Glenafton made four changes to the eleven that started against Cumbernauld United last Saturday with Kieran MacDonald, Andy Stirling, Craig Truesdale and Jamie Petre making way for Craig McCracken, Ollie Rowe, Rocco Devenny and Michael Mullen. While on the Glens bench was Reece Craig on loan from Troon.

A minute’s silence was held before kick-off in memory of Andrew McDicken, a lifelong Glenafton supporter and survivor of the Knockshinnoch disaster in 1950; David Ferguson, a former member of the Glenafton committee and Tam Filson, a former Glenafton player. Our thoughts are with their family and friends.

Drumchapel United kicked off on the sun-drenched Loch Park albeit on a crisp Hallowe’en Day.

An early free kick was floated into a busy Glens box only for captain Ricky Little to head clear. At the other end Michael Mullen blasted a low angled shot from the right hand side of the box on the 18-yard line and although keeper Sam Murdoch smothered the shot it rebounded back into play and he raced to gather the ball at the corner of the six yard box as Ross Smith closed in.

Glenafton were laying siege to the Drumchapel box and to their credit the visitors were defending stoutly before the visitors made the breakthrough on 16 minutes. Mullen gathered the ball on the outskirts of the box before pushing forward to into the ‘D’ only for his shot to be blocked sending the ball out to the right-hand side of the ‘D’, spotted by an alert Ollie Rowe to sprint some 10 yards forward before drilling a low angled shot beyond the reach of the diving keeper at full stretch, some four yard off his line, and into the far corner of the net. Glens 1 Drumchapel 0, 16 mins.

Five minutes later Glens extended their lead, and it was Ollie Rowe again heading home a perfectly weighted cross from Brannan McDermott. Glens 2 Drumchapel 0, 21 mins.

With Jamie Wilson controlling the midfield in the air and on the ground, the home side kept up the pressure with Andy McLaughlin and Rocco Devenny catching the eye as they combined well tight on the right flank. As one attack was blocked off, Devenny headed the ball back up the line to McLaughlin who quickly curled it into a busy box where Callum Wilson met it on the drop to hook a wicked volley from 8 yards out beyond the keeper at full stretch again but inches wide of the post.

Callum Wilson curled a corner kick from the right and low to the outskirts of the six-yard box where Craig McCracken fashioned a shot that sailed just over the bar.

On 35 minutes McCracken switched play from wide on the right just inside the Glens half to pick out Callum Wilson on the left to gather and push forward where he was sandwiched on the corner of 18-yard box. It was Wilson that curled the free kick over the two-man wall for the inrushing team-mates only for the keeper to clutch it cleanly, two yards off his line.

Soon after McDermott pushed forward down the left into corner of the 18 yard box to curl the ball to the far side of the six-yard box for the incoming Mullen only for a defender to leap and head the ball out for a corner which was scrambled clear.

Prior to the half-time Drumchapel enjoyed a spell of possession in the Glens half without testing keeper Marc Fisher before the home side responded with few chances before the break. Keeper Murdoch dived at the feet of the inrushing Smith to steal the ball and soon after the striker lashed a shot from 30 yards that whizzed inches over the fingertips of the leaping keeper and the cross bar.

Drumchapel made a double substitution at the start of the second half.

Glens kicked off and were soon putting the visitors under pressure with waves of attacks. Callum Wilson broke down the right to the corner flag only for his cross to deflect off a determined defender for a corner. Wilson played a short one-two with Smith before driving into the box and cutting a ball back from the bye-line into the six-yard box for Rowe, only for a defender to intercept and kick the ball clear for another corner. Wilson floated the ball to the far side of the corner of the six-yard box where Little fed it back into the goalmouth only for Rowe to clip the ball over the bar under pressure from the keeper.

Smith burst down the left, deep into the box and chipped the ball inside albeit beyond the reach of the leaping Devenny only for the incoming Callum Wilson to pounce and stretch out a leg to drill the ball past both the keeper and a defender on the goal-line. Glens 3 Drumchapel, 56 mins.

The home side continued to press in numbers. Smith on the left clipped a ball into a busy box with a line of red shirts and it was Devenny that took a touch to drill a low shot from six yards that the keeper did well to smother. On 65 minutes Glens made a double substitution with Rocco Devenny and Callum Wilson making way for Lennon Kenney and Reece Craig.

Soon after Mullen from the left-hand side of the box drilled a low shot from 15 yards out only for the keeper to get down low and push the ball inches wide of the base of the post. The corner kick saw the young keeper come off his line and leap from within a group of players from both sides to clutch the ball cleanly.

Kenney and McLaughlin were combining well down the right to feed Jamie Gilmour deep in the box only for his shot to deflect off a defender.  Craig on the half-way line intercepted a forward pass to Mullen to push forward and crack a low shot from the corner of the six-yard box only for the keeper to pull off another fine save.

On 76 minutes Glens were forced to make a change after keeper Marc Fisher picked up an injury with Sam Gibson taking his place.

The home side had won a series of corner kicks that were well defended before they extended their lead. Smith floated a corner kick from the right high into the six yard box and although Jamie Gilmour leapt head and shoulders above the defence the ball dipped over his head only for the alert Craig McCracken to drift off the six-yard line and bullet a downward header from 4 yards out that went through the keeper’s legs and into the net. Glens 4 Drumchapel 0, 79 mins.

The visitors then enjoyed a good spell pushing forward but without testing the keeper, but enough for the Glens to make a double substitution with Jamie Gilmour and Michael Mullen and bring on the fresh legs of Kyle Hutton and Jordan Allan.

The closing play was end-to-end stuff , and it was Glens that came close to adding to their lead. McDermott burst down the right with Kenney for company on his left only to fox a defender and slip the ball into the right-hand side of the box for the incoming Allan to chase down and progress to the corner of the six-yard box only for his low shot to be deflected wide of target.
