Glenafton made two changes to the eleven that started against Rutherglen Glencairn midweek with Jamie Low and Callum Wilson (injured) making way for Ricky Little and David Blyth.

The weather conditions prior to kick off had been a mixture of occasional blue sky but chiefly showers of heavy rain and hail, despite which the Glens managed to get the game to go ahead.

Glens kicked off against the wind and an early shot from inside box by Michael Mullen flew over the bar. Largs responded with back-to-back corner-kicks that were cleared by the home defence.

Play raged back and forth with the visitors coming close after William Sewell gathered the ball wide on the right before clipping it to the back post for the incoming Jamie Martin only for keeper Ollie Ecrepont to smother his shot from an acute angle.

Glens continued to press but could not breach the Largs box while the visitors looked the more threatening and on 13 minutes they took the lead. A ball from the left, inside the Glens half, was floated high into the box for Lewis Davidson on the six-yard line only for Ricky Little and Encrepont to leap with him and although the keeper pushed the ball downwards with both hands it bounced up perfectly for William Sewell to crack an unstoppable volley into the net. Glens 0 Largs 1, 13 minutes.

Another marauding run by the lively Brannan McDermott ended with him launching a ball from the left high into the Thistle box where Shuggy Kerr got the jump on Cory Hughes at the far corner of the six-yard box only for keeper George O’Connor to snatch the ball at the base of his post.

At the other end another Largs corner was ultimately cleared after a scramble in a packed box.

A bright spell, in terms of weather, saw Largs double their lead, to add to the Glens gloom. David McGrath launched a high ball from well behind the Largs side of the centre circle for Sewell breaking into the right-hand side of the Glens box where Ricky Little on the 18 yard line to cushioned a header back towards Ecrepont only for Sewell to beat the keeper to the ball at the corner of the six-yard box and then lose control for a second, but as Craig McCracken closed in he recovered the ball and poked it home from the goal-line. Glens 0 Largs 2, 30 minutes.

Back came Largs launching another high ball into the box for Sewell only for Ollie Rowe to win the aerial battle heading the ball to the right-hand side of the box where Liam Lapsley snapped it up and curled a shot that whizzed just wide of the back post.

The visitors continued to press and another corner created another scramble which ended with Hughes attempt to poke the ball home from 6 yards out being blocked by the keeper at the expense of another corner which concluded with McGrath’s header, from inside the six-yard box, cannoned off McCracken’s head and over the bar for another corner which Ecrepont clutched cleanly under the bar.

Largs dominated the closing five minutes of the half. Blair Devine from the right hand corner of the Glens box curled a free kick round the two-man wall into the six-yard box where Little got the jump on Davidson sending his header high over the bar. The corner that followed was cleared.

Glens made two changes at the break with Jamie Wilson and David Blyth making way for Sam McKee and Chris Erskine. The spell of blue sky changed at the break as well, making way for dark heavy clouds. It was a promising start for the home side, enjoying some action in the Largs box and forcing the keeper to make a save albeit to prevent a corner.

However, the ‘yellow jerseys’ were glowing in the gloom as they broke forward in numbers time and again and were rewarded on the hour mark.  Thistle won a free-kick on the outskirts of the box and up stepped William Sewell and from 24 yards clipped the ballover the leaping four-man wall into the top right-hand corner, beyond the reach of the outstretched arm of the keeper, to complete his hat-trick. Glens 0 Largs 3, 60 minutes.

Time to take shelter in the covered enclosure from the horizontal rain which was later replaced with a flurry of snow.

Blue sky made another appearance in the closing 15 minutes which proved to be the Glens best spell as they went in search of a consolation goal or two!

Keeper O’Connor was air-bound across his goal to tip a shot over the bar. Mullen floated the corner-kick from the right along the packed six-yard line where it was hooked out by Creag Little and fell for McCracken to lob the ball goalward only for O’Connor to pull off a great save to push the ball over the bar. Mullen changed tack and curled the next corner into the goalmouth and O’Connor leapt to punch it high over the bar. The third corner was mopped up by the Largs defence.

Glens made a couple of late substitutions with Craig McCracken and Brannan McDermott making way for Jamie Low and Cammy Ross.

A goalmouth scramble soon after earned Glens another corner-kick, this time from the left which Creag Little headed well clear of the box.

Largs Thistle served up the last chance of the match only for Ecrepont to make a fine block on the goal-line.
