LANARK UNITED 1 (0) GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 (0)
A late goal from Paul McKenzie cancelled out a stunning strike from former Glens’ striker Stuart Tullis to earn Glenafton a share of the points. The home side will rue their failure to convert a number of gilt edge chances to kill off the game and yet bizarrely will count themselves fortunate not to have lost the game at the death as a lack of discipline saw them reduced to 9 men and the woodwork come between the visitors and victory.
A light shower gave way to glorious sunshine at Moor Park as the teams exited from the Lanark-blue dressing rooms and trooped in single file up the steps, cordoned off by a brilliant-white coated brick wall, and on to the lush green grass which at first glance also appeared to have been given a coat of paint by those dedicated people of llanerch(‘a clear space, glade’) that clearly take a great pride in their club.
With top goalscorer Gareth Armstrong unavailable for selection Glenafton started with Gareth Campbell and Ian Cashmore up front while Ryan McChesney partnered Robbie Henderson in the heart of the back four. Meanwhile Lanark, managed by former Glenafton player Tam McDonald, welcomed back new signing and former Glenafton player Stuart Tullis to his second spell at Moor Park.
The tentative start to the match exploded into life on 5 minutes after Glenafton surrendered possession cheaply on the edge of the Lanark box allowing John Renwick to release Tullis like a tornado down the right flank who whizzed the ball across the face of the goal for Chris McDougall only for McChesney to steal the ball as the striker threatened to slam home the opener.
Seven minutes later the home side laid siege to the visitors’ goal with a series of corners kicks. The first repelled by the head of Paul Murphy and the next clawed away by keeper Ally Semple and another headed just wide of target by the impressive McDougall. Allan McCrum was having a fine game for the home side and dictating much of the play. As the pressure mounted McDougall showed McChesney a clean pair of heels in the chase for a long through ball, but the young defender forced him wide and the striker’s shot from a tight angle was pushed round the post by an outstretched Semple. The ensuing short corner kick set up Gary Gow at the edge of the box but his shot was tipped over the bar by Semple.
There was some respite for Glenafton who did carve out the occasional chance or two albeit more by sheer endeavour than by fluent joined up play from box to box. On 16 minutes Andy Bell from the corner of the box fired just wide of keeper Ross Hyslop’s right hand post. Two minutes later Bell was tripped as he tried to breach the Lanark box but as was so often the case Glenafton’s set pieces lacked any potency and imagination. Cashmore did conjure up something special but his overhead kick in a crowded penalty area sailed over Hyslop’s bar.
The game settled into a pattern of end-to-end play but with defences well on top, outjumping their attacking counterparts and winning the vast majority of headers from the host of high balls launched into the respective boxes.
Five minutes from the break and Paul McKenzie mastered the monotony taking the ball to the bye-line for the first time, leaving David Middleton in his wake and taking Jack Marriot out of play as he rolled the ball into the six yard box for Cashmore but in stepped Liam Mushet to clear the danger. H/T Lanark 0 Glens 0
Lanark forced a corner kick within 30 seconds of the restart and Murphy was on hand to head clear, or so it seemed, but again possession was surrendered cheaply and Tullis presented with a one-on-one with Semple, the keeper coming out on top with a superb stop. At the other end Campbell continued to scrap for every ball and won his side a free kick some 25 yards out but although McKenzie’s attempt beat the wall, Hyslop’s handling was sound.
On 57 minutes Semple saved superbly again clutching a close range header from McDougall after a great run and cross from Alan McFadden. A minute later however the keeper had no chance when Stuart Tullis pounced on a loose ball and running across field hit the ball on his stride lobbing it over Semple from 20 yards or so out. His acrobatic celebrations were of similar quality. Soon after Tullis carved out another chance but Semple was glad to see the ball go high and wide of target.
Glenafton responded by bringing on Craig McEwan to replace Kris Mitchell and Lewis Sloan for Ian Cashmore. With Sloan and McKenzie on either flank and Potter and Murphy pushed forward to support Campbell the visitors were beginning to make some in roads with sustained attacks and yet the home side passed up a glorious chance to double their lead on 74 minutes, McFadden’s free header from a few yards out heading skywards.
Sloan was proving a handful down the right-wing and the balls into the box causing panic in the home guard, one in particular headed towards goal forcing Hyslop to cling and swing on his post to escort the ball out for the corner. On 82 minutes Glenafton’s momentum culminated in a goal of class. Murphy with his back to goal (and Middleton at his back) laid the ball off to Potter at the corner of the penalty box, who turned and left Gow at his back before whipping a wonderful ball across the goalmouth that missed the incoming Campbell’s toe by millimetres on its way to the back post where Paul McKenzie arrived in perfect time to crash the ball home.
Both sides went in search of the winner but Lanark’s chances diminished when substitute Chris Seenan (a former trialist at Glenafton) was shown a red card on 85 minutes after McChesney was floored during some jostling as a group of players gathered waiting on a free-kick being fired into the Glens’ box. Two minutes later a Sloan cross was headed across goal by Murphy and the courageous Campbell got his head to the ball before the hands of the airborne Hyslop but the ball crashed off the post and was hooked clear by Renwick. On 90 minutes Lanark were reduced to 9 men after substitute Ross Fletcher received a red card for scything down McKenzie as the visitors mounted another attack. From the free kick Murphy outjumped Middleton and Hyslop was relieved to see the ball slip wide of his far post as he scurried across his goal line. Deep into injury time Mushet was fortunate not to join in his team-mates in the crowded early bath after badly mistiming a tackle on Sloan, the resultant free kick proving to be the last kick of the game. Kilsyth go top of the league and Glenafton are now second , a point behind and having played a game more.
Thomas Langan, centre-forward, signed for Glenafton Athletic in the summer of 1934 and his haul of goals helped the Glens go on to win the Western League Championship that season. The following year he earned a Scottish Junior international cap. After three seasons with Glenafton he joined Scottish Junior Cup holders Arthurlie and later moved to Johnstone Athletic.
During the war Tommy joined the RAF and on the 7th June 1944, the day after D-Day, Sergeant Thomas Langan 115 Squadron was lost during RAF operations. His name proudly adorns the War Memorial in his home town of Galston.

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

LANARK UNITED v GLENAFTON ATHLETIC
Despite the 5-0 defeat at Girvan last week-end Glenafton remain top of the league as they prepare to visit Lanark United this Saturday. A shock to the system no doubt but the New Cumnock side recovered from the same scoreline at the same venue last season and will be eager to put it behind them as quickly as they can. The game at Girvan also saw top goalscorer Gareth Armstrong hobble off injured but hopefully he will be fit for the trip to Moor Park.
Lanark currently sit 10th in the league with 10 points from 10 games. However seven of these points have been garnered over their last four games, including three at Blair Park last Saturday with a fine 2-1 win over Hurlford with a strike from Chris McDougall and a spot kick from Liam Mushet.

Glenafton and Lanark have never met on league business before but of course the two sides crossed swords in the ill-fated play-off at the close of season 2008-09. As the Premier Division side the Glens hosted the 1st leg and recovered from 1-0 down to take a 2-1 lead into the 2nd leg thanks to goals from Chris Zok and Craig Feroz. The narrow lead effectively narrowed further when Jamie Doyle saw red early in the match and when a Feroz header crashed off the bar the omens weren’t great and Lanark struck twice to earn promotion to the Premier Division for the first time and ended Glenafton’s seven-year term in the top flight.
However, my abiding memory of that defeat on a forgetful Friday night at Lanark was the then club President John Timpany coming back to Loch Park and working through the night to prepare for Glenafton’s Youth Festival of Football, that kicked off the next morning. Get better soon, Jock.
Stuart Tullis from St. Mungo Amateurs impressed in a couple of pre-season friendlies at the start of Season 2008/09 and turned out as a trialist in some of the Ardagh Sectional League Cup matches before being signed by manager Gordon Dalziel. He came off the bench in the first three league games of the season and enjoyed an unbeaten record with victories over Neilston (a 1-0), Cumnock Juniors (h 4-0) and a draw at Vale of Clyde (a 3-3). Stuart also came off the bench in the 5-2 West of Scotland Cup 1st round win over Thorniewood United but a red card ensured an early bath for the youngster. Stuart was with Lanark United last season and returned to the Yowes last week signing from Campsie Minerva.

League leaders Glenafton ‘s unbeaten league run came to a humbling halt at Hamilton Park as they shipped five goals to the second from bottom Seasiders.
Stuart Peacock put the home side ahead and their tails up as early as the second minute, heading home an inswinging corner. Paul McKenzie tried to respond for the visitors, dribbling his way in from the right flank but his shot at goal missed the target by inches. Another corner kick and another goal for Girvan with former Arthurlie striker John Bradford netting with a diving header on 15 minutes. Again Glenafton responded well and Darren Johnston in the Girvan goal performed acrobatics to deny Gareth Armstrong from close range. However, the Seasiders surged forward and John Bradford got on the end of a Neal Gilmour cross to head flick his second and Girvan’s third goal. Former Girvan player Ian Cashmore came on for the injured Armstrong but it was former Glenafton player Scott McQuade that was next to net , his deflected shot on 37 minutes beating keeper Ally Semple. McKenzie tried to pull one back before the break for the vanquished visitors but Johnstone had the measure of him with a fine save. H/T Girvan 4 Glenafton 0.
The Glens huffed and puffed after the break but lacked the cutting edge to convert the few chances they did create. With 15 minutes to go Bradford passed up the chance to claim the match ball when he blazed a spot-kick over Semple’s bar. A minute later Sean McKenna, no stranger to scoring against the Glens, completed the rout with Girvan’s fifth. F/T Girvan 5 Glenafton 0

Both the sides that could have leap-frogged the Glens in the league also lost today, Ardrossan Winton Rovers going down 2-1 at home to Thorniewood United and East Kilbride losing 5-1 at Shotts, and so the New Cumnock side remain top of the league.

GIRVAN v GLENAFTON ATHLETIC
After a hard fought and well earned win over Newmains United in the Scottish Junior Cup the Glens return to league business with a trip to face Girvan this Saturday. Former Girvan player Ian Cashmore scored his first Glens goals from open play last week-end (having opened his Afton account with a spot kick in the league win at Winton Rovers) while another former Seasider Ricky Hay made his Glenafton debut from the bench. With captain Robbie Henderson and top scorer Gareth Armstrong not featuring in the cup tie, changes to the Glenafton line up this week-end can be expected.
Girvan and Glens are no strangers having faced each other twice this season already with honours shared – the Seasiders coming out on top in the Ardagh League Cup Quarter Final at Loch Park via a penalty shoot-out, while the Glens avenged the loss with a convincing 3-1 league win at the same venue four weeks ago. Although the Seasiders sit second from bottom, some 13 points behind league leaders Glens, the New Cumnock side know only too well how hard it is to return from Hamilton Park with all three points – a feat they have yet to achieve. Nevertheless the two previous league encounters in south Ayrshire have been noteworthy. Last season the visitors were drubbed 5-0 but it proved to be something of a turning point for the Glens and by the end of the season they pipped their hosts to the play-off place. The season before witnessed an exceptional display of sportmanship from the Girvanites, having scored a freak goal when returning the ball to the Glens after a stoppage due to injury, the home side stepped aside to a man and allowed the visitors to equalise from the kick-off.

Scott McQuade signed for the Glens from Kello Rovers, under Gerry Collins, at the start of season 2006/07 and scored his only goal for the club in his debut, a 10-0 win over Muirkirk in an Ayrshire Sectional League cup match. Scott went on to make 12 appearances for the Glens before moving on to Threave Rovers the following season. He later joined Dalbeattie Star where he played in the same side as Lewis Sloan and then returned to Kello Rovers. Scott made the move from Nithside to the Seaside in the close season.
Stuart Currie has moved to Prestwick side Glenburn Amateurs. He midfielder formerly played with Kilmarnock U19s and signed for Glenafton, by Mark Shanks, at the start of Season 2010/11 . A determined hard-working defender with good burst of pace down the wing Stuart made over 20 appearances that season. The club would like to thank Stuart and wish him well for the future.
