GIRVAN 1 (0)

Glenafton unravelled a string of three home league draws in a row with a scintillating second half display that had Girvan tied in knots. The Seasiders were left beached as the home side netted three goals in a ten minute spell and left Loch Park with only a late consolation.

Overcast conditions at kick-off with rain threatening did little to dampen the aspirations of both sides to play open and attacking football which in turn yielded several chances at both ends. Ian Cashmore revelled in facing his former side and almost set up the opener for the Glens in four minutes when his cross from the left to the back post was partially cleared by Alan Love. In raced Craig Potter to smash the ball on the drop from 8 yards out only for Darren Johnson to stretch and pull off a stunning save and then to partner Nicky Faulds in preventing Potter heading home the rebound.

Three minutes later the visitors moved the ball from box to box with a slick passing move that saw the impressive Neil Gilmour pick out Sean McKenna who then rolled the ball into the path of Lee McCrae and the midfielder’s fierce shot from the corner of the penalty box whizzed over Ally Semple’s bar.

At the other end the Glens forced a series of corners the best of which saw Cashmore dive low at the edge of the six yard box but his flashing header was blocked at the near post by former Glenafton player Scott McQuade.  Good runs by  Cashmore and then McKenzie ended disappointingly for the home side with Johnson not being tested. The same could be said for visitors McKenna and McCrae their finishing not matching their eye-catching build up play.

On the half hour mark with the drizzle now coating the playing surface tempers began to get the better of both sides. Cashmore was the victim of a couple of crunching tackles which although earned the home side free-kicks, the perpetrators went unpunished. Five minutes later Glens captain Robbie Henderson the purveyor of an equally robust tackle was shown yellow and the official’s apparent lack of consistency not appreciated by the vocal home support.

The game entered a scrappy spell as the previous fluency fizzled out but in the dying minutes of the half the visitors came close to severing the stalemate. Richie McKillen outjumped Gilmour at the back post to head clear and from the resultant corner, also to the back post, Craig Menzies headed clear as McKenna looked certain to head home the opener. Light drizzle had now become heavy horizontal drizzle and with it thoughts that the game could reach the same dizzy heights of the opening twenty minutes or so were in danger of being washed away. Thankfully, Paul McKenzie had other ideas and the magical midfielder took the game by the scruff of the neck. Skipping past McQuade on the half-way line he exploded down the left flank, played an exquisite one-two with Cashmore on his way to the dead ball line, cut back and fired the ball across the goal mouth only for it to be scrambled cleared by Scott McGilp, the ball eventually falling to Lewis Sloan but his effort sailed high over the bar.

At the other end Menzies was injured as the Glens eventually scrambled cleared a Girvan attack and minutes later his replacement Ryan McChesney beat Stuart Peacock in the air but his header looped inches over the bar much to the relief of Johnston at full stretch.

On 58 minutes McKenzie picked up a Gareth Armstrong header at the edge of the box but with his way to goal blocked wheeled around to feed Craig McEwan who launched the ball to the back post where  Paul Murphy and Gareth Armstrong were lurking with intent. The former won the header and the latter beat keeper Darren Johnston in the race to retrieve the loose ball and hook it back into the net from the six yard line.

Gareth Armstrong opens the scoring

Two minutes later another ball to the back post, Cashmore the provider,  allowed Armstrong to return the favour and beat Johnston to the ball and Paul Murphy to head it home from four yards.

Paul Murphy heads home for 2-0

The home side’s tails were up and McKenzie was running the visitors ragged and as he skipped passed one after another he played a deft one-two with Armstrong as he entered the box and pulled back the right foot to let fly only to be bundled to the deck. No penalty and as play raged on the ball was recovered by the Glens and a Murphy header, ironically from the penalty post, zipped past the post with Johnston rooted to his goal line.

On 67 minutes Sloan was brought down by McGilp some 30 yards or so from goal. Too far for a shot a goal the free kick was played into the box where substitute Gareth Campbell with his back to goal rose to beat McQuade and send the ball skywards and looping over  Johnston at full stretch.

Darren Johnston can't stop Gareth's goal

Gutted Girvan to their credit kept their cool and on 73 minutes a number of their arms were raised aloft in appeal as the Glens scrambled clear a free kick in a packed area, but again the official witnessed nothing to warrant a penalty.  Similarly, ten minutes later in the other box, Potter’s claim for a spot kick after a Kyle Faulds challenge were waved away.

The visitors’ consolation came with two minutes to go as Alan Love weaved his way through a busy penalty box and played a clever one-two with Stuart Wilson before guiding the ball home from close range.

Other league scores: Cumbernauld 3 Lanark 2; Dalry v Thorniewood (Abandoned ); Kilsyth 1 Whitletts 2;  Shotts 0 Rutherglen 2

With Ardrossan Winton Rovers on Scottish Junior Cup duty the well deserved victory takes unbeaten Glenafton to top of the league.

Steven Greenlees signs for Hurlford

Steven Greenlees in action at Hurlford

Glenafton defender Steven Greenlees has signed for Super League 1st Division side Hurlford United. Steven was former manager Greg Denham’s first signing for Glenafton when he joined the club in September 2010, initially on a loan deal from Albion Rovers before a permanent move was concluded. He made 25 starts that season and scored two goals, both coming in a 6-3 league win at Bellshill. This season Steven has made 3 starts and a handful appearances from the bench, including one in the recent league win over Hurlford at Blair Park. The club would like to thank Steven and wish him all the best for the future.

According to the Pollok web-site former Glenafton player Stephen Docherty has returned to Pollok to take up a coaching role, following the recent departure of Jimmy McQuade.

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC v GIRVAN

Gareth Campbell and Nikki Smith

Weather permitting Glenafton will host Girvan in a league match at Loch Park this Saturday. The Seasiders are the only side to have beaten the Glens so far this season when the two sides met in the Ardagh Glass Sectional League Quarter-Final.  Stevie O’Donnell had put the visitors ahead after only 4 minutes before Gareth Armstrong struck back with a trade-mark free kick some twenty minutes later.  Girvan goalie Darren Johnson saved two of the home side’s spot-kicks in the 4-3 penalty shoot-out triumph to set up a semi-final with Talbot at Beechwood; the Auchinleck side having been trounced 4-1 by the Glens on the same ground in the section match earlier in the competition. Although an Iain Fulton header gave Girvan the lead the Talbot hit back twice and it is they that will face Irvine Meadow in the final at Beith this Sunday.

Last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Shotts made it three out three draws in the league for Glenafton and although it’s disappointing to drop home points one positive feature is that in all three games the team has fought back from a losing position. The big positive of course is that the Glens 100% away league record with four wins out of four has them well positioned in the league, in second place, one point leaders Ardrossan Winton Rovers.

Girvan are no strangers to draws too with their first three league games all ending with a share of the points Whitletts (A), Dalry (H) and Thorniewood (A). The sequence was broken with the visit of Winton Rovers who hit Girvan for eight, the Hamilton park side finishing with that number of players. The Seasiders steadied the ship the following week and recorded their first league win of the season with a 1-0 win at Lanark. Last week’s home game against Kilsyth Rangers was a victim of October’s wet welcome.

As a full SFA member, Girvan also compete in the William Hills Scottish Cup but in a disappointing game the lost out 1-0 in the first round away to East of Scotland league side Vale of Leithen.

SHOTTS BON ACCORD 1 (0)

Glenafton missed the opportunity to go top of the league with another home draw, their third in three league games. The home side shaded the first half in terms of possession against a well organised Shotts side.  It proved to be a forty-five minutes with chances at both ends the best of which was created by the lively Paul McKenzie but keeper Craig Brown pulled of a fine diving save. H/T Glens 0 Shotts 0

Paul 'Taz' McKenzie

The half-time oranges inspired a much needed zest to the encounter and the Glens in particular looked the more determined to end the stalemate. Loan signing, Paul Murphy, making his home debut, fired in a shot from the edge of the box which skimmed over the crossbar.  A Gareth Armstrong header from a Lewis Sloan cut back then battered off the Bon Accord post. It seemed something had to give and it did, but unexpectedly at the other end of the park with the Glens architects of their own setback. On 52 minutes possession was surrendered carelessly in the middle of the park and the ball gathered gratefully by Gordon McKenna, who instantly headed for the exposed Ally Semple’s goal. On another day the keeper may have made the striker’s task more difficult but after McKenna’s first shot hit the post, the ball fell kindly to allow him to net the rebound.

Gareth 'Bo' Armstrong

The home side licked their wounds and McKenzie in particular was proving a handful for the visitors his attacking style giving Paul Burns a torrid time as he opened up the Shotts defence. Midway through the half it was a case of severe Burns for Taz, when the defender floored him and two minutes later chopped him down, to collect two yellow cards and his matching orders in quick succession.  The Glens continued to press and were creating chances at will with two efforts from Sloan the picks of the bunch.  The Shotts goal survived a few goalmouth scrambles but one ended with Gareth Armstrong wheeling round to smash home a more than well-deserved equaliser, his 12th goal of the season. Minutes later the Glens were denied a stonewaller when a Shotts’ handball in the box was waved away. Late in the game the visitors found a second wind which threatened to blow out birthday boy Ally Semple’s candles.  However a few frantic clearances from his fellow defenders, including a noteworthy one from Craig McEwan, ensured the game finished a goal apiece and a point apiece. Super League 1st Division

HURLFORD UNITED 0 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 (1)

Glenafton maintained their unbeaten league record with a narrow win over Hurlford in a game that started of at a fierce pace, but had by the second half developed into a dour struggle unbecoming of the sumptuous sunshine that bathed Blair Park. Nevertheless the victory lifts the Loch Park side to second place in the league leaving them with a game in hand over and two points behind league leaders Ardrossan Winton Rovers, who defeated Dalry in the only other Super First fixture today.

Paul Murphy

Paul Murphy, loan signing from Stranraer, made his debut for the Glens partnering Cammy Menzies at the heart of the visitors’ defence, who also had Lewis Sloan back in the starting eleven having missed the last two league games.

The early exchanges saw play rage from end to end as both sides built attacks from defence moving the ball at pace from box to box. Perhaps the slickest of these moves was engineered by the Glens as early as the fourth minute when a Gareth Armstrong head flick was gathered by Gareth Campbell just inside the box and instantly rolled back out to Paul McKenzie whose snapshot went just wide of keeper Davie Markey’s right hand post. On 14 minutes a ball in from the left flank caught Glenafton’s defence flat-footed and Ally Semple did well to get down low to push the ball wide for a corner kick, which was mopped up safely as the rearguard redeemed themselves. Ten minutes later with the visitors on the offensive again a loud shout for a Hurlford hand ball on the half-way line from an Andy Bell through-ball was waved away by the referee. The home side , however,  failed to make most of the reprieve and Gareth Armstrong capitalised on a defensive error and won the race to gather the loose ball on the 18 yard line and lob it over the head of the onrushing Markey into the gaping net. Celebrations were subdued as the striker, who had looked out of sorts, left the field of play to loud applause from the travelling support, to be replaced by Steven Greenlees. Murphy made way for the big defender and moved into a central midfield role, with Sloan joining Campbell up front.

Gareth Campbell congratulates Bo

The goal heralded a change in tactics from Hurlford and their passing play was usurped by a more direct route to goal with the disadvantage that possession was typically surrendered more readily and thereby the Glens having much more of the ball. That is not to say the home side didn’t have their moments and none more so than on the half hour mark when a Jamie Wilson header was inches wide of target. Markey, once on Kilmarnock’s books, was the busiest of both keepers being tested by Sloan from distance and then he denied McKenzie twice in the closing five minutes of the half. H/T Hurlford 0 Glens 1

Hurlford started the new half brightly and turned the tables in terms of possession but fairly quickly the game deteriorated into a dour struggle, littered with fouls, few of which yielded set pieces executed with any real potency. The first decent post-interval chance came on 66 minutes when a scramble in the Glens box ended with Semple bravely blocking a close range effort from substitute Ryan Jordan. Five minutes later the impressive Mark Doolan tried from further out but his blistering shot went just over Semple’s fingertips and the bar. At the other end the Glens’ were often let down by the final ball into the box and a ‘killer’ second goal seemed as unlikely as that as a leveller from their opponents. That was until the 90th minute of the game when former Glenafton player Aaron Scoular was fouled in the box by Steven Greenlees and a penalty kick awarded to the home side. Up stepped Robert McPhee and struck the ball firmly to Semple’s right only for the keeper to dive at full stretch and push it past the post. The danger was far from over and the visitors scrambled the first corner clear at the expense of the other, which proved to be less threatening. Further drama at the other end of Blair Park when Gareth Campbell received a second yellow card for his attempt to block a kick out from the home keeper, an attempt to which Markey appeared oblivious and unperturbed, but off went the Glens’ striker and so too the final whistle some forty seconds later. F/T Hurlford 0 Glens 1

Hurlford v Glenafton

Super League 1st Division

Sat 24th September Blair Park, Hurlford KO 2pm

HURLFORD UNITED v GLENAFTON ATHLETIC

Sixth placed Hurlford host fourth placed Glenafton in one of only two league fixtures in the Super League 1st Division this week-end, as the ‘Glasgow’ September week-end impacts on the card. Both sides were idle during last week’s  ‘Ayrshire’ September week-end and were mere spectators as Kilsyth replaced East Kilbride in second place with a fine 3-1 win over the new town jags. Shotts too fired up the league into 5th place with a narrow 2-1 home win over Lanark United, while Winton Rovers remained top thanks to a well-earned point in a 3-3 draw at Whitletts. The Glens travel to Blair Park as the only unbeaten side in the league and a 100% away record (3 wins out of 3 ) while the ‘Ford have a 100% home record (2 wins out if 2) … so something has to give at Blair Park. In the other league fixture Dalry, buoyed by their win over Shotts a fortnight ago entertain the entertaining league leaders.

First and Last

First Glens player to score against Hurlford at Loch Park

Hurlford United , along with Muirkirk Juniors, were  accepted into the Western League in summer of 1938 increasing the membership to twenty clubs.  The first meeting between Hurlford and the Glens took place at Blair Park in mid August when a double from summer-signing 16 year-old McIntyre (Crosshouse Waverly) helped the visitors to a 3-2 win and keep them  top of the league after six games. Before the month was out Hurlford turned the table beating the Glens by the odd goal in seven in the 1st round of the Western League Cup at Connel Park. The New Cumnock side exacted some revenge in the league with a 5-1 victory at Connel Park in April 1939, a game notable for taking the Glens league goal tally beyond the 100 goals (104 goals from 31 games).

Hurlford’s first visit to Loch Park was for a Western League (South Section) game on 3rd December 1960 to face table topping Glens  (having won 9 of their 10 league games). However the game was abandoned after only 10 minutes due to the wintry weather. Hurlford returned to Loch Park on the 14th January 1961 and lost out 3-1 in a Vernon Trophy first round tie, Billy Moffat scoring a double that day. The abandoned league game was never replayed since by the end of the season the Glens were ‘uncatchable’ at the top of the South Section.

Bo opens the scoring at Blair Park

Last season the two sides shared the points in a keenly contested 1-1 draw at Blair Park. Gareth Armstrong giving the visitors an early lead before Andy Stevenson drew the sides level from the penalty spot, just before the hour mark. The return match at Loch Park proved, in the end, to be a little more one-sided with three unanswered goals from Jim Wilson, Gareth Armstrong and Paul McKenzie helping to secure three points for the home side.

Former Afton Lad

After two seasons and over 40 appearances for Glenafton midfielder Aaron Scoular left Loch Park and moved to Blair Park in the summer. His work-rate and enthusiasm earned ‘Scolesy’ great respect from the home support and in his club tally of three goals there were a couple of real crackers – including candidate for goal of the season at Vale of Clyde.

Jim and Cammy leave Loch Park

Transfer listed striker Jim Wilson has left the club and joined Super League 1st Division side Whitletts Victoria. Jim joined Glenafton from Annbank United at the start of last season and scored on his debut away at Kello Rovers in an Ardagh Cup sectional match. Jim’s last Glens’ goal came in the recent 2-2 home league draw with ……Whitletts Vics.

Kris Mitchell celebrates Jim's goal against the Vics

Central defender Cameron McKinnell had recently indicated his desire to leave the club to play for his local side Troon.  The manager and club tried to persuade Cammy to stay to no avail and reluctantly agreed to his request. Cammy made 8 appearances for the Glens since his summer signing from Dalry and scored a crucial winning goal as 9 men Glens defeated Renfrew 3-2  at Western Park.

Glenafton would like to thank Jim and Cammy and wish them all the best at their new clubs.

He turned out for the Glens the week before in the 2-2 home draw with Thorniewood . Cashy also came off the bench for his previous club Girvan in their recent Ardagh Glass Sectional League Cup quarter-final triumph over the Glens at Loch Park.
