt Niven that was quickly dispatched to Craig Pettigrew to whip the ball back into the box for McKee who skipped past Green only for his pass to Kerr to be cut out by Niven again. Back came Glens through McKee down the left giving Green the slip again and on this occasion his pass found Kerr deep in the box and with Darroch at his back the striker swivelled to get a shot away that Donnelly safely smothered.

David Blyth on the all with Ollie Rowe and Nicky Little

The home side rallied in the closing five minutes. Gallacher from tight on the right floated a free kick deep into the box that Markey leapt unchallenged to clutch cleanly.  Darroch’s free kick from the centre circle into the box was headed goalward by Mulcahy only to be headed clear by Pettigrew. The ball was quickly recovered by Bankies and played to the edge of the box where Little’s shot, under pressure from Pettigrew, was mopped up by Markey.  In the final action of the half another Darroch free kick into the box saw Rowe rise head and shoulders above Slattery and Mulcahy to send the ball to safety.

HT Bankies 0 Glens 0

Bankies brought on striker Ross McPherson for Liam McGonigle at the break. Calvin Kemp kicked off the second half and two minutes later he was brought down in the box after a great move down the left by the visitors. McKee picked up the ball in the centre circle and played a one-two with Murphy to progress down the left to the corner of the penalty box where Black and Slattery closed him down. Murphy burst down the flank on the overlap taking Black with him while McKee dipped inside Slattery to clip a ball into the box where Kemp emerged from a Little & Darroch sandwich with the ball forcing keeper Donnelly to rush out the six-yard box and send the Glens striker with the ball at crashing to the ground.

Up stepped Jamie McKernon to fire the spot kick to the keeper’s right only for Donnelly to save and seemingly keep the scores level before the assistant referee’s flag signalled a re-take for the keeper coming off his line.

Penalty duties were transferred to Leon Murphy and in a flash, he sent the keeper the wrong way to put the Glens 1-0 up on 49 minutes.

Despite the scorching heat the game still raged back and forth and was still peppered with niggling free-kicks.

McHugh down the left whipped a great ball into the box which Markey welcomed into his arms as McPherson threatened.  Blyth then pushed through the middle for the Glens but was robbed of the ball by Little in the centre circle and the loose ball was recovered by McHugh to slip it forward to Slattery but by the time he had progressed to edge of the box Blyth had burst a lung to chase him down, win the ball back and pick out Kerr upfield; a fine example of the work-rate throughout the Glens side.

Hugh Kerr and Jamie Darroch

Indeed, Glens began to get on top for a spell with the best form of defence being attack.  However, on the hour mark the game was up for Calvin Kemp having failed to recover from a couple of knocks and he was replaced with Ryan Nisbet.

Bankies enjoyed a decent spell of pressure without getting the better of the Glens defence from open play while Markey’s flawless handling of a number of set-pieces floated deep into the box was proving a source of frustration for the home side. Midway through the half the keeper then blocked a fierce low angled shot with his feet after a great run into the box by Mulcahy.

Glens responded through McKee picking out Nisbet to beat the offside trap and show Niven a clean pair of heels before lashing a shot from 22 yards that Donnelly leapt to push over the bar with both hands. The keeper then clutched the corner kick from the head of Rowe.

Ryan Nisbet shot from 22 yards tipped over the bar

On 70 minutes Bankies replaces Oision McHugh with Kyle Munro while Glens brought on Ross Fisher for David Blyth.

A couple of corners in quick succession for the Bankies saw the first comfortably gathered by Markey while the second saw Darroch’s header whizz through a packed six-yard box and appeared to bounce off the inside of the back post before the loose ball was hooked clear by Pettigrew.

Glens countered through Murphy gathering the ball on the outskirts of the Glens box and pushing forward to the centre circle before picking out Nisbet with a peach of pass to hare upfield and giving Munro the slip before firing from 15 yards out only for his shot to curl wide of the post.

On 78 minutes Glens made their final change with Aaron Miller coming on for Alan Cairns who had put in a tremendous shift and suffered one knock too many to limp off.

Darroch got on the end of Gallacher’s corner kick but headed the ball over the bar under pressure from Rowe.

Markey launched a long ball down the left for Nisbet to chase and with Niven closing him down at the corner of the box he opted to lob the advancing keeper but the ball bounced wide of target. Fisher’s clearance from Gallacher was mishit by Darroch in the centre-circle and Nisbet switched on the after-burners to break down the right only for his attempt to square the ball for Kerr to be intercepted by the keeper.

Bankies made a sustained push in the closing five minutes pegging the Glens back as they went in search of a late equaliser and came close to finding it two minutes from time. Gallacher teed up McPherson on the edge of the box but his low shot was deflected wide. McPherson then head-flicked on Gallacher’s corner kick from the near side corner of the six yard and from 8 yards out Mulcahy’s powerful header that looked net-bound only for Markey to make a stunning reflex save and push the ball over the bar with an outstretched arm. This corner was scrambled clear and recovered by Black to burst down the right and whip the ball deep into the box where Niven’s header fell into the hands of Markey.

David Markey pushes Ciaran Mulcahy’s heder over the bar

In the last minute of regulation time Markey launched the ball high upfield where Kerr, with Green at his back, got a touch to deflect it into the path of Sam McKee. The young striker burst upfield unimpeded into the box where he took a clever touch to avoid the incoming sliding tackle from the back-tracking Darroch before guiding the ball into the net beyond the reach of the advancing Donnelly. The goal celebrations were subdued slightly as cramp kicked in.

Back to winning ways in the league with a Pl7 W5 D1 L1 in their last seven games.

Glenafton made a number of changes to the eleven that started against Rutherglen Glencairn last Saturday with Calum Thomson, James Martin, Jamie McKernon and Hugh Kerr replacing Ross Fisher (injured), David Blyth, Mark Gilmour and Calvin Kemp. Also on the bench from Glenafton was goalkeeper Scott Johnston returning after being out injured.

In the East Kilbride dug-out was former Glenafton striker Aaron Connolly but unfortunately was out through injury.

East Kilbride kicked off and played the ball upfield which was quickly returned to their half where Sam McKee and Hugh Kerr combined to set up before the latter curled a ball into the box for the inrushing James Martin only for his header o whizz wide of the post.

The game got bogged down for spells as play was peppered with petty fouls along with loud shouts of ‘he’s aff ref’ as the lonely referee had no supporting assistants (linesmen).

However, the home side had some decent half chances in the opening 15 minutes. Andrew Skinner burst down the left and although his low cross into the goalmouth was blocked, he recovered the ball and floated it to the back post for the incoming Evan Duffy only for keeper David Markey to clutch it cleanly.

On 11 minutes a long clearance up the park by the Glens was smartly mopped up by the EK defence and the ball gathered by David McKean in the centre circle to play a long superb pass upfield to the right-hand-side of the penalty box for Duffy to instantly dispatch it to the heart of the goal mouth but just inches beyond the reach of the incoming Skinner. However, the home side, as they say recycled the ball brilliantly with a string of passes to set up Adam Edgar deep in the box, only for his shot from a tight angle to bulge the side-netting.

Glens began to get the upper hand in terms of possession and James Martin’s runs were keeping the EK defence on their toes. On 14 minutes he intercepted a clearance from the corner flag and from the right flank cut inside along the 18-yard line skipping past defenders at will before cracking a shot from the ‘D’ that flew wide of the post.  The visitors won a couple of corners that were well defended before Martin cut inside from the right again and on this occasion keeper Harry Purves comfortably held his shot from 20 yards.

James Martin on the ball

Glenafton broke the deadlock on 30 minutes. Another Glens corner-kick was cleared with a long high ball upfield for Skinner to chase only for Alan Cairns to intercept with a header that was gathered at the left hand-side of the centre circle by Martin who twisted and turned to shake off a defender. The midfielder then switched the ball to Jamie McKernon on the right who took another defender out of play before slipping the ball into the box for Sam McKee to give yet another defender the slip before driving to the bye-line and cutting the ball back into a busy six-yard box where although the keeper got a hand to it, the ball fell for Leon Murphy to fire home from 5 yards out.

Glens continued to press and on 37 minutes doubled their lead. Calum Thomson launched a long ball down the right where Kerr won the aerial battle with Cole McIntrye before Sam McKee snapped up the loose ball and after giving McKean the slip he rolled a perfectly weighted pass to Leon Murphy, free on the 18 yard line, to break into the box and from 10 yards out clip the ball beyond the reach of the advancing keeper into the far corner of the goal. Despite protestations (either about Kerr’s challenge or a possible off-side?), the goal stood.

Three minutes later Markey launched a goal kick high upfield where Kerr trapped the ball on his thigh before cutting inside and unleashing a low shot from 30 yards that keeper Purves did well to get down low and push wide for a corner. Murphy floated the corner kick into heart of the six-yard box which by-passed attackers and defenders and fell for McKee at the back post where his shot was deflected by Ross McLellan sending it high in the air back toward Murphy wide on the right of the penalty box who side-stepped Alexander McDonald before clipping a glorious ball to the back post where Ollie Rowe outjumped Paul Smith to send a header past the keeper from 3 yards out. Glens 3-0 up on 41 minutes.

In the closing action of the half Stephen White earned a free kick on the bye-line five yards from the 18 yard box. The ‘short-corner’ however was over-hit and the chance gone leaving a shell-shocked Thistle to go in at the break having conceded three goals in an 11 minute spell.

HT East Kilbride 0 Glens 3

Glenafton made one change at the break with Calvin Kemp coming on for Sam McKee and he was soon off the mark extending the visitors lead on 48 minutes. McKernon released Murphy down the left who jinked past White before slipping the ball to Cairns in the box only for the back tracking White to nick the ball from his feet sending the Glens defender stumbling to the ground. However, Matthew Gray’s attempt to clear the ball saw Cairns, still on knees, nod the ball down into the path of Kerr who swivelled and whipped the ball between two defenders to pick out Kemp on the six yard line to turn and slam the ball home with the keeper stranded at the post and McLellan closing in.

The visitors made a change with Ollie Rowe making way for Aaron Miller.

On 50 minutes Thistle pulled one back after Skinner was impeded at the edge of the box. Smith curled a cracking free-kick over the wall only for the ball to smack off the bar and the alert Skinner to pounce and slot the ball past Markey and into the net.

Incredibly the Glens restored their four-goal cushion a minute later. Gray’s upfield clearance from the bye-line was cut-out by Cairns and played into the path of Kemp who turned before lashing an unstoppable shot from 22 yards. Glens 5-1 up in 51 minutes.

Glens continued to press with captain Craig Pettigrew initiating a number of the breaks, pinging long passes from the heart of the defence. On 54 minutes  Kemp threaded a great ball through for Kerr to chase down in the box only for Purves to rush from his line and deflect the striker’s shot from the penalty spot wide of the post. The corner-kick ignited a good old stramash in the six-yard box with Miller’s shot blocked by McLellan and Kemp’s attempt to bury the rebound battered off the post. The visitors recovered the ball and it eventually fell for McKernon on the left-hand side of the box to curl a shot that beat Purves but slipped past the far post.

Aaron Miller’s shot is blocked

On the hour mark Thistle brought on Dean Fitzpatrick for Alexander McDonald.

Soon after a great through ball from White saw Skinner chase it down in the box only for Markey to block his shot with an outstretched leg and then push away Adam Edgar’s attempt to bury the rebound before Thomson mopped up the loose ball.

Thistle made a further change with Kyle Kidd coming on for Evan Duffy.

Kerr had another lung-bursting run into the box chased by Gray and claims he had been pulled back wee away. Later he showed the defender a clean pair of heels as the broke forward to edge of the box before blasting a ball that dipped over the bar.

Play then flowed from end to end but with defences on top clear cut chances were thin on the ground with the best of those falling to the Glens.  On 82 minutes Murphy curled a corner to the far corner of the six yard box where Pettigrew towered above two defenders to bullet a seemingly net-bound header only for White to head it off the line with the keeper beaten. The loose ball fell for Bennie and his powerful shot smacked the brave White full on the chest and Kemp’s attempt was then held by the keeper.

Craig Pettigrew’s header will be cleared off the line

Glens made their final change with Jamie McKernon, after a great shift, made way for Darren Curtis.

Kemp switched play from eft to right where Kerr held off White to fashion a low angled shot from 10 yards that Purves did well to block with his feet.

Thistle then enjoyed a spell of pressure in the closing minutes winning a corner-kick that was eventually scrambled cleared in a busy box. Soon after the tireless Skinner whipped the ball across the face of goal only for Bennie to block Edgar’s effort and Cairns to clear the ball from Kidd.

However, it was Glenafton that had the final say on 89 minutes. Martin from tight on the right clipped the ball into the box for incoming Kemp to meet it on the bounce and lob it over keeper’s head to complete his hat-trick and the scoring.

The final whistle soon after the Glens celebrations had concluded and the New Cumnock progressed to the 3rd round of the Killie Pie Cuo.

Glenafton made one change to the 11 that started against Beith last week with striker Calvin Kemp making his Glens debut coming in for the unavailable Hugh Kerr. Meanwhile on the bench for Rutherglen was former Afton striker Kit Cummins.

Glenafton’s unbeaten run of 4 wins and 1 draw came to an end through two second half goals from Rutherglen.

There were few chances in the first half the best of which fell to the visitors when Ross Fisher’s header from a Leon Murphy corner-kick whizzed inches wide of the post.

The visitors broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart. Although their strong appeals for a spot kick after Sean Bennie’s tackle on the left hand-side of the penalty box were waved away the free-kick that ensued was squared into the box where Harry Mitchell clipped a low shot towards goal and despite it lacking the power to bother David Markey a deflection off Ross Fisher put the ball the keeper’s reach and into the net.

The home side came with a whisker of drawing level after free-kick was floated into the goal mouth only to be cleared to the outskirts of the box where it was gathered by David Blyth and after giving a defender the slip cracked a left-footed shot that bounced off the base of the post.

Glencairn passed up a good chance when a good cross into the box ended with a close-range header flying high over the ball and soon after defensive header was sent flying high into the air ad was met on drop by Calvin Kemp only for his shot from 18 yards to dip over the bar.

On 75 minutes Glencairn double their lead. A great cross from tight on the right wing to the far post was headed back into the six yard box where substitute Reece Pearson coolly headed home

The remaining half-chances for both sides came and went as Rutherglen ran out 2-0 winners.
