GIRVAN v GLENAFTON ATHLETIC
After a hard fought and well earned win over Newmains United in the Scottish Junior Cup the Glens return to league business with a trip to face Girvan this Saturday. Former Girvan player Ian Cashmore scored his first Glens goals from open play last week-end (having opened his Afton account with a spot kick in the league win at Winton Rovers) while another former Seasider Ricky Hay made his Glenafton debut from the bench. With captain Robbie Henderson and top scorer Gareth Armstrong not featuring in the cup tie, changes to the Glenafton line up this week-end can be expected.
Girvan and Glens are no strangers having faced each other twice this season already with honours shared – the Seasiders coming out on top in the Ardagh League Cup Quarter Final at Loch Park via a penalty shoot-out, while the Glens avenged the loss with a convincing 3-1 league win at the same venue four weeks ago. Although the Seasiders sit second from bottom, some 13 points behind league leaders Glens, the New Cumnock side know only too well how hard it is to return from Hamilton Park with all three points – a feat they have yet to achieve. Nevertheless the two previous league encounters in south Ayrshire have been noteworthy. Last season the visitors were drubbed 5-0 but it proved to be something of a turning point for the Glens and by the end of the season they pipped their hosts to the play-off place. The season before witnessed an exceptional display of sportmanship from the Girvanites, having scored a freak goal when returning the ball to the Glens after a stoppage due to injury, the home side stepped aside to a man and allowed the visitors to equalise from the kick-off.
Other league matches: Ardrossan v Winton, East Kilbride v Shotts, Hurlford v Lanark, Kilsyth v Dalry, Whitletts v Rutherglen
Former Afton Lad
Scott McQuade signed for the Glens from Kello Rovers, under Gerry Collins, at the start of season 2006/07 and scored his only goal for the club in his debut, a 10-0 win over Muirkirk in an Ayrshire Sectional League cup match. Scott went on to make 12 appearances for the Glens before moving on to Threave Rovers the following season. He later joined Dalbeattie Star where he played in the same side as Lewis Sloan and then returned to Kello Rovers. Scott made the move from Nithside to the Seaside in the close season.
