  • Glenafton win 4-3 penalties

The meeting of the Glens at the Clyde Gateway Stadium went to the wire with the side from New Cumnock at the Gateway to Ayrshire, claiming the spoils in a penalty shoot-out.

Glenafton made one change to the starting eleven that defeated Arthurlie last week with Glen Mitchell rested and Ryan McChesney making a return to the centre of defence after a lengthy absence through injury. Rutherglen, after their tremendous run in the Scottish Junior Cup only to be denied a place in the final by the narrowest of margins, began with former Glenafton defenders Willie Galloway at full back and Andy Ward on the bench.

The visitors were first to threaten when Robbie Robertson punished some slack play and sent Ryan Millar through the middle but his effort went wide of target. Ten minutes later the hosts’ best chance of the half fell to Ross Ballantyne, after good build up play, only for keeper Ally Semple to force his angled shot over the bar.

Soon after Andy Ward came on to replace Brian Eadie who had to leave the park with a badly gashed eye. The big defender’s name was soon in the book and quickly followed by those of McChesney and Robertson.  The cup-tie was evenly matched although goal-scoring chances were thin on the ground. Corner kicks came and went for both sides without causing any real damage, until time added on before the break, when Joe McCalpine’s corner was guided home by Mark McCarry at the near post.  H/T Rutherglen 1 Glenafton 0

Ryan Millar – opens his Glens account

The teams exchanged half chances in the opening encounters of the new half. Semple saved comfortably from McCarry while at the other end Millar’s header went narrowly wide. The visitors stepped up a gear and on 64 minutes the pressure paid off . A quick throw from Craig McEwan was gathered at the goal line by Robertson and cut back for Ryan Millar who took a touch or two before firing past keeper Kevin Bell from 12 yards out to open his account for Glenafton. Both sides introduced fresh legs to try and force a winner and although all were at the heart of half chances – Burke for the home side and Dempster, Armstrong and Colligan for the visitors – the game concluded with no further scoring. F/T Rutherglen 1 Glenafton.

AllySemple01Glenafton gained an early advantage in the shoot-out when Semple saved kicks 2 and 3 to put the visitors 3-1 ahead. Kevin Bell threw his team a life-line with a fine save and with one kick remaining the score was tied at 3-3; up stepped Gareth Armstrong to blast home the winner.

Glenafton won through to the Scottish Cup U19s Final with a hard fought victory over St. Cadoc’s .  The East Renfrewshire side created the best of the chances in the first half but found Glens’ keeper Ryan Dunsmuir in splendid form, keeping the scoreline blank at the break with a number of fine saves.

Glenafton Celebrations

Glenafton Celebrations

Glens started the second in a much more determined fashion and the St. Cadoc goal survived some early pressure. On 58 minutes the team from New Cumnock broke the deadlock with  a stunning strike from 22 yards by Jordan Graham giving the keeper no chance. St. Cadoc’s rallied well but again were defied by Dunsmuir, time and again.

Well done to both sides for serving up an entertaining and competitive cup semi-final. Our commiserations to St. Cadoc’s after such a fine display and congratulations to Glenafton on reaching the Scottish Youth U19s Cup Final.

Saturday 20th April, Dunterlie Park, Barrhead

ARTHURLIE  1 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 4 (2)

Glenafton extended their winning run to six-in-a-row (including four league games) with a convincing win over Arthurlie at Dunterlie to secure another valuable three points and push up to fifth place in the table.

The visitors quickly commandeered the midfield from flank to flank and soon had the home defence on the back foot with the movement of front two of Ross Roberston and Ryan Millar causing all sorts of problems both in the air and on the ground.  On 10 minutes the pressure paid off after Craig McEwan collected the ball deep in his own half and lofted the ball over the heads of two ‘Lie defenders for Millar to give chase down the left flank.  After leaving former Glens’ defender Chris Merrilees for dead he cut the ball back for Jack Steele who took a touch on the penalty spot before his shot was blocked by Mark Blakey to send the ball skyward and the in-rushing Gus Cochrane react quickest to prod the ball home at the post.

Gus Cochrane opens the scoring

Arthurlie’s forward play lacked any real fluency and long balls up the park were mopped up with ease by the Glens’ centre-backs; if Richie McKillen won one header during the game then he won fifty one.  Occasional chances did come their way the best was foiled by McEwan who dispossessed McGregor with a well time tackled and then blocked Steven McKeown’s attempt to bury the rebound.

Midway through the half live-wire Millar burst down the right flank before firing in a cross which had the ‘Lie defence at sixes and sevens and although Cochrane collected the ball it didn’t fall kindly and the chance for a second was lost.  At the other end Craig Potter brought a good run to the bye-line by Kieran Brannon to an end at the expense of a corner kick, however like two others that soon followed to ‘Lie they came to nothing.  On 29 minutes the Glens enjoyed greater success from a corner, earned after having been camped  in the ‘Lie box, when McKenzie’s wicked kick arrived at the back post perfectly for Glen Mitchell to rise above McGregor and bullet home a header  beyond keeper Kevin Macklin.

Arthurlie’s attempts to rally through McGregor and McKeown were snuffed out and back came the visitors with Millar darting down the left and cutting back for McKenzie in the box who jinked through the tightest of gaps between Merrilees and Miller only for Merriman to get a goal saving last ditch touch on the six-yard line. The half drew to a close with Glenafton very much on the front foot and looking the more likely to add to their tally , while the ‘Lie had yet to seriously test keeper Ally Semple. HT Lie 0 Glens 2

Five minutes into the new half Glenafton extended their lead with a glorious worked goal. Cochrane picked up the ball deep in his own half and drove forward with great purpose before releasing Robertson wide on the right who in turn made his way into the box and before Merriman could close him down squared the ball across the face of goal. His target, Millar on the six yard line, with his back to goal and Bonar glued to him back-heeled the ball into the danger area where Danny Mitchell got the jump on Brannon to fire the ball home. Arthurlie’s vehement claims for offside were dismissed and the goal rightly stood.

Cochrane left to hearty applause from the appreciative away support to be replaced by Gareth Campbell .  Meanwhile Arthurlie introduced James Marks and he was soon in the thick of the action and help set up the home team’s best chance freeing Paul Stewart to work his way into the box to power an angled shot which brought out a fine save for Semple; a strong right hand sending the ball across the face of the goal. The keeper then had to be alert to punch the ball from the head of Stewart as ‘Lie enjoyed a period of pressure.

Paul McKenzie, who had taken a knock in the first half, and then later Ryan Miller left to load applause as they were replaced by John Dempster and Gareth Armstrong.

The game was much more even now with chances being exchanged. Steele manoeuvred his way through the midfield before trying to place the ball home only for Macklin to cover well. Marks carved out a good chance but was denied by a brave block from McKillen. With two minutes to go Arthurlie struck a consolation goal after Mark Blakey cut in from the left flank and unleashed an unstoppable shot beyond Semple into the top corner.

A minute into added time Robertson trapped the ball in the centre circle and sold Merriman a dummy before taking McGregor out of play with a perfect pass to pick out Gareth Armstrong in acres of space in the box who calmly wrong footed Macklin before taking another touch and rolling the ball into the gaping net. IRVINE MEADOW  0 (0)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 (0)

Glenafton and Irvine Meadow clashed for the third time this season and ultimately the match was decided by a late John Dempster strike that gave the New Cumnock side three wins out of three over the reigning champions and more importantly three huge league points.

The visitors made the early running with captain Paul McKenzie on a couple of occasions mowing his way through the Meadow midfield. One ended in a trip by Liam McGuinness earning him an early yellow card and a free kick for the Glens that failed to trouble keeper Michael Wardrope.  Ryan Miller then gathered a Craig McEwan throw-in and turned Richie Reeder inside out before cutting the ball across the face of goal which was partially cleared before falling to McKenzie and his shot went wide of target.

Taz mows the Meadow

Meadow’s forward play was less evident with the only threat coming from glimpses of Adam Strachan’s pace down the left flank which ended abruptly when his cut-backs were mopped up by Glen Mitchell and Richie McKillen at the heart of the visitors defence.

Another Glenafton set piece from just outside the box came to nothing. On ten minutes Wardrope rushed to the corner of the box to punch the ball clear from the head of Ross Robertson, the Glens striker left in a heap in the aftermath.  Ten minutes later Jack Steele nicked the ball from the toe of Reeder and released Robertson who then turned Zander Ryan at the edge of the box only for his shot to be blocked and cleared.

Midway through the half McKillen brought a fine run by Strachan to an end at the expense of a corner but the set-piece malaise which enveloped the game continued to prevail as the resultant kick sailed over the bar. Richie Barr tried his luck with a shot from twenty yards out that finished two yards wide of target.

Robertson, scorer of five goals in his last four games, who had never recovered from an earlier knock was replaced by John Dempster . Soon after, McKenzie played Danny Mitchell into the box with Dempster in support but again the Meadow defence stood firm.

Ryan Miller takes on Zander Ryan

At the other end Strachan won a free-kick at the edge of the box but the outcome inevitably sailed high over Semple’s bar and almost over the high wire fence behind his goal. Meadow then enjoyed their best spell of pressure and arguably created the best chance of the half only for Semple to deny Barr through the narrowing the angle and pulling off a fine save at the near post. The home side continued to press and switched Strachan to the right but they could not conjure up any further chances of equal note.

Five minutes before break good build up play down the left from the Glens ended with Dempster working his way into the box and his shot from a tight angle find the side netting. H/T Meadow 0 Glens 0

As in the first half, Glenafton were first to show albeit ably assisted by Meadow. On 48 minutes Miller nicked the ball with ease from Ryan and took a few strides toward goal before unleashing a shot from 22 yards out which whizzed over the bar. Three minutes later the same player capitalised on a slip by Mark Campbell to burst down the left flank before making his way into the box where Ryan made amends for his earlier mishap by dispossessing  the Glens striker with a well-timed tackled; the referee well positioned to wave away penalty claims.

Meadow quickly regained their composure and on 52 minutes were unfortunate not to get their noses in front when Gareth Turner engineered his way behind the visitors back line to drill a shot to which Semple may just have got a touch before the ball cannoned off the post and the keeper then scrambled along the ground to smother the rebound.  The home side continued to press and only a timely intervention by McKenzie prevented Reeder from tapping in at the back post.

Gareth Turner goes close

Some respite for the Glens saw McKenzie curl in a wicked free kick only for Ryan to head clear and Meadow were soon back on the front foot . On the hour mark another chance to take the lead went a-begging when, with the visitors’ defence stretched, a ball from the right found the unmarked McGuinness at the back post but with Semple stranded and the open net beckoning he failed to find the target.

Only half-chances fell the way of the visitors, Steele did well to find space in the box and control the ball before blasting over and then a cracking corner-kick from Gus Cochrane failed to find any takers.  On 74 minutes Meadow’s luck deserted them again as they came close to breaking the deadlock, albeit in controversial circumstances. Glen Mitchell was floored with a face knock but Barr was allowed to play on and from the right hand corner flag lofted the ball to the back post where the incoming Turner met it first time only to blast it off the post.  Ten men Glens then survived some aerial attacks as Mitchell received treatment on the side line to stop the bleeding nose.

Dempster and Steele played a peach of a one-two which concluded with the former’s first time strike from the edge of the box soaring just wide of target, while at the other end Semple clutched a Barr header with ease.

Both sides made changes with Finlay Frye replacing McGuinness for the Meadow while later the Glens brought on Gareth Armstrong for Miller and then Gareth Campbell for Cochrane.

With three minutes to go the substitutions paid dividends for the visitors. Campbell picked out Armstrong who killed the ball in the ‘D’ at the edge of the penalty box and faced with a line of three Meadow defenders bided his time before rolling the ball wide for the incoming John Dempster who having given the fourth of the back four the slip made his way to the corner of the six yard box before calmly placing the ball beyond the reach of Wardrope and into the safe have of the Meadow net.

The juxtaposition of the red topped celebrations and the blue shirted post-mortem underlined the stark significance of the goal for both sides.

The home side dusted themselves down and pegged the Glens back as they went in search of a share of the points. Two minutes into added time a Strachan cross from the right was met at the back post by Barr only for his venomous volley to be bravely blocked by Craig Potter and Armstrong.  Two minutes later the whistle went, fittingly with Dempster in control of the ball at the Meadow’s corner. SHOTTS BON ACCORD 0 (0)

Glenafton hosted the current Scottish Junior Cup holders and Scottish Cup semi-finalists Shotts Bon Accord in a crucial league encounter for both sides. The home side kicked off with the same line up that began in the Ayrshire Cup win over Ardeer Thistle last Saturday and were first to threaten on 3 minutes when Paul McKenzie headed a Craig Potter cross wide of target. Shotts responded with a quick break that ended with Glen Mitchell getting a brilliant block on Alan McKenzie at the edge of the box and Mark Sideserf firing the loose ball over the bar.

Colin Williamson’s determination saw him break into the box only to be halted by Richie McKillen and his claims for a penalty waved away. Back came the home side and McKenzie lofted a ball over the Bon Accord’s back line for Jack Steele to chase and cut back for Ross Robertson who drilled the ball inches wide. The game was evenly matched with neither keeper severely tested until the 24th minute when the Glens took the lead in spectacular fashion.

aa_rosco1

Ross Robertson

Potter collected the ball on the half way line and drove forward before picking out Ryan Miller who flicked it on to Robertson on the edge of the box with his back to goal. As Miller continued his run into the box to complete the one-two with Robertson who instead took a touch before weaving his way between Chris Walker and Alan McKenzie to gain a sight of goal and from 18 yards out powerfully placed the ball into the postage stamp  leaving keeper Johnny Murdoch rooted to the spot. A definite contender for Glens goal of the season so far.

The visitors pressed forward but a Glens defence being marshalled brilliantly by Glen Mitchell were full of confidence and Shotts were forced to resort to shots from distance   which were dealt with confidently and comfortably by keeper Ally Semple. H/T Glens 1 Shotts 0

The Glens came out of the blocks flying and were unfortunate not to double their lead. McKenzie pounced on the ball in the box and picked out Potter who chipped the ball to the back post where Miller rose to power a header beyond Murdoch only for Darren Ferguson to knee the ball off the line high into the air and Robertson’s header crash off the underside of the bar. Solid play from Paul Finnigan saw him drive forward and feed substitute Andy Scott tight on the right flank who whipped wicked ball across the face of goal only for McKillen to clear in some style at the cost of a corner.

Paul McKenzie

On 58 the big centre half then turned provider, gathering a pass from Craig McEwan before launching the ball upfield over the heads of the Bon Accord back line for McKenzie and Robertson to give chase. Ferguson’s  back-tracking proved to be in vain as McKenzie on the 18 yard line calmly lobbed the ball over the head of the out-rushing Murdoch and into the cavernous net.

The Glens controlled the game to its conclusion with Mitchell and McKillen solid in the centre of defence, new signings Steele and Miller fitting in nicely and the fresh legs of Gareth Armstrong and Bobby Colligan keep the visitors on their toes.

ARDEER THISTLE 0 (0)

Glenafton gave starting places to new signings to midfielder Jack Steele and striker Ryan Miller while in Ardeer’s ranks was former Glenafton player Derek Gemmell , now skipper of the Stevenston side.

Ardeer began brightly and Ally Semple had to be alert to punch the ball from the head of Scott Reid  while soon after Reid’s header flashed wide of the keeper’s left hand post.  The home side were soon on the front foot and the lively play up front of Miller and strike partner Ross Robertson was posing problems for Thistle. On 12 minutes a Gus Cochrane corner kick saw Robertson rise unopposed in the six yard box to power a header goal-ward only for Gemmell to stick out a hand to block the ball and earn the defender a yellow card and the home side a spot kick. Ross Robertson gave keeper Chris Lamb no chance as he blasted home from 12 yards out.

Spot on Ross Robertson

Spot on Ross Robertson

The home side continued to press but the game was soon littered with stoppages as Ardeer were forced to concede free kicks, many of which came to nothing and the best of which had Lamb launch himself to push a Robertson effort from 30 yards out over the bar.  On 19 minutes a Paul McKenzie pass split the Thistle defence and picked out Miller who worked his way to the bye-line before cutting the ball back for Danny Mitchell but his attempt to place it from 10 yards out was blocked on the line by Ricky Allan with Lamb still floored. The keeper was better placed to handle a Robertson effort after he had gathered a Cochrane pass and turned Scaramuzza in the box.

The visitors had their moments as an attacking force, albeit few and far between, with the inventive play of Ross Munro on the right flank inevitably the source of any impending danger from Thistle, but in the end Semple was seldom tested. At the other end Craig Potter from wide on the right whipped a wicked ball across the face of goal and although neither defence nor attack could connect Lamb was relieved to watch it goes inches wide of his far post. The keeper then held an angled shot from Miller.

Ryan Miller with George Bonner

Five minutes from the break Miller clipped a cute ball into the box for the incoming Cochrane who took a touch before firing just wide of the outstretched arm of Lamb. Munro and Reid combined well to play Rory Campbell into the box but McKenzie and Glen Mitchell double-teamed to see off the threat. The half concluded with Robertson winning another aerial battle only for his header to go wide of target. HT Glens 1 Ardeer 0

McKenzie jinked past no fewer than three Ardeer defenders on the right hand edge of the penalty box before cutting the ball back to the penalty spot where Cochrane and Steele combined to force the ball goalward only for Lamb to get down low and push the ball wide of the post. Three minutes later the keeper excelled himself with a stunning save that had both sets of supporters applauding their appreciation. Steele deep in the box leapt to head the ball on to Miller whose guided header from the six yard line seemed certain to find the net only for Lamb to throw himself along the length of his goal and with a strong hand push the ball to safety.

Man-of-the Match Chris Lamb

Some respite for the visitors in the form of a corner kick with Semple called into action to clear from the head of Reid.  Glenafton continued to enjoy the bulk of the pressure and on 65 minutes Bobby Colligan, on for Gus Cochrane, was unfortunate to see his drive crash off  bar. However, twenty seconds later Robertson evaded George Bonner’s tackle to break into the box where the late arriving Scaramuzza caught the striker and receives a second yellow card and his marching orders. Lamb was set the wrong way from the spot as Ross Robertson bagged his brace to double the Glens lead.

The home side brought on Gareth Armstrong and Graeme Eaglesham for Robertson and McKenzie. On 72 minutes Jack Steele was denied by the outstretched leg of Lamb and the loose ball gathered by Colligan only for his shot from close range to thunder off the upright.

Colligan thundered a shot from 25 yards out and although Lamb at full stretch did well to push the ball out the man-of-the-match could do nothing to prevent Danny Mitchell from blasting home from a few yards out, with what was all but the last kick of the game. F/T Glens 3 Ardeer 0
