Stagecoach Western Super League Premier Division : Match 9

  • Saturday 29th November, Townhead Park Cumnock

CUMNOCK JUNIORS 0 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2  (2)

Glens visited Townhead Park to face local rivals Cumnock Juniors, looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing defeat to Rob Roy in the Scottish Cup, whilst the Townhead Park side were looking to record their second league win of the campaign. Glens welcomed back influential playmaker Jamie McKernon to the side at the expense of the injured Dan Orsi.

Aaron Connolly

Aaron Connolly

Following a long period of sustained pressure, the visitors opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Winger Adam Strachan released the overlapping Alan Cairns down the left hand side, and his drilled cross was only half cleared by the Cumnock defence to ex Cumnock striker Aaron Connolly whose close range strike gave ex Glens keeper Ally Semple no chance.

Glens were unlucky not to double their lead shortly afterwards. A powerful long range dipping effort by McKernon looked to be a goal from the moment it left his foot, however the Cumnock goalkeeper Ally Semple managed to acrobatically tip the ball over the bar.

Glens continued to dominate possession playing some neat football which was a joy to watch at times, and created numerous chances. Following a Glens corner, the ball was only half cleared to Ryan McChesney who picked out the unmarked McKernon on the edge of the box with a neat pass, McKernon then avoided the challenge of Cumnock full back Steven Crawford before advancing into the penalty box and drilling a powerful low shot that Semple could only parry into the path of Cammy Marlow who slotted the ball into the net however he was adjudged to be in an offside position by the linesman.

Following a Cumnock corner, a quick Glens counter attack saw Adam Strachan release the onrushing Jamie McGeoghan who had ran the full length of the pitch, however his attempted lob over Semple with his weaker left foot was easily caught. A disappointing first half for the home side was to be compounded by a red card for debutant Kieran Downs. His wild lunge on Glens defender Jamie McGeoghan saw him dismissed much to the displeasure of the home support.

Glens eventually added the goal that their play deserved in the 42nd minute.  Kinney released Mick Wardrope on the edge of the right hand side of the box, and although the midfielder was well placed to have a strike, he unselfishly picked out Adam Strachan with a floated cross, and Strachan made no mistake, taking a touch to compose himself before slotting the ball past Semple with a low finish that hit the inside of the post before going into the back of the net.

In an entertaining finale to the first half Cumnock came close to pulling one back in the 44th minute. A through ball left striker Paul Quinn one on one with Glens goalkeeper Brian McGarrity and after rounding the keeper, his shot was weak which allowed it to be cleared on the line by McGeoghan to deny a certain goal.. The action for the half still wasn’t finished as Adam Strachan should have really have scored his second in first half stoppage time, however his close range effort was fired well over. H/T Cumnock 0 Glens 2

The second half followed a similar pattern of play with the Glens continuing to dominate the bulk of the possession and creating numerous chances with McGarrity in the Glens goal being seldom tested.

Following a neat passage of play by the visitors, midfielder Mick Wardrope’s first time drilled shot went narrowly wide of the post. Another neat move from the visitors this time involving Strachan, Kinney and Marlow, saw Kinney releasing Marlow into a great goalscoring position however the keeper did well to tip his powerful left hand shot past the post.

A misjudgement by Cumnock defender James Lundie provided striker Alain Kinney with a golden opportunity however his attempted lob over Semple went well over the bar. Kinney came closer shortly afterwards with the games final chance however although his curling shot from the edge of the penalty box had Semple beaten, the ball hit the inside of the post before being cleared to safety. KIRKIE CUP KO FOR GLENAFTON

Scottish Junior Cup 3rd round

  • Saturday 22nd November, Guy’s Meadow, Cumbernauld

KIRKINTILLOCH ROB ROY 2 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 (1)

Last season’s Scottish Junior Cup finalists Glenafton fell at the 3rd round to Kirkintilloch Rob Roy who although had went in at the break a goal down overran their Premier Division opponents with a scintillating second half display that saw them scoring two goals within a host of chances.

With play-maker Jamie McKernon unavailable for selection Michael Wardrope made a return to Glenafton’s midfield which was bolstered with striker Aaron Connolly falling back to play wide on the right with Alain Kinney on his own up front.

The visitors were first to threaten after Alan Cairns combined well with Adam Strachan down the left before whipping the ball into the goal mouth where Kinney’s header was blocked by Martin Brogan. Glens were enjoying the better of possession but chances were thin on the soft ground before Aaron Connolly’s angled shot from the right side of the box was diverted behind by Dan McKenzie for a corner kick. Connolly’s kick was headed clear to the edge of the box where it was met by Cameron Marlow and lashed for goal, taking a wicked deflection before nestling in the net and leaving keeper Johnnie Murdoch rooted to the spot to put the Glens ahead on 11 minutes.

Cammy Marlow's shot ends in the net

Five minutes later Rabs first effort of note originated from a Gary McMenamin free-kick from the left flank and floated to the back post where Ryan McChesney was forced to concede a corner, which was quickly followed by another corner kick also cleared by McChesney. The visitors broke up-field where Marlow switched play to Strachan wide on the left to instantly release the overlapping Cairns for the full back to drive into the box and cut the ball across the face of goal, but just out the reach of the incoming Kinney and keeper Murdoch was relieved to watch it slip beyond his back post.

Adam Strachan and Paul Finnegan

Glenafton with their goal advantage continued to hold the upper hand in a tense affair and were winning the majority of set pieces, none of which however resulted in the keeper being tested. Strachan and Connolly switched flanks for a spell and yet chances from open play were rare.

Cameron Marlow

Chris Duff was involved in both the half chances the hosts fashioned. The first saw him fire wide of target from close range while under pressure from Connolly and the second, just before the break, ended with keeper Brian McGarrity snatching the ball from his feet.

HT Rob Roy 0 Glens 1

The visitors forced an early corner which was cleanly clutched by Murdoch. Five minutes later the home side responded with a flurry of corners that increased in potency. The first headed past his own post by Craig Menzies, the second cleared off the line by Wardrope before Barr’s attempt to bury the rebound was deflected wide; the third headed from under the bar by Jamie McGeoghegan and the ball drilled back into a ruck of players by Chris Duff, where it struck a leg and looped over the head of McGarrity and into the net to level the tie on 54 minutes.

The Rabs went on the rampage, aided by the Glens surrendering possession cheaply on numerous occasions, to create chance after chance. Duff set up Stephan Aitken only to be denied by a brave McGarrity diving at his feet and pushing the ball wide of target. Former Cumnock midfielder Garry McMenamin cracked a shot from 20 yards which McGarrity held well in difficult conditions. McChesney then made a great sliding tackle deep in the box to steal the ball from the feet of Aitken. Another defence splitting ball was gathered by Duff and with Dan Orsi close on his tail the striker was pushed wide but still managed to engineer a shot at goal which seemed net bound before McGarrity launched himself to somehow push the ball round the post. A minute later the keeper could nothing to prevent Scott Upton, in acres of space, from picking his spot and bullet a diving header from close range into the net to put the Rabs ahead with just over an hour gone.

Shell-shocked Glens responded a minute later. Marlow gathered the ball in the box and warded off McKenzie and Brogan before firing for goal only for the advancing Murdoch to save well. Midway through the half Duff picked out McMenamin in the box and as the midfielder went to pull the trigger a brave sliding tackle from Cairns and mop up by McGarrity cleared the danger. Ryan Tiffney carved out another good chance only for his shot to sail wide of target.

Glens brought on young Klark Thomson for Orsi and soon after striker Patrick Walker for Cairns. The visitors earned a couple of free kicks and again struggled to make the most of them.

With 10 minutes to go Tiffney had a great chance to kill off the tie after being presented with a free run on goal but again McGarrity came to the rescue by rushing from his goal and forcing the striker to clip the ball narrowly over the bar. A life-line for the Glens and Strachan won a corner of the visitors only for it to be cleared at the near post by McMenamin. At the other end Tiffney fired a ferocious shot from the right hand side of the box only for the airborne McGarrity to pull off his save of the match by tipping the ball over the bar.

In the closing minutes Glens replaced Wardrope with Michael Reilly as visitors pressed for a late equaliser and it nearly came in the last minute of regulation time. Strachan’s cross from wide on the left was headed down by Barr and Walker’s attempt to drill the loose ball home from 10 yards was blocked by Carter. With the ball now spinning in the air and Thomson was first to react and the young midfielder somehow managed to turn on one foot and hook the ball goalward only for Murdoch to get down low and push the ball round the post.

The resultant corner-kick was cleared up and a free-kick win soon after sailed after the bar. Fittingly the last chance fell to Rob Roy and substitute Dom O’Hallaran although his low angled shot beat man-of-the-match McGarrity it sneaked past the keeper’s far post. FT Rob Roy 2 Glens 1

Glens v Rabs: Scottish Head-to-Head

aa_RobRoyGlenafton_ScottishCup

Glenafton continues this season’s Scottish Junior Cup campaign with a 3rd round tie against Kirkkintilloch Rob Roy. The game will take place at Guy’s Meadow home of Cumbernauld United where the Rabs are currently ground sharing.

GlensRobRoy19621961/62: The two sides have met four times in the Scottish Junior Cup , the first of which was in the 1961/62 semi-final at Rugby Park. This was the first time the Glens had reached this stage of the competition , while at that time the Rabs had won the trophy twice and been runners-up three times. Kirkintilloch’s keeper McLeod was in sparkling form and kept the Glens forwards at bay and the Rabs triumphed by  a single goal and went on to win the trophy for a third time after defeating Renfrew in the final. The Glens reached the final for the first time the following season only to lose out to Irvine Meadow.

1980/81  The two sides faced each other in the 1980 by which time the Rabs had finished in runners-up spot a further twice (1968/69 , 1976/77). Glens triumphed in a marathon tie coming out on top 2-1 in the 2nd replay after two goal-less draws, only to fall in the quarter-final away to Pollok.

GlenaftonRobRoy_Scot200506

DJ heads home the opener

2005/06: Twenty years passed before the Glens and Rabs faced each other, the New Cumnock side having by then reached the final three years running in the ’90s including winning the trophy in 1992/93 for the first time in the club’s history.  In a close fought 3rd round tie in a monsoon at Loch Park the visitors appeared to have taken an early lead only to be denied by an offside flag. Darren Johnstone head the home side ahead 7 minutes before the break and Stuart Gauley poked home the equaliser 7 minutes after the restart. Midway through the second half Stevie Agnew stroked the ball beyond Rabs keeper Scott McNab to score what proved to be the winner.  The Glens were humbled at home by Kirkcaldy YM in the next round.

2014/2015: Tomorrow the two sides meet for the fifth time in the Scottish Junior Cup with Glenafton as last season’s finalists and here’s looking forward to another thrilling installment. Glens and Rabs last met in a Premier Division clash at Loch Park last season with goals from Cameron Marlow (below) and Findlay Frye giving the home side a narrow 2-1 win.

Stagecoach Western Super League Premier Division : Match 8

  • Saturday 15th November, Loch Park, New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 0 (0)

AUCHINLECK TALBOT 2  (0)

A minute’s silence was observed prior to kick off as a mark of respect for young Nathan McSeveney from Cumnock who lost his life after a tragic accident at the end of the Scotland and Ireland game at Celtic Park on Friday night. Nathan was a close friend of Glens’ midfielder Darren McGill and the thoughts of everyone at Glenafton Athletic are with Nathan’s family and friends at this sad time.

For Nathan

For Nathan

There was to be no repeat of the recent Ardagh Cup final between the two sides when Glenafton outplayed their opponents for long spells of the game with fine fast flowing football. Talbot were determined not to give the Glens the same freedom of the park and the first half proved to be scrappy affair with play interspersed by free kicks and devoid of any real clear cut chances.

The visitors earned an early corner kick which was headed over the bar by Graham Wilson. On 8 minutes the same player from the corner of the penalty box tried to curl a shot into the top corner only for former Talbot keeper Brian McGarrity to rise and clutch the ball comfortably.

At the other end, a minute later,  Adam Strachan from tight on the left flank cut the ball inside to Aaron Connolly who rolled it on its way to Jamie McKernon for the midfielder to thunder a shot from 30 yards out which was well held by keeper Andy Leishman. It was the same outcome soon after when Connolly cut in from the right before trying his luck from 25 yards.

Adam Strachan's acrobatics

Adam Strachan’s acrobatics

On 14 minutes McKernon switched play with a cross field pass to Strachan who killed the ball with style on the left hand touchline and although he skipped past Willie Lyle into the box with ease, centre-back Mark Campbell was on hand to bring the Glens attack to an end on the bye-line. Six minutes later Craig McCracken was fortunate to stay on the park after a wild lunge on Cameron Marlow, certainly the offences that earned a flurry of yellow cards later in the game appeared tame in comparison.

Alain Kinny gets the jump on Martin Mcgoldrick

Keir Milliken’s run down the left was mopped up by the Glens’ defence and McGarrity’s clearance was picked up by Alain Kinney who made good progress down the left before clipping the ball across the face of goal for Connolly but again the impressive Campbell came to the rescue with a clearing header. Back came Glens and Strachan rolled the ball from the dead-ball line for Alan Cairns to cross into a crowded box where Marlow trapped the ball, turned and fired only for his shot to be blocked by Lyle and eventually cleared by McCracken.

"Eyes up"

“Eyes up”

The home side continued to press and another Cairns cross into the box was confidently clutched from the head of Kinney by Leishman. Daniel Orsi’s persistence down the right won the Glens a corner-kick which was missed by all and sundry in the box and the chance gone.

A minute before the break a Talbot corner-kick caused greater concern in the Glens box with Jamie McGeoghegan forced to bullet a header past his own post preventing Martin McGoldrick from bulleting a header into the net. Although Campbell won the aerial battle at the back post for the follow-up corner McGarrity pulled off a fine save to ensure the sides went in level at the break. H/T Glens 0 Talbot 0

McGarrity was called into action immediately after the re-start although it seemed to be a case of being in the right place at the right time as Dwayne Hyslop’s close range effort cannoned off the Glens keeper’s chest and the ball scrambled cleared. Nevertheless it heralded the start of a sustained period of pressure from Auchinleck with the home side pegged back deep in their own half. Two minutes later from a Talbot free-kick, the keeper bravely punched the ball from the head of Campbell who was proving to be a thorn in the Glens side, both in defence and attack.

Mark Campbell and Aaron Connolly

Yet another free-kick saw Ryan McChesney beat Campbell in the air to partially clear the ball and then McGeoghegan come out on top against McGoldrick. Talbot recovered the ball and Milliken on the right whipped it to the back post where Campbell got the better of McChesney in the air but not off McGoldrick who crouched to cleanly clasp the ball.

Some respite for the hosts as Craig Menzies and Orsi combined down the right before Gordon Pope made a timely clearance. Orsi gathered the resultant throw-in at the near post but McGoldrick blocked and cleared his attempt to feed Connolly. Back came Talbot and Menzies’ outstretched leg prevented Wilson’s pass from setting up Millken with a free run to goal. On 59 minutes the visitors’ pressure produced the goal that was on the cards. Leishman launched the ball upfield where it was met by the head of Wilson before arriving at Keir Milliken, who while leaning back on his right foot calmly and precisely lobbed the ball over the head of the advancing McGarrity and into the net with his left.

Glenafton responded with their first meaningful attack of the half. Strachan streaked down the left before knocking the ball to Kinney deep in the box, the striker taking a touch or two before driving a low angled shot from the corner of the six yard box that was diverted past the post by the feet of Leishman. The big keeper then gathered the resultant corner without a challenge.

On 68 minutes Talbot’s penalty claim for handball were waved away and a minute later McGarrity pulled of a stunning save from Campbell’s close range header. From the resultant corner the keeper was clearly impeded by Wilson at the back post and the whistle blown before the striker’s header hit the inside of the other post.

Glens responded through Orsi down the right who laid the ball off to Connolly and in a flash he fired it across field to Strachan hugging the left touch line his cross back into the box was met by Kinney as and although the header was on target it lacked the power to trouble Leishman. Another determined run down the right by Orsi ended with his cross into the box being intercepted by the head of Lyle which had Leishman stretching high to prevent the ball dipping into the top corner of the net.

With 15 minutes to go both sides made changes with Glens bringing on Patrick Walker for Alan Cairns and Talbot replacing Dwayne Hyslop with former Glenafton striker David Gormley. Five minutes later the home side brought on former Talbot striker Michael Reilly for Daniel Orsi and the visitors replaced James Latta with Colin Spence.

McKernon’s shot from the corner of the 18 yard box whizzed wide of Leishman’s post and Walker’s drive from the edge of the box was gathered by Leishman. In between times, at the other end, Wilson’s header from Gormley’s cut back sailed over the bar.

Graham Wilson slots home the second

Graham Wilson slots home the second

The home side’s hopes of salvaging a point dissipated with 5 minutes to go after a clever touch by Gormley outfoxed the Glens defence and his disguised pass released Graham Wilson with the freedom to pick his spot and drill the ball beyond McGarrity. The goalscorer replaced with Mark Shankland straight after.

With two minutes to go McGeoghegan’s free kick into a crowded box was flicked on by Reilly only for Leishman to react quickly and block with both feet and Pope clear the danger. In time added on McGarrity made a comfortable save from Spence’s effort . FT Glens 0 Auchinleck 2

Troon 3 Glenafton 3

Stagecoach Western Super League Premier Division : Match 7

  • Saturday 8th November, Portand Park, Troon

TROON 3 (1)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 3  (2)

Prior to kick off a minute’s silence was observed as an act of Remembrance,  simply and sincerely.

aa_a_silence01

The game started in lively fashion with a Troon attack repelled in the opening minute and Glenafton’s response mopped up by Dean Keenan at the edge of his own penalty box. The central defender drove forward before clipping a peach of a defence splitting pass down the left flank for Mick McCann to hunt down and with David Gillies in support earned the home side the first corner of the game. Keenan duly delivered the ball to back post where Gillies’ downward header found the back of the net with some ease, to put Troon ahead on 2 minutes.

David Gillies heads home the opener

Five minutes later Adam Strachan exploded down the left flank to the bye line and whipped the ball across the face of goal beyond the reach of the keeper Darren Johnson only for Alain Kinney’s flashing header to be headed clear by Gareth Armstrong ( no, not ‘Bo’). Strachan continued to glide across the wet surface and another blistering run down the left to the  bye-line ended with the keeper pushing the ball past for a corner-kick which was won in the air by Jamie McGeoghegan and cleared by former Glens defender Martin Ure.

In his next attack a change of plan saw Strachan cut in from the left and ghost past a couple of black and blue shirts before unleashing a shot from 25 yards which, at full stretch, was pushed round the post by Johnston. Again Kinney won the aerial battle for the corner-kick and his glancing header at the near post whizzed inches wide of the back post.

alain Kinney goes close

alain Kinney goes close

Some respite for the home side following a neat touch by McCann in the middle of the park to release Stevie Wilson and after tearing down the right flank his cross for the incoming McCann was pushed away low at the near post by keeper Brian McGarrity and the loose ball cleared by Craig Menzies at the expense of a corner. Keenan’s execution failing to match that of the one that led to the opener.

Back on the front foot the visitors earned a free kick deep in the Troon half after Ure brought down Cameron Marlow. The Glens midfielder wasted no time and his quickly taken kick caught the home defence off guard as he rolled the ball into the path of Alain Kinney who burst into the box to drill a low angled shot beyond the advancing Johnson to level the match with 15 minutes gone.

Celebrations as Glens level

Celebrations as Glens level

Like the rain pelting down on Portland Park, play was relentless flowing from end-to-end without any further clear cut chances created by either side. Kinney and Aaron Connolly completed a neat one-two allowing the latter to dart into the left hand corner of the box beyond the Troon defence only for the outrushing keeper to slide perfectly and clutch the ball from the striker’s feet. While, at the other end a timely tackle deep in the box by Craig Menzies on McCann yielded another corner for Troon that was punched well clear by McGarrity.

It's raining goals !

It’s raining goals !

On 37 minutes the tide turned Glenafton’s way after McGeoghegan broke down a Troon attack and picked out Jamie McKernon in the middle of the park. His stunning cross-field pass was killed by Strachan tight on the left flank from where he darted infield before slipping the ball to Alain Kinney. The striker with his back to goal and sandwiched between two opponents wheeled and lashed an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box into the rigging. H/T Troon 1 Glens 2

Glenafton began the second half in determined fashion and it was midfielder McKernon pulling the strings beginning with a 25 yard thunderbolt that whizzed wide of the post. He later picked out Strachan and in turn he fed Daniel Orsi, who had temporarily switched from the right to left flank, and incredibly his cut back across face of goal saw Kinney, Marlow and Connolly in sequence all denied by tackles from a trio of Troon defenders.

Adam Strachan

Adam Strachan

On the hour mark a combination of excellent build up play and clinical finishing doubled the visitors lead. Strachan hypnotised a defender before drilling a diagonal ball to Kinney and in a flash with a classy touch of the outside of his boot diverted the ball into the path of Aaron Connolly to present him with a free run into the box. The striker picked his moment and just as the back-tracking Neil McGowan closed in from the rear and keeper Johnson raced from his line to narrow the angle he drilled the ball low and hard from 15 yards into the corner of the net.

Aaron makes it 3-1

Aaron makes it 3-1

Glens were  now well on top with the mobile McKernon feeding Orsi and Strachan down either flanks as the visitors pressed for a fourth, only for the Troon defence to hold firm. The home side were only seen as an attacking force in flashes and in 70 minutes they won a free-kick 30 yards out. Keenan stepped up seemingly to loft the ball into the box but instead attempted to curl one into the top corner, only for McGarrity to quickly readjust and get both hands to it.

With 15 minutes to go Glenafton introduced Michael Wardrope for Orsi and soon after Darren McGill for Marlow. In between times Kinney escaped the clutches of Armstrong on the half-way line and stormed his way forward to the edge of the box where the tireless Keenan timed his tackle perfectly.

On 80 minutes McGill, on the right, slipped the ball to Connolly who in turn found Strachan on the left before continuing his run into the box. Strachan skipped past Armstrong before squaring the ball across the six yard box where Kinney’s effort was blocked by Keenan and Connolly’s attempt to net the rebound crashed off the underside of the bar. Instead of being three ahead, the deficit was cut to one some three minutes later. Wilson cut inside from the right and rolled the ball to substitute Tony Murphy on the outskirts of the box who casually lobbed the ball high over the Glens defence into the six yard box where Mick McCann enjoyed space and time to pick his spot with a glancing header.

Glens brought on Patrick Walker for Connolly, however the momentum was now all with the home side as they dug deep for the equaliser. McCann engineered a great chance but his lob over McGarrity went well wide. With three minutes to go another dangerous ball into the box was headed clear by Ryan McChesney as Moore waited to pounce only for former Glenafton player Murphy to gather the ball at the edge of the box but his drive sailed over the bar.

Stevie's late leveller

Stevie’s late leveller

In the 4th minute of added time Troon won a free kick in the centre circle and in a last throw of the dice Keenan launched the ball high into the sardine-packed box over the heads of all and sundry which landed kindly at the feet of Stevie Wilson who with the deftest of touches killed the ball and guided it home from close range to secure a share of the points.Troon 3 Glenafton 3
