GLENS COME OUT ON TOP AGAINST BATTLING BLASTIES

Glenafton kicked off with the same eleven that started against Largs in last week’s league match at Loch Park.  With leaders Rob Roy’s match against Arthurlie postponed the New Cumnock side knew that victory in their game of hand would take them to top of the league.

Kilbirnie were quick out the blocks and their early pressure forced and corner-kick quickly followed by a free-kick at the right-hand side of the penalty box with neither of these deliveries converted into an attempt at goal.

The visitors first chance came on 10 minutes when Cammy Marlow deep in the six-yard box stretched to get a toe to a long free-kick from David Gary only for the ball roll inches wide of the post.

In a game peppered with stoppages for free-kicks Kilbirnie continued to look the livelier with former Queen’s Park midfielder David Anderson pulling the strings and former Rob Roy winger Paul Ronald keeping the Glens defence on their toes. On 15 minutes the two combined well down the right flank before Ronald was brought down close to the corner flag and then floated the free-kick into the heart of the six-yard box to present Martin Grehan with a free header that ultimately lacked the power or direction to test keeper Brian McGarrity who clutched the ball effortlessly. The Glens defence prevailed as Ladeside pressed for the opener.

Midway through the half the home side succeeded in string some passes together and Kyle McAusland forced his way to the bye-line and whipped a ball to the near post where it was headed clear by Ciaran Donnelly. The resulting corner was headed clear by Anderson as a line of red shirts queued up for the delivery. At the other end, Forde gathered the ball in the box but with McAusland blocking his way to goal the striker made his way for corner flag and took a tumbled before exiting the box – and was duly booked for simulation.

Glens enjoyed the closing 15 minutes with the half beginning with Darren McGill giving Mark Staunton the slip to slip ball into the box for Mick McCann in space between two defenders only for the striker to skew his shot wide of target.  Cameron Marlow stooped to win a header from a corner-kick that sent the ball looping over the bar.

Mick McCann 1-0

On 38 minutes Mick McCann burst into the box leaving defender David Green looking at his clean pair of heels and before the back-tracking Staunton could close him down he cracked an angled shot from 12 yards that found that gap between the outstretched hands of keeper Kieran Hughes and the far post to put the Glens ahead.

H/T Glens 1 Kilbirnie 0

Although the visitors regrouped and started the second half as brightly as they had the first it was the Glens that took their chance and in some style. Marlow, on the half way line, kept his balance to thread a perfectly weighted pass through the middle that took both centre backs out of play and presented McCann with a free run at goal with John Carter for company. The striker however wasted no time and from 22 yards lashed an unstoppable shot that was still bulging the net as the airborne keeper crashed to the ground to double the Glens lead on 53 minutes.

Ladeside rallied and on 59 minutes halved the deficit. Grehan’s close range header from a corner-kick was blocked in the six-yard box by McGill only for Adam Forde to snap up the loose ball and turning neatly before squeezing a low drilled shot home at the back post.

Tails up the visitors pushed for an equaliser but their hopes were dealt a blow after Darren Smith’s tumble in the box was adjudged to be simulation earning the winger a second yellow card and his marching orders. Matters almost got worse when another peach of a pass from Marlow released McCann into the box only for the back-tracking Donnelly to time his tackle to perfection to prevent the striker with a clean shot at goal and then the keeper block his second bite of the cherry. From the corner-kick that followed Dan Orsi’s near post header flashed inches wide of the back post.

Ronald went equally close at the other end with an angled shot from the left corner of the penalty box.

Glens made a double substitution with Ryan Borris coming on for the injured Cameron Marlow and John Carter making way for Chris Dallas while Ladeside brought on Stevie Meechan for Harkins.  Soon after the substitutions were completed with the home side bringing on Conor Lynass for Dan Orsi and the visitors replacing Ross McKinnon with James Creaney

Although Kilbirnie through Anderson continued to press for the equaliser it was Glenafton that were creating the best of the chances against the 10 men. With 10 minutes to go Dallas’s knock on left McCann with a one-one on the keeper with Hughes coming out on top. Five minutes later the striker did well to meet Dallas’s cross from the bye-line and engineer and overhead shot at goal but was again denied his hat-trick by the keeper.

The Glens won a couple or corner-kicks late in the match and elected for the short variety to run down the clock. A free kick from the right-hand corner of the penalty box proved too tempting and David Gray floated a ball with pin point accuracy on to the head of Chris Dallas in acres of space between two defenders to guide the ball beyond the reach of Hughes to complete the scoring on 89 minutes.

Glens returned to league business with the visit of Largs Thistle and earned all three points to close the gap on league leaders Kirkintilloch Rob Roy to two points with the New Cumnock side having a game in hand.

Several changes were made to the starting eleven that defeated Dunbar United in the Scottish Junior Cup 5th Round. Chris Meikle was recalled from his loan spell at Benburb to replace the injured Ryan McChesney while striker John Carter made his first start for the side replacing Joe Andrew who was unavailable due to work commitments. Kyle McAusland and Darren McGill came in for Ryan Borris and Conor Lynass.

The home side created most of the half chances that were on show in the opening cncounters without however seriously testing Thistle keeper Sean Lundy.

Glens breakthrough came just after the half hour mark through the award of a penalty kick. McAusland’s throw-in from the right was gathered in the box by John Carter and after holding off one defender, giving another the slip, riding the tackle of a third he was brought down by Laurie McMaster back supporting the defence. Darren McGill stepped up and lashed the ball home to put the home side one up on 31 minutes.

Four minutes later after breaking down a Largs’ attack deep in the Glens half McGill sprinted upfield and as defender Creag Little closed him down he slipped the ball into the path of Mick McCann, who had matched his run, and the striker took one look and one touch to guide the ball beyond Lundy and into the net.

The visitors created their best chance of the half when a long throw from Ian Fisher into the box was headed on by Kevin Struthers and the ball met on the volley by the irrepressible James Marks only for it to crash off the underside of the bar before forlorn claims that the ball had crossed the line were waved away.

H/T Glens 2 Largs 0

Thistle began the second half brightly with a couple of decent chances created again from Fisher’s throws into the box. For the first Little’s close range header lacked the power to test keeper Brian McGarrity while for the second the keeper pounced on the ball just as Marks was trying to tee up a shot a goal from within the six-yard box.

Glens responded with a quick break that saw McCann release Carter to run through on goal only for his shot to whiz inches wide of the post.

The visitors continued to threaten and John Tennent whipped a vicious free kick into the goalmouth from wide on the left that forced a fine save from McGarrity to push the ball onto the bar and out for a corner-kick.

However, it was Glenafton that added to their tally on 65 minutes. McAusland wide on the right chipped a perfectly weighted ball to the back post where Darren McGill outjumped Fisher to head the ball over the outstretched arm of the keeper and into the net.

Three minutes later Thistle’s cause suffered another blow when Struthers earned a second yellow card. However the 10 men rallied and pulled one back on 74 minutes when John Tennent fired home a spot kick after McGill had barged McMaster in the box.

Two minutes from time Glenafton completed the scoring after a fine passage of passing play. David Gray on the right played the ball back to Alan Cairns to switch play down the left to McGill who instantly dispatched the ball down the wing for substitute Chris Dallas to chase and gather before advancing to the dead ball line and cut the ball across the face of goal for the incoming John Carter to net from close range for his first goal for the club.

GLENS SEE OFF SEASIDERS AND SET SAIL FOR THE QUARTERS

Glenafton travelled to face Dunbar United in the 5th round of the Scottish Junior Cup in the third meeting between the two sides in the competition.  They first met in 1961 at the Quarter-Final stage when a then record crowd of 4,200 at Loch Park witnessed a 1-1 draw. The replay at Countess Park ended in the scoreline before Dunbar triumphed 1-0 in second replay at Hannah Park, Shotts. Dunbar went on to win the Scottish Junior Cup that year and it was good to meet up with some Dunbar supporters who took time out to share their memories and stories of that Glens visit. One of the travelling supporters from New Cumnock that day was Mary Dornan who was snapped by the Cumnock Chronicle (bottom left) celebrating John McNaught’s goal. Mary couldn’t make the return trip this year but hopefully she will have a chance to see the Glens in the Scottish at Loch Park this season as she did at the semi-final stage against Camelon three seasons ago.

The second meeting between Glens and Dunbar was in the 3rd round of 1988/89 at Loch Park with  the Seasiders coming out on top again with a a 2-1 win.

With Kyle McAusland on holiday and Ally Park down with the flu the Glens made a number changes to the side that defeated East Kilbride Thistle in the 4th round. Dan Orsi came in for McAusland at right back while David Gray and Conor Lynnas replaced Park and Darren McGill. Up front Mick McCann came in for Chris Dallas to partner Joe Andrew.

Glenafton kicked off and before any real chance had been created  Dunbar  were reduced to 10 men on 3 minutes after Darren Gillion received his marching orders for a raising a knee into the face of Ryan Borris. Five minutes later the visitors came close to taking the lead  after Conor Lynnas weaved his way into the box before drilling a low shot that only just sneaked past the far post. On 15 minutes Glens won a free kick so far from goal that Dunbar opted not to set up a defensive wall. With a clear line of sight David Gray could hardly avoid the temptation to  blast the ball on its way like a low flying goal-seeking missile to explode into the back of the net beyond the valiant effort of the keeper to disarm it.

Three minutes later the New Cumnock side almost doubled their lead when Ryan McChesney’s downward header from a corner-kick was gathered deep inside the six yard box by Borris and with his back to goal his back-heeler hit the base of the post.

Ryan Borris (No. 7) goes close

Midway through the half the referee pulled up with an injury and after a 12 minute delay he was replaced by one of the assistant referee’s running the line who in turn was replaced by a member of Dunbar’s committee.

Glenafton earned a couple of corner kicks which were duly cleared and Borris’s shot from a distance whizzed past the post. Gradually however the 10 men began to assert themselves and looked lively down both flanks with Dean Ballantyne’s play catching the eye. A lung bursting down the left ended with a low angled shot that was held well by keeper Brain McGarrity at his near post on the half hour mark. Two minutes later another break through the middle by Ballantyne ended with him opting to pick out Sam Young’s run into the box with a glorious pass and although he initially gave Alan Cairns the slip the defender recovered to get a great block on the striker’s shot which sent the ball sailing over the bar.

aa_dsc_0828

Alan Cairns blocks Sam Young’s shot

The Seasiders continued to push and after the resultant corner kick was only partially cleared the ball was whipped back into the box from wide on the right where it fell for Darren Handling only for his shot from 18 yards to be tipped away by McGarrity . Although the loose ball was fired home by Ballantyne the stand-in referee deemed it was from an offside position. On 37 minutes Glenafton suffered a set-back when centre-back Ryan McChesney suffered a hamstring injury and brought on striker Chris Dallas with fellow striker Mick McCann now partnering Craig Menzies in the centre of defence.  In the closing minutes of the half keeper John Johnstone did well to get down low to hold on to angled shot from Dallas. H/T Dunbar 0 Glens 1

The half began with play running from end to end and half chances coming and going. Young’s wicked cross from tight on the right had McGarrity leaping to finger-tip over the bar at the back post. His counterpart Johnstone then safely held Cameron Marlow’s shot from 20 yards out, as Dallas waited to pounce on any rebound. Dunbar then enjoyed a sustained period of possession without however engineering a clear shot at goal and Menzies and McCann were winning the aerial battles in the Glens box.

aa_dsc_0943

Brian McGarrity takes no chances

On 65 minutes Young finally managed to shake off the visitors’ defence only to sky his shot at goal well over the bar and to rub sea-salt in their wounds the next Glens attack ended with Scott Gibson bringing Joe Andrew down in the box and the referee pointing to the spot. Up stepped substitute Darren McGill to blast the ball into the roof of the net and double Glenafton’s lead on 67 minutes.

The Seasiders rallied briefly before the wind was taken from their sails on 76 minutes as Glens added a third. MGill picked out Cairns on the overlap down the left who in turn threaded a superb ball into the box for substitute John Carter to hold off a defender before feeding Marlow to clip the ball to the far corner of the six-yard box where Chris Dallas leapt to loop a perfectly measured header over the keeper and into the net.

Glenafton travelled to face East Kilbride Thistle in the Scottish Junior Cup 4th round. Leading Thistle’s line was former Glens striker Aaron Connolly and  a member of Scottish Junior Cup final side of three years ago.

However, it was former Thistle striker that grabbed the early headlines Chris Dallas giving the Glens the lead on 2 minutes after he got the jump on a defender to guide a low driven corner kick from Ryan Borris into the net from close range.

Glens continued to press and a couple of good chances in difficult conditions went a-begging. Midway through the half keeper David Miller, making his debut, pulled off a fine save after Darren McGill curled his free kick from 20 yards round the Jags wall.

Luck deserted the hosts on 27 minutes when a free kick floated into the box and headed back out was met by Barry Devine to lash a low drive that thundered off the base of the post the shock wave ridding the goal net of its host of raindrops – but they would return!

Glenafton responded with a special goal both in terms of build-up play and in finishing. Borris deep in his half launched the ball upfield where Joe Andrew headed it down into the path of Dallas who quickly supplied Kyle McAusland on the overlap wide on the right. Although his cross from the dead-ball line was headed clear at the near post the ball was killed on his chest by Cameron Marlow on the 18 yard line, flicked over his head with his left foot and after doing an about turn killed the ball again on his left thigh before swivelling and lashing a left foot volley beyond the reach of the keeper and into the corner of the net. Glens two up on 28 minutes.

Three minutes later it was 3-0 following a superbly struck free-kick by Darren McGill sending the ball well wide of the left hand-side of the wall before curling violently into the right hand corner of the net giving the keeper no chance of getting a hand to it.

On 35 minutes the Glens extended their lead with another cracking goal. McAusland deep in his own half fired a long ball up the middle of the park where Joe Andrew sandwiched between two defenders trapped the ball and turned one defender and before the other could close him down cracked an unstoppable shot from 18 yards out that threatened to uproot the net from its hooks. H/T East Kilbride 0 Glens 4

Credit to Thistle they continued to plug away at the Showpark. Miller made a splendid one-handed save from Dallas and although the Glens recovered the ball and presented the striker with a second bite at the cherry he was flagged offside as he slipped the ball into net.  At the other end a Ross Gillan header tested keeper Brian McGarrity before Aaron Connolly’s free kick from distance whizzed over the bar.

Thistle were reduced to 10 men on 68 minutes after Ryan Carnwath earned a second yellow card and yet they continued to give a good account of themselves and fashion some decent half chances.

Glens too created some good chances Marlow was deemed offside when he headed home a McAusland from close range and the same player got on the end of David Gray’s ball into the box only for the header to go inches over the bar. Gray then rifled a free kick just wide of the post. F/T  East Kilbride 0 Glens 4

Glenafton Athletic were saddened to learn soon before kick-off that striker Mick McCann’s father had passed away. A minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect for Mr McCann and our thoughts go out to Mick and his family at this sad time.

The hosts came close to opening scoring after some neat interplay at the corner of the box ending with Scott Anson whipping the ball into the goalmouth where Sean McKenzie flick goal-bound only for keeper Brian McGarrity to get down low and push the ball round the post for a corner-kick.

The visitors responded through a long-range shot from Ryan Borris that whizzed past the post. Back came Cumnock through a quick break down the right ended and the ball clipped to McKenzie to fire from 18 yards out only for McGarrity to deny the on-loan Ayr United striker again.

A Glens attack down the right was broken down and the ‘Nock defenders began to knock the ball about in short passes before a long ball was played across park only for the alert Darren McGill to intercept , skip past the intended recipient before finding his footing and as other defenders closed in drilled a low powerful shot from 18 yards into the corner of the net before the keeper at full stretch.

Cumnock came within a whisker of drawing level after Anson’s floated free-kick into the box as headed against the box. At the other end Joe Andrew warmed the keeper’s hands with a shot from 20 yards and soon after Alan Cairns repeated the feat. Back up the park and McGarrity finger-tipped a vicious shot over the bar.

His counterpart Darren Johnstone equalled that save as he leapt to push Ryan McChesney’s goal bound header over the bar. McGarrity replied with another agile save from a close range angled shot from Anson. A flick on by McKenzie was gathered by McRobbie and he looked certain to equalise as he burst into the box only for Cairns (left) to execute a goal saving tackle of the highest order.

With minutes remaining Cumnock appeared to be have been rewarded for their efforts when Paul Burns headed home a free kick from close range only for his celebrations to be cut short after the assistant linesman flagged for an infringement.

Glenafton closed the year with another gritty performance to secure a 1-0 win over Kilwinning and three more points to maintain their 2nd place position in the Premier Division fours points behind Rob Roy with a game in hand.

The visitors enjoyed the early pressure forcing a number of corner kicks that more often and not were won consistently by the aerial power of the Glens defence. Midway through the half and a Buffs free kick from just outside the box looked goal bound only for keeper Brian McGarrity to pull off a great save and push the ball round the post for another corner that came to nothing. The home side’s best chance up until to that time had fell to Joe Andrew after his close range shot was blocked in a crowded box. On 25 minutes the striker found himself in the same position when a free kick was floated into the box and Ryan McChesney outjumped the centre back to head the ball down and there was Joe on the edge of the six yard box to lash the ball past keeper Adam Strain.

aa_a_goal01

Joe Andrew puts Glens ahead

The home side took heart and Ryan Borris’s corner kick saw Strain punch the ball from under his bar and McChesney’s effort to bury the loose ball blocked; his second attempt was foiled by a crunching well-timed tackle from Ricky Hanvey that had home appeals for a penalty waved away. The Buffs appeal for a hand ball by Craig Menzies in the Glens box suffered the same fate soon after. H/T Glens 1 Buffs 0

Play in the second half ebbed and flowed from end to end with half chances coming and going. Midway through the half McGarrity pulled of another stuffing save to tip a powerful angled shot from Kenny Hogg over the bar. Both sides used up their quota of substitutes and Buffs were doing most of the pressing  in the closing stages with former Glenaftom midfielder Findlay Frye the driving force as they tried to salvage a point. They  came close to getting caught out with a couple of Glens breaks upfield both of which saw Chris Dallas set up Mick McCann but Strain was his equal on both occasions. The keeper almost paid the price for running far out of his box to punt a long ball upfield only for David Gray to gather it and from deep in his own half come within a whisker of finding the empty net. With the game now in time added-on the Buffs won a free kick 25 yards from goal and Carlo Monti’s strike hit the raised arm of Darren McGill to earn the visitors a spot-kick. Up stepped Ben Lewis (who had scored from the spot in the corresponding fixture at Abbey Park) however Brian McGarrity (who had saved a penalty at Troon last week) dived down low to his left to push the ball away and  the loose ball mopped up by Menzies just before the referee blew for full time . The visitors created the first opening after Mick McCann laid the ball off for Ryan Borris to surge forward and slip the ball back to McCann to fire a shot from the edge of the box that sneaked past the far post.  Both keepers dealt comfortably with shots from distance from Dean Keenan and Borris respectively.

Glens began to a get a grip on the game and Darren McGill made excellent progress down the left flank, having collected the ball from Cairns and then playing a classy one-two with McCann, before squaring the ball into the box for Joe Andrew only for Keenan to get a foot in before he could shoot for goal. On the right flank Kyle McAusland and Borris combined to pick out Andrew in the box who rolled the ball back to Park and his goal bound shot was deflected past the post by Keenan.  The corner kick was floated to the back post where a McCann header sent the ball back across the face of goal to be gathered by Ryan McChesney only to be bundled of the ball by Gavin Collins and the danger cleared. A low driven free kick by Borris from the edge of the box caused a moment of panic in the Troon defence after Park dummied the ball and it then deflected off the boot of a defender before Semple did well to block and then hold at the second attempt. McAusland whipped a ball from wide into the six yard box where McCann got the jump on two defenders only for his header to crash off the bar with the keeper beaten.

At the other end in a rare Troon attack striker Adam Forsyth pounced on a through ball from Muir before holding of a defender to drill a low shot from 20 yards that lacked the power to test McGarrity. Back came Glens and after some good build up play McGill’s effort from distance trundled wide of the post. Soon after McGill gathered a great pass from Cameron Marlow then executed an excellent one-two with Andrew before tearing down the left-wing leaving Spence lumbering in his wake and bursting into the box only for an outstretched foot of Semple blocking his close range shot. aa_a_cameronmarlow00Both sides earned corner-kicks in the opening exchange with Troon’s causing little bother while Glens was met at the near post Ally Parke and his glancing header saw the ball flash across the face of goal and behind at the back post. The visitors made the breakthrough on 56 minutes after some determined build up play. McCann pounced on a weak headed clearance by Collins and then skipped past the same player before hurdling Keenan’s lunge and feeding Andrew to then play it into the path of Borris on the over-lap down the right where the midfielder advanced to the bye line before cutting the ball across the face of goal for Cameron Marlow to get the jump on a static defender and slam the ball home from a few yards out.

Two minutes later and the visitors were presented with a great opportunity to draw level. Forsyth whipped in a cross from the right which was cut out by the head of Craig Menzies at the near post sending the ball looping to the far end of the box where Evan Maley headed it high back into the air and as Jordan Muir and McAusland prepared to continue the game of head-tennis the pair clashed and the referee adjudged the Glens defender’s actions were worthy of awarding the hosts a spot kick and earning McAusland a red card. Once the stoor settled Chris McKnight stepped up and although he struck the ball well Brian McGarrity dived to his right and pushed the ball away for Park to clear the danger.

The 10 men gave as good as they got although chances were now thinner on the ground. The hosts enjoyed a good spell of pressure and pushed for a late equaliser. Ross Robertson skewed a header wide of the post and Keenan had a free-kicked punched cleanly away by McGarrity. In the last action of the game Troon won another free kick at the corner of the box. It appeared Keenan would try again but instead he left it for McKnight and although he struck the ball sweetly, McGarrity was more than his match again. F/T Troon 0 Glens 1

Glenafton progressed to the 4th round of the Scottish Junior Cup after ahard fought yet well-deserved win over Dundee Violet. The visitors enjoyed long periods of possession with Joe Andrew and Mick McCann going close early before McCann then had a goal chalked off for offside. The home side were reduced to 10 men on 19 minutes after the referee considered striker Kevin Scott’s challenge on Kyle McAusland worthy of a red card.

Glens continued to press and when defender Kit Bremner barged Mick McCann off the ball in the box the referee instantly pointed to the spot and the Glens’ striker dusted himself down before slamming the penalty past keeper Gary Thaine to put the visitors ahead on 28 minutes.

Mick McCann slots home the spot kick

Five minutes later Andrew’s effort whizzed inches over the bar and Thaine saved well from Ally Park after the Glens midfielder powered his way into the box. Violet, having lost their lone front man, were struggling to seriously threaten the Glens goal. However in the last action of the half Dale Hart engineered their best chance of the half after giving a couple of defenders the slip and drilling a low angled shot that keeper Brian McGarrity and McAusland combined to clear. The second half continued in a similar vein to the first with the Glens controlling the play and patiently trying to find an opening against the 10 dogged Dundonians that were still very much in the game.  On the hour mark Thaine saved a close-range header from McCann and soon after Glens earned another corner-kick. Ryan Borris’s kick from the right was cleared at the near post before the midfielder recovered the ball and returned it to the back post where it was cleared by Ryan Digman, sending the ball high into the air. Darren McGill at the corner of the box met the ball first time on the drop and thundered a shot that flew over the heads of a clutch of players from both sides including that of keeper Thaine, who could only look on as  ball battered off the inside of the post and into the net. The visitors now two up on 67 minutes.

Two minutes later and defender Ben Middleton did enough to prevent Borris from winning the ball at the back post as the Glens pressed for a third.  On 75 minutes the home side came close to halving the deficit after substitute George Duncan broke into the box and drilled a low powerful drive that pulled off a fine save from the legs of keeper McGarrity. Back up the park and Thaine matched his counterpart after Andrew turned two defenders in the six yard box before the keeper’s legs blocked his shot at goal and then kept his cool to push McCann’s effort to bury the rebound off the line.  The keeper then denied McCann twice more as he was well placed to deal with the striker’s headers from deep in the box.  Violet finished with a brief flurry forcing McGarrity to block a shot from Digman and then push Duncan’s effort past the post before the Glens cleared the corner kick and progressed to the 4th round.
