OH DANNY JOY !
Glenafton Athletic faced Pollok in the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup 3rd round at Loch Park yesterday. The two teams have now faced each other seven times in Junior football’s ‘Holy Grail’ which draws Pollok level with Auchinleck as the club the Glens have faced most often in the competition.
Glenafton first faced Pollok some 51 years ago in season 1961/62 at the quarter-final stage at Newlandsfield when the New Cumnock side came out on top with a 2-1 victory. The two sides met each other the following season again in Glasgow, this time in the 5th round, and again the Ayrshire side came out on top with a 1-0 win. In both games Glenafton legend Danny McCulloch, still a regular visitor to Loch Park, scored what proved to be the winning goals.
To mark this occasion Glenafton Athletic were delighted to present Danny with a memento of those memorable games with Pollok. The club would like to thank Mr Jim Gilligan of Pollok F.C. for making the official presentation during the half-time interval. Always the joker, Danny as he stood in front of the nets that he knew so well, said ‘ My eye-sight isn’t what he used to be but I’m glad to see the Glens go in at half-time 1-0 up!
Congratulations Danny
