Fully recovered from a recent knock club captain Craig Menzies made a return to the Glens starting line-up while top scorer Aaron Connolly remained side-lined and Ryan McChesney began his two match suspension. In Arthurlie’s starting line-up was former Glenafton striker Graeme Barbour.

The home side enjoyed the bulk of possession in the first half with persistent passages of fine passing played at high tempo. However clear cut chances were scarce and the best of these were engineered by striker Alain Kinney. In the opening minutes his low angled shot from outside of the box whizzed past keeper’s Patrick Doherty’s right hand post. On 12 minutes the self-same post came to the visitors rescue after Findlay Frye and Jamie McKernon combined to pick out Kinney in the box who slipped past Kevin Green before stroking the ball beyond the reach of the on-rushing Doherty only for it crash off the base of the woodwork.

There were only glimpses of the Barrhead side as an attacking force with Ryan McArdle often the architect; however they too struggled to test the keeper.

Glenafton continued to press with McKernon and Frye controlling the midfield and full backs Craig McEwan and Alan Cairns pushing forward to support Stevie Miller and Cameron Marlow on the flanks. On 18 minutes Kinney made good progress deep into the box on the left hand side before cutting back for Marlow only for Green to get an outstretched leg to the ball. Marlow then turned provider and his cross into the box saw Michael Reilly put Doherty under pressure and although the keeper flapped the ball away, Mark Blakey was on hand to boot the ball clear.

Arthurlie enjoyed their best spell of the half in the closing ten minutes. McKernon headed clear a corner kick and soon after a good run down the right by McArdle ended with keeper Brian McGarrity comfortably collecting his cut-back at the near post. McArdle then tried his luck with a shot from 20 yards but again McGarrity was more than a match and held the ball cleanly. HT Glens 0 Lie 0

The ‘game of two halves’ took shape immediately from the restart as Arthurlie came flying out the blocks. A quick break down the left by Eddie McTernan ended with ball being flashed across the face of the goalmouth with a touch from McGarrity taking it away from Barbour and Cairns clearing the danger.

A switch of flanks and McArdle’s floated ball to the back post was headed behind by McEwan as Kyle Rafferty threatened and from the resultant corner kick Ryan McGregor’s flick-on was mopped up with another timely clearance from Cairns. On 55 minutes another Arthurlie corner was met at the back post by a tremendous leap from McGregor and his header looked goal-bound only for McGarrity to pull off a magnificent save to stretch and punch the ball away for Frye to mop up.

Straight after the visitors made a double substitution with the Graemes, Barbour and Ramage, making way for Stevie Dymock and Paul Stewart

Some respite for Glenafton on 63 minutes when Cairns cut-back from the bye-line was met by Marlow deep in the box and although the midfielder met it sweetly his shot was pushed over the bar in some style by Doherty. The resultant corner saw Kinney win the aerial battle against no fewer than three ‘Lie defenders but nonetheless the visitors successfully cleared the danger.

The home side brought on the fresh legs of Darren McGill for Stevie Miller but it was the visitors that were soon back on the front foot. McTernan menaced his way down the left wing before firing the ball across the goalmouth which eventually fell for McCardle in space and although his shot beat the keeper, Cairns was again in the right place at the right time to pull off a goal saving block. The defender then double-teamed with Frye to repel Dymock’s near post header from the corner-kick that followed.

McGill’s ball into the box for Kinney was headed clear by Mark Blakey only for it to be snapped up by McKernon on the outskirts of the box and as he drove forward Rafferty took the feet from him; outside the box deemed the referee. McKernon took the free kick and although it beat the wall it zoomed past Doherty’s right hand post.

The game was now more evenly balanced as chances came and went. At one end ‘Lie won a corner-kick which was headed clear by Jamie McGeoghegan, while at the other McGill slipped the ball to Frye in the box and his run brought to and with a brave dive by Doherty at the feet of the Glens’ midfielder. Back up-field and Dymock’s cross intended for Stewart was cut out by the outstretched leg of McGeoghegan, the defender and his keeper relieved to see the ball sail over the bar. Glens responded through a break by Reilly, only for his shot from 22 yards to be comfortably clutched by keeper Doherty.

On 77 minutes Glenafton brought on a trialist for Michael Reilly and soon after his pace took him beyond Green to gather the ball in the box only for the chasing defender to pull him to the ground. Green earned a red card and on 81 minutes Alain Kinney slammed the spot-kick home to out the Glens ahead.

The home side took advantage of a shell-shocked Arthurlie and Doherty had to be alert to save a shot from Marlow and then a close range header from McGill. Back came ’Lie and a free kick floated into the box for McCardle was headed clear by Menzies and then McGarrity saved well from Jamie Lyden as he attempted to head home a corner kick.

With two minutes to go Glenafton appeared to have doubled their lead after a great run into the box by McEwan that took him behind the ‘Lie defence and with the keeper to beat tapped the ball back for Kinney to blast into vacant net. However, celebrations were cut short by an offside flag, although it looked liked mistaken identity, as Marlow was in the offside position.

Kinney left to a great reception to be replaced by Craig Brown and the Glens held on to their slender lead and secure all three points. FT Glens 1 ‘Lie 0

CUMNOCK JUNIORS 1 (1)

Glenafton’s top goal scorer Aaron Connolly remained side-lined through injury while captain Craig Menzies recovering from injury had a place on the bench.

Cumnock enjoyed the early chances and in the opening 10 minutes a game of head tennis in the Glens’ box ended with John Bradford’s header in the safe clutches of keeper Brian McGarrity whilst both Chris Robertson and John Johnston had shots at goal that went wide of target.

On 13 minutes the home side responded through Michael Reilly only for his shot from the outskirts of the box go over the bar. Three minutes later a Craig McEwan free kick was won deep in the box by the head of Cameron Marlow but Stevie Crawford was well placed to clear the ball from the feet of Reilly.

‘Nock ‘ Nock! Who’s there ….Jamie McKernon

The game became scrappy and neither side had seriously tested their opponent’s keeper before the visitors took the lead on 30 minutes with a touch of quality from Chris Robertson. James Lundie lumped a long ball up-field that deceived the home defence and Robertson on the edge of the box let the ball take a bounce before elegantly hooking it high in the air to descend into the postage stamp.

Four minutes later a Chris McKnight free kick floated to the back post found the unmarked Kieran Wood but the defender guided his free header wide of target. Soon after Wood blocked Alain Kinney’s attempt at goal and although the loose ball was gathered by Stevie Miller his cross from wide on the right was picked out the air by former Glenafton goalie Ally Semple. Five minutes from the break Cammy Marlow hobbled off to be replaced by former Cumnock player Darren McGill. HT Glens 0 Cumnock 1

Minutes into the new half McGill fired a shot from distance wide of the post. On 51 minutes the woodwork came to the Glens rescue when substitute Richard Hanvey’s free kick driven through a ruck of players beat McGarrity before crashing off the post. Just before the hour mark the Glens keeper brought off a stunning point blank save from substitute Gavin Brown. Two minutes later Wood with another free header just failed to hit the target.

Midway through the half Semple was quick off his line to deny Reilly a shot at goal after the Glens’ striker beat the ‘Nock defence to a through ball into the box.

With 20 minutes to go Jamie McKernon, after another tireless shift, was replaced by Craig Menzies , who slotted back into the centre of defence and Jamie McGeoghegan pushed forward into midfield. Two minutes later, in the best move of the game, Findlay Frye in the middle of the park picked out McGill who then fed Reilly on the right to lay the ball into the path of the over-lapping McEwan. The defender drove into the box before blasting an angled shot for goal, only for Semple at full stretch to push the ball away and then look on as Stevie Miller’s attempt to slot home was blocked by Brown and McKnight then clear that rebound from the feet of McEwan.

Glens brought on the fresh legs of Craig Brown for Stevie Miller as the home side pressed for the equaliser. With 10 minutes to go McEwan, from also the same spot in the box as before,  sent a shot whizzing past Semple’s near post. Kinney then fashioned a shot from outside the box that zipped wide of the other post.

A McEwan cross from deep on the right was headed clear at the back post by Gavin Brown as his name-sake Craig looked to head home and nothing came of the resultant corner. Semple then tipped a shot from distance round the post and although this corner was better executed Semple, sandwiched between Reilly and Kinney, did enough to punch the ball clear. It proved to be too little too late for the home side and the’ Nock earned their first victory over the Glens in five attempts this season to secure all three points. FT Glens 0 Cumnock 1

Hurlford 2 Glenafton 0

West Region Premier Division : Match 19

Wednesday 30 th April, Blair Park, Hurlford

HURLFORD UNITED 2 (1)

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 0 (0)

East Ayrshire’s two Scottish Junior Cup finalists lined up in a league encounter at Blair Park, a month before the final that will take place away a few miles away at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock.

For the Glens former ‘Ford forward Aaron Connolly joined Craig Menzies on the injury list after suffering a knock in the Monday night victory over Pollok. Cameron Marlow was rested with a place on the bench. In Hurlford’s starting line-up were four former Glenafton players – Glen Mitchell, Jack Steele, Paul McKenzie and Ross Robertson, while John Dempster was on the bench.

Ford came flying out the blocks and had the Glens defence at sixes and sevens in the early encounters and with 3 minutes gone Robertson missed a great chance to open the scoring after his free header from close range sailed over the bar. Undeterred the breakthrough came two minutes later as the visitors struggled to clear their lines and after blocking two attempts the ball fell kindly for Callum Watt in space to power the ball home from close range.

Stevie Miller

Glens rallied and earned a corner and although Ryan McChesney won the header Hurlford hoofed the ball clear. At the other Craig McEwan won the aerial battle with Stewart Kean as they challenged for the ball under the Glens’ bar. Another Glen’s corner ended with Alain Kinney with his back to goal hooking the ball over the bar. On 12 minutes Stevie Millier made good progress down the right and although Michael Reilly beat Mitchell to the cut back his shot from the edge of the six yard box was blocked well.

The storm clouds opened over Blair Park and the hosts looked the more likely to add to their tally as they spread ball with some style from flank to flank and yet although the defending could be frantic at times in the Glens box, keeper Brian McGarrity wasn’t severely tested as chances went a-begging. Meanwhile the Glens were restricted to a few half chances and Ford’s keeper Alistair Brown mopped these up comfortably. HT Hurlford 1 Glens 0

Hurlford won an early corner and McGarrity got a vital hand to the ball as Robertson rose to head at the back post . On 48 minutes the home side were reduced to 10 men when Steel was shown a straight red card for a studs-showing challenge on Miller at the centre circle. McKenzie’s name went in the book soon after for a late challenge on McGarrity. Reilly tried his luck from distance only for Brown to clutch the ball safely in difficult conditions.

Another fine punch on 58 minutes from McGarrity prevented the ball reaching Kean crouching at the back post, lining up his header. Three minutes later a long ball released Robertson through on goal, forcing McGarrity to run to the outskirts of his box only for the ‘Ford striker to use a hand to guide the ball away from the keeper. A yellow card, was swiftly followed by a red (perhaps he had been booked previously or protested inappropriately).

Nevertheless it was the 9 men that fashioned the next goal. A Glens attack was broken down on the edge of the ‘Ford box and Watt launched the ball upfield for Kean to chase. The striker fended off the back-tracking McChesney and after a touch or two in the box he gave McGarrity no chance and with dogged determination bulged the net from six yards out and doubled the host’s lead on 69 minutes. Six minutes later McGarrity dived bravely at the feet of Watt as ‘Ford pushed for another.

Darren McGill beats Paal McKenzie to the ball

Understandably the Glens began to enjoy much more possession but much of that in their own half and just beyond as they struggled to penetrate a well drilled defence. Fresh legs of a trialist for Reilly and Marlow for Darren McGill were added and later on Craig Brown but to no avail and Hurlford held on comfortably to secure all the points.

POLLOK  2 (1)

With captain Craig Menzies still out through injury Glenafton drafted in a trialist to partner Ryan McChesney in the centre of defence.

The visitors got off to a flying start and took the lead on 8 minutes after some quick thinking and slick passing. Mark McLennan deep in the Glens half took a short throw to Adam Strachan who instantly returned the ball to the thrower by now had made good headway down the right flank before cutting the ball into the box where David Winters, on the corner of the six yard box, toed the ball home via the inside of the near post. It was a lead Pollok held until the break. H/T Glens 0 Pollok 1

Cameron Marlow

Cameron Marlow

Within 3 minutes of the restart Glenafton were back on level. Substitute Craig McEwan broke down a Pollok attack deep in the Glens half and launched the ball up the right flank for Michael Reilly to give chase only and although Gary Wild gathered it he was forced toward his own corner flag as Reilly closed him down. The Pollok defender played the ball to Josh Horne who now surrounded by three red shirts attempted to complete the one-two only for Reilly to nick the ball which was gathered by Aaron Connolly who turned quickly in the box and whipped a cross to the back post for Cameron Marlow arriving at pace to lash the ball into the roof of the net.
Play flowed from end to end and on 55 minutes the visitors restored their lead with after Strachan collected the ball on the half way line and rolled it back to a team-mate who launched the ball upfield where Winters got the jump on the home defence and following some excellent controlled twisted and turned to shake off the attention of the trialist to roll the ball to the back post for Adam Strachan to put the finishing touches to a move he started.

Jamie McKernon

Jamie McKernon

On 69 minutes the sides were all square again. McEwan’s free kick from inside in his own half was headed on into the Pollok box by substitute Alain Kinney and although a defender got an outstretched leg to the ball, it popped up in the air to a perfect height for the in-rushing Jamie McKernon to head home beyond the reach of keeper Willie Duncan.

Alain Kinney

Alain Kinney

A minute later the Glens took the lead for the first time and again McEwan had a part to play in the goal against his former club. McKernon from the centre circle picked out Darren McGill wide on the right and he in turn found the overlapping McEwan who took a touch before lofting the ball into the six yard box where Duncan could only partially clear and Alain Kinney, another former ‘Lok player, was on hand to lash the ball between the grounded keeper and defender Chris McGowan.
In the first minute of additional time Kinney sent Connolly careering down the right and his attempt to pick his fellow striker in the box was cut out by the arm of McLennan. Connolly stepped up to take the spot kick but Duncan at full stretch managed to push the ball and then deny Kinney from netting the rebound with an excellent block. FT Glens 3 Pollok 2

With Arthurlie defeating Cumnock 2-0 at Barrhead, the defeat at Loch Park means that Pollok will be relegated along with Largs Thistle. Rob Roy went down 4-1 at Hurlford and now occupy the play-off spot on 23 points, having completed their league games. The Glens too have 23 points with a superior goal difference (by 12 goals) and have four more games to play – Hurlford, Cumnock, Arthurlie and Clydebank.

With captain Craig Menzies out injured and Craig McEwan unavailable for selection Glenafton made a number of changes to the starting eleven that defeated Camelon in the Scottish Junior Cup last week-end. In came Stevie Miller and Darren McGill, while Alain Kinney joined Aaron Connolly up front with Michael Reilly on the bench. In goal for Petershill was Glens’ former stand-in keeper Bruno Maltoni while top goal scorer Chris Mackie started on the bench.

On 5 minutes Kinney did well to force his way past Jordan Murch and into the box before turning Ross McCabe and curling a shot for goal which was held well by Maltoni. Three minutes later Paul Woods capitalised on a defensive slip and drove deep into the Glens box, twisted past Ryan McChesney before keeper Brian McGarrity made a brave save at his feet on the six yard line. David Morrison gathered the loose ball and his attempt to slot home was blocked by Miller at the expense of a corner-kick which was cleared by the home defence.

Although Liam Finnigan looked lively down the right flank for the visitors more often than not there was little end product from some fine build up play. For the home side Findlay Frye caught the eye in the middle of the park with some determined runs as well as winning more than his share of aerial battles.

Nevertheless there were few clear cut chances on show in the first half and the majority of these came from set pieces which were defended well and both keepers dealing comfortably with high balls. Chances from open play were even scarcer the best of which saw Aaron Connolly and Cameron Marlow combine to set up Kinney and his low drive from 15 yards was well covered by Maltoni. The sides exchanged corner-kicks in the opening minutes of the new half. The visitors’ attempt was headed clear by McGill while Jamie McKernon’s kick flashed across the face of the Peasy goal with no takers at the back post.

Petershill brought on marksman Chris Mackie for Morrison and on 54 minutes he won a free-kick at the edge of the box. Graham Girvan curved his shot round the wall only for McGarrity to catch comfortably.Glens responded immediately through Marlow who picked out Connolly in the box and he in turn rolled the ball back to Kinney on the 18 yard line to strike it first time but Maltoni again came out on top with a fine save. On 56 minutes the keeper could only look on as Kinney’s powerful header from 6 yards flashed past the post.

The home side were now very much on the front foot and on the hour mark McKernon whipped in a cross from the right and as Kinney leapt to head home, Maltoni got a hand to the ball to force it wide for a corner, which too was cleared.

A few minutes later Kinney came off to a great reception from the home support to be replaced by Michael Reilly. The home side continued to press but could not unlock the Peasy defence. Indeed on 72 minutes it was the visitors that came close to breaking the deadlock when Mackie was presented with a free header in front of goal but it lacked power and direction and McGarrity gathered cleanly.

Scottish Junior Cup Semi-final 2nd leg

Sunday 20th April 2014, Loch Park, New Cumnock

Glenafton win 3-2 on aggregate

Glenafton Athletic, Tommy Bryce and his troops cheered on by the red #Afton Army defeated Camelon Juniors2-0 at Loch Park to secure a 3-2 aggregate win and march on to the Scottish Junior Cup final for the fifth time in the club’s history. This one, arguably the most remarkable achievement following the close-season turmoil that befell the New Cumnock club.

Camelon , a goal to the good from the 1st leg at Carmuirs Park last week, were first to show and top goal scorer Kevin Kelbie was denied a close range header by Brian McGarrity as he rose to cleanly clutch and gather the ball to safety – a sight that would become a feature of the game. A Camelon corner-kick was repelled on 10 minutes as they continued to apply the early pressure.

Glens responded through a determined run into the box by Michael Reilly which earned the home side their first corner-kick and two more would follow in quick succession. Jamie McKernon’s kick arrived in the heart of the six yard box where Aaron Connolly may have got a touch before the ball fell for Cameron Marlow who kept his cool to fire the ball home from a few yards out and level the tie in aggregate with 14 minutes gone.

Camelon’s defence dealt better with another Glens’ corner a few minutes later and then keeper Ritchie Barnard rushed from his line to beat Marlow to the chase for a through ball deep into the box.

The Mariners soon regained their sea-legs and with the wind at their back set sail down both flanks with good effect but finishing touches were proving more elusive that buried treasure. Nevertheless they enjoyed a good fifteen minute spell of pressure beginning with an unchallenged McGarrity plucking a corner kick from the left out the air.

Another corner was only partially cleared by the home defence and the ball eventually fell to Jamie Donaldson wide left in the box but his cross for Colin Allison at the near post crashed off the self-same post. Kelbie found some space at the right hand corner of the six yard box and although he did well to engineer a powerful shot the ball ended well wide of target . Donaldson’s low angled shot was on target but was comfortably collected by McGarrity and the keeper then bravely leapt to grasp the ball to fend off the challenge from Marty Wright. A timely tackle by Jamie McGeoghegan then prevented Allison a sniff at goal.

The home side did break forward on occasion chiefly through Reilly and Connolly however they too were finding clear cut chances to be thin on the ground. Ten minutes from the break a clever through ball by Findlay Frye cut open Camelon’s defence only for Barnard to get the jump on Connolly, run to the edge of the box and launch the ball to safety. Frye then whipped a cross in from the left only for Barnard to grab the ball from under his bar as Reilly challenged. In the last action of the half Blair Batchelor set up Alison in the box but his shot lacked the conviction and power to beat McGarrity H/T Glens 1 Camelon 0

The visitors were quickly on the front foot and Donaldson’s acrobatic volley was deflected wide to earn their first corner of the new half, which McGarrity mopped up with another outstanding piece of handling. Within five minutes of the restart the Glens suffered a serious setback when captain Craig Menzies hobbled off the park.

The reshuffle saw Jamie McGeoghegan drop back and partner Ryan McChesney at the centre of defence and the oncoming Darren McGill fill the vacancy in midfield. The home side quickly regrouped and won a couple of free kicks on the outskirts of the box but these came to nothing while. A powerful run down the right wing by Frye ended with his cross into the box being cut out by the outstretched leg of Alan Benton , as Connolly waited to pounce.  At the other end McChesney’s presence was enough to force Colin Leiper’s to volley wide of target. Back upfield and on 67 minutes Glenafton appeared to have doubled their lead after Darren McGill bulleted a header into the net from four yards out, only for it to be disallowed for some infringement.

Two minutes later a Batchelor free kick caused panic in the Glens box as McGarrity got down low to hold the ball only for Allison to attempt to force it over the line beyond the keeper and Craig McEwan. Camelon arms raised to celebrate the equaliser before noticing the raised flag of the assistant referee for an infringement.

On 73 minutes Alain Kinney replaced Michael Reilly the striker exiting to a well-deserved ovation from the home support. With time running out neither side could get the upper hand and the dreaded penalty shoot-out was the talk of the terracing. However, with four minutes to go Scottish Junior cup-tie drama descended on Loch Park. A slick passing moving down the right flank concluded with Batchelor having the keeper to beat only for McGarrity to dive bravely at the feet of the Junior Scotland midfielder and smother the ball, which was then promptly launched upfield.

With their backs to goal Connolly and Eamon Fullerton challenged for the ball on the 18 yard line, the Glens striker chesting the ball back for Alain Kinney to gather who then held off a defender before executing a cute reverse pass to deliver the ball into the path of Findlay Frye who promptly leathered it from 25 yards out and with the aid of a deflection dispatch it into the gaping net with the wrong-footed Barnard rooted to the spot.

Pennants exchanged the youngsters departed the scene while the rain decided to hang around to the final whistle and witness the opening leg of the Scottish Junior Cup semi-final between Camelon Juniors and Glenafton Athletic.

The New Cumnock side were quick off the blocks with Michael Reilly and Aaron Connolly combining well as the white shirts pushed forward. From tight on the right wing Connolly picked out Cameron Marlow in the six yard box only for the midfielder to scoop his shot over the bar.

Seconds later Connolly clipped a through ball that caught the Camelon defence flat footed and gave Cameron Marlow a one-on-one with Ritchie Barnard with the keeper forcing the Glens man much wider than he had hoped to travel and the chance appeared to have gone – not in the slightest! From wide on the left and from an outrageous angle he fired the ball back across the goal mouth beyond a flotilla of floundering Mariners gallantly trying to divert its course but to no avail, instead it struck the back post before nestling in the rigging. Glenafton a goal to the good and with less than 3 minutes gone.

Five minutes later Barnard tipped a Ryan McChesney header over the bar and from the resultant corner-kicker the Scotland international keeper made a stunning point blank save from a close range Marlow header and from that corner kick clutched Marlow’s header from under the bar.

At the other end Brian McGarrity matched that save by getting down low to push away a Blair Batchelor drive after the midfielder had pounced on a headed clearance from Alan Cairns. The chance kick-started Camelon into action and the game was now end-to-end. On the slippery surface tackles won didn’t always result in the ball being retained and possession change hands readily.

On 26 minutes the home side drew level after a ball into the six yard box saw McChesney win the aerial battle only for the ball to break free and the two Colins, Alison and Leiper, react quickest with the latter Colin Leiper prodding the ball home from a yard out.

Four minutes later Craig McEwan stood firm in another goal mouth scramble forcing Alison to set up Gary Kelly but McGarrity’s pressure forced the defender to skew his effort wide.

On 35 minutes Connolly on the left made excellent progress into the Camelon box and although his square ball eluded the out-rushing Barnard defender Alan Benton got a timely touch to deny the incoming Findlay Frye a tap in. Five minutes later a Jamie McKernon corner kick almost sneaked in at the back post but for a headed clearance by Andy McGown, the ball then hooked back into the mix by McChesney only for Kelly to partially clear and then no fewer than three red shirts close down Reilly before he could shoot for goal.

Camelon came out firing and Alison’s pace and movement on a surface that was becoming greasier by the minute caught the eye. Headers from Craig Menzies and then Jamie McGeoghan cleared the Afton line as crosses from both flanks were fired into the box.

Back came the Glens to earn a corner kick which was ably cleared by the Mariners defence. On the hour mark Marlow’s cross from wide on the left found Connolly in space on the box but the Glens’ striker touch eluded him and the chance lost. Four minutes later the electric Alison burst through the middle only for the tracking Menzies to nick the ball in the danger zone and McKernon to pick up the pieces and clear the ball.

The home side continued to press and muddy white shirts were strewn across the ground as they manfully continued to repel balls whipped into the box. On 67 minutes it was the red shirt of Kevin Kelbie that lay prostrate in the penalty box after a coming together with Frye, the referee waving away claims for a spot kick. Soon after Allison’s athletic leap and header in the box was bravely headed clear by McGeoghan as Marty Wright looked certain to nod home from close range and then Cairns’ pressure was enough to ensure Batchelor’s header loop over the bar.

Some respite for the visitors when Frye forced his way up-field and little wonder after an energy sapping run Barnard comfortably held his shot from distance. Glens won a couple of corners in quick succession, the second of which saw Barnard punch the ball from the head of McGeoghan.

Back came Camelon and again balls were being whipped in from both wings before the pressure paid off on 77 minutes when Craig Menzies’ attempt to prevent a cross from the left reaching Kelbie ended with his clearing header unfortunately flying into his own net. In the aftermath Camelon’s Andy McGown was shown a straight red card for his misguided celebratory gesture.

Glenafton brought on the fresh legs of Alain Kinney for Michael Reilly and soon after Darren McGill for Cameron Marlow while the hosts sacrificed Colin Alison for defender Eamon Fullerton. Only a few chances were created in the closing minutes the best of which ended with Barnard saving well from a Connolly header.

West Region Premier Division : Match 16

Saturday 5th April, Loch Park, New Cumnock

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2 (1)

KIRKINTILLOCH ROB ROY 1 (1)

Rob Roy made the early running and only Craig McEwan’s superb tackle on Ryan Deas deep in the box prevented the visitors taking an early lead. On 8 minutes it McEwan again that was in the right and the right time to bring a well worked free kick to an end , after Deas had neatly flicked the ball over the Glens defence to pick out Willie Sawyers on the bye-line for the striker to cut the ball back into the danger area.

Glens began to edge their way into the game and excellent run by Aaron Connolly saw him power past defender Martin Brogan and drive deep into the box only for the covering Willie Wilson to steal the ball at the expense of a corner-kick. Jamie McKernon perfectly picked out Cameron Marlow at the far corner of the six yard box and the Glens’ midfielder rose unchallenged to send a looping header into the net at the junction of post and bar and his side ahead after 14 minutes.

With their tails up the Glenafton began to enjoy greater possession with McKernon and Findlay Frye winning the majority of the midfield battles as the hosts pushed for a second. Marlow fired an angled shot from 15 yards out which was held well by keeper Stuart Wilson. Frye then forced his way down the right flank beyond Paul McGeough before whipping the ball across goal from the touchline where Marlow with his back to goal made a valiant effort to hook the ball home, only for it to drift wide of the post. On 25 minutes the visitors came close to drawing level when from six yards out Brogan bulleted a header inches over the bar from a free-kick taken by Deas close to the right hand corner flag.

Ten minutes later Glens won back-to-back corners after Marlow’s shot from 12 yards was deflected wide. Although Jamie McGeoghan won aerial battle from the resultant kicks the Rabs momentarily cleared the danger at the expense of a throw-in. McEwan launched the ball to the outskirts of the six yard box where Darren McGill bravely barged his way between two Rabs’ defenders to power a header for goal only for the ball to whizz wide of the post.

Just before the break a free kick launched deep into the box was headed on by Sawyers but before Ally Martin could add the finishing touch an airborne Brian McGarrity punched the ball clear. At the other end his counterpart Wilson brought the half to a close with a brave dive at the feet of Connolly. HT Glens 1 Rob Roy 0

As in the first half the Rabs were quick out the blocks and earned a corner in 30 seconds which ended with Sawyers’ header sailing over the bar. Glens countered through a long range shot from Michael Reilly, it too finishing over the bar. Thoughts of end-to-end play were quickly extinguished as the visitors took control of the game, with the introduction of Chris Duff having an immediate impact.

On 51 minutes a goalmouth scramble ended with a number of red shirts sprawled across the six yard box and McGarrity saving Scott Morton’s attempt to guide the ball home from close range. Three minutes later Glens surrendered possession cheaply inside the Rabs half and the ball was quickly dispatched up-field to be gathered by Sawyers and although he could not shake off the attention of the back-tracking Menzies and McGeoghan, he won a free kick after a trip by the latter on the edge of the box. Deas’ free-kick failed to test McGarrity but did generate another series of goalmouth scrambles and the Glens’ goal intact. Just after the hour mark the visitors’ efforts were rewarded when from a corner kick Willie Sawyers directed a near post header into the opposite post beyond the reach of McGarrity.

Five minutes later the woodwork came to Glens rescue twice in quick succession. Morton’s close range attempt crashed off the post and although McGeoghan managed to clear the loose ball from Sawyers it fell for Ronald who engineered a fantastic shot from the tightest of angles which thundered of the cross bar. As the ball descended McEwan’s presence was enough to force Morton’s header to go wide of target.

Glens made a tactical change with striker Alain Kinney replacing full back Alan Cairns. Still the Rabs continued to press and on 71 minutes Ronald tried his luck with a drive from the corner of the 18 yard box but McGarrity pulled off a fine save and his defence cleared the resultant corner. Five minutes later McGarrity leapt to claw the ball from the head of the incoming Morton.

Alain Kinney and Martin Brogan

Some respite for the Glens when Kinney shook off a couple of defenders in the box and eked out a shot at goal which Wilson held comfortably. The Rabs brought on Alan Urquhart’s, whose goal separated the two sides in the corresponding fixture at Adamslie Park, while Glens replaced Darren McGill with Stevie Miller.

On 86 minutes Reilly picked out Kinney on the left hand corner of the penalty box who then skipped past McGeough before sliding the ball across the face of the goal beyond the reach of the outrushing keeper for Aaron Connolly to gather and squeeze the ball between the post and Martin, which rolled along, and perhaps over, the goal-line for Findlay Frye to get the jump on Kris Mitchell and batter into the gaping net.

Two minutes later Kinney was the architect again and after fending off two defenders on the left touchline he whipped the ball into the six yard box for the incoming Miller but Wilson denied him his header after rising to clutch the ball safely. The Rabs pushed for a late equaliser only for the Glens defence to hold firm and secure the points. FT Glens 2 Rob Roy 1
