Glenafton made two changes to the eleven that started against Auchinleck Talbot last Saturday with Lyall Holding and Jordan Allan replacing Jamie Taggart and Kyle Fraser making his first start for the club, since signing from Ayr United U18. On the bench was fellow Ayr United U18 team-mate David Craig, signed in midweek.

Former Glenafton defender Chris Meikle was missing from Shotts line-up.

Shotts kicked off against a cold strong wind from the east albeit on a sun-drenched bowling green pitch. However, wind assisted Glenafton were soon breaking forward in numbers with former Shotts Junior Cup winner Shuggy Kerr and Evan Maley leading the line.

Ross Lindsay clipped a corner-kick from the left the centre of the goalmouth on the outskirts of the six-yard box for Ryan McCubbin only for his header to deflect off Taylor Evans and bounce wide for another corner. Lindsay lofted this one high towards the far side of the six-yard box tempting keeper Sandy Thomson to come off his and leap from the six-yard line only to fail to get a finger-tip the ball which descended and bounced at the corner of the six-yad box for the quick-thinking McCubbin to rush forward before hooking it back to Ollie Rowe who drilled a low shot from 8 yards out which deflected off Evans and fell for Michael Mullen to drive a low shot from 4 yards past the keeper and two defenders, including one on the goal-line, and into the net   Glens 1-0 on 6 minutes.

Play began to ebb back and forth with the only chances coming from long throw-ins at either end both of which were mopped up by each defence in turns.

Soon after the chances on show were elevated to corner kicks.  For Shotts, Adam Hunter curled the kick deep into the six-yard box where keeper David Markey leapt to take a touch and deny Rico de Marco a close-range header before Mullen hoofed the loose ball upfield for Jamie Taggart to chase down and win a throw which was gathered by Mullen to win a corner on the left!   Lindsay floated it high into the heart of a packed goalmouth and although Kerr won the aerial battle his header soared high over the bar.

Play now raged back and forth with Maley and Taggart looking lively for the Glens, nevertheless, chances at either end were thin on the ground, perhaps of greater concern to the visitors with the wind at their back.

Alistair Martin fired a low shot from 25 yards that deflected off Kyle Fraser sending the ball wide on the right to be chased down by Evans on the bye-line and as Jared Willet closed in he whipped the ball high into the six-yard box where Fraser was in place to head the danger clear.

Midway through the half Maley picked up a pass inside the Shotts’ half before slipping the ball to Lindsay who in turn released Taggart tight on the right to drive down the left only for his cross from the corner flag to be deflected wide. Keeper Thomson leapt high from a yard off his line to safely clutch the ball as Rowe waited to pounce at the back post.

Maley initiated another attack after threading a ball between two defenders for Kerr to gather and drive down the left to the bye-line and although Torrance was on his heels he whipped a low cross to the near post for the incoming Mullen but Thomson was quick off his mark to scoop up the ball.

Soon after Maley was the instigator again beating Jack Gordon to a loose ball and holding off the midfielder to drive to the edge of the ‘D’ only for his shot to take a slight deflection and Thomson did well to stop the corner on the bye-line.

On 33 minutes Shotts won a corner on the left which was floated into the goalmouth where Markey leapt to block with both hands before recovering the loose ball, as the air-borne Torrance threatened.  

Soon after a free-kick from wide on the right, close to the bye-line, was floated  to the far side of the box for the unmarked Barry Eley to head the ball high towards corner of six-yard box where it was won in the air by Kerr who fell awkwardly from de Marco’s challenge.

Glens then enjoyed a good spell of possession in their opponents’ half but converting this into chances proved more difficult. On 44 minutes Mullen picked up a pass from Taggart on the outskirts of the box and as Adam Hunter closed in, he curled a shot that dipped wide of the far post.

The final chance of the half fell to Shotts from a corner on the right that Gordon floated to the back post where Evans leapt to send a looping header that dipped inches over the crossbar, although the leaping Markey took no chances and had it covered with a leap and an outstretched arm.

Shotts made a double substitution at the break with Adam Hunter and Jack Gordon making way for Ally Small and Ben Richford.

Glens kicked off, against the wind, and won an early corner on the right which was curled high into the six-yard box which Thomson cleanly collected under pressure from Rowe on the goal-line.

Willet launched a long ball down the right for Mullen in a chase with Torrance and on overtaking the Shotts defender at the edge of the box he forced the keeper to rush from his line which in turn forced Mullen to lob the ball from 16 yards out which sailed over the bar, as the Glens striker was floored by the keeper’s slide tackle – a long stare to the assistant referee fell on deaf eyes!

Taggart and Maley continued to look lively as the visitors just edged the possession play which perhaps forced Shotts into another substitution as Joshua Gracie made way for Daniel Burns on 56 minutes. A minute later Paul Byrne from wide on the left whipped a ball into box, which took a big bounce over the head of Taggart and fell for the inrushing de Marco and the coming together of the two players ended with the forward being sent tumbling to the ground. Up stepped captain Alistair Martin to slot home the penalty, sending Markey the wrong way and the ball into the right-hand corner of the net. Shotts 1 Glens 1 on 58 minutes.

With their tails up Shotts won back to back corners from left and right respectively that were stoutly defended by the visitors. The home side introduced fresh legs on 62 minutes with Andrew Duffy replacing Barry Eley.

Shotts were upfield in numbers when Lindsay nicked the ball from Sexton to burst through the middle into their opponents half and although his attempt to pick out Cammy Ross wide on the left was intercepted, Maley recovered the ball and picked out Taggart on the left to drive forward and cut inside to the edge of the box only for Sexton to rob the ball.

Soon after another Shotts attack was snuffed out with Taggart and Maley leading the counter-attack that concluded with the former driving deep into the left-hand side of the Shotts box only for his attempt to square the ball for the incoming Mullen to be blocked by Evans at the expense of a corner kick. Lindsay floated the ball high into the six yard box for the leaping Kerr but keeper Thomson leapt higher and plucked the ball out the air.

Midway through the half the Glens made a tactical change with defensive midfielder Ryan McCubbin replaced by attacking midfielder Chris Erskine who was immediately in the thick of things, switching play from the right to Taggart on the left to cut inside Sexton only to sky his shot from the edge of the ‘D’.

Back came Glens through Erskine playing a one-two with Mullen on the right, before driving inside and picking out Maley, who in turn slipped the ball to Taggart on the left-hand corner of the box to take Sexton out of play and complete a glorious one-two with Maley who then progressed to the corner of the six-yard box before squaring the ball across the face of goal but neither Mullen or Kerr could connect.

Glens continued to press but could not break down a well drilled defence. Ross burst down the right to the edge of the box before drilling a diagonal pass for Kerr on the penalty spot only for Duffy to intercept. Mullen then chased down a ball to progress to the ‘D’ and with three defenders in his path he lobbed the ball over their heads only for Thomson to comfortably collect on the six-yard line.

On 75 minutes Shotts countered with a powerful run from Evans through the middle, showing Erskine and Taggart a clean pair of heels, before lobbing ball from 25 yards that flew over Markey’s head and the bar.

On 81 minutes Glens brought midweek signing David Craig on for Ross Lindsay.

Soon after a Shotts free kick was won in the air by Duffy at the edge of the box but the header drifted wide of the far post.

On 83 minutes Shotts brought on Liam Craig for Rico de Marco while Glens brought on Ryan Walker for Jamie Taggart.

Cammy Ross burst down the left, weaving past Sexton, before whipping a ball into the box for Walker to gather at the far end only for his shot to flash wide of target.

Glens continued to press before Shotts enjoyed a spell of possession in and around the Glens box. In the closing the minute Burns from wide on right drilled a low ball right across face of goal, beyond the reach of Markey at near post to pick out two Shotts players at back post, only for Fraser to get a crucial touch and Rowe to clear the danger.

Back came Glens launching a ball upfield for Mullen to gather and driving forward, slipping wide of Sexton to blast a shot from 25 yards that Thomson pushed wide before tumbling to ground. Ross gathered the loose ball and picked out Erskine to roll it back out to the edge of box for Maley, to curl a shot from the 18 yard line that drifted wide of the far post.

Glenafton made two changes to the eleven that started at Largs last Saturday with Ryan Walker and Chris Erskine making way for Ryan McCubbin and Evan Maley.

Auchinleck’s starting eleven included former Glens midfielder Michael Wardrope.

The match kicked off in atrocious conditions with a strong wind blowing the heavy rain across the length of the pitch and as such there were few chances on show.

Auchinleck broke the deadlock on 31 minutes, after a free kick from wide on the left was curled to the back post where the ball was knocked across into a packed six-yard box for Euan Thomson to score from close range.

Glenafton drew level 5 minutes later after Ross Lindsay floated a free-kick from tight on the right, close to the corner flag, to a busy back post and where Jordan Allan won the aerial battle to send a downward header bounce into the net.

The home side came close to taking the lead after Michael Mullen gathered the ball on the outskirts of the Auchinleck box to forge his way past defenders before curling a low shot from 20 yards that beat the keeper at full stretch only to bounce off the base of the post.

The rain relented at the start of the second half and Ross Lindsay’s free kick dipped over the Auchinleck bar while soon after Cammy Ross a powerful run through numbers only to be stripped off the ball and as Lyall Holding caught Austin Sime as they challenged for the loose ball, the referee deeming that Holding’s slide tackle was worthy of a red card, Glens down to 10 men just short of the hour mark.

The rained returned and the 10 men were still posing a threat with Shuggy Kerr driving into the left-hand side of the box to drill a low angled shot only for keeper Corey Armour to advance to the six- yard line to block with his instep.

At the other end, Neil Schoneville slipped a defence splitting pass into the left hand side of the box for the inrushing Thomson to take a touch before blasting a shot into the sid-netting.

Two minutes from time Neil McPherson headed home an in-swinging corner only for the referee to have blown for an infringement beforehand. However on 90 minutes a Talbot tumble in the box earned the visitors a spot-kick that Euan Thomson slammed into the net and seal the points.

Glenafton made two changes to the eleven that started against Benburb last Saturday with Ryan McCubbin and Sam McKee making way for Ryan Walker and Cammy Ross. On the bench was midweek signing Kyle Fraser, on loan from Ayr United U18 until end of the season.,

In the Largs line-up was Liam McVey junior, son of former Glens defender, Liam McVey senior.

The visitors made a lively start after Ryan Walker outleapt Liam McVey in the centre circle and his header was gathered by Shuggy Kerr who gave Liam McVey and Stuart Faulds the slip before clipping the ball forward for Chris Erskine to chase and although he left Ryan McCreath in his wake, keeper Matt Johnson was quick to collect the ball some ten yards from his line.

The home side responded with Travis Stacey gathering a pass on the right-hand side of the box before drilling a low angled shot that keeper David Markey got down low to hold as Jamie Martin looked to pounce on any spillage.

Back came Glens as Cammy Ross chased the ball down the right with Conor Bradley in close attention before whipping the ball from the bye-line to the back post where Kerr’s glancing header, under pressure from Laurie McMaster, drifted wide of the post.  

On 8 minutes a bizarre interlude followed as Jamie Martin had to leave the park convinced his nose was bleeding and on his way to the dug-out the referee had requested that Kieran Brady also seek attention in the dug-out. On returning to field the game was referee was delayed as a Largs player, near the centre-circle, had to tie his laces, while a substitute then run up the touch-line with the instructions, clearly heard, to tell the keeper to get down and tie his laces. Soon after Martin returned to play with his No. 7 shirt replaced with No. 8 shirt while Brady returned with a number-less shirt!

Play continued to flow back and forth with few chances on show.

Michael Mullen lobbed the ball high over Ryan McCreath’s head into the Largs box as Erskine burst down the right before cutting inside the box to meet the bouncing ball only for his lob  to fly over the keeper, rooted inside the six-yard box, but well over the bar too.

At the other end Largs enjoyed a good spell of pressure beginning with another low angled shot from Stracey deep in the box which bulged the side netting. Soon after Bradley, from wide on the left, whipped the ball across the goal mouth for the inrushing Cole Ojungo only for his header to fly over the bar.  Ryan Deas then fired a free kick from the left into the six yard box where the leaping McCreath just failed to get his head to the ball which then slipped out of Markey’s hands and Ojungo’s follow up shot was then blocked on the line by Jared Willet, before the defender hoofed the ball high into the air and eventually cleared from the box.

Glens countered through Mullen clipping the ball from the centre circle upfield for Kerr only for Bradley to intercept with a header and McCreath then head the ball high into the air from the edge of the ‘D’ before Erskine trapped the descending ball magnificently and squared it through the gap between Stracey and Stuart Faulds for Michael Mullen to take a touch for lashing an unstoppable shot into the net from 25 yards. Largs 0 Glens 1 on 23 minutes.

The visitors pressed again with Ryan Walker clipping a ball high up the left for Kerr to chase and although he outpaced the back-tracking McCreath, keeper Johnston sprinted from his line to the corner of the box to pluck the ball out of the air.

At the other end Glens lost possession allowing Faulds to feed Bradley wide on the left before pushing forward and whipping the ball into a busy box which fell for Jamie Martin to drill low and hard into the net. Largs 1 Glens 1 on 30 minutes.

Largs continued to press, winning a corner on the right which Deas curled to the near post only for McCreath’s diving header to sail over the bar.

At the other end Ross chased down a ball into the right-hand side of the box with Bradley tight on his heels and then holding him back with both hands in full view of the assistant referee, but no action was taken.

On 38 minutes Faulds brought down Mullen a few yards from the left-hand corner of the box. Ross Lindsay curled the free-kick over the two-man wall into the six-yard box where McCreath was positioned between Kerr and Ollie Rowe while keeper Johnston was rooted to the line as the ball finished up in the net.  As Glens celebrated and Largs heads went down the referee walked towards the centre circle only to notice the far side assistant referee raising his flag, presumably for offside. Shuggy Kerr was convinced it was an own goal and therefore could not have been offside. After some discussion the goal apparently was disallowed for a foul on the keeper, despite the keeper staying on his line and not claiming any foul!

Soon after McCreath fouled Kerr tight on the left touchline, a few yards from the bye-line, from where Walker floated the kick towards a packed near post only for the ball to dip over the bar.

In the closing action of the half McVey countered for Largs and pushed to the outskirts of the box before lashing a ferocious shot that whizzed over the junction of the far post and crossbar.

Largs kicked off and were first to threaten after a Ojungo gathered the ball inside his own half before bursting up the right with Willet giving chase and then swerved inside between Willet and Walker to progress to edge of the box and crack a thunderous shot that sounded as if it had cracked the crossbar. Martin pounced on the loose ball to try and hook it into the net only for Markey to race back to his goal-line and dive to hold the ball tightly.

The home side took the lead on 55 minutes after the lively Martin broke up the left before cutting into the box short of the bye-line and then threaded a diagonal back-pass between two defenders for the incoming Liam McVey to pick his spot from 12 yards. Largs 2 Glens 1

Soon after Glens made a change with Ryan Walker making way for Evan Maley.

Play ebbed back and forth with the home side carrying the greater threat as Glens struggled to penetrate the Largs box, other than long throws.

Both sides brought on fresh legs with Glens bringing on Jamie Taggart for Chris Erskine while Largs replaced Ojungo, Martin and Stracey with Will Sewell, David Ramsay and Blair Devine.

However, the pattern of play remained much the same as before until Largs extended their lead on 83 minutes with the substitutes making their mark. Sean McLeod gathered the ball wide on the left just inside the Largs half before tearing up the wing with Mullen on his heels and some 15 yards short of the bye-line he squared the ball into the box for Brady but with Rowe blocking his path he rolled it back out of the box for Devine to drill a low diagonal shot from 20 yards which took a sight deflection and fell for David Ramsay to poke home from the outskirts of the 6 yard box. In the closing minutes the Glens brought on Kyle Fraser and Ryan McCubbin for Lyall Holding and Ross Lindsay.

The home side continued to look dangerous and although Glens won a late corner kick which was scrambled clear and Largs broke upfield with Devine only for his attempt to pick out Ramsay in the box to be intercepted by Fraser. The final whistle blew soon after.

Glenafton made four changes to the eleven that started against Drumchapel United last Saturday with Lewis Currie (injury), Craig Pettigrew (injury), Michael Mullen (unavailable) and Jamie Taggart making way for Lyall Holding, Jordan Allan, Sam McKee and Chris Erskine.

Meanwhile congratulations to goalkeeper David Markey on making made his 100th start for the Glens.

In the Benburb dug-out was former Glenafton striker David Winters, now joint manager of the Bens along with his brother Robbie Winters while in their starting eleven was former Glens midfielder Gary Fraser.

Benburb kicked off on a sun-kissed Loch Park albeit it was a bit chilly in the shade. The visitors made the early running and on 5 minutes won a free kick on the edge of the Glens box after the ball struck a grounded Ryan McCubbin on the arm. Declan McDonald blasted the ball into the leaping six-man wall and Gary Fraser pounced on the loose ball only for his shot from 22 yards to drift high and wide of the target.

Back came Bens through Reece McGuire breaking into the left hand-side of the Glens box before drilling a low-angled shot that the outrushing keeper David Markey pushed wide for a corner kick. Gary Fraser floated the ball into a busy goal-mouth only to be headed clear by McCubbin, however the visitors quickly recovered the ball and from wide on the right Ryan Kane whipped the ball to the near post where Robbie Halliday’s header, under pressure from Lyall Holding, flew inches over the bar.

On 10 minutes the Bens won a free kick, wide on the left just inside the Glens half, from where Gary Fraser launched the ball high into the heart of the box and although Alan Lithgow won the aerial battle his header drifted wide of the post.

Glens then enjoyed some possession in the Bens half albeit without breaching their box.

However, on 19 minutes the home side won a free kick, on the right some 10 yards inside the Bens half, which Ross Lindsay floated high into box where Ollie Rowe outjumped Ryan Kane on the penalty spot to power a downward header past Gary Fraser on the six-yard line only for the keeper Glen Cameron to get down low and push the ball wide before Lithgow hoofed it upfield to prevent the corner-kick.

Soon after a Lindsay’s corner kick was headed clear as Glens continued to press.  Chris Erskine then slipped a pass deep into the box for Sam McKee to gather before drilling a low angled shot from 10 yards only for Cameron to come off his line to kick the ball clear as Shuggy Kerr closed in.

At the other end Gary Fraser’s corner kick from the right was headed clear by Lindsay at the near post and fell for Kane on the outskirts of the box only for his shot to fly well wide of the goal.

Glens responded through McCubbin and Cammy Ross combining on the right before clipping a ball high into the box and although Kerr got between two defenders his acrobatic attempt sent the ball sky high before descending into the six-yard box for the keeper to collect at the post.

Play continued to flow back and forth.

Bens came close only for Ollie Smith’s shot from 25 yards to whiz inches over the bar while Glens responded down the right with Ross squaring the ball across a busy goalmouth for the inrushing Kerr and McKee only for the keeper to get down low and punch the ball to safety.  

Soon after, Kerr and Robbie Halliday challenged for the ball on the outskirts of the Bens box and it popped into the air away from the box and over Gary Fraser’s head and as he turned to try and clear the ball he caught Jared Willet with a sore one on the back of the ankle. The referee with a clear view instantly pulled out a red card and despite his pleas and those of his team-mates, the former Glens player reluctantly left the field on 39 minutes. The free kick came to nothing.

The closing action of the half saw McKee gather the ball deep in his own half and drive to the half way line and feed Erskine who then drifted wide and released Ross down the right before he rolled it back to Lindsay on the outskirts of the box only to overhit his attempt to pick out Kerr and McKee on the penalty spot, along with two defenders.

The home side won an early corner on the right, which was clipped high into the goalmouth by McKee only for keeper Cameron to leap head and shoulders above defenders and attackers alike to cleanly clutch the ball.

Bens countered with a McDonald angled shot from deep in the Glens box which was deflected wide by Rowe. The corner was floated from the right to the unmarked Lorenzo Giovanazzi at the back post only for his header to drift wide of target. Soon after Shaun Fraser broke down the right before whipping the ball into the goalmouth only for Markey to leap and clutch the ball from under the bar.

Back came Glens and after a corner from the left had been cleared the ball was gathered by Walker at the corner of the penalty box to curl a high ball into a busy goalmouth beyond attackers and defenders alike, including the keeper 2 yards off his line, before dipping at the junction of the bar and post.

The home side broke the deadlock on 58 minutes after McKee was tripped on the right between the touch line and the penalty box. Ross Lindsay curled the free kick just to the left of the two-man wall before the ball dipped over defenders and attackers strung along the six-yard line, including skimming over the head of the leaping McKee, before taking a bounce two yards from the goal-line and into the far side of the goal with the keeper stranded. Celebrations were enjoyed by players, dug-out and supporters.

The Bens pushed forward from the kick-off and it was Lindsay that stripped them of the ball at the edge of the Glens box before clipping it towards the centre circle for Erskine to chase down and slip it wide to Kerr on the overlap only for Giovanazzi to intercept and knock the ball into his own box, however Kerr never gave up the chase, forcing the keeper to race some 16 yards off his line and launch the ball up the park.

The clearance proved to be the source of Benburb’s equaliser as Reece McGuire chased down ball, wide on the left, only for Lyall Holding to knock it out for a shy.  This was gathered by Ryan McCrone who quickly picked out McGuire, in a tight group of players from both sides on the edge of the box, who took a couple of touches before clipping the ball to the far side of the ‘D’ for the unmarked Ryan Kane with the time and space to push forward and take a touch before lashing a shot past the outrushing Markey and Allan’s attempt to block his shot. The 10 men Bens were level at 1-1 on 60 minutes.

Glens countered as Erskine burst forward and played a slick one-two with Willet overlapping on the left before breaking into the box only for his chip for Kerr to be deflected wide for a corner. McKee floated the kick into goal mouth with Kerr, Rowe and Allan all challenging for the ball only to be scrambled clear by the Bens defence.

Both sides made changes with Bens bringing on Chris Bell for Ollie Smith while Glens brought on Evan Maley for Sam McKee and he was soon in the thick of things as Erskine played a one-two with him, before drilling a low shot from 24 yards which was comfortably held by the keeper.

At the other end Halliday floated a ball deep into the box where the aerial battle between Kane and Rowe saw the ball drop for McDonald to sky his shot high over the bar.

Back came the Glens with Maley breaking down the right to the touchline before clipping the ball to the back post for the inrushing Kerr only for his header to fly wide of target.

On 77 minutes Glens brought on Jamie Taggart for Jared Willet and he was on hand to gather the ball as Markey punched away a Bens a corner kick before bursting down the left only to be fouled on the outskirts of the box. Lindsay lobbed the ball into the busy box and although Kerr, sandwiched between two defenders, won the aerial battle his header flew wide of the back post.

It was the same scenario two minutes later as Ross from tight on the right whipped the ball into the box where Kerr leapt head and shoulders above two defenders to power a header that dipped over the bar.

The home side continued to press without however testing the keeper while the visitors, certainly not settling for a point suffered the same outcome.

Into added time and a frantic finish could not separate the sides.

For the Glens, Lindsay gathered the ball in the middle of the park and played a slick one-two with Kerr to break deep into the box only for his cut back to be deflected wide for a corner which saw the ball bounce about the box for a time before falling safely into the arms of keeper Cameron.

For the Bens, a break down the left saw the ball whipped across the face of goal beyond the reach of defenders and attackers alike to be chased down by substitute Mikey McWilliams only for his shot from a tight angle to whiz wide of the post.

Glens final attack fizzled out before the final whistle was blown.

Glenafton kicked off with the same eleven that started against Beith Juniors last Saturday.  The first half finished goal-less with Drumchapel having created the bulk of the chances on show while at the other end Glenafton’s claim for a penalty kick, following a hefty challenge on Jamie Taggart, were waved away. The visitors were forced to make a change with Lyall Holding replacing Lewis Currie who sustained a serious injury and was stretchered off the pitch.

The home side broke the deadlock on 54 minutes after a ball from wide on the right was floated into the box where Argyll McCoist met it on the six yard to bullet a header home. The striker bagged his brace on 90 minutes from the penalty spot to complete the scoring.

In the Beith dug-out was former Glenafton manager Mark Roberts, joining the current league champions at the start of the season as assistant to boss Chris Strain.

Glenafton kicked off but quickly lost possession allowing Abe Osemeke to progress to the outskirts of the box where he was brought down and up stepped Carlo Monti to whip the ball wide of the right-hand side of the four-man wall only for it to drift wide of the far post too.

At the other end Hugh Kerr was fouled wide on the right, some 10 yards from the box. Ross Lindsay clipped the ball high into the box and as keeper Scott McLellan rushed to edge of six-yard box he fumbled the ball sending it wide for a corner kick, which was scrambled clear at the near post.

Back came Glens as Kerr chased down a ball into the Beith half with three defenders on his tail, down to two by the time he reached the penalty spot, only to lose his balance as he overstretched to get a shot and tumbled in the six-yard box.

At the other end Monti floated a free kick from the left, just inside the Glens, into a packed box where Scott Rough leapt for a free header but sent the ball well wide from yards out. Soon after Callum Graham chased down a long ball into the box and although keeper David Markey won the race to punch it away Monti snapped it up at the corner of box before driving to the bye-line and squaring it across the face of the goal for Graham but couldn’t get a clean strike under pressure from Ollie Rowe.

Indeed, Ross Lindsay cleared the ball upfield for Jamie Taggart to hunt down and together with Cammy Ross he combined to win a corner, which Ross curled high to the back post where Lewis Currie got the jump on a clutch of defenders to win the header only for it to drop in the hands of the keeper.

Back came Glens as the lively Taggart from the corner flag, with Jude McLymont in close attention, whipped the ball to the far corner of the penalty box, where the incoming Jared Willet gathered, only for his shot to be blocked and cleared.

Play continued to go back and forth before Glenafton broke the deadlock on 17 minutes. Michael Mullen switched play from tight on the left to Cammy Ross on the right to drive inside towards the ‘D’ taking a sore one and fell badly, sandwiched between two Beith players. However, Jamie Taggart, from within a pocket of four Beith players, pounced on the loose ball to rifle it from 17 yards out, beyond the reach of McLellan and into the net for his first Glenafton goal jointly celebrated with his team mates.

The home side enjoyed a good spell with Ryan McCubbin and Lindsay managing the midfield while the pace of Taggart and Ross continued to torment Beith. Ross broke down the right and floated a ball into a packed goalmouth where Kerr won the aerial battle to bullet a header just wide of the back post. Mullen then held off Paul Frize and gave Lewis Lovering the slip before drilling a low shot from 25 yards that drifted wide of the left post.

At the other end Osemeke cut in from the left and tried to pick out Monti in the box only for Currie to intercept and clear the ball only for it to be instantly fired back by a Beith player, forcing keeper David Markey to leap and tip the ball over bar. Robbie Scullion curled the corner kick from the left to the near post where Ross leapt to head it high into the air and over the bar. The corner that followed as tipped over the bar by Markey while the third corner in a row was overhit and float out of play.

Beith continued to press through a Monti free-kick from the left that was floated towards near post where Osemeke won the aerial battle and his downward header bounced up from the six-yard line, only for Markey’s outstretched arm to tip the ball from under the bar, which was then headed back toward goal by Graham only for Rowe to head it clear of the box.

On 29 minutes Beith were forced to make a change with Alan Docherty replacing the injured Calum Graham.

Back came Glens as Lindsay clipped a free kick from the left on the outskirts of the box to the edge of the six-yard box and although the ball was scrambled clear it was quickly retrieved by Ross to burst down the right and fire the ball into the goalmouth where the keeper fumbled and Rough hoofed it clear as Kerr closed in.

A Beith attack was mopped up and Mullen who quickly launched the ball upfield over the heads of a clutch of defenders for Taggart to chase with Kerr for company. McClellan rushed out the penalty box to tackle Taggart and as he tried to retrieve the loose ball Max Brown pulled him to the ground, a yard outside the box. No response from the referee but soon after he was alert to Mullen being brought down by Lovering and Frize for good measure. Although Lindsay’s free kick from 24 yards beat the wall it fell comfortably into hands of McLellan.

Soon after, Lindsay floated the ball to the outskirts of six-yard box where Mullen had drifted behind the defenders but his header lacked the power and direction and was cleared by Rough

Back came Beith as Brown played the ball up the right for Monti but with Currie and Willet in close attendance he was forced to retreat into his own half with Willet still on his tail, both players tussled before Monti lashed out an caught Willet on the face, fortunate to only be shown a yellow card.

For much of the remainder of the half the Glens were on the front foot without creating any chances.

Beith made a change at the brake with Evan Dunne on for Jude McClymont.

Brown fired a free-kick from just inside the Glens half high into a packed box where Pettigrew won the aerial battle sending the ball high into the air while its descent kicked off a scramble that concluded with Willet launching it upfield. Scullion gathered the loose ball just inside the Beith half only for the tenacious Taggart to hunt down his pass back and clip it forward for Michael Mullen to chase, forcing keeper McLellan to race from his goal-line and reached the penalty spot before the Glens striker calmly and confidently lobbed a perfectly weighted ball over the stranded keeper’s head and into the gaping.  Glens 2-0 up on 48 minutes, sparking joyous celebrations.

Played then raged back and forth with neither keeper tested until 55 minutes when Taggart picked up a short pass from Mullen and skipped into the box before drilling a low angled shot the McLellan got down low to hold.

The home side enjoyed a good spell of pressure particularly down the right. On 65 minutes Lindsay gathered the ball in his own half and gave Frize the slip before releasing Taggart down the right who rolled a pass into the right-hand side of the box to match Mullen’s run only for his low angled shot deflected wide by Lovering, while Lindsay’s corner to the near post was headed wide by Docherty.   Glens quickly recovered the ball through Ross and his trademark lung-bursting run down the right ended with his low ball into the box for the inrushing Taggart to be intercepted by Lovering at the expense of another corner. Lindsay lofted this one high into the goal mouth and although Ollie Rowe won the ball in the air it was eventually scrambled clear.

On 68 minutes Beith brought on Ben Lewis for Abraham Osemeke. Soon after they won a free kick on the outskirts of the Glens only for Monti’s effort to be blocked by the leaping defensive wall.

Back came Glens and Kerr outjumped Scullion to nod the ball down to his right for Ross to pounce and burst into the box to unleash a powerful shot that whizzed wide of the post. Soon after Kerr pushed down the right and skipped past Rough into box to square the ball to Mullen and although Lewis intercepted the striker recovered the loose ball and turned on a tanner before cracking a powerful shot from 10 yards and with McLellan diving at full stretch across the goal line the ball battered off the base of the post.

The home side continued to press with Ross bursting down the right and cutting into the box a couple yards from the goal line only for his cross to be blocked by Scullion and deflected wide. Lindsay floated the corner into a packed six-yard box and as it was scrambled clear Kerr’s claim for hand-ball was waved away.

Another spell of play ebbing back and forth followed on 80 minutes by a trio of substitutions, a forced one for the Glens with the injured Cammy Ross replaced with Lyall Holding. As for Beith, a subdued Paul Frize was replaced by Andy Monk while Jordan Stuart made way for Connor O’Donnel.

Taggart burst down the left, for a change, with Rough tracking him into the box and evading the tackle he drilled a low angled shot to the back post only for the diving McLellan to get his finger tips to the ball pushing it wide for a another corner. Lindsay curled this one high into the box and although the keeper leapt with an out-stretched arm he missed the ball and it drifted out wide of the back post.

Beith countered down the right with Monti driving to the bye-line only for his cut-back to be blocked by Currie and then cleared of danger with an overhead kick by Mullen which fell for Taggart to break down the left again and on this occasion his low angled shot from deep in the box was comfortably gathered by the keeper.

Back came Beith with a powerful shot from the edge of the box by Andy Monk that cannoned of Pettigrew and fell for Monti but with a line of 4 red shirts between him and Markey in goal he rolled it back for Lovering at the left hand corner of the box only for it to rebound off the post.

On 85 minutes Glenafton brought on Ryan Walker for Michael Mullen, after another great shift.  After another spell of back and forth play Glens made a double substitution on 90 minutes with the tireless Jamie Taggart and Ross Lindsay making way for Jordan Allan and Finn Monaghan from the Glenafton U20s, the youngster taking a great touch in his first action.

Glenafton made four changes from the eleven that started against Cumnock last Saturday with keeper David Markey returning for stand in keeper Ally Semple while Ollie Rowe (unavailable), Ryan Walker and Jamie Taggart made way for Jordan Allan, Ryan McCubbin and Chris Erskine.

Of course, there are several Glenafton connections with Hurlford with manager Darren Henderson, coach John Dempster and Captain Paul ‘Taz’ McKenzie on their 12th the season at Blair Park following the great Loch Park exodus (aka ‘The Blair Switch Project’) at the start of 2012/13 season. More recently Ross Fisher and Liam Caddis both returned for another spell at Blair Park while former Glens manager and striker Mick McCann sadly suffered a bad injury on his Ford debut at the end of January.

Hurlford kicked-off in the bright sunshine and were first to threaten in the early stages. Paul McKenzie picked up the ball in the centre circle just inside the ‘Ford half before clipping it up the right for Kris Kerr to chase down and cut into the edge of the box to drill a low shot that was well held by former Ford keeper David Markey at his near post. Soon after, the leaping Carter Frew’s header from a corner-kick was cleared off the Glens goal-line by the leaping Craig Pettigrew’s header.

The visitors countered in lethal fashion after Chris Erskine snapped up the ball in the Glens half before driving and weaving through the middle to clip a forward pass to match Michael Mullen’s run into the left-hand side of the box and after a touch or two the former Ford striker slammed a shot from 14 yards that flew past keeper George O’Connor and smashed off the inside of the post to end up in the far corner of the net. Glens 1-0 up on 11 minutes.

Play began to rage and forth with only a few half chances on show, the majority of which fell to the home side. Lewis Morrison and Kerr combined to press their way deep into the box only for Markey to come off his line and smother the ball. Jack Whittaker then breached the Glens box and slipped a ball to Morrison on his left who lashed a low angled shot that beat the advancing Markey only to slip inches wide of the back post. Ford won a couple of corner kicks each of which were defended well.

At the other end Sam McKee burst down the right before squaring into the box for the incoming Erskine only for Frew to intercept and clear the danger. Soon after Erskine stole the ball from a Ford attack on the edge of the Glens box and burst upfield and on reaching the centre circle clipped the ball right for Shuggy Kerr to chase only for his shot to be blocked by the back-tracking defenders.

Back came Hurlford with an attack down the right where the ball was pinged to Morrison to take a touch on the 18-yard line before rolling it wide into the path of the incoming Kris Kerr to slam the ball home from 10 yards into the net past the advancing Markey.  1-1 on 35 minutes.

The Glens responded with McKee’s break into the right-hand side of the Ford box and three yards from the bye-line, with Ben Hughes closing in, he clipped the ball back for the inrushing Mullen only for Ross Love to intercept at the expense of a corner-kick which was cleared.

Two minutes from the break Shuggy Kerr burst into the Ford box leaving defenders in his wake only for keeper O’Connor to rush from his line and block Kerr’s shot on the penalty spot.

During the half-time break heavy dark clouds had gathered over Blair Park and soon after they unloaded their heavy rain, forcing spectators to pack the covered enclosures, while credit to both teams in bravely battling the elements. During this period Glens made another change with Jordan Allan making way for Lyall Holding.

It would be the hour mark before the rain subsided and soon after sun broke through again as play ebbed back and forth.

Glens won a corner kick on the left. McKee played a one-two with Pettigrew at the near post who quickly returned it for McKee to float the ball into the box only for it to be headed clear and gathered by Pettigrew at the corner of the box to curl a shot that flew wide of target.

Hurford countered with an attack down the left only for Kris Kerr to lose control off the ball under pressure from Ross Lindsay leaving Whittaker and Holding to challenge for the loose ball, the young Glens defender adamant he had won the ball, but the referee thought otherwise and awarded Ford a free kick. Lewis Morrison stepped up to whip a stunning free-kick that flew over the heads of the leaping two-man wall and the outstretched arm of the leaping Markey on the centre of his goal line and into the the far corner of the net. Hurlford 2-1 on 68 minutes.

The home side’s tails were up and several good chances came and went in a five-minute spell. Lidlington, from tight on the left, fired a low ball across the face goal for the inrushing forwards at the near post forcing Jared Willet to knock it past the back post as Kris Kerr threatened. The corner was played short and eventually cleared. Hughes, also from tight on the left again, whipped a ball into goalmouth only for Markey to cleanly clutch it from under the bar. Morrison, yes from the left again, lashed a low shot that beat Markey at the near post before slipping wide of the back post.

Some respite for the Glens as Taggart beat Blair Anderson for the ball deep in the Ford box only for keeper O’Connor to rush from his line and dive on the loose ball. Soon after, Taggart was back in the Glens box to win the aerial battle against Morrison to clear the danger.

On 84 minutes Glens brought on Cammy Ross for Ryan McCubbin.

Back came ‘Ford through Anderson breaking down the right and from the corner of the box squared the ball for Kris Kerr to turn and drill a low shot that was well held by Markey. Soon after Whittaker from wide on the left picked out Morrison on the edge of the box at the ‘D’ and as three defenders closed in, he turned and drilled a low shot that beat Markey at the near post, but again another effort drifted just wide of the back post.

Glens countered as Willet switched play from deep on the left to wide on the right for Ross to drive up the touch line before cutting into the box to drill a low angled pass between two defenders which was trapped by Michael Mullen on the six-yard line and with his back to goal with Anderson in close attendance he turned on a tanner and slammed the ball into the net. Hurlford 2 Glens 2 on 88 minutes.

The visitors recovered the ball and Taggart from wide on the left whipped a high cross for Shuggy Kerr at the back post only for the airborne O’Connor to clutch it cleanly and hold it tightly as he crashed to the ground.

With the Glens up in numbers the Ford countered to clinch the winner. Whittaker was released down the left (the away support claiming for offside) and his lung bursting run took him just inside the Glens box and a yard from the bye-line only for his attempt to cut the ball across face of goal deflect off the outstretched boot of the back-tracking Willett and pop up and fall perfectly for the inrushing Kris Kerr to volley home from 4 yards on 92 minutes.

Glenafton made three changes to the eleven that started against Pollok last Saturday with Ryan McCubbin and Chris Erskine making way for Ryan Walker and Jamie Taggart while keeper David Markey was attending the birth of his second child and Ally Semple gratefully stood in at short notice.

In the visitors dug-out was former Glenafton player and treble-winning manager Craig McEwan, now assistant manager at Cumnock Juniors.

Prior to kick off a minute’s silence was held in memory of Calum Carmichael and the everyone at Glenafton passed on our condolences to Calum’s family and friends at this sad time.

After a goal-less first half Glenafton scored what proved to be winner with a glorious header from substitute Jordan Allan.

A goal-less first half thanks a combination of good saves from both keepers and two or three decent chances slipping just wide of the uprights.

Glenafton broke the deadlock on 61 minutes on the back of a deadly counter-attack.  Josh Tran floated a free-kick from wide on the left into the Glens box only for Craig Pettigrew to head the ball clear where the alert Michael Mullen gathered the ball giving Jamie Bain and Lee Duncanson the slip before drilling a low ball deep into the Pollok half for Chris Erskine to chase down with Sam McKee running on his left for company. On reaching the outskirts of the right-hand side of the Pollok box Erskine dinked a perfectly weighted pass into the box with the outside of his left boot to match Sam McKee’s run who met it sweetly with the outside of his right boot to guide the ball into the left-hand corner of the net beyond the reach of keeper Ben Fry at full stretch.

On 68 minutes Glenafton doubled their lead in a much more direct fashion coupled however with another exquisite finish. Keeper David Markey launched a ball high up a busy left wing where it fell for Michael Mullen to trap and then take a touch as he cut inside before unleashing a lethal low diagonal shot from 25 yards that took a bounce deep in the box to beat the keeper at his near post; what an eye for goal he has!

Pollok pulled one back on 90 minutes with a determined spell of possession. The Trialist battled well to win the ball wide on the right before laying it off for Jay Nelson to cut inside and pick out substitute Sean O’Donnell who quickly switched the ball to Josh Tran on the left who in turn rolled it back to Lee Duncanson to thunder an unstoppable shot from 25 yards into the top left hand corner of the net.

Glenafton made three changes to the eleven that started against Johnstone Burgh on Saturday with Lyall Holding, Ryan Walker and Chris Erskine making way for Cammy Ross, Ollie Rowe and Jamie Taggart.

Talbot’s starting eleven included former Glens midfielder Michael Wardrope.

Prior to kick off the match officials along with both Auchinleck and Glenafton teams lined up at the centre circle to pay their respects to the memory of lifelong Talbot fan and supporter Kevin Higgins, who sadly passed away recently.

Auchinleck took an early lead on 10 minutes through Kyle McAvoy’s header from six yards out. On 24 minutes Michael Wardrope doubled the home side’s lead with an angled shot from inside the box.

Connor Boyd made it 3-0 with a header on 58 minutes and turned provider on 64 minutes after keeper David Markey pushed the ball onto the bar only for Kyle McAvoy to bag his brace by firing home the rebound.

Connor Boyd bagged his brace on 76 minutes after slamminb home a rebound and then completed his hat-trick on 89 minutes.
