A hard working Glens side gained revenge for their defeat over Beith at Bellsdale in the first league match of the season.

Glenafton Athletic squad (16)Beith started reasonably well against a strong wind but fell behind on 12 minutes conceding a goal from corner kick.  Jamie McKernon’s delivery into the box fell perfectly for Kyle McAusland  (left) to fire home from eight yards. Both keepers had little to do as the game became scrappy and further goal scoring chances proved scarce.  Half-hearted penalty appeals from both sides were waved away and Glens were strong enough to prevent Beith converting a couple of late half chances

  • Saturday 21st April 2018

Free flowing football was seldom on show on a difficult pitch and in a game peppered with free kicks which players and supporters alike had often to wait to see which team the referee was penalising.

Glens forced the first corner kick of the game on 8 minutes after Ally Park’s attempted cross from tight on the right was deflected wide. Kyle McAusland’s header from Jamie McKernon’s header looped safely into the hands of former Glens goalie Ally Semple.

Cumnock were having little joy with high balls as Ryan McChesney dominated the aerial battles against striker Scott Anson. On 14 minutes Raymond Montgomerie tried a different approach as he picked up a cute pass from Mark McKenzie at the edge of the box but his shot sailed high and wide of the target.

aa_a_ryan_mcchesney

At the other end Ryan Borris pounced on a Cumnock clearance but Semple was alert to his speculative shot from 25 yards and got down low to push the ball wide for a corner-kick. Anson won this aerial battle to head the ball clear only for it to fall for Dale Moore wand although the Glens midfield did well to strike the ball cleanly from distance through a ruck of players the shot lacked power to test Semple.

The game then entered into a prolonged period of scrappy play where despite the endeavours from both sides there was no end product, as they say.

On 27 minutes fine play by the lively McKenzie at the edge of the box had him evade a trio of defenders before slipping the ball for the incoming Anson to drill a low angled shot that was deflected wide for the visitors first corner-kick. The delivery was headed on at the near post by Richard Murray but Anson miscued his attempt to bury the loose ball and Park cleared the danger.

aa_a_ryan_borris

Dallas and Borris then combined well on the right to allow the latter to give two defenders the slip and drive to the bye line before whipping the ball into the six-yard box for the incoming Mick McCann but instead Murray’s intervening header fell for Cammy Marlow only for his shot to be blocked.

Glens continued to press and Moore tried to his luck from distance and although Semple spilled the shot he quickly fell on the ball to deny the inrushing Dallas the chance of putting away the rebound.

Ten minutes from the break James Hilton’s pass into the box looked to have set McKenzie up but defender Alan Cairns’ presence prevented the striker from fashioning a clean shot at goal and keeper Brian McGarrity rushed to snap up the loose ball as Anson advanced.

Back came Glens and a long throw into a packed box was scrambled clear enabling Hilton to push forward to the centre circle and although his pass went astray he was caught late by McKernon, earning the midfielder a yellow card and the visitors a free-kick. Del Elspin floated the ball into the heart of the box and Scott Anson, having come out second best in aerial battles with McChesney throughout the game, opted to keep his feet on the ground and stooped to glance a perfectly guided header beyond the reach of McGarrity. The visitors 1-0 up on 40 minutes.

H/T Glens 0 Cumnock 1

McChesney emerged from the club house with an ice pack on the back of his neck and three minutes later after his first header of the half his game was over and on came Iain McKnight in his place. The young centre-back was soon in the thick of it heading clear a free kick floated into the back post.

At the other end Dallas won a header deep in the Cumnock box but Murray was on hand to clear the lines.

On 53 minutes Cumnock’s first corner of the half was punched clear by McGarrity and two minutes later Park did enough to put Anson off a short- range shot, after picking up another fine pass from McKenzie. The visitors continued to press. Another corner-kick came and went before McKenzie floated the ball into the six-yard box where McKnight bet Anson to the jump at the expense of a further corner. Anson won a free header at the near post but the ball flew straight into the welcoming hands of McGarrity.

Some respite for the Glens on the hour mark with a long ball upfield for Dallas to chase only for the offside flag to be quickly followed by a yellow card for kicking the ball away!

Glens brought on Darren McGill for Ryan Borris as they went in search of an equaliser. Dallas tried his luck from just outside the ‘D’ but the ball sailed over the bar. A minute later the striker burst through the space between James Lundie and Murray to progress to the right-hand corner of the penalty box before lashing the ball that again flew high and wide of target.

aa_a_dallas

Back came Cumnock with a free-kick taken inches from the right-hand corner flag. It was floated to the back post for Anson to head it back across the face of goal for Lundie, who was being marked by Park, but it was McGarrity who came out on top as he leapt to clutch the ball.

Midway through the half Cumnock doubled their lead. Semple launched the ball upfield and McKnight, at the edge of the box, beat Anson to the jump sending the ball high into the air which was then headed clear by McAusland only to be snapped up Jamie Bannantyne who whipped a great ball into the middle where Scott Anson in space sent a powerful downward header that despite McGarrity’s effort ended up in the net.

aa_a_goal02

The home side brought on striker Joe Andrew for midfielder Cameron Marlow.

However, it was Cumnock that continued to look the livelier and on 77 minutes Anson passed up the chance of a hat-trick after his low-angled shot from close range lacked the power to test McGarrity. A minute later the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Stevie Crawford earned a second yellow card for time-wasting; bizarrely twice refusing to catch a ball that was thrown to him to take a throw in!

Andrew played a neat pass for Dallas to chase down in the box and although he held off defender Kieran Wood his shot was blocked by the knees of Semple rushing from his line. Back came Andrew to drive into the right hand side of the box and whip the ball across the face of goal but there were no takers other than the thankful Semple with a simple save.

In the closing minute Glens won three successive corner-kicks before the handshakes.

GLENS GET THE BETTER OF LUCKLESS ‘LIE.

Glenafton lined up with Conor Lynass and Cameron Marlow filling the full back slots and the centre back pairing of Kyle McAusland and Iain McKnight. Filling the left back position for visitors Arthurlie was former Glenafton favourite Kevin McBride who enjoyed three spells at the club while up front was James Marks, so often a thorn in Glens side, returning to Barrhead from Largs Thistle.

Arthurlie, currently sitting bottom of the table, got off to a great start after Conor Lynass clipped the ankles of Andrew MacLennan in the box and Kieran McAleenan rifled home the spot kick. The visitors continued to look lively on the break and earned a corner-kick five minutes later that was cleared at the near post by the Lynass.

aa_a_goal01

Arthurlie take the lead from the spot

On 12 minutes Glens fashioned their first chance after former Arthurlie player Chris Dallas picked up the ball from Mick McMcann to drive into the box and drill a low shot that was pushed away by keeper Grant Hay. The keeper then showed a safe pair of hands as he clutched Ryan Borris’s cross from wide on the right under the bar.

A half-chance to double their lead came ‘Lie’s way on 17 minutes after James Marks held off Iain McKnight to force his way into the box where Kyle McAusland’s attempt to clear the ball cannoned off keeper Brian McGarrity who had rushed off his goal-line but although the striker snapped up the loose ball the angle to find the empty net was too narrow; the chance was gone.

Jamie McKernon and Kieran McAleenan

Midway through the half Dallas picked up the ball on the half-way line and threaded a superb pass for Moore to chase down and drive into the box where he turned Michael Daly before closing in on goal only for the alert Hay to advance and make a marvellous block. This sparked a good spell of pressure for the home side and another cute pass from Dallas set up a shot from 10 yards out for the lively Jamie McKernon that was pushed round the post by Hay. McCann came within a whisker of connecting with McKernon’s corner before a rattled Arthurlie cleared their lines.

The visitors break upfield was mopped up by Lynass deep on the left who quickly played the ball infield to Cameron Marlow to switch the ball upfield Borris wide on the right. The midfielder’s first attempt to cross the ball into the box was blocked by the sole of MacLennan’s boot and his second attempt was met by the head of Mark Blakey which sent the ball high into the air triggering a run into the box by Ally Park to meet ball sweetly as it dropped and smash it into the net with the keeper rooted to the spot. The sides now level at 1-1 with 23 minutes gone.

Ally , Dale and Jambo celebrate the equaliser

A period of scrappy play ended on 32 minutes with a marvellous piece of play by the industrious Hal Bohme who killed the ball on his chest before giving Marlow the slip to advance into the box and crack a shot from a tight angle only for McGarrity to pull off a superb reflex save before McKnight made a goal saving to clearance as Marks seemed certain to bury the loose ball. The keeper then rose unchallenged to gather the corner-kick with ease.

Brian pulls off a great save from Hal

McCann’s run down the right was brought to an abrupt end by Daly before the free-kick deep into the box saw McKnight win the aerial battle and Dallas’s attempt to find the net blocked by a ruck of blue shirts.

Back up field and Holme, from right hand corner of the box, played a glorious ball to the back post for the incoming MacLennan but the former Renfrew midfielder was just a step off the pace.

Glens countered up the left through Moore who clipped the ball to McCann to head into the box for Dallas to gather and flash the ball across the face of goal to be met at the back post by Borris only for Hay to push the ball round the post. McKernon’s corner was flicked on by head of McKnight and collected at the far side of the box by McAusland who was brought down by a mis-timed tackle by the unfortunate Bohme. Although keeper Hay guessed the right way he couldn’t reach Chris Dallas’s spot kick as he lashed home his 24th goal of the season to put the Glens ahead on 37 minutes.

aa_a_goal03

The visitors responded in determined fashion and the woodwork deny Marks and an equaliser twice in two minutes. The first saw Slick hold of a challenge from McAusland on the six-yard line to get a shot away that crashed off the crossbar with the keeper beaten. Marks then got the better of McAusland again, this time in the air, but his header from 8 yards out struck the base of the post.  Sandwiched between those chances was a powerful downward header from  MacLennan was well held by McGarrity.

Glens carved out the last chance of the half through a tremendous run by Lynass to weave past a number of players to reach the bye-line only for his cut-back for Dallas to be intercepted by Craig Buchanan and headed wide. Hay finished off a fine half claiming the ball without a challenge.

H/T Glens 2 Arthurlie 1

The home side were first to show after the break following a scramble in the box and the ball falling for Moore only his shot from 12 yards to dip over the bar.

Arthurlie countered down the left and Kevin McBride picked out Marks at the corner of the box bit the striker’s shot was blocked and the ball fell for McKernon who immediately launched the ball up the left-wing for Dallas to chase. The striker showed the back-tracking Buchanan a clean pair of heels as he stormed into the box and with Daly now giving chase he timed to perfection his square ball for the incoming Mick McCann to take first time and give Hay no chance from 8 yards out. The Glens now 3-1 up after 49 minutes.

aa_a_goal04

Mick McCann doubles the Glens lead 3-1

The home side were stroking the ball about with some purpose. A long pass from Lynass to McCann was touched on to Park who rolled the ball into the path of Dallas to turn and shoot in the box only to be foiled by the outrushing Hay with another fine block.  The resulting corner kick was taken short by Borris to McKernon and after another quick exchange of the ball the latter’s shot at goal sailed over the bar.

On 57 minutes Arthurlie made a change with Jordan Craig replacing Ryan Scanlon.

McKnight’s push on Marks earned the visitors a free kick 20 yards from goal but Blakey fired the ball into the wall and drilled the rebound deep into the box which was eventually cleared by the Glens defence.

Back came the Glens and Park’s shot from 22 yards dipped over the bar as did McKernon’s angled shot from inside the box courtesy of Blakey’s clearing header. The corner-kick that followed was also cleared as was a free kick floated into the box soon after.

Arthurlie made their second change on 71 minutes with defender Blakey making way for midfielder Dominic O’Halloran as ‘Lie tried to salvage something from the game. A minute later they almost halved the deficit but astonishingly Marks hit the woodwork for the third time in the game. A ball to the back post was headed across goal by Buchanan and there was Marks but his shot from the six- yard line thundered off the crossbar.

At the other end a clever ball into the box from Borris took McBride out of play allowing Lynass a free run to gather the ball and cut it back from the bye-line only for the outstretched leg of Hay to deny Dallas a tap-in.

aa_a_kevin

Kevin McBride pointin out Mick

With 15 minutes to go the visitors made their final with Newlands replacing Kevin McBride and soon after Glens brought on Craig Menzies for Ryan Borris.

McCann released Dallas down the right before running into the box to gather the return ball but it was Hay coming off his line that was the recipient of Dallas’s cross.

On 81 minutes Arthurlie halved the deficit after Marks gathered a knock on and from the left hand corner of the penalty box leathered what seemed an unstoppable shot only for McGarrity to get a strong hand to push the ball away before it fell for substitute Dominic O’Halloran at the far corner of the six yard box to rifle it into the roof of the net.

aa_a_goalo5

Dominic makes it 3-2

With their tails up the Barrhead side went in search of an equaliser and a minute later MacLennan did well to trap a long ball at the edge of the box and set up a shot that drifted well wide of the far post. Back-to-back corners kicks were cleared by the Glens defence as Arthurlie continued to press. The second clearance saw the ball launched back into the box and Buchanan’s header fell for O’Hallaran to tee up a close range shot but Park was on him like a shot with a strong block.

The Glens regained their composure with attack being the best form of defence and saw out the closing 5 minutes to extend their unbeaten league run to 5 games including 4 wins.

Glens made three changes with from the starting line-up against Kilwinning Rangers.  Ian McKnight, Ryan Borris and Dale Moore came in for Alan Cairns (suspended), Conor Lynass and Darren McGill while centre back Ryan McChesney is still out through injury. With manager Craig McEwan on a family break assistant manager Craig Potter was at the helm.

Laurence Dinwoodie took over the hot seat at Girvan following the departure of manger Scott Clelland and his staff midweek and the home side look eager to get off to a flying start under their new boss.

With less than 2 minutes gone Paul Cameron within a whisker of guiding the ball home at the back post after a good cross from the right. Two minutes later Craig Reid whipped another wicked ball into the box for the leaping Darren Mitchell but his powerful header flew wide of target.

Glens carved out their first chance after Dale Moore picked up a pass from Mick McCann on the left before cutting infield and driving forward to hit a low drive from 25 yards that slipped wide of the post. On 10 minutes McCann won a corner that was headed clear only for the Glens to recover the ball and set up Ally Park to thunder a shot from the corner of the penalty box that found the side netting.

aa_a_mcknight.JPG

Ian McKnight and Michael Reilly

Girvan broke upfield and Michael Reilly gave the Glens defence the slip and with the only the keeper to beat the former Glens striker dragged his show wide of target. A minute later he nearly made amends only for his header from a corner kick to dip over the bar.

The game continued to flow from end to end at a good tempo with clear-cut chances thin on the ground before the Glens made the breakthrough on 24 minutes. Jamie McKernon’s free kick was floated deep into the box and although Michael Mossie won the header the ball fell kindly for Ally Park to blast a shot from 15 yards which took a nick off Chris Dallas on the six-yard line before falling for Ryan Borris to pick his spot from 5 yards out.

aa_goal_01a

Ryan slots home the opener

The goal heralded a sustained period of pressure from the visitors with Kyle McAusland and Borris combining well down the right flank and McKernon bossing the midfield. Park had a shot from inside the box blocked while Borris’s effort flew wide of the post. On 28 minutes it was Park again then engineered space to get a shot at goal only for keeper Scott Johnstone to pull off a great save from 12 yards out.

Paul Cameron celebrates the equaliser

Girvan weathered the storm and McKnight kept Reilly at bay coming out on top of a couple aerial battles. The striker however had better luck on the ground after picking up a pass in the box from Jack McDowall. Initially he lost his footing but on recovering he collided with Craig Menzies before tumbling to the ground and the referee pointed to the spot before booking Park for his protests. Paul Cameron kept his cool to slam the ball beyond keeper Brian McGarrity and level the match on 40 minutes. Although the Seasiders pushed for a second it remained all square at the break.

HT Girvan 1 Glens 1

Glens forced an early corner-kick which was cleared. Girvan through Reid with a quick break down the right and cross into the box that was clutched by McGarrity.

Three minutes into the second and the visitors suffered a set back when captain Craig Menzies pulled up injured. He was replaced by Darren McGill who filled an unfamiliar full back role while McAusland moved to centre back to partner McKnight. The reshuffled defence was quickly tested by consecutive Girvan free kicks into the box and the danger cleared both times.

At the other end McKernon clipped a wonderful ball into the box for Chris Dallas but his downward header lacked power and the keeper saved comfortably. Marlow then did well in a crowded box to roll the ball out to McKernon and his low drive from 20 yards was deflected wide for a corner kick, which after a good old stramash was eventually cleared.

Back came Girvan but Reilly couldn’t get the better of McKnight in the box, the young centre half having a fine game, and McKernon was on hand to clear the ball upfield.

aa_goal02a.JPG

Dale Moore fires home to make it 2-1

On 62 minutes Glenafton regained the lead after Dale Moore chased down a ball into the box and held off the defender before unleashing an unstoppable shot from 12 yards past the keeper at full stretch.

Dale celebrates

Midway through the half and Glens brought on Conor Lynass for Ryan Borris and five minutes later Joe Andrew replaced Mick McCann.

Attacks down both flanks by Lynass on the right and then by McGill on the left were repelled. The clearance from the latter ended with Paul Cameron seeing red for an over the ball tackle on Moore. McKernon’s free kick was pushed wide for a corner-kick which was partially cleared but it wasn’t long before the ball was back in the Girvan box as the Glens pressed for a third goal.

On 75 minutes McGill made excellent progress down the left and threaded a great ball between two defenders to pick out Andrew in the box albeit with his back to goal and defender Adam Caldwell in close attention. In a flash Andrew turned the defender and lashed a low angled shot that was brilliantly by the feet of the keeper.

The 10 men of Girvan were still very much in the game and brought on striker Craig Harvey for defender Caldwell in an attempt to salvage a point.

aa_DSC_7764

In safe hands!

Play, although a bit scrappy, was now end-to-end with both sides rewarded with corner kicks for their endeavours. However, on 83 minutes it was a Scott Dinwoodie free kick from just outside the right-hand side of the penalty box that the home side almost claimed the equaliser but McDowall’s header brushed off the back of McAusland’s head and the ball bounced agonisingly inches wide of the post. McGarrity then clutched the corner-kick cleanly under his bar as Stevie O’Donnell challenged.

aa_goal03a

The next Girvan attack saw McKnight win another header at the back post and McAusland launching the loose ball upfield where it was gathered by Dallas on the right. The striker then rolled the ball back for McKernon to chip the ball over the Girvan defence freeing Marlow to beat the offside trap and run unimpeded to the bye-line before cutting the ball back for Joe Andrew to stroke it home from 3 yards out on 85 minutes.  The striker also ended up in the back of the net after being caught badly by the Johnstone; earning the keeper a yellow card.

The closing 5 minutes were played at 10-a-side as Andrew continued to receive treatment and the game ended with handshakes.

KILWINNING weathered a wave of Glens’ attacks while battling against a swirling wind before taking the lead. Chris Dallas and Darren McGill both had chances for the home side before Craig Pettigrew intercepted a Connor Lynass pass which was heading for Dallas.

But Buffs aren’t top of the league by accident and they showed why in 14 minutes with a goal in their first attack. Carlo Monti outpaced Ally Park on the left flank then sent in an inch-perfect pass which found Brian Boylan, who duly converted for 1-0.

Glens don’t like losing goals at home and they stormed back with Dallas setting up Mick McCann for a low shot which was well saved.

Boylan was caught offside in what looked like a tight decision, although there were no complaints from the player, more from the large visiting support. They had something to cheer about 10 minutes later when Adam Strain pulled off a magnificent save from a long-range Jamie McKernon effort.

Despite the wind, this was an enthralling encounter and Buffs were next to launch an attack which ended with a Michael Wardrope shot, from outside the area, just too high. He then got on the end of a sublime crossfield move involving Boylan and Monti, chipping keeper Brian McGarrity, but the ball ended up on the roof of the net.

Strain was called into action in the closing stages of the first half with a save to equal his earlier heroics, this time from a Lynass volley. With just one goal separating the teams, the next one was going to be crucial and Kilwinning started the second half strongly as they went in for the kill.

Having the strong wind behind them, they attempted to score from the kick-off but the ball sailed over. A Sam McCloskey shot failed to trouble McGarrity but he could only parry a Boylan effort, then almost lost a 50-50 to the hitman.

Mother Nature then had a hand in proceedings with a ball being caught in the wind giving Dallas an unexpected chance before a Monti corner was blown back out for a bye-kick. Sub Ryan Borris was involved within minutes of coming on, setting up Park, whose cross was blocked the combining well with fellow sub Dale Moore.

Glenafton Athletic squad (10)Borris went one better with a dangerous cross into the box which caused chaos among the defenders – who were also distracted by an overlapping Park. Moore’s shot blocked but Chris Dallas showed a striker’s instinct to pounce and level the scores with less than 20 minutes left.

Within a minute, Glens were down to 10 men when Alan Cairns was red-carded for dissent when he felt the referee should have played advantage.

Craig McEwan issued instructions from the sidelines and, as so often happens, the 10 men rallied. There were a few nervy moments, including a wind-assisted Ricky Hanvey shot and a brave save from McGarrity at the feet of substitute David Winters.

But Glens finished on top and were desperately unlucky when a Kyle McAusland free-kick found Dallas whose effort was just over the bar. One last chance fell for Wardrope who came close with a free-kick but the stalemate remained and it was a point apiece for two excellent teams.

Glenafton came from behind to beat Pollok 3-1 at Newlandsfield and move up to 6th place in the league.  The home side took the lead on 17 minutes after Brian McGarrity got down low to parry away  Adam Forde’s thundering free-kick from 30 yards and Stefan McCluskey pounced on the loose ball to play it back into the six yard box for Paul Gallacher to guide home from close range.

Glens drew level on 65 minutes after Conor Lynas from almost the right hand side corner flag whipped a glorious ball to the far end of the penalty box for substitute Mick McCann (right) to bullet a sweet header beyond the outstretched arms of keeper Jordan Longmuir.

Chris Dallas

Six minutes later the visitors took the lead after Jamie McKernon floated a free-kick into the box and Kyle McAusland’s jump was impeded by Gallacher. Up stepped Chris Dallas (right) to slam home the spot kick. The former Arthurlie striker would also have the last say on 90 minutes. Joe Andrew forced the defender to paint themselves into a corner before opting to square the ball to Longmuir who had advanced to edge of his six yard box only to let the ball run past him and then see his attempted clearance crash off the shins of the inrushing Dallas for the ball to end in the net. New Cumnock cheers now echoed round Newlandsfield with the Glens enjoying back-to-back league wins.

GLENS TURN THE TIDE AGAINST SEASIDERS

A minute’s silence was held before kick-off in memory of Glenafton supporter Jim Walker who passed away recently. The Walker family sponsored today’s matchball and young grandson Trey handed over the cheque to manager Craig McEwan posed for photos with the manager and club secretary John Stewart.

Glenafton hosted Girvan for the second time this season the Seasiders having won the previous encounter 3-2 in the West of Scotland Cup after racing to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Back to league business and the champions turned the tables on the visitors with three unanswered goals in the opening forty-five which were joined with a last-minute counter to deliver a well-deserved 4-0 victory.

Girvan started brightly with former Glens striker Michael Reilly looking lively up front. On 7 minutes he began a move that ended with Kieran Balfour gathering the ball in the box to turn and shoot only for Kyle McAusland to make a fine block. The ball went out for a throw that was launched to the Glens near post where keeper Brian McGarrity leapt to cleanly clutch the ball from the head of Marc Cameron.

The game however quickly turned in the Glens favour. Conor Lynass and Ally Park combined well down the right-wing before the latter floated a cross to the near post where keeper Scott Johnstone was off his mark to gather the ball as Chris Dallas threatened. Joe Andrew threaded a ball through the middle for Dallas who quickly picked out Marlow at the edge of the box and after a touch or two his shot skewed wide of the post.

On 14 minutes the New Cumnock side made the breakthrough with a piece of fine flowing football on a bumpy pitch.  A long ball into the Glens box was headed cleared by Alan Cairns and snapped up by Darren McGill who set off down the left flank the after burners leaving the full back for dead on the half-way line. When level with the 18-yard line the midfielder squared the ball into the box which was dummied by Andrew to set up a low shot from Dallas from 14 yards out that was pushed away by the keeper only for the alert Andrew to pounce on the loose ball at the near post and clip it across the face of goal for the incoming Conor Lynass to side foot into the net at the back post.

Glens continued to press and two minutes later a McGill free-kick from 22 yards whizzed inches wide of the post. Soon after Marlow picked up a Dallas pass in a busy box and curled a shot that the keeper did well to hold.

On 19 minutes Girvan created their best chance after Jack McDowall whipped a great ball from wide on the left to the back post where Craig Reid’s header just dipped over the bar.

McDowall’s header dips over the bar

The home side were soon back on the front foot and midway through the half a Marlow header from a Jamie McKernon corner was headed of the line and over the bar by Scott Dinwoodie. From a short corner McKernon played a quick one-two with Andrew before returning the ball to the striker on the edge of the box about 15 yards from the bye-line and in a flash, Andrew turned to fire a powerful shot that caught the keeper unaware at his near post. Glen 2-0 on 24 minutes.

Celebrations after Joe makes it 2-0

The visitors responded through McDowall and Reid combing again the latter’s header causing a goal-mouth scramble in which Craig Menzies & McAusland got the better of Dinwoodie & Reilly and McGarrity gathered the loose ball. This proved to be Reilly’s last real action in the game as soon after he earned a straight red card for dissent and the Seasiders reduced to 10 men on 27 minutes.

Things went from bad to worse for Girvan two minutes later after the Glens added a third goal. McGill snapped up the ball on the left before cutting infield to ‘D’ of the penalty box to slip the ball to Lynass on the right-hand side of the box. The midfielder’s shot for goal deflected off the outstretched leg of Darren Mitchell sending the ball high into the air before dropping kindly for Chris Dallas at the back post to guide home his 20th goal of the season from close range.

One-way traffic towards the Girvan goal ensued with chances to add a fourth coming thick and fast. On 31 minutes Park’s angled shot from the right-hand side of the box cannoned off the base of the far post. Johnstone then punched clear McKernon’s corner-kick from the head of Marlow. A minute later Marlow’s low drive from the 18-yard line drifted wide of the post and soon after Marlow’s third bite at the cherry, a powerful shot from outside the box was well held by the keeper.

In a rare Girvan attack a well-timed and executed tackle by McAusland denied Cameron a clear shot at goal.

At the break Stevie O’Donnell replaced Kieran Balfour and slotted into the centre of defence with Mitchell now pushed forward. 10 men Girvan regained their composure and play in the early stages of the new half flowed from end to end with defences dealing well with the half chances on offer.

Conor Lynass

McDowall’s shot was parried by McGarrity and the keeper was quick off the mark to recover the ball before ending in the net. McKernon’s determined run into the box was halted by an equally determined well-timed tackle by Michael Mossie. McKernon tried again with another strong burst into the box and his square ball for Dallas seemed certain to set up a fourth goal only for Mossie to intervene again and cut out the pass at the expense of another corner-kick for the home side which was headed clear. At the other end Mitchell picked out McDowall but his shot, although on target lacked any power to test the keeper.

On 58 minutes Lynass’s run from deep ended with a pass to Dallas who gave Mossie the slip before thundering a shot from the edge of the box that beat the keeper at full stretch before zipping past the post.

On the hour mark the Glens made a double change with Andrew and McGill making way for Mick McCann and Dale Moore. Soon after Ryan McChesney replaced Ally Park with McAusland now filling the right full back slot.  Girvan followed suit with Paul Cameron coming on for Marc Cameron.

Darren McGill

On 72 minutes McDowall and Mitchell combined well down the left before the latter burst into the box and although he stumbled he kept his feet but the chance had gone while delayed claim for a spot kick, for a push in the back, was waved away.

The lively Lynass then leathered a powerful shot from outside the box which was pushed round the post Johnstone.  Although this sparked a sustained spell of pressure for the hosts the Girvan defence stood firm.  At the other end McDowall cut in from the left to curl a shot just wide of the post.

The Glens dominated the dying embers of the game. Moore beat the offside trap to earn himself a free run into the box only to lose his footing on the bumpy surface as he closed in on goal. McAusland’s perseverance won the Glens a corner-kick which was headed out of the box to be met with Moore and his well struck first time daisy-cutter was well held by the keeper.

Cameron Marlow and Andrew Hunter

With two minutes to go McKernon forced his way into the box and shot from 12 yards crashed off he crossbar and Moore’s acrobatic attempt to bury the rebound was bravely blocked by former Glens defender Andrew Hunter before McKernon then tried again, but his shot slipped wide of the target.

On 90 minutes Girvan’s hopes of a consolation goal were dashed when McGarrity promptly plucked Mossie’s header from a corner kick out of the air. Glenafton however had the last say and McGarrity’s clearance upfield was pounced on by Lynass and after pushing forward whipped a peach of a ball across the goal for Moore to bullet home a header from 4 yards out.

Good luck Davie

Glenafton manager Craig McEwan and David Gray have mutually agreed that Davie  be given a free transfer to allow him the opportunity to get more playing time.  The Glenafton management & committee wishes David every success with his next club and thank him for his contribution to Glens winning the treble of Western Premier Division title, Scottish Junior Cup and the Evening Times Champions cup.

Glenafton Athletic squad (4)

David signed for the Glens in January 2016 and scored his first goal for the club the following month in a 5-1 win at Benburb in the West of Scotland Cup with a stunning free-kick from 25 yards out.

The following season it was another spectacular free kick from David that drew the Glens level away at Broxburn in the Scottish Junior Cup 1st round .  The home side hit back to take a 3-1 lead and Glens looked to be out of the competition as they trailed by that scoreline and were down to 10 men as the game went into its final minute.  Joe Andrew gave the Glens a glimmer of hope to make it 3-2 on 90 minutes and then unbelievably on 93 minutes David floated a free kick into a crowded box for Kyle McAusland to head home the equaliser.  The rest is history as Glenafton went on to win the Scottish Junior Cup with David scoring four goals in the competition.

Celebrations as Glens make it 3-3 on 93 minutes

David scored 3 league goals and 11 cup goals to finish second top goal scorer; 2 goals behind top scorer Chris Dallas. His final goal of the season came at  Benburb’s ground again with another cracking free kick as Glens defeated Glasgow Perthshire in the Evening Times Champions Cup final.

As West Region Premier Champions and Scottish Junior Cup Winners Glenafton gained entry into the William Hill Scottish Cup. In their first game in the ‘big Scottish’ for the first time in the club’s history they defeated  Newton Stewart 6-0 in Preliminary Round 1, and fittingly among the goals was a David Gray free-kick.
