Glenafton made two changes to the starting eleven that faced Troon on Tuesday evening with Luke McBeth (suspended) and Dylan O’Kane making way for Zak Ross. making his first start for the club, and Alex McWaters.

Zak Ross

In the Clydebank starting eleven was former Glenafton player Lee Gallacher, captain for the day, while in the dug-out was manager Gordon Moffat, another former Glens player.

The Glens kicked off and the game quickly fell into the pattern of play going back and forth at a pace without seriously testing the keepers. It was the visitors that were first threaten through Michael Moffat breaking into the ‘D’ and from within a pocket of 3 defenders he slipped a forward diagonal pass into the left-hand side of the box for the incoming Alex McWaters only for keeper Kieran Hughes to rush from his line and block the shot at the corner of the six-yard box at the expense of a corner-kick.

Scott McLean curled the kick into the six-yard box where Matt Niven’s attempt to clear the danger failed to clear the box and Gary Fraser got the jump on his marker Joe Slattery on the 18-yard line to nick the ball and a couple of steps later he slammed it home from 12 yards. Glens 1-0 up after 6 minutes.

Played continued to flow from end to end before the Bankies gained the upper hand for a spell. Lee Gallacher set up Slattery for a shot from the edge of the box that was blocked by Paul Paton and deflected out for a corner. Gallacher delivered the kick to the back post where Niven from the six-yard line leapt to send a high looping header to other post where Slattery looked certain to head home from a few yards only for either Moffat or Ryan Sinnamon or both on the goal line to head it out for another corner.

Gallacher curled this corner into the heart of the goalmouth where Paton won the aerial battle with Tom Collins sending the ball rolling to the edge of the box to be snapped up by Frazer Johnstone sliding tackle who then jinked his was past 3 defenders before the ball fell for Collins to lash the ball into the roof of the net from 12 yards. Bankies back level on 13 minutes.

Normal service resumed as both sides sought to add to their tally. Gallacher tried a cheeky lob from the ‘D’ that keeper David Markey clutched. At the other end Sam McKee broke through the middle before drilling a low shot from 30 yards that keeper Hughes fumbled before mopping up the loose ball.

Midway through the half a Clydebank corner was whipped high to the back post where team-mates Niven and Ciaran Mulchay leapt in unison but under pressure from Craig Pettigrew the ball flew inches wide of target.

Back came the visitors through McKee and McMullin combining down the left before the latter fired the ball to the back post for the inrushing McWaters only for his header to drift wide, under pressure from Oisin McHugh.

Soon after McWaters gathered the ball in the centre circle and in a flash played a slick one-two with Moffat before showing McHugh a clean pair of heels to break into the box and draw the keeper from his line only for Hughes to tip his angled shot round the post. The corner kick was headed clear and the ball quickly recovered by the Glens who continued to press. McKee burst through the middle and then fed McMullin on the left to launch another trademark ball into the box for Moffat only for Niven to intercept and cleart for a shy from which Sinnamon and McMullin combined to win a corner, which was also cleared.

Back came Glens and McWaters and Moffat were hogging possession on the outskirts of the box with slick passing and movement. Finally, they managed to breach the box and the ball fell for Fraser only for his shot to be blocked and headed back out the box by Niven which was retrieved by McLean but his shot flew high over the bar.

On the half hour mark Bankies began to enjoy a good spell of pressure with Collins and Slattery in particular looking lively albeit without testing the keeper including a free kick from the edge of the box that was drilled into the Glens wall.

At the other end McKee made another powerful run driving to the left-hand corner of the box before feeding McMullin on the left wing to fire the ball to the back post for Moffat, only for McHugh to intervene and head clear.  Soon after Sinnamon’s free kick from 30 yards cleared the wall before sailing high over the bar.

On the closing minute of the half Pettigrew robbed Slattery of the ball just inside the Glens half and it fell for Moffat to knock it on for McKee to gather and break deep into the box with McHugh on his heels, then clipped a low angled shot that slipped just wide of the hands of the diving keeper and unfortunately beyond the far post.

Bankies launched the ball upfield where Paton met it on the drop sending it high into the air before descending into the centre circle where it was Fraser that met it on the drop and lobbed it forward with McKee tracking its course from an attacking perspective and Niven from a defensive perspective. As the ball bounced McKee raised a high boot in an attempt to control it while simultaneously Niven dipped his head in an attempt to clear it – the pair collided and ball flew up into the air as Niven collapsed to the ground in some discomfort. The referee promptly flashed the red card to McKee and both sides debated the decision while Niven received treatment

Glens mustered one more attack before the break after Moffat released the ball down the left for McWaters to chase with the recovered Niven now in hot pursuit to the corner flag from where McWalters cross into the box was cleared and an entertaining and eventful half drew to a close.

Clydebank kicked-off and were immediately on the front foot through Slattery weaving his way into the left-hand side of the box before chipping the ball high into the six-yard box but just beyond the head of the leaping Collins allowing the ball to continue and drift inches wide of the back post.  Soon after Mulcahy progressed to the right had corner of the six-yard box and although Zac Ross did well to block his shot the ball fell for Slattery only for his shot to be deflected wide by McLean for a corner that Gallacher floated to the near post which was headed clear by Pettigrew.

On 49 minutes Bankies recovered the ball and patiently switched the ball from the left to the right where Hodge and Gallacher combined to win another corner kick that was executed straight from their play-book with excellent timing and precision. Gallacher played it short to Lowe on the corner of the six-yard box who then rolled a diagonal ball back to Gallacher now at the edge of the box, 12 yards from the bye-line, and from here he squared the ball at pace to the unmarked Joe Slattery to meet it first time and sweep a low hard shot the whizzed through a busy 6 yard box and into the net.

The home side continued to press making full advantage of the extra man stroking the ball about with ease.

On 55 minutes Glenafton made a change with Alex McWaters making way for Alan Frizzell and before the dust had settled the Bankies doubled their advantage. Another patient build concluded with Johnstone switching the ball to James Grant on the outskirts of the box on the left-hand side from where he quickly slotted a diagonal pass to Collins as he broke into the box but with no prospect of a shot he touched a cleverly weighted ball wide for Ciaran Mulcahy to gather and turn before drilling a low angled shot under Markey from 10 yards out. Bankies 3-1 up on 56 minutes.

Glens mustered a break down the left from where McMullin whipped a great ball to the near post for the inrushing Frizzell only for McHugh to intercept at the expense of a corner which was headed clear by Johnstone. Back came the visitors and Paton won the ball on the half-way line and clipped it high into Bankies box but this too was cleared and Clydebank countered in deadly fashion.

Slattery pounced on the loose ball and slipped it to Gallacher on the half-way-line who played a one-two with Lowe before taking a touch or two and firing the ball upfield for Tom Collins to chase down into the left-hand side of the box and after controlling it with his head he volleyed an unstoppable shot from 8 yards out. Three goals in a 9 minute spell put the Bankies 4-1 up against the 10 men on 59 minutes!

On 63 minutes Glens brought on defender Ollie Rowe for striker Michael Moffat while soon after Bankies replaced Adam Hodge with Larry McMahon.

The visitors had a short spell of possession in the Bankies half without ever breaking into the box or testing the keeper.

With 15 minutes to go the Bankies made their final changes with Lee Gallacher and Nick Lowe making way for Alan Kelly and Liam McGonigle.

Glens made good progress down the left for McLean to float the ball into six yard box for Frizzell and Rowe and although the latter outjumped the two defenders keeper Kieran Hughes leapt to clutch the ball cleanly.

The Bankies finished with a flurry of shots –  Johnstone blasted well over the bar from 18 yards, Kelly’s curling effort from 20 yards was well held by Markey and then the keeper got down low at the post to hold Little’s angled strike.

Prior to kick-off a minutes silence was held in memory of former Glenafton player and manager Tommy McGinn and also in memory of other players and supporters that had sadly passed away over the summer. Glenafton would also like to thank Tommy’s family for the generous donation made to the club through President John Stewart this evening.

Glenafton made two changes to the starting eleven that faced Darvel on Saturday with Lyall Holding and Alex McWaters making way for Michael McMullin and Dylan O’Kane. On the bench was summer signing Zac Ross joined by Alan Frizzell who signed for Glens yesterday, having come on against Darvel as a trialist.

After some early pressure from Troon the Glens gave away possession on the outskirts of the box allowing Dean Fulton to gather the ball and square it for the on rushing Kyle Gilroy only for the winger to be tripped by Luke McBeth before he could break into the box. The Glens defender was shown a red card for preventing a goal scoring opportunity and summer signing Mark Shankland stepped up to take his goal scoring opportunity with his usual aplomb and curling the free kick round the wall and into the net.

The 10 men Glens side immediately made a change with forward Sam McKee sacrificed for defender Zak Ross, making his debut for the club. The home support voiced their anger when no action was taken after Fulton appeared to strike Ryan Sinnamon on the face.

Glens best effort of the half saw Michael Moffat break forward before blasting a shot from 18 yards forcing Dale Burgess to pull off a great save, leaping high to push the ball wide of target.

On 32 minutes Troon doubled their lead from another set-piece.Sam McLoskey floated a corner kick from the right toward the back post where Nicky Docherty won the aerial battle to bullet a header home.

HT Glens 0 Troon 2

The visitors came close to adding to their tally after MCloskey broke into the left hand side of the box and drive to the goal line before whipping a great ball across the goalmouth for the incoming Shankland only for his seemingly net-bound header to be pushed away by keeper David Markey.

At the other end Dylan O’Kane chased a long ball down the right from Mick McMullin and with hsi route into the box blocked he rolled the ball back to Scott McLeand to drill a daisy cutter from 22 yards that Burgess stopped at full stretch and then pounced on the loose ball.

On 63 minutes Glens then brought on Alan Frizzell for Craig Pettigrew.

The home side enjoyed a good spell of possession as they looked to halve the deficit and their efforts paid off on 71 minutes. Gary Fraser gathered the ball in the centre circle before pushing forward to slip a pass to Michael Moffat on the outskirts of the box and with his back to goal the striker quickly turned and side-stepped a defender before curling a shot past Burgess rooted to the spot.

Glens brought on fresh legs with Alex McWaters replacing Ryan Sinnamon.

The home side continued to press with waves of attacks, however the finishing touch eluded them and in time added on they were hist with a sucker punch . Burgess launched a goal kick long and high up the park taking a bounce before it fell well for Gilroy in the box to square the ball for the incoming sub Sam Jamieson to take a touch and slot it home.

Sat 29th Jul 2023KO 2:00pmRecreation Park, Darvel

Glenafton travelled to face Darvel in the opening Premier Division game of the 2023/24. Doubtless the Glens all red strip would bring back memories for the home support of that fantastic evening when their team knocked Premier Division side Aberdeen out of the Scottish Cup.

Glenafton starting eleven included 4 summer signings making their competitive debuts for the club – Luke McBeth, Lyall Holding, Gary Fraser and Ryan Sinnamon as well as Michael Moffat who joined the Glens after a loan spell from Ayr United last season.

In the Darvel line up was former Glenafton winger Leon Murphy who made the move to Recreation Park during the close-season and Ross Barbour, the younger brother of former Glens player Graem Barbour; while in the dug-out was former Glens’ striker David Winters, now assistant manager to Tony McInally.

A minute’s silence was held before kick-off in memory of former Darvel player John Frew who captained the club to the league title in 1967, and recently passed away.

Glenafton kicked off and within 3 minutes it was Leon Murphy that opened his Darvel account after collecting a pass from Scott Ferguson before cutting inside a Glens defender and firing a shot from the edge of the ‘D’ that whizzed past keeper David Markey and into the net.

A minute later Jamie Glasgow spurned a great chance to double Darvel’s lead after blasting a shot from 10 yards over the bar.

Glens began to grow into the game with both Paul Paton and Gary Fraser building attacks from the back including one which saw Sam McKee pick the ball just inside the Darvel half, hold off the challenge of Glasgow, drive forward and then survive the attempted sandwich of Dean Cairns & Mark Sideserf to progress down the right and square the ball across the goalmouth for the incoming Michael Moffat only for Stephen Bronsky to intervene and clear the danger.

Paul Paton – breaking at the best

On 15 minutes the visitors drew level with an exquisite finish. Lyall Holding gathered the ball near the half-way line and with no options forward he rolled the ball back to Paul Paton who launched a long high ball into the Darvel box for Moffat to chase down showing defender David Syme a clean pair of heels. As the ball descended the Glens striker never took his eye off the ball, aware that keeper Andy Leishman had chosen to stay on his line and that Danny O’Halloran was now closing in, and from the corner of the six-yard box he delicately chipped the ball over the goalie’s head for it drop and hit off the base of the far post and into the net.

Glens enjoyed a good spell of possession. Fraser picked up the ball in the centre circle to drive forward shaking off Glasgow and then as Cairns faced him head on, he simply turned his back on the bewildered midfielder before quickly turning and continuing his run forward only for his shot from distance sailing high over the bar.

Midway through the half the home side began to press. Ian McShane and Murphy were prevented from breaking into the box by a red line of defenders and Luke McBeth stripped them of the ball. Soon after Scott Ferguson won a free kick at the edge of the box only for McShane’s effort to be bravely headed away by McBeth on the end of the wall. Murphy and Ross Barbour combined down the right to win a corner kick which was cleared by the Glens defence at the expense of a disputed corner which McShane played short to Glasgow before curling the return pass high and wide of the goal.

Played then raged back and forth for a period with rain showers coming and going too.

Captain Craig Pettigrew making his 100th start for Glenafton Athletic. Congratulations Craig.

Back came Glens and Craig Pettigrew launched a long ball upfield for Alex McWaters to chase into the box only for Syme to block his run and allow the ball to run into the hands of Leishman. At the other end a Darvel shot from 20 yards flew undeterred through a packed penalty box before whizzing inches wide of the post.

Glens countered through Holding winning a corner after a good run down the right, O’Halloran won the ball in the air and Cairns booted it clear. Murphy made another mazy run down the right before picking out Ferguson to whip a low shot from the outskirts of a box that took a deflection forcing Markey into pulling off a great save and push the ball wide of the post.

A good view of David Markey’s save

On 35 minutes a Darvel corner was won in the air by Syme and the ball fell for Cairns to fire a close range shot which was blocked and cleared by McLean, only for McShane to quickly whip it back into the box where Graham Wilson clipped it into the net but from an offside position.

Some respite for Glens as McKee broke down the right and into the right-hand side of the box only for his cut-back for the incoming Moffat to be clutched cleanly by Leishman.

Ferguson’s header at the other end slipped wide of the post while soon after he gathered a short corner from McShane but his shot from the corner of the penalty box dipped over the bar.

Back came Glens and Scott McLean’s powerful run down the left saw him skip past Barbour before progressing to the bye-line only for his cross to be cut-out by O’Halloran for a corner. McLean took the kick which  was headed on at the near post by Moffat before McBeth’s header cannoned off Syme and the ball fell for Pettigrew on the outskirts of the box to chip it back into goalmouth for McBeth to flash a header wide of the post, albeit from an offside position.

HT Darvel 1 Glens 1

The home side kicked off the second hald and were soon on the front foot. O’Halloran headed a corner wide of target; Barbour drilled a low shot that lacked the power to trouble Markey who got down low to hold; the same could be said of Murphy’s shot that the keeper clasped cleanly and Sideserf’s diving header flew wide of the far post.

On 54 minutes Glens made a double change with Lyall Holding and Alex McWaters making way for Michael McMullin and Dylan O’Kane. The young striker was soon in the thick of the action snapping up the ball in the centre circle and totally committed to driving forward before thumping a shot from distance that sailed over the bar. Back came Darvel and Markey was called into action again, diving to intercept Glasgow’s low ball for the incoming Ferguson.

On 56 minutes the game became shrouded in controversy.

McShane picked up the ball in the middle of the park and forced his way forward to break into the right-hand side of the box to clip a ball to the near post where Murphy somehow got down low to guide a header that appeared to crash off the underside of the bar and the quick reactions of Markey saw him block the loose ball with his knee. The keeper then pushed the ball against the inside of the post before falling to his knees and grabbing the ball with both hands, holding it tightly on the ground. Arms were vehemently raised from both sides the Blue demanding the ball had crossed the line the Reds strongly of the opposite opinion. The referee glanced over at the assistant referee on the line and pointed to the centre circle with the lino now running to the half-way line.

Goal to Darvel! But wait, the Glens were incensed with the decision and the referee then consulted his assistant and it appears there was an uncertainty over whether the ball had crossed the line or not – enough it would seem to deny a goal, the game remained tied at one-the-piece.

The home side continued to press and a corner-kick was headed on at the near post by Wilson to set up Ferguson but his side footed shot ended up, (in the words of Sutherland Brothers & Quiver),  lying in the arms of Mar(ke)y!

Glens got their breath back and won a corner kick which saw the four-pack of O’Halloran & Syme and Pettigrew & McBeth simultaneously leap for the ball – who won the ball was less clear but it fell for Sideserf to head clear out the box.

The visitors continued to press and on 62 minutes the Moff struck again to put them in front.

A long ball upfield was intercepted by an O’Halloran header sending it high into the air and the ball then chased down by Moffat who managed to give O’Halloran the slip before progressing and cracking a low shot from the 18-yard line that flew past the outstretched leg of Syme and the reach of the diving Leishman before nestling in the net. As the Glens gathered near the corner flag to celebrate the crestfallen Darvel players made their way to the centre circle.

Nevertheless, the home side licked their wounds and Barbour broke through the middle but with his route to the box blocked he rolled the ball back to McShane to curl a powerful shot from 25 yards pulling off another fine save from Markey who held on tightly to the ball as Wilson hoped to snap up any spillage.

Back came Glens and O’Kane stripped O’Halloran of the ball on the outskirts of the box before driving to the bye-line and cutting inside towards the edge of the six-yard box only for Leishman to block his shot at the expense of a corner-kick, which was cleared by Barbour.

McMullin then switched play from deep on the left to upfield on the right with a great ball for O’Kane to trap and drive into the box, skipping past Sideserf and then leaving O’Halloran grounded but once again Leishman rushed from his line to block the young striker’s shot on the six-yard line.

Darvel then enjoyed a good spell of pressure albeit with lots of passing on the outskirts of the box but couldn’t breach the penalty area until a Sideserf cross from wide on the left bounced of the top off the bar and fell for Glasgow to bullet a diving header that was blocked by Markey before he pounced on the loose ball.

Jamie Glasgow and David Market take a breather

On 71 minutes Darvel brought on Craig Moore for Graham Wilson.

The home side tried to breach the Glens box again but Ryan Sinnamon stopped Cairns in his tracks and McShane’s free-kick from 20 yards saw Markey get down low to push the ball away and Murphy looked certain to prod it home at the near post but instead the ball drifted wide of the far post, but Moore was adjudged to be offside in any case.

With 15 minutes to go Glens Sam McKee made way for Ollie Rowe.

Darvel pressed again and Murphy picked up the ball at the right-hand corner of the penalty box but again with no way through he was forced to run along the front of the box before playing the ball back to McShanewho was restricted a shot from 25 yards that whizzed high and wide of the far post.

Back came Glens and Fraser’s long ball upfield caught the Darvel defence napping leaving Moffat with a free run to goal and O’Kane following for company and as they approached the box Moffat let O’Kane take up the running forcing Leishman to rush from his line and on this occasion the striker slotted the ball through the keeper’s legs and into the net. To his dismay the assistant referee flagged for offside although he appeared well behind Moffat when collecting the ball!

Dylan no pleased with offside decision

At the other Cairn’s glancing header was comfortably collected by Markey.

With 5 minutes of normal time to go Glens brought on trialist Alan Frizzel and for Michael Moffat.

Darvel continued to press without testing Markey as they struggled to break down a well-drilled Glens defence.

Indeed, Glens came close to extending their lead after O’Kane chased a ball down the left before cutting into the box and drilling a low shot from a tight angle past three defenders and beating the diving Leishman at the near post, only for the ball to hit the post and roll along the length of the gaping goal before slipping wide of the far post.

Dlan looks on as the agonisingly drifts wide of the back post

McBeth broke down a Darvel attack with a powerful header and although Frizzel was quick off the mark to leave the struggling O’Halloran in his wake Leishman run out of his box to boot the ball clear.

Into what would prove to be 6 minutes of added time Darvel’s man-of-the-match Leon Murphy conjured up the best ofthe chances as the home side pressed for a late equaliser only for his curling shot from 20 yards to be pushed round the post by Markey at full stretch.

The six minutes flew by for Darvel while they dragged on for Glenafton but when the whistle went  the travelling support went back up the brae and headed doon the road delighted with their team’s efforts.

Glens travelled to the James McGrory Park, Glasgow to face St. Roch’s in their opening pre-season friendly.

The starting XI was David Markey (captain), Scott McLean, Alex McWaters and Dylan O’Kane along with 4 new summer signings – Luke McBeth, Gary Fraser, Ryan Sinnamon and Michael Moffat and 2 trialists.

Both sides created early chances with St. Roch’s first to show through a well-engineered volley from deep in the box forcing keeper David Markey to block with both hands.

Glens countered with a lightning-quick break down the left by Alex McWaters before cutting inside only for to curl a shot from the corner of the six-yard box only for the keeper to pull of a fine diving save. The visitors pressed again as Dylan O’Kane slipped a forward pass for Michael Moffat to gather and drive into the six yard only to be denied by a sliding tackle and The Candy cleared the corner-kick that followed.

Michael Moffat & Dylan O’Kane

Play continued to flow back and forth with defences on top and clear-cut chances were few and far between and often restricted to shots from distance, the best of which saw Candy’s No. 7 blast the ball from 25 yards that whizzed inches over the bar.

On 26 minutes St. Roch’s won a corner kick which saw Luke McBeth win another ball in the air and Gary Fraser clear the ball.

Luke McBeth heads clear

At the other end Fraser picked out Mick McMullin in space on the left who killed the ball before setting up a curling shot from 25 yards that sailed over the bar. Soon after McMullin chased back into his own box to cut out a dangerous ball at the expense of a corner which was headed wide by Jordan Thomson under pressure from Ryan Sinnamon.

Glens enjoyed a good spell with Moffat, O’Kane and McMullin combining in the box but the latter’s shot was blocked and the resultant corner came to nothing

Thomson then won a corner after a tussle with Markey which ended with his shot being deflected wide by the keeper and although this was cleared the home side continued to press but found no way through the Glens defence.

Glens made a number of changes Michael Moffat, Dylan O’Kane, Alex McWaters making way for Sam McKee, Paul Paton, trialist as well as Harvey Gilmour, the younger brother of Scotland star Billy Gilmour who was invited to join the team for the day. Billy was looking on from the side-lines when he wasn’t posing for selfies or signing shirts for excited young St. Roch’s supporters.

Scotland star Billy Gilmour takes time out to pose for selfies

Young Harvey was soon in the thick of the action showing some great touches as Glens enjoyed some early pressure in the second half.

Harvey Gilmour lifts off

However, The Candy got into their swing and a free kick from just outside the corner of the box was whipped inches wide of the post

Back came Glens through a powerful run into box by Trialist before cutting the ball back to McMullin to drill a low powerful shot that whizzed wide of the back post.

On the hour mark The Candy broker the deadlock. After mopping up a Glens attack on the outskirts of their box Kieran Dawa launched a great ball upfield where Ben Dailly knocked it on for Eddie Ferns to push forward only for his path to be blocked by Trialist, however as he tumbled to the ground the ball rolled on into the box and the alert Dailly quickly pounced and clipped it over the outrushing Markie and into net.

Soon after St. Roch’s No.10 did well to on the outskirts of the box to set up a shot from the edge of the ‘D’ that dipped over the bar.

Glens then enjoyed a decent spell of possession but couldn’t create any openings at the other end. Indeed, one attack broke down near the corner flag and after a flowing break upfield Ferns rolled the ball deep into the box for Daily to tee up a shot, only for Paul Paton’s timely sliding tackle deflect the ball wide off the striker’s shins.

On 75 minutes Glens came close to drawing level after their best passing spell of the match. McLean gathered a throw-in from the right just inside St. Roch’s half and squared it to McKee who rolled it back to Sinnamon to slip the ball up the wing for McLean who in turn knocked it forward to McKee on the overlap tight on the touchline and although his attempted cross into the box was blocked, he instantly recovered the ball. Holding off the defender McKee zipped the ball back to Sinnamon to arrow a forward pass into the box (taking three defenders out of play) for the inrushing McLean who cut the ball back across the face of goal for the incoming McMullin only or the keeper and centre-back to clear the danger.

A brief water break was welcomed in the humid conditions and further substitutions including the return of some players that had been substituted!

Glens continued to push for the equaliser with McKee and McLean combining down the right again before the latter floated the ball into the box for McMullin but the cross was intercepted at the expense of a corner kick, which the keeper smothered in the six-yard box. Soon after play was switched from McKee on the right to McMullin on the right to blast a shot from 30 yards which dipped over the bar.

St. Roch’s countered with a great ball from the left to the far corner of the penalty box for No. 16 to chase and crack a low angled shot that Markey blocked before grabbing the loose ball.

Just before the final whistle McMullin tried another long effort from wide on the left that was cleanly clutched by the keeper.

Mary Dornan (1936-2023) R.I.P.

Everyone at Glenafton Athletic was saddened to learn that Mary Dornan had passed away peacefully this morning. Mary has followed the Glens since the 1950s when her brother Danny McCulloch signed for his home town team and through time established himself as a Glenafton legend. She was not only Danny’s sister but also his biggest fan and it was thanks to Mary that Glenafton had access to her collection of photographs, newspaper clippings and a hoard of medals of her beloved brother.

Mary also made the papers in 1961, when following the Glens to face Dunbar United in the 5th of the Scottish Junior Cup.

Margaret Struthers, Mrs Margaret Park, Joe Sanderson and Mrs Mary Dornan

Sadly the great Glens side of the early 1960s just fell short of winnng the Holy Grail of Junior football, finishing runners-up to Irvine Meadow in 1962/63. However, Mary (& Danny) were at Firhill in 1992/93, 30 years later, to see her Sweet Afton defeat Tayport and lift the trophy for the first time.

Mary was also at Loch Park to cheer the Glens on to victory over Camelon in the Scottish Junior Cup semi-final in Season 2013/14(left) .

Although they lost out to Hurlford United in the final, like the rest of support she was proud of their achievement, the team having been rebuilt at the start of the season (right).

Glenafton next reached the Scottish Junior Cup final in 2016/17 and defeated Auchinleck Talbot at Rugby Park on their way to a treble winning season. The following week the newly refurbished Campbell Hall at Loch Park was opened and to mark the occasion the club initiated their ‘Hall of Fame’. Mary was delighted and very proud to learn that Danny ‘Puskas’ McCulloch and his goal-scoring team-mate Richard ‘Nodder’ Kirkpatrick were the first two inductees.

Danny McCulloch & Richard Kirkpatrick (2017)

Although Mary had been unable to make the trip to the final at Rugby Park, both her and husband Patrick, were excited that the trophy paid them a visit to their welcoming home in Afton Bridgend. This was a very special year for a very special couple, who soon after celebrated 60 years of marriage.

A few years later both Mary and her brother Danny were residents in Bute House Care Home Cumnock and it was here, sadly that Danny passed away in May 2020. Mary’s devoted husband Patrick visited her every day, when he could, including through those difficult COVID times and restrictions.

Patrick aged 86, passed away only seven weeks ago and now he and his beloved Mary will rest in peace. together. Our thoughts are with Mary’s family and friends at this sad time.

Achieving our club license has been a long process, and I would like to once again thank everyone who has assisted with our application. There is probably too many people to mention, but I would like to once again thank Keith Stewart from East Ayrshire Council for the help he has given myself with the application, it is greatly appreciated.

The Glens travelled to face Arthurlie in the last game of the league campaign with both sides safe from relegation. Glenafton made 3 changes from the eleven that started against Clydebank last Saturday Aiden Glavin (injured), Ryan Nisbet and Hugh Kerr were replaced by Craig Burns, Craig Pettigrew and Leon Murphy respectively.

Although Glens kicked off with Dunterlie Park bathed in the Barrhead sunshine it was Arthurlie that shone brightly with two goals in the opening 5 minutes.

The first came on 3 minutes after a perfectly executed text book move down the right flank. Dale Simeon gathered a ball from Andy McLaughlin to push forward and as defender Ollie Rowe approached slipped it wide to Gary Carroll on the overlap before sprinting off towards the back post the goal to meet Carroll’s cross from bye-line, leaping unmarked to head the ball home via the inside of the post.

Two minutes later, Simeon turned provider by floating a corner kick high to the far side of the box where Lee Roulston sent a high looping header back into the goalmouth over the heads of players from both sides congregated at the post and although it appeared Michael Moffat had headed it off the line, the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line. The decision stood despite the Glens appeal.

Glens rallied and had a couple of attacks that fizzled out before they halved the deficit on 8 minutes. Moffat gathered the ball on the left and slipped the ball between two defenders into the path of the Scott McLean breaking into the right hand side of the box to drill a low shot from 15 yards past a defender and beyond the reach of keeper James Scott.

Played raged back and forth before the visitors levelled the score on 16 minutes with McLean turning provider. The attacking midfielder gathered the ball in his own half before driving forward to the outskirts of the box where he was forced to break into the right-hand side of the box to square a well-weighted pass to Alex McWaters to smack a sweet strike from 12 yards into the corner of the net, for his first Glens goal.

A minute later ‘Lie passed up a good chance to retain the lead after Conor Bradley dragged his shot from 18 yards inches wide of the post. While soon after at the other end Scott pulled off a good save from Moffat’s 25 yard shot and the keeper eventually got hold off the ball at his near post from the corner kick that followed.

On 24 minutes Jordan Leyden pressed through the middle before cracking a low shot that just bounced dangerously in front Burns and the former Barrhead Boys Club keeper did well to get down low and push the ball away with both hands and then rise to his feet and force Simeon to send his attempt to bury the rebound round the post.

The referee stopped played for a drinks-break in the scorching sunshine but after play resumed clear-cut chances from either side had dried up despite the endeavour on show the best of which fell to Arthurlie after Leyden floated a free kick into the box only for Gary Carroll’s header to fall into the welcoming arms of Burns.

Arthurlie made one change at the break keeper Gary Black replacing James Scott between the sticks. The keeper was quickly called into action after Michael McMullin lasered a shot from the left corner of the box that was always on the rise as the keeper tipped it over the bar.

Ten minutes into the new half the Glens made a double substitution with Leon Murphy and Michael Moffat making way from Sam McKee and Hugh Kerr.

The home side were enjoying the bulk of possession and a corner kick on the hour mark although won in the air by Glens captain Craig Pettigrew created quite a goal mouth scramble with the loose ball eventually cleared by Adam Caldwell. Soon after Caldwell and Kerr combined in the six yard box to clear another corner.

Arthurlie made a triple substitution with Connor Bradley & Lewis Strain making way for Ayr United loanee Kinlay Bilham & Jordan Shelvey and soon after Lewis Warnock replaced Andrew McLaughlin.

Midway through the half Roulston chased down a long clearance upfield and from wide on the right delivered a superb diagonal pass to Simeon on the left flank to break into the box only for Burns to push away his shot from a tight angle.

On 72 minutes Glens responded in a lethal fashion to take the lead for the first time. Dylan O’Kane picked up a pass from Kerr on the outskirts of the box and as a defender closed-in, he dinked to the right before blasting an angled shot from 25 yards beyond the keeper, diving at full stretch at his near post, who could only look on as the ball bounced of the base of the far post and into the net.

Second half substitutes Sam McKee and Hugh Kerr then combined to double the Glens lead on 79 minutes. McKee broke into the right-hand side of the box and then rounded the keeper, as he rushed from his goal, to progress to the bye-line from where he clipped the ball across the face of the goal for the incoming Hugh Kerr to prod the ball past a defender on the line for his 21st goal of the season.

The home side made their final substitution with striker Gary Smith replacing Gary Carroll.

Arthurlie quickly regrouped and won a corner kick on the right and Pettigrew won the aerial battle in the goal mouth sending the ball looping high into air that dropped towards the corner of the six yard box which Leyden met on the drop to volley a low shot through a ruck of players only for the alert Craig Burns  to  get down low and push the ball off the line and then get a strong hand to stifle Warnock’s attempt to stab home the loose ball before Pettigrew then hoofed it clear.

Glens countered through Paton playing a one-two with McKee and picking up the return pass at the corner of the six-yard box from where his low angled shot beat the keeper but slipped wide of the far post.

The visitors made their final substitution on 86 minutes with Craig Pettigrew making way for Dean Currie.

In the closing minute of the match Smith chased down a ball into the box and from the bye-line cracked a stunning volley but Burns, once again came out on top with another spontnaeous and brave block at his near post.

Clydebank 6 Glenafton 2

PDM Buildbase WOSFL Premier LeagueMatch 29
Clydebank 6 (3)Kelly, Little 2, Gallacher 2, Mulcahy
Glenafton Athletic 2 (1)McLean 2

Bankies kicked off and enjoyed a lively start. Alan Kelly stripped Paul Paton of the ball and drilled a low shot from 22 yards that drifted wide of the post. Adam Hodge then intercepted a Glens clearance and lobbed the ball high to the edge of the left hand-side of the box where Kelly gathered and cracked a vicious shot that keeper Aiden Glavin, at full stretch, pushed round the post. The corner kick was floated to the back post where Mick McMullin beat Jaime Darroch in the aerial battle for ball at the expense of another corner which Glavin clutched cleanly under the bar.

Forward came Glens as Alex McWaters broke upfield and although his cross into the box was intercepted the ball was quickly recovered by Dylan O’Kane who curled a shot from 22 yards only for keeper Jamie Donelly to push it wide of the top corne; the corner that followed was cleared.

Play raged back and forth but with 11 minutes gone Bankies were forced to make an early substitution after Creag Little struggled to recover from an earlier knock and was replaced by Danny MacKenzie.

On 13 minutes the home side took the lead after Hodge gathered the ball wide on the right on the half-way line before pushing forward and switching play with a peach of a long diagonal pass to Alan Kelly tight on the left wing. He then cut inside and curled a cross from the corner of the box towards the near post seemingly for the inrushing Ben McLernan but it appears he never got a touch and the ball continued undeterred past the keeper on the line before bulging the side-netting at the far post.

The Bankies continued to press while Glens gallantly cleared their lines before Lee Gallacher picked out Nicky Little in the box only to drag his shot wide of target.

Some respite for the Glens as Scott McLean burst upfield to edge of the box from where he rolled the ball back to McWaters to fire a shot from 22 yards that was well held by Donnelly.

Back came Clydebank and after another spell of pressure doubled their lead on 23 minutes. Joe Slattery from within a pocket of defenders lobbed a high ball over their heads into the left-hand side of the box for MacKenzie to collect and drive along the 18-yard line before squaring to Kelly to skelp a low shot from just inside the ‘D’ and although Glavin got down to block it the loose ball rolled along the face of goal and the alert Nicky Little was quick to react and lash the ball into the net. The young keeper sustained an injury in trying to savek the rebound and had to be replaced with Craig Burns.

The Glens fought their way back into the game. After a determined run down the right by Ryan Nisbet he whipped the ball into the six-yard for Michael Moffat only for Jamie Darroch to intercept and head out for a corner. It was Darroch that headed the corner-kick clear out the box only for O’Kane to recover the ball and hold of Kelly to break down the left and clip a great ball high into the six-yard box for the inrushing Hugh Kerr and McMullin. However, the former was being held back by Hodge and it was the latter that leapt high to challenge for the ball with the outrushing keeper, both colliding and collapsing to the ground. The referee pointed to the spot only for the assistant referee to raise his flag, apparently suggesting the keeper had been fouled. However after a lengthy discussion the referee’s decision stood. and Scott McLean kept his cool to slot home the spot-kick an halve the deficit on 32 minutes.

(*Although, McMullin had clearly taken an accidental blow to the side of the head, my initial thoughts were that the referee must have spotted Hodge holding back Kerr with both hands – but he wasn’t booked, so the ref hadn’t spotted it.)

Soon after, O’Kane won the ball on the outskirts of the centre-circle in the Bankies half and escaped the clutches of Nicky Low and then those of Darroch to push forward with Hodge now hot on his heels with arms outstretched but again the young striker shook him off until a few yards from the box where the Bankies full back made his choice to bring him down. McLean clipped the free-kick over the wall and as the ball began to dip Donnelly leapt with an outstretched arm to tip over the bar.

McLean played the corner kick low into a packed six-yard box initiating a scramble and although Kerr was being held again, he managed to roll the ball back to McLean to clip it back into the goalmouth where Donnelly punched it clear of the box only for McWaters to hook it back by which time the keeper was in place to comfortably catch the ball.

Glens continued to enjoy a good spell of possession before the home side began to turn the screw again. With numbers in the Glens box MacKenzie won the ball and fed Little to side-foot a shot from 18 yards only for Burns to save and hold tightly.

On 42 minutes Clydebank restored their two-goal cushion. Slattery, with his route to the box blocked, rolled the ball back to Hodge tight on the right wing who took a touch or two before lobbing a perfectly weighted ball over a couple of Glens defenders and down the wing into a space for Lee Gallacher to chase it down before cutting into the box and effortlessly jink past two defenders and as a third closed in he angled a low shot from 8 yards out just beyond the fingertips of Burns at full stretch.

HT Clydebank 3 Glens 1

Glenafton made a change at the break with Ryan Nisbet making way for Sam McKee.

Glens kicked off the second half and McLean tried his luck from 30 yards with a low drive but the keeper was not to be caught cold and held it well.  The visitors then won a corner which was cleared and Clydebank’s counter-attack concluded with Little’s shot from inside the box stopped by Burns. Soon after the keeper made another fine save this time from Kelly’s effort from the edge of the box.

Back came Little to cut into the right-hand side of the Glens box to fire another low shot from a tight angle which Burns got down low to push away and Adam Caldwell mopped up the loose ball. It was then played upfield to O’Kane but although his attempt to head the ball on to Kerr was intercepted by Darroch the centre-half’s header fell back into the path of the lively O’Kane. From here he dashed forward leaving Low in his wake and then skipped past Hodge with ease and on reaching the ‘D’ he cracked a shot through space between Darroch and Oisin McHugh only for Donnelly, on his six yard line,  to push the ball away sending it high into the air and as it dropped the incoming Scott McLean drilled it into ground to send it bouncing over the diving keeper and it into the net. Glens back in the game, a goal behind, on 53 minutes.

Two minutes later Paton nicked the ball from Kelly and slipped it to McKee on the right who whipped a high ball into the far side of the box where Moffat had sneaked behind Hodge and Darroch only for his header from the corner of the six-yard box to be clutched by the keeper at his near post.

On 56 minutes McKee’s shot was deflected out for a corner which McLean floated into the goalmouth where Ollie Rowe’s header slipped past post while Hodge and Kerr had wrestled and fell to the ground; the Glens striker’s claim for a penalty fell also – on deaf ears!

At the other end McLernan broke into the left-hand side of the box forcing Burns to rush from his line and then coolly rounded the keeper with a great touch only for McMullin’s sliding tackle preventing him bagging a brace. Back came Glens and Kerr’s header from a Moffat cross was gathered by Donnelly.

On the hour mark Clydebank restored their two goal cushion after a powerful run from Kelly cutting inside from the left, by-passing a host of Glens player before clipping a superb ball to match Lee Gallacher’s run in from the right, to take a touch and on entering the box curled the ball between Rowe and the diving keeper into the far side of the net. 4-2 Bankies!

Bankies then brought on Larry McMahon for Joe Slattery.

Play went back and forth and Glens had a couple of half chances from scuccessive corner-kicks that saw the Donnelly clutch Rowe’s header and then watch Kerr’s header dip over the bar.

However, on 73 minutes Bankies added a fifth as Glens got into a fankle! Donnelly launched a goal kick high upfield and as McMullin prepared to head it clear it caught him square on his crown sending the ball high into the air and Glens’ defender crumbling to ground in some distress. In the meantime, McLernan leapt high to head the ball into the box where both McWaters and Little gave chase while Burns rushed from his line and it was Nicky Little that got a touch to edge it wide of the keeper before side footing the ball into the empty net.

Clydebank then made a triple substitution with the injured Jamie Darroch and goal scorers Ben McLernan Nicky Little making way for Matt Niven, Connor Higgins and Ciaran Mulcahy.

On 79 minutes McMullin picked up another injury and was replaced by Dean Currie.

Credit to Glens they worked hard to try and pull one back but soon found themselves defending a number of corner-kicks as Bankies looked to add to their tally.

With 5 minutes to go Glens brought on Leon Murphy and Cameron McKenzie for Alex McWaters and Hugh Kerr.

Clydebank side brought an impressive display to a conclusion after Gallacher played a short corner to Kelly who quickly returned it for the former Glens player to curl it into the six-yard box where Ciaran Mulcahy leapt to bullet a header home.

Glenafton made 3 changes to the eleven that started against Auchinleck on Monday evening with Dean Currie, Leon Murphy and Michael Moffat replacing Adam Caldwell, Ryan Nisbet and Hugh Kerr.

Glens run of four league wins in a row came to an end going down 3-2 to Cambuslang in what was their third game in five days. Relegated Rangers opened the scoring on 22 minutes after a sustained period of pressure saw them win four corner kicks in a row. The fourth was fired in from the right to the far side of the box where it struck off the chest of the unmarked Robbie Leighton sending the ball well outside out the box which he quickly recovered and cut inside a couple of defenders before unleashing a low shot from inside the ‘D’ through a packed box and into the corner of the net.

There were be no further scoring in the first-half.

HT Cambuslang 1 Glens 0

At the break Glenafton made a double substitution Sam McKee & Alex McWaters making way for Ryan Nisbet & Hugh Kerr and the change paid immediate dividends.

On 53 minutes Dylan O’Kane won the ball inside the Glens half and rolled the ball forward to Michael Moffat who quickly laid it off inside to Leon Murphy and from the edge of the centre circle he lobbed the ball over the Camby defence for Hugh Kerr to chase and gather at the outskirts of the box from where he drove forward to lash the ball into the net from 15 yards.

Hugh Kerr brace taking his goal-tally for the season so far to 20

The home side regained the lead on 72 minutes. Scott Anson deep in his own half launched a high ball up the left which was readily gathered by the Glens before the defenders got into a fankle giving the ball away cheapy to Ben Richmond to drive to the corner of the six-yard box and drill a low ball past keeper Aiden Glavin.

Glens drew level on 84 minutes after Dean Currie floated a high ball into the Camby box and although the defender won the ball in the air it fell for Michael Moffat who took a touch and then tried to guide it into the corner of the net only for it to bounce off keeper Andy Wilson’s shins and there was Hugh Kerr to bounce and slam the ball home from 15 yards in off the post.

A point appeared to have been salvaged by the Glens to at least extend their unbeaten run to five games in a row. But no! Two minutes later Camby were awarded a penalty kick after a short throw into the box concluded with recipient being impeded and Nickey Fraser slotted home what proved to be the winner.
