Glenafton 2 Cumnock 3

Stagecoach Western Super League Premier Division : Match 13

Saturday 3rd January, Loch Park , NewCumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2 (0)

CUMNOCK JUNIORS 3 (1)

Glenafton welcomed neighbours as 2015 first footers to Loch Park and also welcomed back midfielder Jamie McKernon to the starting line-up with striker Alain Kinney taking a place on the bench. The marked contrast between the strong sunshine and the cold air the engulfed Loch Park was equalled by the contrast of a scrappy first half and incident packed second.

Cumnock who made the more purposeful start took the lead on 9 minutes after an attempted clearance in the box by Craig Menzies fell kindly for Robert Love who quickly engineered a fine flashing shot and although keeper Brian McGarrity had appeared to push the ball wide of the far post it deflected off defender Jamie McGeoghegan and into his own net.

Although the home side had earned a couple of set-pieces in dangerous places , all of which failed to test the keeper, they were struggling to create any chances from open play until the 19th minute. Adam Strachan ghosted down the left flank and although his cut-back across the face of goal was cleared by the head of Stephen Low the loose ball was met by Michael Wardrope at the outskirts of the box and his scorching shot was pushed over the bar courtesy of an acrobatic save from Ally Semple. Again the resultant corner-kick was mopped up by the ‘Nock defence and soon after Semple comfortably saved a McGill free-kick from 25 yards out.

Glenafton continued to press for the equaliser but still their only rewards were what proved to be non-threatening corner kicks while Cumnock always looked dangerous on the break down both flanks with their best chance of adding to their lead coming 10 minutes before the break. A clever pass from Ray Montgomerie deep in the Glen’s box set Love free to cut the ball back from the dead-ball line which was headed clear at the near post by Ryan McChesney as Montgomerie waited to put the finishing touches to the one-two. From the resultant corner kick Stephen Low came out on top in the aerial battle but his header flashed inches over McGarrity’s bar.

Montgomerie then released Ryan Nisbet down the left flank and with he a clutch of defenders blocking his path to goal he fired a speculative shot from a corner of the box that was clutched comfortably by McGarrity. H/T Glens 0 Cumnock 1

Just before the break Cumnock replaced the injured Adam Lowe with Chris McKnight and brought on trialist Duches for Nisbet at the interval while the hosts brought on Alain Kinney for Wardrope and Daniel Orsi for Menzies.

The visitors started brightly and McChesney made a crucial intervention in the box to cut out Ronald’s pass to Love and soon after another ‘Nock moved ended with Tony Low trying his luck from distance only for the ball to sail harmlessly over the bar.As the half progressed yellow cards were being produced at regular intervals as the intensity and the tempo of the game increased and tempers were being kept in check.

On 55 minutes a Kinney drive from 30 yards was well held by Semple and a minute later the keeper denied the striker again, clutching his header from a corner kick. Glens continued to press and Semple sprinted off his line to dive at the feet of Kinney and within a flash the loose ball was played back into the box and landed at the feet of Kinney again and his low angled shot from 12 yards was brilliantly block by the outstretched leg of Semple.

The sucker punch was delivered on the hour mark. Love bombed down the right flank and clipped a wicked ball into the six yard box and although it was missed by the incoming Montgomerie it rolled into the path of Tony Low and his low drilled shot beat keeper McGarrity and was then diverted into goal by Ray Montgomerie. Claims for offside were waved away and Cumnock doubled their lead.

Glens responded well and three minutes later a rasping free-kick by Strachan from 25 yards out was tipped over the bar by Semple and as the home side continued to press a wicked ball by McKernon from wide on the right was headed wide by Kinney. A low drilled shot from Strachan then whizzed past the post.

Another Glens’ attack was broken down on the half way line McKnight played a one-two with Adam Loew before driving into the penalty box and squaring the ball for the incoming Robert Love who gave a defender the slip before firing for goal only for the ball to cannon off the leg of the out-rushing McGarrity and loop high over the keeper’s head into the gaping net. Cumnock now 3-0 up after 74 minutes.

Glenafton replaced defender Alan Cairns with Chris Meikle and to their credit picked themselves up and went in search of some consolation and ten minutes later they pulled one back. Connolly’s shot from 25 yard outs was pushed round the post by Semple at full stretch. The keeper’s mistimed his two-fisted punch at the resultant corner kick and the ball barely made it out the penalty box where McChesney played a big part in returning the ball into the mix where it fell for Alain Kinney to blast home from the corner of the six yard box. The visitors’ offside appeals promptly dismissed.

The home side’s thoughts of consolation turned to those of salvation when they scored again on 86 minutes. A corner kick was headed clear to the right hand corner of the penalty box and in an instant Orsi lashed the ball low and hard back to from where it came to connect with the outstretched foot of Aaron Connolly to slip the ball beyond Semple rooted to his line.

Glens pressed for the equaliser and four minutes into added time Strachan’s ball from the left picked out Kinney on the penalty spot who slipped the ball to Connolly who in turn slipped past two defenders to set up a shot at goal only for the Semple to pull off a wonder save and secure the points for Cumnock. Michael Wardrope

Glenafton made one change to the starting eleven that had drawn with Irvine Meadow, with Jamie McKernon failing to recover from a bad challenge in that game and replaced by Darren McGill.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the play in the opening half and took a deserved lead after McGill’s glancing header from a corner kick crashed off the junction off the back-post and crossbar . The loose ball was quickly gathered by Alain Kinney and rolled back to Michael Wardrope at the corner of the 18 yard box and his chip into the danger deceived defender and keeper before the ball nestled in the net.

The keeper showed better form and outwitted the Glens attack coming out on top in a number of one-on-ones. The visitors paid dearly for the missed chances as Hurlord drew level a minute before the break after Paul McKenzie was dispossessed on the edge of the box but the ball fell kindly for Danny Mitchell to blast the ball home.

Stagecoach Western Super League Premier Division : Match 11

Saturday 20th December, Loch Park , NewCumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2 (1)

IRVINE MEADOW 2 (1)

A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off as a mark of respect for former Glenafton Athletic President and supporter Tam Wilson, who passed away this week.

Good Shepherd saves Meadow from a mowing

Irvine Meadow goalkeeper Graeme Shepherd made a handful of stunning saves throughout the match and the visitors scored a goal in time added on to secure a share of the points in an enthralling encounter at Loch Park.

Glenafton were first to threaten after former Meadow player Adam Strachan won a corner kick which was taken by Jamie McKernon and from six yards out the ball headed just wide of target by Strachan. Meadow responded with a free kick from wide on the left which forced keeper Brian McGarrity to leave his line and jump at full stretch to divert the ball from Michael Keenan stealing in at the back post.

The home side continued to press and excellent overlapping play by Craig Menzies down the right wing saw his cross headed cleared by Grant Evans and soon after the central defender also fended off Kinney’s challenge after good build up play by McKernon.

Strachan then cut in from the left and fed the ball to Cameron Marlow, lurking in the ‘D’ of the penalty box, who quickly turned to wrong foot Keenan before lashing a low drive which was turned round the post by Shepherd at full stretch. From the resultant corner-kick Jamie McGeoghegan’s header fell for Alain Kinney deep in the six yard box who managed to squeeze the ball between the keeper and his defenders on the line to put the Glens ahead on 5 minutes.

On 10 minutes Gary McCann weaved his way down the right flank and cut deep into the box only to be foiled by McGarrity bravely diving at his feet to push the ball wide. McCann’s corner was met by a glancing header from Marc Twaddle at the near post and the ball slammed home at the back post by Willie Sawyers.

Glenafton recovered quickly and with McKernon pulling the strings in the middle of the park the home side pegged Meadow deep into their own half. Back-to-back corners were cleared by the visitors’ defence with Evans in the thick of the action. Kinney caught Twaddle sleeping to beat the offside trap but the back tracking Staunton robbed the striker as he cut in on goal.

At the other end Ryan McChesney cut out a wicked ball whipped into the box by Mark McLennan, with Sawyers the target, and then mopped up the resultant corner kick. Midway through the half McCann skinned the Glens defence and his cut-back from deep in the box picked out Sawyers in acres of space only for his shot to lack the pace and direction to worry McGarrity.

Ten minutes later Kinney released Strachan down the left and after jinking his way into the box past a sea of blue shirts he squared the ball for the incoming Kinney but the striker pulled his effort from 12 yards out wide of target. On 35 minutes Kinney was the architect again. He played an exquisite one-two on the outskirts of the box with Connolly before bursting into the box and with McCann hard on his heels fired for goal from the corner of the six yard box, only for Shepherd to stand tall and make a wonderful one-hand saved that ended with the ball rolling along the face of the empty net and out of play.

The corner kick was only partially cleared before Alan Cairns whipped the ball to the back post where Keenan beat Connolly and McChesney to the ball and Twaddle blocked Kinney’s attempt to bury the rebound. In the closing minutes of the half Kinney rolled an inch-perfect ball down the left for Connolly to chase and cut across the face of goal and create panic in the Meadow box.

Shepherd saves from Michael Wardrope

First, Strachan’s effort was blocked by Twaddle sending the ball spinning to the other side of goal forcing Shepherd then to race to the corner of his six yard box and pull off a stunning save from Michael Wardrope’s powerful angled drive and finally the recovering Twaddle blocked Marlow’s attempt to net the loose ball. H/T Glens 1 Meadow 1

Glens started brightly with Wardrope picking up a Marlow pass into the box only for his angled shot to sail over Shepherd’s head and the crossbar. Five minutes into the new half and Meadow were reduced to 10 men after play maker McKernon, who minutes before had been subject of a crude tackle by Evans, was caught by the studs of Keenan earning the big midfielder a straight red card. Five minutes later Connolly was shown yellow for a late tackle on Shepherd, the keeper coming out on top in the race for a long ball into the box.

Craig Menzies in control

The home side continued to press and earned a couple of corner-kicks that were dutifully cleared by the Meadow defence. On the hour mark a McKernon blast from outside the box appeared net-bound only for Staunton to head the ball over his own bar. McChesney was inches off making a clean contact with the resultant corner-kick before this too was cleared.

Although having much less of the ball Meadow still looked dangerous on the break and Menzies, on top form, did well to mop up the pieces as a move between McCann and Sawyers broke down. At the other end Cairns picked out Kinney in the box who killed the ball brilliantly with his chest and as he tried to poke the ball home from six yards Shepherd managed to get a slight block and win Staunton enough time to clear the danger. Back up the field and Ryan Deas’ finish didn’t match the build-up play allowing McGarrity to make a comfortable save.

Another Glens' corner is cleared

On 70 minutes Kinney sandwiched between Staunton and Evans was barged to the ground by the latter as the Glens striker tried to set himself up at the edge of the six yard box to head home Connolly’s cross. Evans escaped with a yellow card while Kinney’s spot-kick skimmed inches wide of the Shepherd’s right hand post, which the keeper appeared to have well covered. The ball was quickly dispatched up-field and McCann missed an opportunity to rub sea-salt in the home side’s wounds. Glens brought on Scott Adam for Alain Kinney and later Jamie McKernon had to hobble off and was replaced by Darren McGill.

Back on the front foot the home side pushed for a later winner only for Shepherd to pull off another two great saves – the first from a thunderous shot by Scott Adam at the edge of the box and the second a low angled drive from inside the box by Marlow. However, a minute from time the keeper could do nothing to stop a pile-driver from 22 yards out , through a packed penalty box, by midfielder Michael Wardrope.

There was to a be a sting in the tail when Meadow, with 10 out 10 leagues wins under their belt, won a free-kick at the edge of the box deep in stoppage time. Substitute Mark Thomson’s effort appeared to take a wicked deflection of the Glenafton wall before the ball settled in the corner of the net. F/T Glens 2 Meadow 2

Tom Wilson , RIP.

aa_tomwilson05It was with great sadness that Glenafton Athletic learned of the sudden passing of Tam Wilson , a lifelong supporter that devoted so much of his time to the club. It is through the Glens that I have known Tam for over 20 years and like everyone else that knew him, I understood how much this club meant to him, through thick and thin.

Everyone connected with the club knows of Tam’s past involvement with the Glens, and his passion and support for the team. As club President he enjoyed one of his proudest days on the open-top bus journey through the streets of New Cumnock in 1993 with the Glenafton team that had just been crowned Scottish Junior Cup Winners. A familiar face, home and away, on match day and at Loch Park helping out when he could, Tam will be sorely missed.

On behalf of the supporters, players, management and committee we send our deepest condolences to Phoebe, family and friends at this sad time.

Club Secretary, John Stewart

Glenafton 4 Clydebank 1

Stagecoach Western Super League Premier Division : Match 10

  • Saturday 6th December, Loch Park , NewCumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 4(1)

CLYDEBANK 1 (1)

The first Saturday of December proved to be a dull, dreich and damp day and brought with it difficult conditions for playing and watching football. Nevertheless both sides served up an entertaining match with the emphasis very much on attacking play.

Clydebank created the first chance in 5 minutes after a quick throw-in released Paterson tight on the left touch line to whip a ball across the face of the goal which by-passed a clutch of attackers and defenders before falling for Ian Gold at the back post only for his attempt to guide the ball into the net blocked by the feet of keeper Brian McGarrity and mopped up by Adam Strachan. The former Bankie midfielder then darted his way to the half way line before launching the ball up-field which created a moment of panic in the visitors defence as the keeper Liam Campbell rushed to the edge of the box only for his defender to boot the ball high in the air which eventually fell for Cameron Marlow but his hook shot from a difficult angle went wide of the empty net.

Brian McGarrity blocks Ian Gold

Minutes later Strachan stole the ball in his own half and glided down the left before picking out Aaron Connolly and his cross-field ball was gathered by Michael Wardrope wide on the right who quickly fired the ball to the near post where it was held well by Campbell as Marlow and Connolly waited to pounce. The keeper then denied Alain Kinney, getting down low to smother the striker’s low drilled shot from 20 yards out. Glens continued to press and Ryan McChesney’s header from a corner kick was bulleted down into the box where Marlow, with his back to goal, swivelled and fired for goal only for Campbell to come out on top with an instinctive two handed save and the loose ball cleared to safety.

Cammy goes close

Cammy goes close

The home side made the breakthrough on 16 minutes after the Bankies had broken down a Glens attack on the half way line only to cheaply surrender possession with a slack pass that was snapped up by Kinney who clipped a perfectly weighted pass for Aaron Connolly to chase down and with three defenders at his back he kept his cool to burst into the box and slip the ball past the advancing Campbell and into the net for his 10th goal of the season.

Aaron and Adam celebrate

Aaron and Adam celebrate

The game entered a period where chances were equally shared all of which were handled well by the respective keepers. Midway through the half McGarrity clutched Clydebank’s corner kick cleanly and soon after mopped up Joe Andrew’s dangerous cross to the near post in similar fashion. At the other end Jamie McKernon’s drive from distance was held by Campbell and then after some excellent build up play by the Glens the keeper pulled off a stunning one handed save from a vicious Wardrope shot from the edge of the box. The resultant corner kick was only partially cleared and so too the Glens’ second bite at the cherry as the Bankies regained possession and to great effect.

Paterson powered down the left flank and from the half-way line leathered the ball upfield where Andrew displayed great skill and control to kill the ball, shake off a couple of defenders and clip a pass to Jamie Campbell bursting into the left hand side of the box, the midfielder taking a touch before slotting the ball past the out-rushing McGarrity to level the match on 32 minutes.

Jamie Campbell makes it 1-1

Jamie Campbell makes it 1-1

Although the home side won a couple of corner-kicks that were comfortably with Clydebank’s defence it was the visitors that created the best chance before the break. A long ball upfield saw new signing Derek Carcary beat the offside trap and from the right hand corner of the penalty box was unfortunate to see his left footed curled shot slip inches wide of the far post. H/T Glens 1 Bankies 1

Glens kicked-off the second half and within seconds could have easily been a goal down. Bankies recovered the ball and it was quickly dispatched up-field where Carcary killed it expertly on his chest before twisting and turning a couple of defenders and rolling the ball into the path of Andrew only for his shot from 12 yards to whiz past the post. A minute later Paterson gave the Glens defence the slip however his rushed shot, as Craig Menzies closed in, sailed over the bar. Although the visitors continued to press clear cut chances eluded them, and soon the Glens began to see more of the ball.

On 53 minutes Glens replaced Michael Wardrope with Darren McGill and two minutes later they carved out a great chance. Jamie McGeoghegan broke down a Bankie’s attack and picked out McKernon who quickly rolled the ball down the left flank for Strachan and in a flash he skipped his way into the box and slipped the ball back to Marlow only for his angled shot to be blocked by Campbell and the loose ball hooked away as Kinney threatened.
Glens pushed again and on 58 minutes an Alan Cairns run ended with a clumsy tackle from Andrew inside the Bankies half. Strachan lofted the free kick deep into the six yard box and the bounce of the ball appeared to deceive the keeper who could only fumble it and Cameron Marlow was on hand to tap the loose ball home, for his 10th goal of the season.

Cammy puts the Glens in front

Bankies responded with a free kick of their own, taken from the right wing Austin McCann won the header in the crowded box but the ball glanced wide of target. Midway through the half Glens won a corner kick which Strachan played short to McKernon on the edge of the box and in turn he retreated some 15 yards before feeding Cairns. The defender chipped the ball back into the heart of the box where it skimmed off the head of a defender before falling for Cameron Marlow and with space and time in his favour he calmly picked his spot and guided the ball beyond Campbell.

Cammy bags his brace

Cammy bags his brace

A beleaguered Bankies tried to bounce back and brought on fresh legs for Carcary and Andrew. A low powerful drive from Paterson on the right took a deflection in a crowded Glens’ box and the ball skimmed inches wide of the far post.

With 10 minutes to go Connolly careered down the right wing and his cross to the back post was win in the air by Kinney only for his header to end just wide of target. On 85 minutes the striker made way for Scott Adam, making a welcome return to Loch Park, and soon he was in the thick of the action. He gathered the ball on left, just inside the Bankie’s half, and after shaking off a defender or two hit a cross-field pass to pick out Adam Strachan in acres of space. As the home support waited in expectation of Strachan running on to round the keeper, he looked up and lobbed a delightful ball high over the head of Campbell and all it took an age to descend there was only going to be one destination – back of the net; as they say.

In the dying minutes Glens introduced trialist Graeme Ramage, recently released by Bankies, for Aaron Connolly. Bankies had a chance of a late consolation through a determined run down the right by Jamie Campbell. However, his dangerous cross to the back post was punched up into the air McGarrity’s right hand and the falling ball palmed away by his left to deny the incoming striker./T Glens 4 Bankies 1
