PETERSHILL 3 (2)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 0 (0)

Glenafton on the back of an unbeaten October (3 wins and 1 draw)  travelled to face high-flying Petershill in the first match between the two sides since June 2011 when the North Glasgow side retained their Premiership status with a 1-0 aggregate win over the Ayrshire side in the end of season play-off.

Paul McKenzie picked up an early yellow card as the game began at a frantic pace with the home side playing impressive football on the plastic pitch, Stephen McGladrigan in particular catching the eye. On 25 minutes the Peasy striker came close to breaking the deadlock only to be denied by a fine block from an alert Ally Semple. The Glenafton keeper’s counterpart Michael White pulled off a brilliant save in tipping a Gareth Armstrong drive over the bar. Petershill’s pressure paid off on 32 minutes when Semple parried a Richie Burke shot and Ryan Craig netted the rebouned. Seven minutes later the menacing McGladrigan doubled the home side’s tally after latching on to a long clearance and finishing in some style. Just before the break John Paul Boyle came close to halving the visitor’s deficit only for his effort to smack off the crossbar. H/T Petershill 2 Glenafton 0

The game continued to be played at a pace with a dominant Petershill well in control and the Glens were restricted to a few chances by a determined defence marshalled by Ryan Jordan and Ross McCabe.  Although well on top the home side could not conjure up a killer third goal and the visitors began to make some inroads in the closing 15 minutes, however on the occasions when the home defence was breached keeper White kept a clean sheet with some immaculate handling. With 5 minutes to go substitute Sean McKenna, so often a thorn in the Glens’ side through the seasons, came out on top in a goalmouth scramble and nipped in to score from close range.
