Glenafton Athletic were saddened to learn soon before kick-off that striker Mick McCann’s father had passed away. A minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect for Mr McCann and our thoughts go out to Mick and his family at this sad time.
The hosts came close to opening scoring after some neat interplay at the corner of the box ending with Scott Anson whipping the ball into the goalmouth where Sean McKenzie flick goal-bound only for keeper Brian McGarrity to get down low and push the ball round the post for a corner-kick.
The visitors responded through a long-range shot from Ryan Borris that whizzed past the post. Back came Cumnock through a quick break down the right ended and the ball clipped to McKenzie to fire from 18 yards out only for McGarrity to deny the on-loan Ayr United striker again.
A Glens attack down the right was broken down and the ‘Nock defenders began to knock the ball about in short passes before a long ball was played across park only for the alert Darren McGill to intercept , skip past the intended recipient before finding his footing and as other defenders closed in drilled a low powerful shot from 18 yards into the corner of the net before the keeper at full stretch.

Cumnock came within a whisker of drawing level after Anson’s floated free-kick into the box as headed against the box. At the other end Joe Andrew warmed the keeper’s hands with a shot from 20 yards and soon after Alan Cairns repeated the feat. Back up the park and McGarrity finger-tipped a vicious shot over the bar.

The home side were first to threaten after the break but again McGarrity came out on top with a fantastic save with a well-engineered shot from Callum McRobbie. His counterpart Darren Johnstone equalled that save as he leapt to push Ryan McChesney’s goal bound header over the bar. McGarrity replied with another agile save from a close range angled shot from Anson. A flick on by McKenzie was gathered by McRobbie and he looked certain to equalise as he burst into the box only for Cairns (left) to execute a goal saving tackle of the highest order.
With minutes remaining Cumnock appeared to be have been rewarded for their efforts when Paul Burns headed home a free kick from close range only for his celebrations to be cut short after the assistant linesman flagged for an infringement.
