Newmains and Glenafton each received a bye in the first round and have had mixed fortunes in their other cup competitions thus far. The Glens topped their Ardagh Sectional League Cup group before falling at the Quarter-Final stage in a penalty shoot-out against Girvan. Two weeks ago they progressed to the West of Scotland Cup 2nd round after a fine 2-1 away win over Premier side Clydebank.
Newmains have the ‘misfortune’ of being in the same section as Surridge Sectional cup specialists Shotts Bon Accord, who have since progressed to the final of the competition. However United finished second in the section, above fellow Central 2nd Division sides Wishaw, Forth Wanderers and Carluke Rovers. The Lanarkshire side hosted Renfrew in the West of Scotland Cup 1st round and a Willie Sawyers hat-trick and an assist for Graham Mort saw the Super League 1st division side progress to the next round.
Newmains league campaign got off to a great start with the Victoria Park side returning from Royal Albert with the points, goals from Sean McCormack and Des Bradshaw help secure a 2-1 victory. United enjoyed less success against their Sectional Cup opponents and lost out to Wishaw (2-1, A), Forth (7-1, H) and Carluke (3-1, A). In between times the trip to St. Rochs ended in a 3-0 defeat.
In their short history Newmains have played only five teams in the Scottish Junior Cup and are by no means strangers to Ayrshire sides having faced Hurlford United, Auchinleck Talbot and Kilbirnie Ladeside. In Season 2006/07 after receiving a bye in the 1st Round, Newmains hosted Hurlford United in the second round and held the Super League 1st Division side to a 1-1 draw. In the return match at Blair Park the Lanarkshire side edged it by the odd goal in a seven goal thriller. The reward was a trip to Premier league leaders Auchinleck Talbot where and a gutsy showing ended in a 3-0 defeat.

Last season a bye in the first was followed by a trip to Premier side Kilbirnie Ladeside. The home side were reduced to 10 men and from the resultant free kick, Sean McCormack headed Newmains ahead to start the pendulum swinging. Ladeside leaped ahead with goals from Alan Kinney and Ryan McGregor before Clark Rafferty equalised before the break. Kinney edged Kilbirnie ahead from the spot only for McCormack to draw the sides level. Kinney claimed his hat-trick and McCormack followed suit to take it to 4-4, but with 10 minutes to go former Glenafton player Simon Eeles slotted home a free-kick to bring the goalscoring in a remarkable match to a heart-breaking conclusion for the visitors.
There have been several teams playing out of Newmains through the years, including Newmains Thistle who hold the honour of winning, in 1891/92, the first ever Lanarkshire league title. However Newmains United, or Newmains United Community Football Club to give them their full name was formed in 2006, following the demise of Coltness United at the close of season 2004/05, and are based at Coltness’ Victoria Park. Maintaining the community club has not been without its challenges and after an encouraging first season, finishing 9th in the Central 2nd Division, Newmains went into abeyance the following season. In the past three seasons the club has finished in 10th, 11th and 12th place and currently sit in 11th place, having played only 5 games.
Coltness United were formed in 1934 and as Lanarkshire Cup winners in 1935/36 gained entry into the SJFA Jubilee Shield competition with all the other regional cup winners. In the first round Coltness were drawn against Ayrshire Cup winners Glenafton Athletic. The two sides met at Hamilton Accies, Douglas Park on Saturday 9th May 1936 and the New Cumnock side came out on top with a narrow 1-0 victory, and went on to reach the final , losing out to Renfrewshire Cup winners Greenock Morton Juniors after a replay.
Coltness United and Glenafton Athletic were among a number of Junior sides that appeared on Ardath Tobacco Football Cards released in 1936 and some of those that took the field in May 1936 at Hamilton surley appear in the photos above.

The New Cumnock Glens took the early initiative and came close to opening the scoring on 13 minutes after determined play down the left by Lewis Sloan ended with a fine cross picking out Gareth Armstrong ghosting in behind the Glencairn defence but his glancing touch took the ball just wide of the target.
On 20 minutes Richie McKillen and Paul Murphy combined to release Paul McKenzie in the box and although his low drilled shot was spilled by Allan ‘The Cat’ Colquhoun the keeper quickly recovered the ball at the second attempt. Five minutes later the keeper got his right paw to a left footed drive by Gareth Campbell from the 18 yard line and pushed the ball over the bar. Five minutes further on and at the other end Ally Semple was alert to get both fists to the ball and punch it from the head of the leaping Mark McCurry .
With half an hour gone the R’glen Glens almost caught the visitors cold with a well worked quickly taken free kick. The impressive Brian Welsh split from those contemplating the set piece and burst into the box to flash a header square for McCarry but the striker’s effort went high and wide of target. Two minutes later McCarry’s match was over after a two footed challenge on McKenzie earned him a red card.
As the interval approached the visitors continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession but they seldom tested ‘The Cat’ as the ten men bedded-in; a McKillen header from a corner kick looping over the bar and nestling on the roof of the net the pick of the efforts. H/T R’glen 0 Glens 0
Two minutes into the new half and a Craig Menzies tackle on Joe McAlpine had Glencairn baying for the referee to show the Afton man red. The official’s choice of yellow earned Glencairn’s Andy McLay one of the same colour, the former Pollok player being over zealous in his protestations.
A scrappy period of play ensued with little in the way in terms of goalmouth action other than an alert Colquhoun rushing from his line to steal the ball from the feet of Armstrong released into the box by a soft-fruit of a pass by Campbell.
On 63 minutes McKenzie menaced his way down the right flank to the bye-line leaving George Moore in his wake as he doubled back into the box but his attempt to do the same to Andy Neil ended with big defender sticking out his left leg to bring the Glenafton man down. Once the red mist and dust had settled Gareth Armstrong stepped up to blast the spot kick but was left licking his wounds as ‘The Cat’ pulled off a great save to push the ball round the post. Two minutes later Colquhoun topped that save, with McKenzie again the architect and Armstrong the foiled. The little midfielder skipped down the right again and skinned McAlpine on his way to the bye line to cut the ball back for Armstrong who cracked the ball from 8 yards out through a packed six yard box but ‘The Cat’ sprang to his right to claw the ball away to safety with both hands . Soon after the keeper claimed his hat-trick of classy saves as he pushed a McKillen header from a corner-kick round the post. Armstrong continued to pile the on the pressure, outmuscling the triumvirate of Jack Bennet, Reid and Moore to gather a Campbell header played into the box but his lob over the outcoming Colquhoun sailed over the bar.
The ten men weathered the storm and the game entered a period where neither side looked in danger of scoring a goal and thereby conceding one. Semple resorting at times to the long ball to get behind the R’glen defence while his counterpart Colquhoun stuck to his game plan, from kick-off, of holding on to the ball as long as he possibly could before releasing it.
With 6 minutes to go the yellow carded McLay caught Craig Potter in the face and the Glens man had to replaced by Andy Bell, who a minute later caught McAlpine with a high boot. It was yellow for Bell and the clubhouse for Rutherglen’s assistant manager Robert Torrance as he took umbrage with the official’s decision-making.
Rutherglen at last threw caution to the wind displaying a belief that a winner could be fashioned in the dying minutes. The Glenafton defence scrambled clear a few of these attempts but could only look on when an angled shot from Moore had Semple scurrying across his line and relieved to watch the ball trundle wide. RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN v GLENAFTON ATHLETIC
League leaders Glenafton return to league business after a fine 2-1 win over Premier side Clydebank in the West of Scotland Cup at Holm Park on Saturday. A looping header Gareth Armstrong, his 14th goal in 14 appearances, and a stunning strike from Paul McKenzie overturned a close range header from Stevie Dymock for the hosts. To add to the feel good factor the club announced that Paul Murphy’s one month loan from Stranraer has been extended for another month.
Rutherglen too claimed a Premier scalp in the West of Scotland cup and arguably trumped the Glens’ performance with a 1-0 win away at Adamslie Park over a high-flying Rob Roy team with former Afton lads Kevin McBride and David Gormley in their ranks. A late sweet strike from 22-year-old striker Brett Agnew expelling the potential penalty shoot-out. The Glasgow side faced a tough trip to Fife in the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup 1st round and narrowly lost out by the only goal of the game to East Premier league leaders Oakley United.
Rutherglen comfortably won the Super League 1st Division in 2009/10 finishing 21 points above 7th placed Glenafton and indeed did the double over the New Cumnock side, 3-2 at the Gateway and 1-0 at Loch Park. Major changes to the management and playing staff in the close season was not the best preparation for their first season in the top flight of the West Region and the other Glens were left isolated in bottom place with an unlucky 13 points.
The return to the Super 1st saw relegated Rutherglen open their league campaign with a promising 3-1 victory at promoted Thorniewood. However a four game losing streak, to Ardrossan (h), Lanark (a), Kilsyth (h) and East Kilbride (h) yielded no points. More recently back to back wins at Cumbernauld and Shotts bring with a more balance looked to the league record of Pl7 W3 Do L4 F14 A15 Pts9.
Andy Ward was signed in the close season of 2008/09 from East Kilbride Thistle by Gordon Dalziel. He made 10 starts and 11 appearances from the bench in a season that ended with the Glens being relegated after losing the play-off to Lanark. A no-nonsense dependable defender Andy joined Rob Roy in their first season in the Premier Division with fellow former Afton Lads Steven McGregor, Craig Feroz and Chris Zok and joined Rutherglen in the close season.
Glenafton are rightly proud of the fact that after winning a Scottish Junior Cup medal with the Glens in the 1-0 win over Tayport in 1993 at Firhill, Tom Brown went on to win a senior Scottish Cup winners medal with Kilmarnock in the 1-0 triumph over Falkirk in 1997 at Ibrox.
Rutherglen share this Killie connection. Right half John Bagan won a Scottish Junior Cup winners medal in the Glens 1-0 win over St. Anthonys in 1919 at Hampden Park and returned to the same ground the following year with Kilmarnock to beat Albion Rovers in the Scottish Cup Final in front of 95,000 spectators. Prior to joining Rutherglen Glencairn John won a Scottish Juvenile Cup winners medal with Mosshill United in 1918 and many commentators believe he holds a unique record in Scottish football of winning Juvenile, Junior and Senior Scottish Cup winner medals in consecutive seasons. Sadly, injury put paid to John’s career at Kilmarnock and in 1922 he moved to Beith. Tragically he passed away in 1925, aged 27 years old in his home town of Rutherglen.

Tom, had played for local Juvenile side Afton Lily and Junior side Cronberry Eglinton before the move in 1913 to Killie. In February 1921, Tom joined Preston North end for a fee of £4,600, a contender for a world record transfer fee at the time.
Glenafton are pleased to announce that midfielder Paul Murphy’s one-month loan deal from Stranraer has been extended for another month. Prior to kick off both sides and the match officials lifted aloft ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ cards as part of football’s committment, on and off the park, to combat racism in our society. This was followed by a minute’s silence in memory of Clydebank supporter Andy Logan who sadly passed away recently and was observed by supporters of both sides united in the appreciation of the loss a loyal club supporter.
Having lost twice in league matches to Clydebank last season Glenafton were clearly determined to put up a good show against the newly promoted Premier side and had them on the back foot in the early exchanges. In the opening minute Gareth Armstrong lobbed the ball into the Bankies’ box for Lewis Sloan to chase only for giant defender Barry Jones to intercept but his backward header was spilled by keeper Robert Hamilton, who quickly redeemed himself when he turned Sloan’s effort to lash the loose ball home out for a corner.
Two minutes later the keeper was glad to watch a diving header from Armstrong from 10 yards narrowly miss the target. On 10 minutes Paul McKenzie weaved his way to the goal line leaving a bunch of Bankies in his wake but former Glenafton defender Gordon Moffat and captain Ross Campbell combined to prevent the industrious Gareth Campbell drilling the cut back home.
The home side carved out their first chance in 15 minutes when a cute ball from Andy Paterson down the left released live-wire Darren McKinnon who fired the ball across the face of the goal for Stevie Dymock to set up Vinnie Berry but his powerful shot from close range pulled off a fine save from Ally Semple, the keeper getting both hands to the ball in a flash. The visitors responded with an equally fluent move down their right flank Craig McEwan finding Craig Potter on the edge of the box who rolled the ball back to Paul Murphy to fire it goalward from twenty yards out but on this occasion Hamilton held with a safe pair of hands.
On twenty minutes Potter dinked a delightful ball through the middle for Armstrong to chase and loft into the box over the heads of the back-tracking Ross Campbell and the outcoming Hamilton for Gareth Campbell who was bundled off the ball by Moffat, but claims for a penalty were muted by an offside flag. Three minutes later Campbell’s bravery saw off the challenge of Ross Campbell and Paterson to allow McKenzie to take the ball to the bye-line again but the cut-back was marginally behind Potter well placed on the 6 yard line.

The home side began to put their own stamp on the match in the closing twenty minutes of the half as Berry, MacKinnon and Dymock began to take the pressure off their unsettled defence moving the ball about at pace and with some style. On 26 minutes Ian Gold nicked the ball from Murphy on the half way line for Berry to find the dynamic Dymock down the left who cut inside and squared the ball for Tommy Martin but his shot from 20 yards blocked by Potter sent the ball skywards only for MacKinnon to greet it on its descent with an audacious overhead kick which whizzed past Semple’s far post with the keeper beaten.
Despite their enhanced share of possession ‘blocked shots’ at the edge of Glenafton’s penalty box were more often than not the final outcome of some fast flowing football by the hosts, as the visitors rearguard stood firm. However on 38 minutes the Bankies breached the Glens’ defence and Dymock with Semple to beat was unfortunate to see his angled shot come off the base of the post and Graham Smith lacked the sharpness of thought to despatch the loose ball and McKenzie was on hand to clear and diffuse the danger. The Bankies began brightly and on 56 minutes Semple did well to smother a close range Dymock header. Two minutes later Stevie Dymock made not mistake bulleting home a flashing header from a killer of a cross from the right by Smith who inevitably had been picked out by play-maker MacKinnon.

As is their way the Glenafton head stayed aloft and they almost drew level immediately as Hamilton struggled to hold a cross from Campbell but Sloan’s attempt to net the loose ball was cleared off the line by Moffat. However, on 62 minutes the big defender was outjumped in the box by Gareth Armstrong and his looping header outfoxed Hamilton and the ball dropped unperturbed and nestled into the net at the back post.
Both sides went all out for the equaliser with the Bankies creating the better of chances danger man Dymock going close twice and a MacKinnon header flashing wide .

With 8 minutes to go Glenafton clinched it with quite a stunning goal. McEwan on the right picked out Sloan with a throw-in and slotted the return ball to Potter menacingly placed where the ‘D’ meets the 18 yard line, shielding the ball from Gold, he passed the baton to Paul McKenzie to force his way along the 18 yard line and on reaching midway unleashed a ferocious left foot strike that exploded into Hamilton’s top right hand corner. The celebrations that followed came close to matching the quality of the goal.

Five minutes later the visitors came close to doubling their lead when a Murphy header caused panic in the Bankies’ six yard box. Hamilton and Moffat combined to block Armstrong and then Jones and Paterson joined the fray to deny Gareth Campbell before the ball found its way back to instigator Murphy and his angled net bound shot bounced off the back of Moffat, as he rose from the ground, and over the bar.
In the final minute of regulation play a close range header from substitute Ross McPherson looked sure to take the cup tie to a penalty shoot-out but it skimmed over the Glens’ bar. F/T Bankies 1 Glens 2

Glenafton travel to Holm Park, Yoker to face Premier new boys Clydebank in the West of Scotland Cup. The Bankies were one of only two sides to do the league double over the Glens last season. A classy late free kick from Paul Allum separated the sides at Holm Park. The corresponding fixture at Loch Park was a bit more one-sided with the visitors in scintillating form and goals from Stevie Dymock (2), and Ross Campbell helping them to a 3-0 win.

Clydebank are still acclimatising to their first season in the top flight of Junior football since their return to the junior realms. The league campaign began with two narrow defeats on the trot, away to Rob Roy (3-2) and at home to Petershill (1-0). Budgie’s boys bounced with a trilling five-four victory over Pollok at Newllandsfield. Back down to earth with a bump as fellow promotees and bogey side Ashfield ran out 3-0 winners at Yoker. The trip to Meadow was a close affair with the home side winning by the odd goal in three. An out of sorts Arthurlie won 4-2 at Holm Park to record their first league win of the season. A point at Townhead (1-1) was swiflty followed by another three last week with a 2-0 win over the languishing Ladeside of Kilbirnie.
Former Afton Lad: Gordon Moffat
Gordon joined Glenafton, then under Gordon Dalziel, in September 2009 from East Stirlingshire having had previous senior experience with Albion Rovers (06/07) and Annan Athletic (00/01-05/06). He made 47 starts for the club during his two seasons at Loch Park and scored two goals, one at Talbot in the league and the other at Beith in the Ayrshire Cup. ‘Moff’s’ versatility in defence or midfield was greatly appreciated by the home support and he moved onto Clydebank at the start of season 2010/11 with best wishes from the club.
Glenafton Athletic have been drawn away to Central 2nd Division side Newmains United in the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup 2nd round.

Glenafton unravelled a string of three home league draws in a row with a scintillating second half display that had Girvan tied in knots. The Seasiders were left beached as the home side netted three goals in a ten minute spell and left Loch Park with only a late consolation.
Overcast conditions at kick-off with rain threatening did little to dampen the aspirations of both sides to play open and attacking football which in turn yielded several chances at both ends. Ian Cashmore revelled in facing his former side and almost set up the opener for the Glens in four minutes when his cross from the left to the back post was partially cleared by Alan Love. In raced Craig Potter to smash the ball on the drop from 8 yards out only for Darren Johnson to stretch and pull off a stunning save and then to partner Nicky Faulds in preventing Potter heading home the rebound.
Three minutes later the visitors moved the ball from box to box with a slick passing move that saw the impressive Neil Gilmour pick out Sean McKenna who then rolled the ball into the path of Lee McCrae and the midfielder’s fierce shot from the corner of the penalty box whizzed over Ally Semple’s bar.
At the other end the Glens forced a series of corners the best of which saw Cashmore dive low at the edge of the six yard box but his flashing header was blocked at the near post by former Glenafton player Scott McQuade. Good runs by Cashmore and then McKenzie ended disappointingly for the home side with Johnson not being tested. The same could be said for visitors McKenna and McCrae their finishing not matching their eye-catching build up play.

On the half hour mark with the drizzle now coating the playing surface tempers began to get the better of both sides. Cashmore was the victim of a couple of crunching tackles which although earned the home side free-kicks, the perpetrators went unpunished. Five minutes later Glens captain Robbie Henderson the purveyor of an equally robust tackle was shown yellow and the official’s apparent lack of consistency not appreciated by the vocal home support.
The game entered a scrappy spell as the previous fluency fizzled out but in the dying minutes of the half the visitors came close to severing the stalemate. Richie McKillen outjumped Gilmour at the back post to head clear and from the resultant corner, also to the back post, Craig Menzies headed clear as McKenna looked certain to head home the opener. Light drizzle had now become heavy horizontal drizzle and with it thoughts that the game could reach the same dizzy heights of the opening twenty minutes or so were in danger of being washed away. Thankfully, Paul McKenzie had other ideas and the magical midfielder took the game by the scruff of the neck. Skipping past McQuade on the half-way line he exploded down the left flank, played an exquisite one-two with Cashmore on his way to the dead ball line, cut back and fired the ball across the goal mouth only for it to be scrambled cleared by Scott McGilp, the ball eventually falling to Lewis Sloan but his effort sailed high over the bar.
At the other end Menzies was injured as the Glens eventually scrambled cleared a Girvan attack and minutes later his replacement Ryan McChesney beat Stuart Peacock in the air but his header looped inches over the bar much to the relief of Johnston at full stretch.
On 58 minutes McKenzie picked up a Gareth Armstrong header at the edge of the box but with his way to goal blocked wheeled around to feed Craig McEwan who launched the ball to the back post where Paul Murphy and Gareth Armstrong were lurking with intent. The former won the header and the latter beat keeper Darren Johnston in the race to retrieve the loose ball and hook it back into the net from the six yard line.

Two minutes later another ball to the back post, Cashmore the provider, allowed Armstrong to return the favour and beat Johnston to the ball and Paul Murphy to head it home from four yards.

The home side’s tails were up and McKenzie was running the visitors ragged and as he skipped passed one after another he played a deft one-two with Armstrong as he entered the box and pulled back the right foot to let fly only to be bundled to the deck. No penalty and as play raged on the ball was recovered by the Glens and a Murphy header, ironically from the penalty post, zipped past the post with Johnston rooted to his goal line.
On 67 minutes Sloan was brought down by McGilp some 30 yards or so from goal. Too far for a shot a goal the free kick was played into the box where substitute Gareth Campbell with his back to goal rose to beat McQuade and send the ball skywards and looping over Johnston at full stretch.

Gutted Girvan to their credit kept their cool and on 73 minutes a number of their arms were raised aloft in appeal as the Glens scrambled clear a free kick in a packed area, but again the official witnessed nothing to warrant a penalty. Similarly, ten minutes later in the other box, Potter’s claim for a spot kick after a Kyle Faulds challenge were waved away.
The visitors’ consolation came with two minutes to go as Alan Love weaved his way through a busy penalty box and played a clever one-two with Stuart Wilson before guiding the ball home from close range.

Steven Greenlees in action at Hurlford
Glenafton defender Steven Greenlees has signed for Super League 1st Division side Hurlford United. Steven was former manager Greg Denham’s first signing for Glenafton when he joined the club in September 2010, initially on a loan deal from Albion Rovers before a permanent move was concluded. He made 25 starts that season and scored two goals, both coming in a 6-3 league win at Bellshill. This season Steven has made 3 starts and a handful appearances from the bench, including one in the recent league win over Hurlford at Blair Park. The club would like to thank Steven and wish him all the best for the future.
According to the Pollok web-site former Glenafton player Stephen Docherty has returned to Pollok to take up a coaching role, following the recent departure of Jimmy McQuade.
